2012 Midwest Versatility Horse Sale 7
WELCOME
My family and I would like to extend a very warm welcome to everyone who is part of our third annual Midwest Versatility Horse
Sale this year. We are very excited to come together, in the same place once again this year, to present our horses to you.
With the boys full time on the PRCA Rodeo road and the girls in school, college and high school rodeo, it has become rare indeed
for the opportunity to come together as a family these days, so we treasure that opportunity, made only sweeter by being able to do
so with such great friends and new acquaintances made here at our sale.
Once again, I think that we have continued to refine and specialize our sale into a tremendous set of horses for your inspection and
perusal. I hope that you have had the time and the technology available to you to go to our website, and spend some time there,
looking for the horse(s) of your needs.
While we continue to put together a very nice black and white catalog, it is our website that will allow you the best chance to look
these horses over, in color, along with some very nice video of these horses in action doing what they
do best. You can replay video and transition back and forth between the several horses that might inter-
est you. On our website is where you will see these horses in their natural setting which this sale ring
is not. Our website presentation to you, is our virtual color catalog. It is the very best of how we can
possibly present these horses to you.
Down the road, we will continue to develop and use the best digital and electronic media to get these
horse's true talents out in front of you for your scrutiny. We have actually introduced some new tech-
nologies to this business on your behalf last year and this year, and we will persist in trying to lead the
learning curve on your behalf and ours.
It has been an incredible year for the Tierney family since our last sale. Jesse, the oldest Tierney prodi-
gy, made the National Finals of Steer Roping (NFSR), held just weeks prior to the Wrangler National
Finals Rodeo (WNFR), at the Lazy E near Guthrie, Oklahoma. Jesse worked hard last year to secure
a position in the top fifteen in the nation to earn National Finals honor. He goes again this year to the
NFSR, appearing at catalog printing time, to have the fifth place reserved in his name going in to the
National Finals of Single Steer Roping, 2012.
Paul David has also kept us on the edge of our saddles as well this year in Team Roping, as a header,
for the first time this year. There have been times throughout the year when he held down positions in
the very top spots in the nation as a header. It appears as if he will miss making a berth at the WNFR
this year by just a few spots. So as the Pro Rodeo season ends here tomorrow (September 30), Paul
David will swing into the new season looking to improve his standings for the 2013 season. We wish
him all of the luck in the world as well as all of our love and support.
We have enjoyed watching both of the boys rank very impressively in the All Around Cowboy standings as well this year, with both
of them finishing that hunt in impressive top positions.
Daughter Amy has switched from college rodeo in Sterling, Colorado, and now rodeos out of
Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska. Our youngest daughter, Jordan, is in her senior
year of high school this year at Hot Springs, SD. Jordan will finish her high school rodeo
career, along with SD 4-H Rodeo, next spring and then will be looking to secure a team posi-
tion in college rodeo.
We go, we grow, but we never get too far from our rodeo roots, and our life-ong partnership
with the American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA). We were one of the first ranches in
the nation 1 year ago to enroll in the AQHA's new Ranching Heritage Breeder's Program.
We have enjoyed increasing attention across the nation with our ranching program and have
hosted several professional writers and photographers on the ranch since our last sale. Major
articles about the Tierney Ranch have appeared in such publications as the American Quarter
Horse Journal and Western Horseman, to name a couple.
So welcome to the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota that we so enjoy
as home. Sit deep and long and be our personal guests at the third annu-
al Midwest Versatility Horse Sale. We are very glad that you have come.
~ Paul Tierney
Dear Guests:
We are proud to have you join us for the third annual Midwest
Versatility Horse Sale, hosted by World Champion All-Around Cowboy
& World Champion Tie-Down Roper, Paul Tierney, & his family, of
Oral, SD. This 2008 Pro Rodeo Hall of Famer has made the rodeo and
performance arenas of the United States his playground for establishing
his own criteria for what it takes to make a great equine athlete.
This life-long journey has brought Paul Tierney to the point where you
find him today: presenting the products of his well-crafted breeding and
training program, to an audience of appreciative equine admirers and
buyers. And he has gathered with him an admiral representation of like-
minded equine genetic planners and trainers, who offer
with pride, along-side of the Tierney family, their equine
athletes, for your inspection and appreciation.
~ Paul, Robin, Jesse, Paul David, Amy & Jordan Tierney

2012 Midwest Versatility Horse Sale 9
Paul Tierney was honored in 2011, one year ago at this time to announce that his family's ranch, near Oral, SD,
had just been accepted as one of the first few ranches in the world to be inducted in to the new AQHA Ranching
Heritage Breeders program. The American Quarter Horse Association had just announced this new program to
their members.
When the AQHA was formed, just short of the mid twentieth century, it was conceived and populated by the "
dusty and muscled cow horses, herding cattle on the ranches of the American West, working without fanfare and
giving an honest day's labor for a measure of hay or oats " according to an AQHA announcement.
The new program is an effort of the AQHA to acknowledge its foundation roots and the ever increasing impact
that these ranch raised horses still lend to the popularity of the largest horse breed in the world. AQHA members
around the world are recognizing the value of the sensible minds and skill sets that these ranch raised horses offer
to all disciplines of Quarter Horse riders.
"This miraculous breed of versatile horses is now being stepped back in time to recognize how it got to be the
popular breed that it has become," according to legendary roper and Quarter Horse breeder, Paul Tierney.
The new AQHA program is designed to put a spotlight on ranch raised horses, and help those ranch horse breed-
ers to add value to the market place they attract. Horse owners all over the world have become keen in recogniz-
ing how bomb-proof and honest a ranch raised horse is; and that translates into value in the marketplace.
"It is an honor to be part of this important new initiative of the AQHA," Tierney claims. "This program is so
closely allied with our ranch horse breeding program, that we feel privileged to be able to be part of it, at the
ground level, so we can work to help it grow, and obtain the prominence it so deserves, and has been waiting for."
Tierney concludes.

2007 Black Gelding AQHA# X0668241
"Meeko" is a 15.1 hand black gelding who is one of our trust-
ed Ranch mounts. I have relied on Meeko to go and Rope
everything from baby calves to maverick bulls off the Rio
Grande. He is 100% sound and guaranteed gentle. I started
Heading steers on him in the arena last May, and he has taken
to it like a duck to water. I am using him as a Pick Up horse at
several amateur rodeos this summer as well. Meeko is a depend-
able mount here at the ranch where he gets plenty of saddle time
as a popular "go to" mount. Small superficial scar on right front leg; small scar on right rump from cow horn.

2008 Palomino Gelding AQHA# 5135370
This is an incredible 4-year-old horse. This dappled Palomino
gelding is gentle for anyone. He is a finished Reiner and Heel
Horse. This gelding is just plain great to be around. He is a great
Family Horse. He is sound and easy going. This horse has been
hauled a lot. For a young horse he has pretty much experienced
it all. You can't help but notice the great names and the great
lines that show up on this horse's paperwork. He comes sound
off of that Doc Bar breeding, doubled up on the top side, and
then again on the bottom. His bottom side line up is solid gold, with Reminic right there, crossed on a Mr Gun Smoke daughter; and
then his mamma sparkles brightly with the King Fritz line over the Tom Tucker line. At 4 years old, this gelding is sitting right at the
front edge of what should be a great career.

BOONSMAL CD OLENA
2009 Sorrel Gelding AQHA# 5250482
"Boon" is a very nice 3-year-old gelding who had been used quite a bit outside
on the Ranch. This horse has a lot of talent and has been started on a Cow, and
is showing great interest. We have Roped a few outside and he is doing well
working with a rope. This horse rides real quiet and easy. Boon has a bright
future ahead of him, and is cow bred from top to bottom. This boy's paternal
grandpa is none other than the great Peptoboonsmal, and his maternal grandpa is
CD Olena. Boon is double bred Doc O'Lena, so the infamous 1967 stud horse is
Boon's great-grandfather on both sides of the ledger, with Peppy San Badger and
Royal Blue Boon right there on his papers as Peptoboonsmal's noteworthy parents as well. Boon was born to a host mare as an embryo
transfer by transported semen mating; so his life was planned from the beginning, with greatness bred right into his future. Take advan-
tage of this very special one.

"Spider" has been used all over our Ranch and used over in west
Texas. We have used Spider for dragging calves to the fire, and
caught lots of cattle outside off of him. He rates well, watches a cow
really great, and is a very good mover. I have used him as a Pickup
Horse at a few amateur rodeos. I have also started heading steers on
Spider. This tall horse brings you Hancock and Leo breeding on his
top side, and Blackburn bloodlines on the bottom side. Don't miss
this good mover with the looks to match. Spider has a scar above the
bulbs of his heels that is long healed and now just a blemish.

"Sunny" is a home-raised, good looking Buckskin gelding. He is
very gentle, easy to be around, and is bred to watch a cow, and will
do it readily, and likes to show you how much he likes it. This horse
has been hauled and ridden by Shayne Porch, who has used him as
a Pickup horse. He is not afraid to get right in there and pickup off
of wild broncs. This 5-year-old gelding has been used to drag
calves and sort pairs. Sunny is started nicely in Heeling. His great-
granddaddy on the top side is the famous Peptoboonsmal. He also
sports a fair amount of Doc Bar breeding on both sides of his ledger. We are proud to make this very capable 5-year-old Buckskin avail-
able to you for your next mount.

CW PRIMETIME TE
2002 Gray Gelding AQHA# 4229230
"Shad" is big; he's tall, with a long stride and is a very smooth ride. For his size, Shad is very
athletic. He is a 10-year-old gelding straight off the Weller Ranch, Kadoka, SD, born and raised
there until age six. Shad spent his days there as a Ranch horse and part of the remuda. I haven't
had the time in these 4 years I've owned him to make him in to a head horse, as I'd planned. I
have Trail ridden Shad in some tough areas, and he goes anywhere, crosses water under all con-
ditions, and can cover a lot of ground at a walk. Shad has been with Paul Tierney for over a year
now, and comes to you straight from the ranch of Tierney Performance Horses, where Paul has
been Heading off of him and using him for general Ranch and Cattle work. Doc Bar breeding
on both sides of his parents and Poco Bueno bred on his mamma's side; also showing Scotch Bar
Time right there on his papers.

RENO RED BUCK
2003 Palomino Gelding AQHA# 4437745
"Reno" is that gorgeous Golden Palomino that you've always
wanted to own! Here is your chance to make that dream come
true. Reno gets noticed--standing 15.2 hands and weighing in
around 1200 pounds, he is a conformationally correct 9-year-old
specimen of near perfection. Reno is gentle, and should be con-
sidered as a great fit for the whole family! He has been hauled
to Jackpots and gone to the pay window. Reno has been ridden
in the Feedlots and covered the canyon country of western SD.
Reno is very sure-footed, and gives you a long smooth stride in his very comfortable ride. He has the size and build to turn a good sized
steer. Take a serious look at Reno's papers: showing Scotch Bar Time on his top side, and Two Eyed Jack right there as well, on his bot-
tom side. Reno has an old wire cut on his right front shoulder, but it healed and left just soft tissue scarring.

"Rowdy" is a stocky built and very tough little Ranch horse
package. You can Heel and Rope Calves on this great little
horse, which makes him a valuable partner on the ranch and in
the Arena. Rowdy has done a lot of riding on cattle and has been
used to move pairs, drag calves, and sort. He's got a lot of expe-
rience and honesty that he offers a new rider. Rowdy just needs
a little more roping time in the practice pen, and he'll be ready
to haul and compete on. This is a great little horse; see how he

"Cool Dude" is a standout Tie-Down Calf Roping horse. His
sire, Bijou Tony Fols, was a Junior World Champion Tie Down
Calf Roping horse. Cool Dude is very quiet and honest in the
box, but breaks and runs extremely hard in pursuit of a calf.
Cool Dude was one of the high selling horses at the Deadwood
Horse Sale just a few years back. Dude is kind, intelligent, and
very easy to be around. Our 10-year-old son rides him every-
where. Cool Dude was used on the Professional Rodeo Circuit
as a Tie-Down Calf Roping Horse; but he is also a great Heel horse and Breakaway horse as well. Dude is current on his shots and
worming and comes to the sale shod as well. At 13 years old, this gelding has his best roping years ahead of him. He brings that great
Hancock breeding from his mamma's side. Dude is a Colorado bred horse, who has seen a lot of action, on all levels.

quiet for about anyone. He is very well broke, well-mannered and pays a
lot of attention to a cow. I have roped off of Cat outside quite a bit. Cat is
100% sound and will be a very gentle and strong candidate for about any-
one to ride. He would make a good mount for about anyone in your fami-

enough for anyone who has ridden a horse before. Budweiser
sports four nice and even white stockings, along with his big

LEOS FRISKY CLIP
2005 Sorrel Gelding AQHA# 5075697
"Frisky" is an AQHA DNA Verified colt, born and reared on
the Tierney Ranch 7 years ago. You can be sure that the Three
Bars name, right there on his paper work, is no typo. That famed
Thoroughbred sire on the Linda King maternal line is still work-
ing well, on down the line. Jet Smooth on The Ole Sister with
Jae Bar Meleo on Tiny Wood on Frisky's maternal side have cre-
ated some real workers. Now you know why Frisky sports that
big hip and why it allows him to be a big stopper, and an ample
runner. Frisky is a Tie-Down and Breakaway Roper. This good looking and well-made sorrel gelding paid his dues on the Tierney
Ranch. As a seven year old Frisky is at the age to get to the pay window, or work on your ranch, or anywhere in your operation. Catch

R S GRAY HEWEY
2007 Gray Gelding AQHA# 4998159
"Blueberry" has been a star on my personal A Team on the
Ranch. He is one of my favorite "go to" horses. I have Roped
cattle on him outside when it was 105 degrees and when it was
20 degrees and straight falling snowing, and he always gives me
a solid work-day performance. He is 5 years old and fully sound
and a gentle and safe horse to be around. Blueberry is a tall
horse at 16 hands, and has lots of run and good solid rate on a
cow. I've used him at bull ridings and amateur rodeos to Drag
Bulls from the arena, and he takes to it very well. I've started Heading steers at the ranch this past spring, and he is doing great. My
wife-to-be is terribly upset that Blueberry is for sale, so I have to remind her: " that's how we pay the bills." Needless to say, he's
a keeper.

minded around cattle, pins his ears back and runs right to 'em.
I've been Tie-Down Roping and Heeling on this mount, and
I've been Heading some on him also. This is a really great horse

sired by our Paint stud Diamond Flasher. Mack is a full broth-

of gelding, but he could easily make a good arena horse in
Heading or Heeling, or even a good Tie-Down Roper. He has
ability and agility and lots of potential. The right cowboy can
take this horse a long way and make a great equine partner out
of him. Mack is not for an inexperienced rider; he is a Cowboy's
horse. He comes to you, ridden by Paul Tierney. The winning

2007 Palomino Mare AQHA# 5344175
"Jetta" has grown up all over our ranch, literally. She has been

Jetsmooth mamma that this mare is out of. If she ever goes into
anyone's breeding program down the road, she'll keep passing
on her great bloodlines from Sun Frost, Sak Em San, Jet Smooth and Jae Bar Meleo. This 5-year-old yellow mare is everything she
appears to be. Watch for her in the Friday night preview; she'll catch your eye. She'll be back Saturday morning sale preview to show-
case her rating and tracking skills.
