Spring-Bow face-bow components

Hanau Wide-Vue articulator

Occlusal index is made by pressing maxillary cast into warmed Wax. Align Maxillary centrals with metal button .

External auditory meatus

Infraorbital notch

Alignment of the face-bow forks occlusal index with the maxillary teeth. Face-bow fork always lines up with the patients left.

Machined flat surface (FACET) of the transverse rod must face the thumb screw, THEN TIGHTEN THUMB SCREW.

Assembly of the transverse rod to the face-bow

Face-bow assembled, do NOT TIGHTEN thumb screws # 1,2,& 3 & ready for application to the manikin

Face-bow positioned: 1) L & R ear piece positioned on the external auditory meatus analogue. 2) Face-bow fork held in position. 3) Position the indicator with infra-orbital notch (red line) and tighten knob #1 on the transverse rod assembly. Then tighten knob #2 & #3.

Infra-orbital indicator aligned with the simulated notch.

Occlusal index held in place against the maxillary teeth

Clinical use of the face-bow: ear pieces positioned and bite forks occlusal index placed onto the maxillary teeth. Infra-orbital indicator aligned with the infra-orbital notch. Now the three thumb screws (#1, 2, 3) are tightened.

Double check the thumb screws are tight before removing the face-bow assemble.

The face-bow assemble removed from the patient. Before the laboratory phase, remove the Spring-Bow from the transverse rod. Assembly of the transverse rod, mounting jig and articulator is required before the maxillary cast will be mounted.

T bar support for the bite fork should be down & Thumb screw loose.

Mounting jig screwed into position, ready to accept the bite fork transverse rod assembly

Transverse rod & bite fork assemble positioned in the mounting jig

Transverse rod correctly positioned in the mounting jig with facets facing away from the bite forks wax. T-bar supports fork. TIGHTEN THUMB SCREWS.

T bar support is moved to support the bite forks position and the thumb screw is tightened.

Evaluated your casts for positive bubbles. If present they should be removed with a hand instrument before proceeding forward.

Make index grooves (2-3 in number, 4mm deep, 2-3cm long ) with a buffalo knife in the base of each stone cast

Clearance for mounting is visualized. Wet cast, make index grooves, place mounting ring, and mix stone. Apply stone to mounting ring and model in a sufficient amount to have excess stone as the articulator closes until the incisal pin touches the table.

Position the incisal pin with the middle point dark line at this point

Read directions: 26ml water into green bowl, Add powder, 2-3 minute mix

When the stone in no longer liquid, Apply to cast & ring, Dont forget 5 minute set time.

Make cast wet, apply stone to mounting ring and cast (STONE MUST STILL BE SOFT) and Gently close articulator until incisal pin touches incisal table.

Remove excess mounting stone quickly and NEATLY. KEEP plaster off the stone teeth.

A nice & neat mounting of the maxillary cast. The interface of mounting stone to cast and mounting ring are smooth without excess or voids. There should be no damage to the teeth

#1: Articulator is inverted ready to mount the mandibular cast. Place the cast in maximum intercuspation and use a rubber band to stabilize the casts together during mounting

If the space between the mounting ring and the cast is greater than 1, mount in two steps. First close the gap to less than 1, then finish the mounting with a second mix of mounting stone. Remember to wet the cast keep the first stone pour rough and the final pour smooth.

Base of cast indexed

With one rubber band secure the two casts together as shown
Note space for mounting stone

What if the space between the mounting ring and the cast is greater than 1? Mount in two steps.
First close the gap to less than 3/4 with the first pour of mounting stone. Its surface left contoured but rough

Check for space between ring and model

Finish the mounting with a second mix of mounting stone.

*Remember to wet the first stone pour and smooth the final mounting as excess is removed.

Articulator inverted ready to mount the mandibular cast. If the cast is not stable use a rubber band to stabilize the casts during mounting

Index grooves in the mandibular cast

Place rubber band here during setting of the mounting stone

Wet the casts base

Butter mounting stone onto the cast

Butter mounting stone into the mounting rings grooves,

Close the articulator gently and secure with a rubber band as shown above

Quickly smooth away excess stone with a wet finger Do not allow stone to go beyond the base of the cast

No stone should cover the edge of the mounting ring! Keep articulator and cast clean and neat

A completed mounting: note the neat white mounting stone and the cleanliness of the mounted casts teeth, articulator and mounting rings.

Stone added to a wet model. Surfaces are smoothed with a wet finger while all excess stone is removed long before the material sets ( working time 2-3 minutes, 5 minute set) Do not allow mounting stone to go beyond the base of the cast.

The mounted casts should be clean and neat. NO DAMAGE TO THE TEETH. Holes or voids in the plaster may be filled in after the initial mounting of the casts.

For Tuesday 11/24/09 read how to program the articulator 1. Condylar element 2. Incisal table Remember you need to keep your computer Angel ready.
