LUNAR LANDSCAPE AND THE GAME MISSION IDEAS CAD OF THE LANDSCAPE

Our vision of the South Pole of the Moon in the future 1 - Starting base. 2 Plateau - The robot has to make it over the plateau by using the ramps. 3 - Cabeus crater is a permanently shadowed crater located in the south pole of the moon.
The LCROSS imparter spacecraft impacted on this crater recently and confirmed the presence of water on the moon (this crater features in our first mission).

4 - Filtration plant that will convert ice into oxygen, (which can be used for breathing),
hydrogen (for fuel), and of course water for drinking (this plant features in our first mission).

5- Shoemaker crater is another permanently shadowed crater in the south pole of the moon.
This crater is going to feature in our second mission and is going to have Helium-3 in it. We are not sure if Helium-3 is actually present in the crater, we are just going by the general idea that shadowed craters have high concentrations of Helium-3 in them.

6 - Lunar elevator is a cable that runs from the moon into space and the basic aim is to send
materials from the earth to the moon and vice-versa to help in the functioning of the lunar base (it features in the second mission).

7 - Replicas of heritage artifacts - As a tribute to the Apollo missions and the GLXP teams,
some replicas of the artifacts will be put on display.

8 Living quarters - A part of the main building in our lunar base which houses the scientists
(features in our third mission).

9 - Launching strip with a rocket (features in our third mission) 10 - The Malapert mountain is in the South Pole and rises 5km off the ground. With the
present data scientists predict that it is almost constantly lit, which makes it a perfect place for the solar panels (features in our fourth and fifth mission).

11 - A dome and a wrinkle ridge have been placed on our landscape to make it realistic and
challenging for our robot (features in our sixth mission).

12 - This is a greenhouse which will be covered by a glass dome.

MISSSION IDEAS AND GAME DESCRIPTON

Theme of the missions

Setting up a permanent lunar base poses numerous challenges. Robots with their unique abilities can most certainly assist the setting up and functioning of a lunar base. Keeping in mind our landscape proposal and the practicality of the robot we have designed our 7 missions around the theme "Robots helping astronauts survive and carry out their tasks in a lunar base in the near future?

MISSION 1

Transporting Ice to the Cabeus crater

Points: 2*25
(2 boxes worth 25 each)

Description: The robot has to carry 2 boxes, which represent ice cubes, from the
Cabeus crater to the filtration plant.

Purpose: Oxygen and water are 2 basic requirements for human survival. Large
amounts of ice are found in the lunar poles, this ice can be used as a source of water, hydrogen (for fuel) and oxygen. This mission portrays the usefulness of robot when it comes to vital tasks like ice mining.

Mission specifications: The robot can place the ice cubes anywhere on the conveyor
belt in the filtration plant.

MISSION 2

Transporting Helium-3 to the lunar elevator

Points: 2*25
(2 boxes each worth 25 points)

Description: The robot has to pick up 2 boxes,

representing helium-3, from the Shoemaker crater and place it on the Lunar Elevator.

Purpose: Helium-3 is an extremely valuable

mineral which is found in abundance on the moon. To portray this, the robot will transport He-3 from a permanently shadowed crater to the lunar elevator.

Mission specifications: The boxes have to be placed on any of the 2 platforms on the
elevator .The platform will start moving after the boxes are placed.

MISSION 3

Transporting astronaut to the launching strip

Points: 1*25 Description: The robot has to transport an astronaut from the living quarters to the
launching strip.

Purpose: The only way for astronauts to move from place to place in the lunar base
would be through lunar rovers, so we are going to make our robot function as a rover.

Mission specifications: The astronaut can be placed anywhere on the launching strip.

MISSION 4

Replacing solar panels

Points: Removing the solar panel: 20

Carrying it back to the base: 30 Placing the new panel: 25

Description: The robot has to remove a damaged solar panel from the malapert
mountain, replace it with a new one and carry the damaged panel back to the base.

Purpose: This mission not only emphasizes the importance of solar power for the lunar
base but also shows how robots can be used for maintaining vital parts of a lunar base.

Mission specifications: The new solar panel can be placed anywhere within a 5cm
radius from the outer edge of the old panel.

MISSION 5
Robot Charging
Points: 25 Description: The robot has to wait
on a base which represents a solar charging station.

Purpose: Our robot is not going to

be powered using a solar panel (we carried out a few tests and decided it is best if we dont, as we were not getting the required power). So we are going to depict the use of solar power for lunar robots through this mission.

Mission specifications: The robot has to wait for 5 seconds to earn points. If the robot
leaves the station before 5 seconds no points will be awarded.

MISSION 6

Exploring challenging terrains

Points: 2 * 25 Description: The robot has to make it over a wrinkle ridge and a dome to make it
across to the next mission.

Purpose: The lunar terrain poses some serious challenges as it is difficult to maneuver.
So one of the primary aims of any lunar rover would be, to be able to roam the landscape.

Mission specification: At least on wheel of the robot should go over each one of the
features for points to be awarded.

MISSION 7

Removing debris
Points: 2 * 25 (25 pts. for the 2 attached bricks and 25 pts. for the 2 loose bricks) Description: The robot has to collect 4 bricks (2 attached with each and 2 loose) from the lunar base and bring it back to the starting base. Purpose: The lunar surface is frequently hit by meteorites. This mission shows how robots can be used for constructing and repairing the damaged parts of the lunar base. Mission Specifications: ----
