L'association lanestrienne Je TED aller l'cole a pour but d'aider la scolarisation des enfants autistes et de diriger les familles dans leur recherche d'un diagnostic prcoce. Elle lance une ptition de soutien au Dr ric Lemonnier, responsable du Centre de ressources autisme (CRA) de Bretagne, bas Bohars (29). Le Dr ric Lemonnier, pdopsychiatre au CRA de Bretagne, est aujourd'hui menac dans l'exercice de ses fonctions, crit la prsidente de Je TED aller l'cole, Valrie Sochon. C'est actuellement le seul mdecin de Bretagne qui aide scolariser les enfants autistes et les diagnostiquer . A travers cette ptition, adresse au directeur de l'Agence rgionale de sant, l'association demande ce que le Dr ric Lemonnier garde sa libert d'exercer dans le diagnostic et la prise en charge de l'autisme en suivant les recommandations de bonne pratiques de l'autisme publies par la Haute autorit de sant, le 8 mars 2012 . Le but de cette manifestation est de faire connatre et reconnatre lautisme. En effet, les autistes manquent de lieux de vie et de structures adaptes pour les apprentissages. Eurecah (ducation Utile Rgionale pour Enfants Citoyens Atteints de handicap), cr en janvier 1999, reoit 84 personnes de 3 ans 30 ans dont 90 % sont porteurs dautisme et 10 de maladies orphelines. Les bnfices des 48 heures de lautisme: thtre, cabaret, marche, ptanque, loterie, soupe aux choux, danses folkloriques, vlo, seront reverss cette association qui offre du plaisir et des loisirs aux personnes atteintes dautisme, les pousse vers le plus dautonomie possible (sociabilit, propret, vivre ensemble) et soulage les familles en souffrance. Le centre est ouvert 5 jours par semaine du mardi au samedi, de 9h 17h. Deux personnes diplmes y travaillent temps complet et une temps partiel. Une vingtaine de bnvoles aident au fonctionnement par roulement. Une trentaine de stagiaires interviennent galement. Eurecah a un budget de 90000 par an, dont 20 % viennent des subventions du Conseil Gnral et de mairies, 30 % des parents. Plus encore lorsque notre destin croise celui d'un enfant autiste. C'est pour offrir ces jeunes toutes les chances de trouver leur place dans notre monde que l'association L'Ange et l'autisme est ne Narbonne, au dbut de l't. Au nom d'Angelo, bientt 5 ans et entour de sa famille. Au nom - aussi - de tous les enfants prisonniers de leur handicap, mais qui ne demandent qu' tourner la cl en connivence... L'enfant n'est pas au bon endroit La maman d'Angelo, Marine Vidal, est ainsi decenues la prsidente de l'association. Avec sa mre, ses proches, elle se bat pour que les choses bougent autour de l'autisme en France. Dans notre pays, il faut savoir qu'un enfant sur 150 est aujourd'hui atteint d'autisme. Or, la seule solution propose ces jeunes, et leurs parents, c'est l'hpital de jour, ce que nous ressentons comme une sorte de centre psychiatrique pour enfants avec des ducateurs spcialiss, mais sans relle prise en charge. Pour nous, l'enfant n'est pas mis au bon endroit. Les enfants ont un statut de handicap. Pour le conserver, ils sont obligs d'aller l'hpital de jour. Et sans accord du Centre de ressources de l'autisme, la mthode ABA domicile n'est pas possible .Cette mthode nouvelle, ABA (NDLR : en traduction, analyse applique du comportement) est encore peu utilise en France, mais ses rsultats

sont trs encourageants. Le but de l'association est de rcolter des fonds pour financer les heures de mthode ABA domicile ou chez une formatrice prcise alors Marine Vidal. Nous n'avons pas encore tous les codes Car la prise en charge individuelle avec la mthode ABA est susceptible de remettre l'enfant dans le chemin de la vie ordinaire. Chaque enfant autiste est diffrent, les troubles sont diffrents. Il faudrait effectivement du cas par cas , complte Brigitte Chenot, membre de l'association.L'essentiel du travail, avec la mthode ABA, c'est surtout sur la communication, car nous n'avons pas encore tous les codes, mais tout passe par l. Un simple complment alimentaire offre l'espoir de traiter une forme particulire d'autisme coupl de l'pilepsie, selon une recherche publie jeudi dans la revue amricaine Science. Environ 25% des personnes souffrant d'autisme sont aussi pileptiques, un trouble lectrique crbral caractris par des convulsions dont les causes restent largement mconnues. Ces chercheurs des Universits de Californie San Diego et de Yale (Connecticut, nord-est) ont dcouvert une mutation gntique prsente chez des autistes pileptiques qui acclre le mtabolisme de certains acides amins, crant ainsi une carence. Cette dcouverte pourrait aider les mdecins diagnostiquer cette forme particulire d'autisme plus rapidement, ce qui permettra de commencer un traitement plus tt. Selon les auteurs de ces travaux, il serait ainsi potentiellement possible de traiter cette forme d'autisme avec des complments alimentaires contenant ces acides amins dits " chane ramifie" comme l'ont aussi montr des expriences sur des souris gntiquement modifies pour avoir la mme mutation gntique. "Ce fut trs surprenant de dcouvrir des mutations gntiques affectant le mtabolisme qui sont spcifiques l'autisme et peuvent potentiellement tre traites", relve le Dr Joseph Gleeson, professeur de neurosciences l'Universit de Californie San Diego, principal auteur de l'tude. "Le fait que le traitement potentiel soit vident et simple est le plus emballant: juste donner aux patients

Le professeur Gleeson et ses collgues ont squenc une partie du gnome d'enfants autistes dans deux familles souffrant aussi d'pilespsie et ayant une mutation dans le gne qui rgule le mtabolisme des acides amins chane ramifie. Ces chercheurs ont galement examin des cultures de cellules souches neuronales provenant de ces patients et dcouvert que celles-ci se comportaient normalement en prsence des acides amins chane ramifie. Interrog mardi, l'inspecteur d'acadmie du Pas-de-Calais assurait que la rentre scolaire tait techniquement russie . quelques exceptions prs. Comme pour Chlo, une petite fille de trois ans qui a fait sa rentre dans une cole maternelle hninoise. Or, Chlo souffre de troubles autistiques. Ils ont t dtects il y a six mois , explique Cline, la maman. Depuis, la fillette est suivie par un orthophoniste et un ducateur spcialis. La communication se fait par un livre d'image. Elle comprend tout ce qu'on lui dit. En prvision de son entre en maternelle, Cline a sollicit une assistance. Le 28 juin, la Maison dpartementale des personnes handicapes (MDPH) accordait un auxiliaire de vie scolaire (AVS) durant deux ans pour prendre en charge l'enfant sur le temps complet de la scolarisation . l'inspection acadmique de mettre un personnel disposition. Rassure, Cline amne mardi sa fille l'cole mais l, surprise, pas d'AVS. C'est embtant, car la petite ne sait pas progresser, elle ne parle pas, elle n'est pas autonome, il faut tout lui apprendre, la guider au quotidien , explique Cline, bien consciente que la matresse ne peut s'occuper personnellement de Chlo qui a un handicap . La classe compte 26 lves. Je souhaite que cela soit mis en place au plus vite sinon les troubles vont s'accentuer. Douze heures par semaine Contacte, l'inspection d'acadmie du Pas-de-Calais assure qu'un AVS a bien t recrut pour prendre en charge Chlo, raison de douze heures par semaine, soit chaque matin. S'il n'tait pas son poste mardi, c'est qu'il restait finaliser le contrat. Mais sa date d'arrive n'est pas connue. L'quipe de suivi

Dpartementale Pas d'cole pour 130 enfants handicaps 265 mots 7 septembre 2012 Ouest France OUESTF lemans Franais Ouest France 2012. Comme chaque anne, des enfants handicaps sont privs d'cole. L'Adapei rclame un comit de scolarisation. La scolarisation des enfants handicaps ? Un refrain qui accompagne chaque rentre. Cette fois encore, Pascal Coroller, prsident de l'Adapei (Association dpartementale des amis et parents d'enfants inadapts) dnonce le manque de places dans les tablissements. Nous tions 106 l'an dernier, cette fois, ce sont 130 enfants qui aucune solution n'a t propose. Pour l'instant, ils n'ont de place ni dans les Instituts mdico-ducatifs, ni dans les services d'ducation spcialise et de soins domicile, ni dans une cole classique. En cause toujours, les budgets allous l'Agence rgionale de sant (ARS), qui dcide du nombre de places dans les tablissements spcialiss. C'est une question de choix, rsume Pascal Coroller. On met 300 millions pour limiter la hausse du prix de l'essence quand peine 20 millions suffiraient rgler nos problmes. L'Adapei, comme d'autres associations du dpartement, travaille proposer des solutions aux familles concernes, souvent isoles et dmunies face la question. La difficult est plus aigu encore pour les handicaps les plus lourds. Des enfants autistes se retrouvent en hpital psychiatrique, quand la famille ne peut plus assumer seule. Si les budgets serrs n'incitent pas l'optimisme, Pascal Coroller n'entend pas se dcourager. Lui et ses partenaires ont rclam auprs de l'ARS la tenue d'un comit de scolarisation. Clment Borges, autiste de 11 ans, scolaris l'cole prive Notre Dame des Arts Riom, a bien obtenu la prsence d'une AVSI ses cts et ce ds son premier jour d'cole, mardi. Il s'agit de Vinciane Quintin, 24 ans, par ailleurs intervenante spcialise autisme auprs d'une autre enfant Riom. Une personne parfaitement qualifie donc, qui assiste Clment dans la classe Clis (Classe d'inclusion scolaire) de Nadine Terret, entirement ddie aux enfants autistes. Dans notre dition de samedi, nous relations l'inquitude des parents de Clment informs du fait que malgr une notification de la MDPH (Maison dpartementale des personnes handicapes) de 12 heures d'Aide la vie scolaire individuelle plus un temps de repas par semaine, leur enfant n'en bnficierait pas cette anne. Une situation qui excluait Clment de l'cole pour certaines activits (piscine, sorties extrieure, cantine), l'importance de son handicap ncessitant la prsence permanente d'un adulte ses cts. Inform le lundi 3 septembre, par l'Inspection acadmique de cette affectation en urgence , Patrick Morales se rjouit, de pouvoir travailler en bonne intelligence avec l'Inspection acadmique et les services diocsains. Avec Vinciane Quintin qui a un contrat de 20 heures par semaine, et trois AVS collectives, les besoins de nos deux Clis (16 enfants) sont raisonnablement couverts. Mais, il faudrait encore un coup de pouce pour les 4 enfants handicaps scolariss en classe ordinaire pour lesquels nous avons 39 heures de notification mais une seule AVS pour 20 heures par semaine .

Pour moi, la rentre scolaire est chaque fois une preuve en raison de soucis politiques et administratifs. Nous ne sommes pas reconnus par les autorits comptentes. Mais nous faisons bien un travail li lapprentissage des enfants, donc nous sommes bien une cole. On remet malheureusement rgulirement notre travail en question, notre cole est constamment en sursis. On nous renvoie sur le niveau de lenfant: mme en manque de certaines capacits, na-t-il pas le droit de passer du temps avec dautres enfants? Ce qui est important pour nous, cest que les enfants puissent faire une belle rentre. Plus on proposera de choses lcole, plus lenfant spanouira. Lcole possde une capacit daccueil de cinq enfants. Une nouvelle petite fille va arriver, et une place est disponible. Chaque enfant possde son propre environnement et est accompagn selon ses capacits pour aller vers une scolarisation ordinaire. On ne comprend pas encore ce handicap de lautisme . Ici, on reste dans ce systme de recherche avec des approches plurielles (ducatives, comportementales). 150 intervenants (dont 15 % du monde professionnel: orthophonistes, ducateurs spcialiss, AMP, infirmires) travaillent gracieusement avec nous. Tous les moyens sont bons pour changer avec lenfant. Nous allons souvent lextrieur, pour multiplier les environnements (piscine, mdiathque, cinma, quitation, thtre) et nous avons mme cr notre propre logiciel pour tablette tactile, Touch. Marie-Hlne Jonnet nous a rejoints pour un stage AMP jusquen fvrier. Notre initiative touche les gens. Notre cole est finance par des dons danonymes, de clubs service ou par des prix dinitiative rgion. On a un petit budget mais trs peu de dpenses. Nos locaux sont prts

par la Ville. Depuis deux ans, nous avons suivi huit enfants et accompagn de nombreuses familles. Avoir un enfant autiste est un investissement vie pour les parents. Son cerveau envoie alors des signaux que le scientifique intercepte : ce sont ces signaux qui seront mis en musique par des artistes. Ces recherches entrent dans le champ de l'informatique affective qui traite des machines capables de dtecter, de comprendre et de rpondre aux motions humaines, souligne le professeur Macefield. Le tout est stock sur les pistes d'un ordinateur, comme sur la table de mixage d'un studio, et des logiciels conus spcifiquement pour l'exprience convertissent les diffrentes voix en un choeur vibrant de cloches et de carillons. la fin de la session, ils disposeront d'une matire suffisamment riche et complexe pour composer une symphonie motionnelle excute lectroniquement. Le mal du pays Quinze ans aprs son dpart, et mme s'il avoue que la France lui manque et qu'il aime la rgion de l'Adour, Dax, les plages et le caractre naturel des Landes qui est encore prserv , Jean-Pierre Bernard, qui a encore de la famille Poyanne et Prchacq, ne regrette pas la dcision de s'expatrier. Je ne revois pas aussi souvent que je le souhaiterais ma famille dans le Sud-Ouest, mais le bien-tre de ma fille passe avant tout. Mme si la France a dcid que 2012 serait l'Anne de l'autisme pour amliorer et dvelopper la prise en charge des enfants, le Landais n'envisage pas de retour au pays dans l'immdiat : Ma fille bnficie d'un environnement bien adapt, mon fils a grandi ici, et j'ai trouv ma place professionnellement. All Rights Reserved. One of the least fun moments I recall from my years of growing up with an autistic brother was when he bit me on the cheek just in time for my class photo. I was 12 and he was 11. I went into school with visible bite marks, and when they sat me in the chair for my solo shot, I told them that the cat had done it. That's one of the bad stories. As for a good one ... um, to be honest, I have a hard time coming up with much. I know that people are warmed by stories of siblings who selflessly shower the disabled child with love, attention and support. I think that's great, too. And it's for real for some siblings. But for many of us, relating to a sibling who is on the autism spectrum can be complicated. The challenges to a warm, close relationship are many. Normal sibling rivalry doesn't work, because it can never be a fair fight. Here's what siblings often are up against, particularly when a brother or sister has more severe autism: ?missing out on typical family outings, such as movies, restaurants and vacations; ?being embarrassed to bring friends home; ?unpredictable and sometimes violent tantrums and outbursts aimed at you; ?being expected to grow up faster than you may want to, because you need to be the "responsible one"; ?the sense that you come second to your parents, because so much of their time and energy is focused on the one with autism.

These are all fertile ground for building resentment. And then feeling guilty about feeling resentment. Because, after all, even as youngsters, we do understand that our disabled sibling cannot help being disabled. A dearth of research The feeling that our needs come second is echoed in the small volume of research on how autism affects siblings. Understandably, most of the scientific focus goes to the child who has the condition. (One in 88 children in the United States has some form of autism, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.) At the same time, it should be remembered that at least twice as many children confront the problems of having a brother or sister on the spectrum, says Ryan Macks, a child psychologist at Cincinnati's Children's Hospital and one of the few researchers on sibling impact. A fair amount of research has been done on how autism impacts the family. Most of it, however, has focused on how parents are affected. What intrigued me both as an autism sibling and as a family physician whose patients include autism siblings was the dearth of studies looking specifically at the sibling relationship. Moreover, the small amount of research tends to center on issues of academic performance, mood disorders and social performance, and is far from conclusive . A 2006 review of the research in the Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability found that while some researchers were uncovering "deleterious outcomes," others were finding siblings who were well adjusted or whose challenges were of "low magnitude and non-significant." A 2007 Harvard Review of Psychiatry article echoes this, mentioning studies that document "distressing emotional reactions such as feelings of anxiety, guilt and anger" and "more adjustment problems" as well as research noting that "some siblings benefit from their experience, others seem not to be affected." The studies used different methodology, but even so, the inconsistency perhaps should not be surprising. Just as no two people with autism are alike, no two siblings are alike in how they adapt to their family situation. 'A big adjustment'

According to Macks, there are some, like me, who can't help but recall those years as mostly difficult, with a lingering sense of a childhood that was compromised. But he suggests that such an experience is neither typical nor inevitable, as some kids weather the challenges with composure, serenity and even the belief that a sibling's autism was actually a positive factor in their lives. The data offer only a few hints at what might determine a sibling's response to autism in the family. Some studies reported that siblings tend to do better in bigger families than smaller; in two-parent families rather than single-parent; in families where the autistic child's functioning is higher rather than lower. There also can be better outcomes in families of more financial means. Additionally, birth order seems to matter. According to Macks, "The majority of the research found that when you are a younger sibling younger than the child with autism it is easier, because that is all you have ever known." For an older child, the arrival of a sibling with autism can be "a big adjustment to make." Charley Moskowitz, a social worker in New York who works in a program designed to help children adjust to disabled siblings in the home, says that after years of working with such families, it's clear "there is no such thing as a typical sibling." In sessions where non-autistic brothers and sisters get together for a day of shared activities, the kids have a chance to talk about their experience. They can vent, examine their feelings and learn from their peers boys and girls from other homes with autism. Several themes repeat themselves, Moscowitz says. "These children feel extremely responsible," she says. "They feel neglected, they feel that their home is in turmoil, that nothing will be normal for them." She adds: "They are the ones who can't have friends over, because their siblings are so out of control and take over the whole house." The parents' role I understand this feeling. Once, when I was a teenager waiting for a boy to pick me up for a date, I locked my brother up in another room. I am not proud of this, or even comfortable revealing it. But it is an impulse that I know others have felt. Rukmini Basu, a 16-year-old from McLean, has those feelings. Her brother Arko, 21, is autistic. "I guess

when I was younger and friends would come over I'd be somewhat embarrassed about what my friends would react to when they saw him," she told me. "I would just try to get him out of the way so that they wouldn't see him." Being out in public can be just as difficult. One reason for this, Macks says, is that most kids on the spectrum look like typical kids, with no abnormal physical or facial features to signal that the child is different. When such a child throws a screaming tantrum, "embarrassment tends to set in" because of how it looks to passersby, Macks says. "With autism, a lot of the time they look at the parents or the siblings, and they say, 'Why are you not doing something to control this child?'" How parents handle the situation whether it is a temper tantrum in public, other annoying behaviors or daily behavioral interventions is extremely important, according to Macks and Moskowitz. "One of the things we know," Macks says, "is that the mental health of the parent, their coping skills, tends to be the primary predictor in terms of how the sibling is going to handle the situation." A sibling's sex also comes into play. Boys tend to have an easier time of it than girls, Mack says, possibly because boys "are not usually given as many caretaking responsibilities" for handicapped siblings as girls are. Basu's mother recognizes this pattern. "She was never a child in my mind," says Sharmila Basu, who acknowledges that from early on she often told her daughter "to take care of her brother in many social situations." The combination of extra responsibilities, daily struggles with a sibling and diminished attention from parents can lead to anger and anxiety. "These are the main issues the kids are dealing with and that we really want to look out for," Moskowitz says. She has seen many kids who, consciously or not, don't want to overburden their parents with their issues, so they keep their emotions tucked inside. Claire Smith, 18, of Rockville, whose 15-year-old brother is autistic, describes it this way: "I try to make sure that they don't have to handle me. As much as possible, I try to stay out of trouble. ... I try to not be the one they have to worry about ... to be responsible and patient and take stuff off their hands whenever I possibly can." The good moments Duty and the burden of responsibility aside, Smith talks about some good moments with her brother. The key, she says, is being able to keep a sense of humor to know there are times when laughter can

replace anger. "A lot of it is really funny," Claire says. "He does a lot of cute stuff." She recalled a recent incident in which her brother, who is also deaf, was fixated on mopping the porch. He was outside, signing to himself the instructions he had just received from his father about the chore. She chose to find his behavior funny instead of embarrassing, and to appreciate the moment. "I don't think there are any siblings," she says, "who can laugh at their brother having a conversation with himself and a mop." Beyond such little moments, researchers and some siblings themselves are discovering that the sibling experience can produce long-term benefits . Some studies report that people who grew up with autism in the house tend to be more empathetic. "They are often able to handle difficult situations later in life. They've learned how to handle embarrassing situations in public; they've learned how to handle negotiations better," Macks says. In fact, in stable families with "no demographic risk factors" such as a one-parent household or economic issues, Macks says, "by and large, having a sibling with autism is extensively viewed as a very positive experience, with limited long-term negative impact." Basu and Smith agree. "I feel more responsible ... know what it's like to take care of someone to some degree," Smith says. "I feel I am a little more patient than some of my friends." Adds Basu: "It helped me become more mature" more quickly. Despite the challenges and there are many neither would change anything if they could. As Smith puts it: "Wishing him different is wishing him away. And I don't want to wish him away." This is a point Macks wants to emphasize: "Most siblings of children with autism or any other type of disability wind up doing just fine." He believes that there is a misconception that having an autistic sibling sentences a child to "a whole range of intense struggles throughout your life." That is not necessarily true, he says. "The majority will handle the situation quite well." As we adjust to absorbing into our community all of the kids with autism and strive to support their unique educational, vocational and medical needs, I'd say let's not forget the siblings, however well adjusted they may seem. Their needs must not be overlooked by parents, teachers, therapists, doctors and researchers. As for myself now the generally well-adjusted adult sibling of a 45-year-old autistic man the challenges are evolving. I suspect they also evolve for Smith, Basu and many others.

Further, he said pediatricians and health officials have created an all-or-nothing approach to vaccinations that gives the false impression that all inoculations are equally important. "It's a signal to parents that the vaccine schedule is an all-or-nothing affair - that you either accept that the mandated vaccines are all equally valuable and comply with the entire schedule or reject it in its entirety," said Largent, associate professor in MSU's James Madison College. Avi Reichenberg, PhD, previously a Visiting Professor and now a new faculty member at the Seaver Autism Center and the Department of Psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and colleagues, used population registers from Sweden and Israel to examine whether a family history of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or both, were risk factors for ASD. "Our findings indicate that ASD, schizophrenia and bipolar disorders share etiologic risk factors," commented the authors. "Future research could usefully attempt to discern risk factors common to these disorders." Dr Reichenberg said, "These potentially shared etiologic risk factors could be genetic, or could also represent environmental factors. These findings are also important because if ASD, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder have some common causes, they may be more similar than we currently understand. This may change how researchers and clinicians think about these disorders" Researchers conducted a case-control evaluation of histories of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder in firstdegree relatives of the patients who met the criteria for ASD from three group samples. Two groups were in Sweden and the third group consisted of recruits to military service in Israel. The study showed the presence of schizophrenia in parents was associated with an almost three-fold increased risk for ASD in a Swedish national group sample and a Stockholm County, Sweden, group. Schizophrenia in a sibling also was associated with an increased risk for ASD in the Swedish national
