    Dear18thDistrictResident: WithLaborDayweekendmarkingtheunofficialendtoanother summerandthenewschoolyearunderway,ourthoughtsturntofalland (hopefully)somecoolerweatherhereinnortheastOhio. Ihave maintainedabusyofficialschedulearoundourdistrictoverthepast severalweeksandappreciatethisopportunitytoupdateyouonour activities. InthismonthsAttheStatehouse section,youllreadaboutour bipartisaneffortstoadvocateforOhiosworkerswiththeunanimous adoptionofaHouseresolutionIauthoredtoencouragethepresidentof theUnitedStatestousehisauthoritytociteChinaasacurrency manipulator. Lastweek,Ihadtheopportunitytodiscussthismatterand relatedissueswithrepresentativesofseveralGreaterCleveland manufacturingcompaniesataroundtableeventinBerea. Ienjoyed visitingwiththesejobcreatorsandreceivingtheirinsightsonhowwecan continuetostrengthenOhioseconomy. Thelastfewweeksinourdistricthavealsobeenabusytimeas youllseebelowinourAroundthe18th segment. Myprimaryareasof focusasyourlegislatorremainfosteringanenvironmentforprivatesector jobcreationandprovidingworldclasseducationalopportunitiesto Ohioans,policymattersthatdrivemanyoftheeventsIhostorattendin ourlocalcommunities. Iinviteyoutomakemeawareofadditional opportunitiestoreceiveinputfromcompaniesororganizationsofwhich youareapart,sowecancontinuetopartnerinstrengtheningourgreat state.

OnAugust16,IattendedajobsfairatGreatLakesTruckDriving School,whereIofferedremarksonoureffortstofosterjobcreationinthe energyfieldandbuildingtrades. Ialsohadtheopportunitytopresenta scholarshiptoafellowmilitaryveteran,whoislookingtoleveragethe skillshelearnedintheArmyasatruckdriverhereintheBuckeyeState. Therearemanygreatopportunitiesinthisgrowingfieldasweuncover newenergyresourcesineasternOhio. OnAugust21,IspoketotheNorthRoyaltonKiwanisClub regardingtheprogresswehavemadeduringthepast20monthstomake Ohioabetterplacetodobusiness. SinceJanuary2011,wehavehelped theprivatesectorcreateover111,000newjobs,loweredunemployment bynearlythreepercent,andreducedthesizeandcostofstate governmenttoallowsmallbusinessestoengageintheactivitiesthat resultineconomicdevelopmentandjobcreation. OnAugust29,ImetwithMikeSheppard,Superintendentofthe BereaCitySchoolDistrict,regardingthedistrictsongoingconsolidation work. Whilethisisabittersweettimeformanyofuswhoattended Parknoll,Roehm,Berea,andotherschoolshereinourdistrict,declining enrollmenthasnecessitatedthisrightsizingprocess. Iampleasedto supporttheeffortsofourschoolboardanddistrictofficeinmakingthe difficultbutcriticallyimportantdecisionstoensurewecontinuetohave anExcellentandfinanciallystableschooldistrictforyearstocome. OnAugust29and31,IattendedreceptionshostedbyHer MajestysRoyalCanadianNavyandtheUnitedStatesNavyaspartofthe ClevelandNavyWeek/Warof1812BicentennialCommemoration. Itwas goodtovisitwithfellowlegislators,cityandcountyofficials,Canadian diplomats,andU.S.andCanadiannavalpersonnelinmarkingthismajor anniversaryofaneventthatresultedinastrongfriendshipwithour northernneighbor andthelongestunguardedborderbetweentwo nationsintheworld. At the Statehouse Agreatdealofmyworkthissummertorestoreabusinessfriendly environmenttoOhiohasfocusedonmanufacturingjobs. Contraryto conventionalwisdom,manufacturingisnotdeadinAmerica,particularly hereinOhiowheremanufacturerscontinuetocompriseoneofourtop economicsectors. SincetakingofficeinJanuary2011,Ihavebeeninvitedintomany ofthesmallbusinessesinourdistrictwhichmanufactureeverythingfrom specialtylabelequipmentandpartstosmallassembliesandpressure gauges. Throughoutthesevisits,Ihavelistenedtoworkers,business owners,andtraderepresentativestolearnwhatmustbedonetoensure

    financialstabilityforourbusinessesandfamilies,aswellaspropel anexpansionofeconomicopportunitiestocreatejobstoputOhioans backtowork. TheirsuggestionshaveledtolegislationIintroducedto reformOhiosonlinebusinessresourcecenter,renewourcommitmentto tradeeducationandcollegeworkforcepreparation,andreviseourtax codetosimplifyandincentivizepurchasesofcapitalequipmentforour manufacturers. ButIbelievewecanandmustdomore,particularlywhenitcomes tocreatingafairenvironmentwithourinternationaltradingpartners. Earlierthisyear,theOhioHouseadoptedHouseResolution384,a measureIauthoredtomemorializethepresidentandCongressofthe UnitedStatesoftheeffectofChinesecurrencymanipulationandtourge thepresidenttociteChinaasacurrencymanipulator. Accordingtothe EconomicPolicyInstitute,overthepastdecadeunfairtradepractices originatinginChinahaveresultedinthelossofover103,000Ohiojobs almost70percentinthemanufacturingfield,oneofourstatestop sourcesofjobs. Thisisnotbecauseourworkerslacktheskillstocompete internationally,butratherbecausetheyarenotallowedtodobusinesson alevelplayingfield. Ontherollcallvoteonmyresolution,90Democrats andRepublicansintheOhioHousecametogetherandvotedunanimously infavoroffightingfortheAmericanmanufacturingsector afineexample ofbipartisanshipononeofourstatesmostimportantpublicpolicy priorities:jobcreation. OnAugust28,Ifollowedupontheadoptionofmyresolutionby participatinginamanufacturingroundtableorganizedinconjunctionwith keyindustryleadersinNortheastOhio. Theevent,hostedbyTheMifsud GroupandTMGPerformanceProductsinBerea,wascoordinatedwith WIRENet,amembershipbased,nonprofiteconomicdevelopment organizationinCleveland. Ouragendafeaturedanopendialoguewith localmanufacturersonjobsandinvestmentingrowingenergysectors, adultworkforcechallenges,careertechnicaleducation,infrastructureand siteredevelopment,andothereconomicdevelopmentinitiatives. Inthecomingmonths,Iplantobuildonthisfruitfulexchange withourjobcreatorsbyrecommendingadditionalactionswecantaketo getourmanufacturingsectorgrowingandprosperingonceagain. Together,wewillhelpoursmallbusinessesputOhioansbacktowork manufacturingthehightechgoodsAmericansneedandtheworldwants.
