What is Nauli Yoga and what are the benefits of Nauli yoga

What is Nauli Yoga

Nauliyoga belongs to Hatha-Yoga, but its main focus is on Nauli. Nauli is a dynamic exercise, a confluence of Pranayama and Asana. Therefore it gives the benefits of both. Usually it is done in a halfstanding position. As the yogic practice advances, it can also be done in different asanas. Like every other good thing in life, Nauliyoga has to be learnt. Nauliyoga may look difficult, but everybody can learn it through systematic, step-by-step training, under the guidance of a teacher. The good news is that you start getting many benefits of Nauliyoga already during the initial stages of your training program. The effectiveness of the exercise increases with time, as your stamina improves, and you gain more voluntary control over your belly muscles. Nauli is done on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning, after emptying the bowels. Evening time is also good, if there is a gap of at least 4 to 5 hrs between the previous meal and the exercise.

Benefits of Nauli Yoga:

The formation of new capillaries during Nauliyoga reduces the total peripheral resistance11 to blood because new capillaries redirect the flow of blood to vital organs. Our blood pressure is the result of the product of cardiac output (amount of blood pumped by the heart) and the peripheral resistance: Blood pressure12 = cardiac output13 X peripheral resistance14 Therefore if we decrease peripheral resistance, there will be an automatic decrease in high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for heart attack, kidney diseases, and decreased life span.

1. Blood pressure:

The formation of new capillaries during Nauliyoga reduces the total peripheral resistance11 to blood because new capillaries redirect the flow of blood to vital organs. Our blood pressure is the result of the product of cardiac output (amount of blood pumped by the heart) and the peripheral resistance:

Blood pressure12 = cardiac output13 X peripheral resistance14

Therefore if we decrease peripheral resistance, there will be an automatic decrease in high blood pressure. High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for heart attack, kidney diseases, and decreased life span.

2. Heart attack:
Nauliyoga activates all stem cells, including the ones which produce endothelial cells18, which cover the interior surface of our blood vessels. Our entire circulatory system, from the heart to the smallest capillary, is lined by the endothelial cells. Healthy endothelial cells produce nitric oxide19, a chemical signal that makes arteries elastic and keeps atherosclerosis in check by preventing blood cells from sticking to the vessel walls. Nitric oxide also prevents the narrowing of the blood vessels by curbing the abnormal growth of muscle in the vessel wall. A deficiency of nitric oxide may cause arterial aging, high blood pressure, and heart attack. Bioactivity of Nitric oxide is closely linked to hypoxia20. Nauliyoga therefore might be having a blood vessel cleansing action through the regeneration of endothelial cells and regulation of nitric oxide bioactivity. Perhaps this is the reason why it is called the most important Shatkarma of the Hatha Yoga.

3. Weight-loss:
Nauliyoga has a stimulating effect on the entire metabolism. A higher rate of metabolism means we are burning more stored fat all the time, even when we are sleeping. This observation is scientifically proved by the fact that intermittent hypoxia increases the number of mitochondria in the brain and liver cells21. Mitochondria are the power houses of the cell. More mitochondria in brain and liver mean that these organs are helping the mobilization of stored fat by burning more calories. Nauliyoga stimulates both aerobic and anaerobic metabolism; the two ways of energy production in our body. During hypoxia, the anaerobic pathway is stimulated. As soon as normal breathing is resumed, the aerobic pathway resumes its work with renewed energy. The result is that we get rid of unwanted fat tiers, without taxing the joints, tendons and ligaments.

4. Anti-cancer:

Nauliyoga stimulates the protein P53, which is an anti-cancer, anti-aging protein. It helps in the repair of sick, mutated cells. If they cannot be repaired, it helps in their elimination. Because of its function, this protein is also called tumour suppressor protein30 and the guardian of the genome30 because it prevents mutations in DNA. P53 is activated by stress factors, such as, DNA damage due to radiation, oxidative stress and hypoxia31. This elimination of sick cells is another reason to call Nauli the most important Shatkarma.
