SPECIFICATION FOR FOAM CONCENTRATE FOR PRODUCING MECHANICAL FOAM FOR FIRE FIGHTING

0.1 This Indian

FOREWORD

Standard ( Part 2 ) was adopted by the Indian Standards Institution on 22 November 1984, after the draft finalized by the Fire Fighting Sectional Committee had been approved by the Civil Engineering Division Council.

0.2 Foam is a homogeneous mass of tiny air or gas filled in bubbles of low specific gravity which, when applied in correct manner and in sufficient quantity, form a compact fluid and stable blanket which is capable of floating on the surface of flammable liquids and preventing atmospheric It is produced by mechanically mixing a air from reaching the liquid. gas or air to a solution of! a foam compound ( concentrate ) in water. This standard covers the foam compound in the form of a homogeneous clear liquid, free from suspended matter and visibIe impurities used for the production of fire fighting foam which is produced by mechanical aeration of a water foam compound solution. 063 The foam produced from the concentrates are of low expansion ( up to 20 times ), medium expansion ( above 20 and up to 200 times ) and high The low expansion foam concentrates are expansion ( above 200 times ). of the following types: a) Protein b) Aqueous foam,

0.3.1 AFFF concentrates, which are also referred to as fluoro-chemical foam concentrates, are based on fluoronated surface active materials in combination with suitable stabilizers and foaming agents. The foam produced from such a concentrate acts both as a barrier to exclude air or oxygen and to form thin aqueous film which floats on fuel surfaces and is capable of supressing the evolution of fuel vapours. 0.4 This standard covering only protein foam concentrate was first published in 1969 and revised in 1974. It has now been decided to revise this standard in parts; Part 1 covering protein foam concentrate which was only earlier covered in its earlier versions and introducing AFFF in Part 2. The other types of foam are stages of developments and when completed will be introduced in other parts of this standard. 0.4.1 The AFFF concentrate is used by dilution with water in fixed, mobile or portable fire extinguishers. This concentrate may be used with inductor or proportionator at 3 percent or 6 percent, whichever is applicable. This may also be diluted for ready use as pre-mixed solution with fresh water. For ready use, it shall not be stored below 0% and its prolonged storage above 40C shall be avoided. 0.5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with The number of significant places retained in the rounded IS : 2-1960*. off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

Place the disc in the jacket and insert the test jar with the ring gasket 25 mm above the bottom into the gasket.

e) Maintain the temperature of the cooling bath at -5C. Support the jacket containing the test jar, firmly in a vertical position in the cooling bath so that not more than 25 mm of the jacket projects out of the cooling medium As soon as the temperature of the AFFF concentrate in the test jar goes down to OC, the jar shall be tilted and flow observed by holding the test jar in a horizontal position for 5 seconds as noted by stop watch and AFFF concentrate shall flow freely.

METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION EXTINGUISHING PROPERTIES L-l. El.1 EQUIPMENT OF FIRE

Take a circular mild steel tank having base area of 2.6 rns with height 0.6 m and suitable steel back-board for striking foam jet. At the opposite end of the back-board is a suitable hole for holding the test nozzle having bracket on the outer side to hold the nozzle securely.

L-2. PROCEDURE
L-2.1 Pour 225 Iitres of potable water in the tank so that the height of the water in tank is about 10 cm. Pour 30 litres of 73 NL petrol in the tank over the water surface. Position the test nozzle at 7 kgf/cm2 pressure at such a level that the foam stream, when discharged inside across the tank, strikes it approximately 30 cm above the water/petrol level. L-3. TEST

NTPC-Ramagundam Date: 17-08-2006 Time 17:38:07

L-3.1 Ignite the petrol and allow it to burn for 30 seconds. Generate foam ( see Appendix F ) each type separately and direct the stream at the back of the tank on to the back-board for 6U seconds. Record the time after starting foam application for total extinction of fire.
NOTE 1 - Flame licks on the edges or pcriphcry of tank may be ignored for the purpose of evolution of total extinction time of fire, if fire extingllishcs automatically after halting of foam application after 60 seconds. NOTE 2 ignored. The intermittent self-extinguishing walk over/Rash of flame is to be

Wet the collecting vessel (K-1.1) internally and weigh it (ml). Set up the foam-making nozzle and adjust the nozzle pressure to give a flow rate of 11.4 l/m. Discharge foam and adjust the height of the nozzle so that the discharge strikes the collector centrally. Keep the nozzle horizontal. Stop foam discharge and rinse all the foam from the collector. Check that the foam solution tank is full. Start discharging foam and, after (30 f 5) s to allow the discharge to stabilize, place the collecting vessel, with the discharge outlet closed, below the collector. As soon as the vessel is full, remove it from the collector, strike the foam surface level with the rim and start the clock weigh the full vessel (m2,). Assume that the density of the foam solution is 1.0 kg/1. Open the drainage facility (see K-1.1) and collect the foam solution in the measuring cylinder to measure the 25 percent drainage time.
