MATEJ BEL UNIVERSITY Matej Bel University (MBU) was founded 1 July 1992 by merging the Pedagogical Faculty

and the Faculty of Economics into one university. Bansk Bystrica has had a long tradition of education and culture. As early as the 13th century there was a parish school and later a town school. In the 17th century, a Jesuit grammar school was founded, and later in the same century, an Evangelical grammar school was too. It was at the latter school where Matej Bel, who the University is named after, studied and later taught and held the post of Rector. Matej Bel (1684 1749) was the author of a large number of works of science, pedagogy, national history and geography, philosophy and religion. His ideas of the equal rights of nations, religious tolerance, the unification of people and nations, the love for the homeland and his belief in the power of education and culture are still relevant. His works have contributed to the development of science, school systems, education and culture in Slovakia and Europe. In the 1850s and 1860s, the Catholic grammar school, using Slovak as the language of instruction, became an important centre of education in Slovakia. In the academic year 1856-57, a teachers training college was founded in Bansk Bystrica, at which, thanks to the then Bishop tefan Moyses, courses were provided not only in German and Latin, but also in Slovak. In the academic year 1949-50, a branch of the Pedagogic Faculty of the Slovak University in Bratislava was established in Bansk Bystrica. It was not until 1954 that the first institution of higher education, the Higher Pedagogic School, started its activities. On 1 September 1964, the Pedagogic Faculty came into being. In 1973, a branch of the Faculty of Commerce of the School of Economics in Bratislava was established in Bansk Bystrica; in 1977 this became the Faculty of the Economics of Services and Tourism. On 1 July 1992, the Faculty adopted a new name, the Faculty of Economics, which better expresses its orientation. THE MISSION OF MATEJ BEL UNIVERSITY IN BANSK BYSTRICA Matej Bel University is making an important contribution to the European community in the areas of education and research, by providing both highquality university education as well as a wide spectrum of further education according to the needs of practical life. The University is developing new knowledge through productive scientific and artistic research in order to form intelligent, moral, authentic, and socially responsible individuals and in this way helping to create a learning society. THE VISION OF THE FUTURE Matej Bel University, which has proven to be a leader in the sphere of education in the Central Slovak region, will be perceived as a strong national university of international importance in the year 2013 due to its high quality of education, successful graduates on the labour market, excellent international co-operation in particular areas of research and co-operation with

businesses, as well as thanks to its professional, athletic and artistic presentation to the public.
