A Newsletter of the Town of Sturgeon Bay Lakeshore Area Fall 2012: Volume 12, no.

From Pat Nell, LFP Corp President

Lake Forest Park Road has been busy this summer, as I am sure you have noticed, and our refurbished sign is a notable result. Its been wonderful to see so many walkers, bicyclists, and children on the road. Perhaps I was more aware of the action because I was home most of the summer tending to puppies. Thanks to all of the children who helped socialize them. We had only one work day this year at Portage Park on September 15 because a grant is allowing others to work on eradicating phragmites. Three of our neighbors hosted potlucks over the summer, and we thank them for their hospitality. Upcoming social events are the Fall Gathering and the Winter Dinner. This newsletter was put together by the wonderful dedicated members of the Association, and I want to thank everyone for pitching in and providing Carol with much of the information included here. Be sure to check the blog for more news and photography of our road. Issues to be covered in future newsletters include fires on the beach, fireworks, overflow parking, and excessive use of fertilizers. As always we welcome suggestions and contributions to the newsletter. I hope to see all of you at the Fall Gathering.

Mid-Winter Dinner: Saturday, January 19

Every year on the third or fourth Saturday in January, residents gather at the Nightingale Supper Club for a casual evening. In 2013, the date is January 19, with cocktails at 5:30 and dinner at 6:30. All are welcome; if the weather is conducive to travel many seasonal owners drive up. To reserve a spot, call Jo Ann Zirtzlaff at 746-0331 or Lois Wendhack at 743-9761. Let Jo Ann know if you would like to be on the annual mail/call reminder list.

Road Sign Refurbished

by Ruth Sandor

At the turning from Michigan onto the Road there stands a sign to guide wayfarers into the neighborhood: colorful, informative, sturdy, and now, illuminated. Metal roofing protects the sign and supports a solar unit powering the downward-washing lights, so that even at night Lake Forest Park Road, the correct USPS designation, can be read. Thanks to Bob Brown, Dennis Connolly, Paul Lutzke, Peg OHarrow, Norm Wilsman, and Sandy Johnson for assessing the physical deterioration, devising a restoration plan, and following through with the tasks needed. Most of the materials needed were things Paul had on hand; the rest were donated by one or the other from the group. Thanks also to Marilyn Carolan, not only for permission to keep the sign where it is, but also for supplying cool refreshments on a sweltering day to the work crew. Jeff Bradley of the Artists Guild advised on the paint and colors; Peg and Norm hauled the sign to Green Bay where new lettering was applied and the surface cleaned. Now

Fall Gathering: Saturday, October 6

The Fall Gathering of the LFP Corp will be held in the second-floor boardroom at Stone Harbor Resort on Saturday October 6. Coffee starts at 9:30 followed by brunch at 10:00. Board members will meet at 9:00. Dennis Connolly (2732) will show photographs from his trip to Western China. Cost for the brunch is $15.00 per person. Please RSVP to Sandi Johnson at 818-0163 or creekhouse136@aol.com.

protected by new plexiglass, the original colors can again be appreciated. A former sign, with the permission of Dotti Rose (3317), hung for a time in the frame while work proceeded. It was recognized by some, most especially Karen Rissing, daughter of Lois and the late Fritz Wendhack. She stopped to reminisce with Bob Brown while he painted the framework. During her August vacation, Ms. Rissing, an artist, painted a winter scene on a new sign. Watch for the seasonal switch this year.

DNR Field Guide to Invasive Plants

A Field Guide to Terrestrial Invasive Plants of Wisconsin provides photographs, identification and control information, and resources for more information about 58 invasive plant species in the state. The guide helps people learn about both restricted plants such as buckthorn, bush honeysuckle, and phragmites, which are widespread, and prohibited plants, such as poison hemlock and kudzu, which are not yet established in Wisconsin. The guide also provides details on methods for successful control and recommendations for minimizing the spread of invasives. It is available on the DNR website http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/invasives/publications.html and in print via an online order form or by calling 608-2675066. Single copies are $5 plus shipping.

Consider the Frogs . . .

Using herbicides to kill Canary Reed Grass growing along the roadside may also kill the unique frog population in our wetlands on both sides of the road.

Neighbor on NOVA
LFPRs own Bela Sandor (2980), Professor Emeritus of Engineering Physics, University of Wisconsin-Madison, is a principal in the NOVA TV documentary "The Rise of the Egyptian Chariot." The project is partly based on his paper, "The Rise and Decline of the Tutankhamun-Class Chariot," which is the earliest high-performance machine. His contributions to the NOVA program include describing the chariots on location in the Cairo Museum, evaluating replicas built for the film, and demonstrating on camera the sophisticated and unique designs of the ancient wheels and suspension systems. The program will air on PBS in early 2013. Bela is also well known in the swimming world. In US Masters Swimming, he is All American (No. 1 for ages 7579) in the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke in the 2012 competition season.

New Trail in the Kellner Fen

The Door County Land Trust has created a new, short hiking trail on the Kellner Fen property, and it is asking people to use this trail instead of other hiking trails. Why? The fen is a critical staging area for the endangered Hines Emerald Dragonflyone of two in the upper Midwest and walking on or near the sedge mat risks destroying this important habitat. At the Annual Meeting, Bill Sauv (3062), our neighbor and Door County Land Trust Steward, distributed maps of the new trail, which is open to the public, and he encouraged all residents to be eyes and ears on behalf of the fen.
