Wheatland County council gave third reading and approval to the hamlet boundaries for Cheadle and Namaka, Sept. 11. Alex Taylor of Dillon Consulting presented the final Area Structure Plan for both hamlets, developed from information gathered at several open houses and workshops done with area residents, in the past year. Dillon looked at the history of the community and developed a thirty-year development plan based on community input. It is always helpful to go back where we came from, when we are planning for the future. Each community had members that were involved in the development of the plans, said Alex Taylor, Dillon Planner. The current ASP will be rescinded and the new plan will replace it. According to Wheatland planning staff, this will allow for the 30 year planning parameters, but wont exclude pre-existing parameters for development. It takes into consideration the provincial and county development policies, but allows the county to address individual development parameters as they come up. The Cheadle community concerns were developers converting agricultural land, allowing areas for the community to grow, preserving open and green spaces, preserving peace and quiet of a small community, encouraging infill development of existing empty lots, fit development around the Hwy 1 development plan, to keep the lot size small and encourage small business development. A multi-family development style supplies housing for young adults and provisions for seniors wanting to stay in the community. The Namaka community wanted slow growth for the hamlet, small lot size with encouragement to infill development, preservation of agricultural land, keeping open spaces and park with vision for recreational possibilities. They wanted to discourage light industrial growth and acreages over 1 acre size. There will be the possibility for basement suites and possible duplex development. In addition, the community wants developers to provide gateways, landscaping, vegetative screening and more green space in relation to lot size. The plan separates the Eagle Lake ASP and Namaka ASP into two separate plans. Continued on Page 2

The Third Annual Calgary Diocesan Country Fair and Palio took place Sept. 15 at the Strathmore Ag Society Rodeo Grounds. The fun-filled day featured tons of entertainment for children, various bands, a mass celebrated by Bishop Fred Henry and the much-anticipated palio horse races. Every horse running represented a Southern Alberta Catholic Parish and a total of eight heats were raced. The winner of each heat would then move on to the final in order to determine a winner. The winning parish received the Banner of Our Lady to keep in their church for a year.

An elegant intimate affair

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The fall fundraiser, held at the Gleichen community hall Sept. 15, was outstanding and drew some celebrities along with area residents. Dignitaries included MLA Jason Hale and his wife Maggie, Mark Sutherland and his wife Dina representing EnCana, and David Wilkes and Debbie Campbell from Alberta Treasury Branch. Three County of Wheatland councillors-Alice Booth (who also helped organize the event), Brenda Knight (assisted at the bar) and Berniece Bland gave their support to the event. The Juno award nominees Saskia and Darrel de la Ronde also helped towards achieving the goal for the community hall upgrades. They were seated throughout the crowd and enjoyed exchanging stories with their table partners. We are happy to support a community effort. We love to see a community that gets together and lends a hand, said Saskia de la Ronde. The elegantly decorated tables were a black and gold fall motif, complete with candlelight. The supper was a hearty home-cooked beef dinner that rural partygoers have come to expect. The desserts were decadent, adorned with sparklers that surprised everyone as the dishes were paraded to the dessert table. Contributions from the dignitaries helped support the required repairs to the halls roof and upgrades for handicap accessibility and fire doors. The overall tab for the hall was $250,000. The community was required to raise funds for a matched grant from the government. Mark Sutherland was there to present a $50,000 gift from EnCana to the community; ATB representative David Wilkes presented the community with a $2,500 cheque to cover both the North and South doors and accessibility funding. Local residents Doris and George Lindman also made a donation of $500, out of which a new big BBQ for the hall was purchased. Fundraising is ongoing with membership

Back to school BBQ

Brentwood School hosted their annual Welcome Back BBQ and Meet the Teacher Night Sept. 12. With the efforts of hot lunch coordinator, Pam Seabrook ,and her marvelous crew, everyone enjoyed hot dogs and doughnuts before heading into the school to meet the teachers. What I love about this kind of evening is the sense of community it promotes, said Principal Laurie Huntley. The whole family is welcome and there were lots of preschoolers and grandparents enjoying the evening with us. People took advantage of not only the opportunity to introduce themselves to their childrens teachers, but also to catch up with friends after a long summer. Chatter and laughter filled the hallways and that is just what we want to hear in our building. We are lucky to be part of such a great school community.

Food bank questions town

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Wheatland Food Bank volunteer Lorraine Farran wants some answers from The Town of Strathmore, about the shift from WFCSS administration to a Strathmore FCSS. We dont know where we stand, said Lorraine Farran, a long-time volunteer with the Wheatland Food Bank. They wont talk to us about their plans. Volunteers packaged 29 hampers, helping five families and two children this month. The clients can receive help every two months. The number of hampers needed has steadily increased this year. She said all the volunteers are upset about the lack of information on the changeover and also want information on the Christmas Hamper program, as it supplies 270 hampers. The program is separate from the food bank and Farran fears they might try to amalgamate the two programs. If we only knew what they had planned, said Farran. I have been here since 1997. In all my years working here, I have never seen a town official drop in to see what we do. She said there are many questions about how they will separate rural clients from the clients from Strathmore when they come in the door and on an administrative level. The volunteers want to know how the funding will be generated and managed. She says that the WFCSS does an enormous amount of work on the administrative side. There are over twenty job duties they complete. She said she feels bad for the WFCSS staff because they bend over backwards to help them. She said that none of the volunteers would be prepared to take on those responsibilities. Volunteers already put in over 23 hours each and they are 55 years of age and over. Splitting the bank into two different entities, there are concerns that it will cut the volunteer base in half. She worries that this would make it too hard for the volunteers to keep up. There would be investments of a new vehicle, extra gas budget and rent to pay. Farran said that the budget would not handle the extra expenses. At least there should have been manners about it. They would have got us on their side, if they had approached us in an adult sort of understanding way, and find out what we do

and how much we do., said Farran. The newly hired Strathmore FCSS coordinator has made no contact yet. Dwight Stanford, Town Manager, said the town would continue to provide all the existing programs and the Christmas hamper program would continue. The existing contract expires on Dec. 31, 2012. Stanford said that the Alberta Family and Community Support Services program is helping the town set up for the changeover. Lisa Shankaruk, Public Affairs Officer, Alberta Human Services said that it is quite common that a municipality will split off from a partnership. She said when that happens a request is sent to the minister, giving a 6 month notice of their intentions. They also notify all members of the partnership. Funding criteria is recalculated for the new program and re-evaluated for the residual partnership. Shawshank said that the re-evaluation should be done prior to the contract expiry date. As for staff and physical property, she said they usually stay with the original partnership. There are policy standards for the turnover and usually the process goes very smoothly. TOWES aids business bottom line

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor The TOWES software development used to assess basic literacy needs and work skills was demonstrated at the Civic Centre on Sept. 13. The assessment helps establish a baseline for employees and aid businesses in developing staff development programs. In the world of work, employers want employees who can read and use workplace documents, complete tasks and solve problems, said Conrad Murphy, Director of TOWES. This software program is available for any business or employee to use. Murphy said that some newcomers to Canada have taken the test to certify their level of language, number and work skill. It is a five level assessment that first identifies basic literacy and number skills moving into the other levels of workplace competency. Over 600,000 workers in Canada have inadequacy in essential literacy and numeric skills. An increase in those skills is directly

proportionate to the bottom line on businesses and their competitive edge. The level of skill affects an individuals health, finances, education and family. With the globalization of businesses, low skill workers cost businesses money. Educating employees makes businesses money. Countries like China are rapidly gaining on Canadian markets because they have programs to address essential skills. It is a well- known fact that differences in average skill levels from country to country account for about 55 per cent of differences in long term Gross Domestic Product, said Murphy. Collaborative effort for employment needs bottom line

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor A collaborative research project done by Bow Valley College, partnered with the Rural Development Project, was released for the first time to a large group of distinguished community leaders, on Sept. 13 at the Strathmore Civic Centre. Until now, there was incomplete data addressing the Strathmore, Chestermere, Langdon, and Gleichen employment and training needs. Our workforce is shrinking rapidly and we need it for a productive economy. The facts tell us we are moving into a global competition rapidly. The workplace programs are investments for business and the identification of essential skills required will help with workforce productivity, said Teri McKinnon, Regional Lead for Education and Development, Bow Valley College. Strong local labour information is used for planning, assessing skill needs of local communities, identifying resources and targeting gaps. The research identified a need to provide employers with a way to identify essential skills of their employee and provide training and skill opportunities. Attracting educated and trained staff is a shared responsibility between industry and government. Education and training skilled workers is vital to maintaining Albertas workforce, said Todd Shatford, Program and Operations Manager for Central Alberta, Alberta Works. Shatford said there are predictions of a 114,000 worker labour shortage in Alberta by the year 2021. He said it is well documented that increasing literacy and essential skills leads to greater business productivity. Just an increase of one per cent productivity equals a 32 million dollar raise in Canadas economy, said Shatford. The research project contacted 294 businesses in this area. Of those, 99 employers participated in a detailed survey and interview. The majority of businesses are defined as small and micro businesses, providing specialized services. The demographics of Strathmore showed 41.4 per cent of the population is under 24 years old and 23.3 per cent are over 55. There were 79 aboriginals employed. The survey determined that 64 per cent of businesses have some kind of training program and realize training importance. Some of the smaller companies have smaller budgets and Canadian statistics show businesses with less than 20 employees dont usually offer training. The largest numbers of area residents were employed in government, media, education, and community services. Wholesale and retail trade came second with agriculture and animal services third. The report identified training needs as: Improve employee performance, stress management, customer service, problem solving, team building, and goal setting. Business and management development identified needs as: dealing with difficult employees, computer software training, management courses, leadership development, social media marketing, human resources courses and effective business writing. Sixty per cent of businesses said they saw a need for leadership training. Influences affecting employment were resources easily accessed in Calgary and the distance from Siksika was a factor in aboriginal employment. Cultural barriers and misconceptions need to be addressed and increased communication of employment opportunities would help the number of employed aboriginals in the area to increase. Increasing aboriginal engagement was necessary as the aboriginal community is growing faster than any other in Canada. The final recommendations were forming a panel to develop a common growth vision, attract and retain able employees, which includes welcoming immigrants and aboriginals. Employees needed a solid foundation of essential skills. The plan looks to the development of variety of training and leadership programs within the next two to three years. A collaborative effort with the Rural Development projects expects to align post-secondary education with needs identified by the community. Raising the roof

Roughin it
The Grades 5 & 6 students from Rockyford and Standard schools participated in a two-day hiking and camping trip in Kananaskis Country on Sept 13 - 14. Mr. Wiewel (teacher at Standard School) is a hiking aficionado and loves to instill the sport in the kids. The students went hiking to Cascade Falls where they jumped in and swam with their clothes on and had a fantastic time in the mountain cold water. Left: The entire group of students and parents on the field trip. Right: Teacher Susan Moncks with students trying to dry off in the sun on the rocks.

Trusses have been constructed for Standards new Community Hall and await their positioning on the roof of the buildings shell. Many residents have come out to see the progression of the highly anticipated completion of the New Hall.

The Fat Knight rises

Pat Fule Fule for Thought Life is full of surprises. Sometimes it throws you a curveball when you dont expect it. My own curveball came in the form of weight gain! Its actually not even fair that I have become chunky. I mean, I almost died as a baby because I couldnt keep food down. They eventually got me to be able to eat a light mixture of watered down milk and pablum, and THAT saved my life. Now, however, I dont have that problem I have, over time, become pleasantly plump. Although, Im not really pleasant about the situation! I was driving to the high school the other morning and had a sad realization. I have to lose at least nine pounds JUST to be really overweight! How can THAT be a good incentive, or starting point?? I also was one of those people who, in their 20s and 30s, could eat anything, and not gain weight. Sadly, those days are gone, and now the slightest morsel (even Styrofoam) seems to cause a weight gain. Shirts that are still almost new, have more me than material they are definitely tighter than ever before. Dress shirts are my biggest fear. You cannot hide the fact youre a bit heavy when you button up the collar and attempt to tie the tie. First, the tight collar forces any and all throat fat upwards, so that you look like youre a bullfrog about to choke! The tie becomes the second part of this torture device, as it seals in your throat fat, causing an increasingly red shade to develop. It even becomes difficult to turn your head, so you need to turn at the shoulders to see whats going on! I have tried lately to eat more healthily, and have gotten back to whole grain cereals and salads. I do, however agree with the comedian, John Pinette. If you ever get a chance to see his routines on You Tube, he has one called Around the World in 80 Buffets. He says salad is not a meal, salad COMES with a meal! Im never really satisfied with a salad it feels like Im either just grazing, or Im being punished for BEING chunky! Ive even resorted to those round, rice cakes, which again taste like Styrofoam, and probably have the same nutritional value! The scale becomes your enemy, not your friend. Ive even re-discovered my Catholic roots I pray before I step on it! Lately, God hasnt answered these prayers, but I know he works in mysterious ways. His way seems to be pointing more to a highway WEIGH scale, though! This does bring to mind this latest Summer. You become a little addicted to weighing yourself telling yourself that your scale MUST be wrong! My scale at home NEVER matches the one at the doctors office. I think its a conspiracy (like the gunmen on the grassy knoll). I even got Debbie to drive me to the Highway Weigh Scales outside of Strathmore. One night years ago, a friend and I weighed ourselves there after an evening at the Chestermere Pub. Believe it or not, it IS accurate I was surprised that it could register us accurately. This latest time at the weigh scales, we had to leave, as there was a long line of semi-trailers being weighed. I dont embarrass easily, but taking my turn in a line of trucks to be weighed, would have been REALLY awkward the other trucks waiting to be weighed me standing there I dont even have air brakes well maybe ... in the back! The other thing I dread each fall after a funfilled summer, is the dreaded school photo day. You cant hide from the camera, and they say it adds some pounds to you. Getting the photo taken is one thing, but when it comes back to us, to choose a picture package, THATs where the photo evidence makes its case. I actually asked our Associate Principal if a fat face in my picture would entitle me to a re-take! Its not looking good for the re-take, though. The photographer was kind, however, he didnt even laugh when I asked if hed be able to get all my chins in the shot! So lately I have been trying to eat more healthily. Many of us make these resolutions around Jan.1, when we dont feel all that healthy you know, the day AFTER!? Im eating more fresh fruits/vegetables staying away from the ales I love, and having smaller portions. However, inside of me, is a fat guy, desperately trying to get out. For awhile he has started to, but Im trying to hold him back. So wish me luck, wish many of us luck as we do battle with the bulge. In my case, I have to stop the Fat Knight from rising like the movie! The Hussar School was pleased to welcome the Aqua Van, from the Vancouver Aquarium on Sept. 6. The Aqua Van had some very unique and amazing animals for the kids to touch and ask questions about. it was a wonderful program and all the kids in the school really enjoyed themselves. The school would like to thank Cenovus energy for sponsoring this wonderful program for all of staff and students to participate in. Standing up to immigration fraudsters

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report I am preparing for the Autumn Session of Parliament in Ottawa that begins on Monday, Sept. 17 with a meeting of the Conservative National Caucus before the House of Commons reconvenes. Conservative Members of Parliament and Senators will decide our legislative priorities. There are no secrets though because Canadians elected us with a strong majority to carry out a mandate with the top priority of jobs and the performance of Canadas economy. We will continue to maintain our low-tax plan to create jobs and economic growth a plan that is working. Over the summer months, I managed to meet many constituents from all corners of our large Crowfoot Riding. As your elected federal representative, I always appreciate very much hearing your opinions, constructive criticism, suggestions and support. You can be assured that I take your input seriously and bring it into the policy making debates that our Conservative government engages in with the Opposition parties. I regularly hear about the need to be vigilant when it comes to protecting and maintaining the integrity of Canadas immigration system. We support new Canadians who work hard and play by the rules. We even provide help in many ways so that they will be successful. Canadians are generous people, but we have no tolerance or patience for people who dont play by the rules and who lie or cheat our system to obtain Canadian citizenship. In contrast to the previous Liberal government, our Government will apply the full strength of Canadian law to those who have obtained citizenship fraudulently. The Hon. Jason Kenney, Citizenship and Immigration Minister announced that the federal government is investigating nearly 11,000 individuals for citizenship or residency fraud and 3,100 people are in the process of losing their citizenship. To date, the government has removed or denied admittance to over 600 former permanent residents linked to the investigations, and have denied about 500 citizenship applications where the applicants do not meet the residence requirements. Almost 1,800 applicants linked to the investigations have abandoned their citizenship applications as word about these investigations spreads. As I prepare to return to Ottawa, I remind everyone that the politically correct Opposition parties will be highly critical of these efforts and they will work hard to find hard luck cases to focus on during Question Period and try to make Canadians feel guilty. Our government will continue to work to provide for a faster, more flexible, responsive, and secure immigration system that will better meet Canadas economic needs while continuing to uphold our humanitarian commitments. The Citizenship fraud tip line is 1-888-242-2100 or by email at Citizenship-fraud-tips@cic.gc.ca. The Border Watch Tip Line is 1-888-502-9060. County gains new protective service staff

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor

County residents will see two new faces around the County of Wheatland administrative buildings. Marty Bozak and Ben Mendoza join the Protective Services and Fire, Emergency and Safety department. I am looking forward to interacting with staff in a positive environment and helping the safety programs grow, said Bozak, who takes on the role of Health and Safety Officer. His family relocated from Leslieville, where he worked twelve years with Clearwater County. He

has 10 years experience in agriculture and two years in the safety field. His position will involve mostly internal work, developing and inspecting safety programs within county departments and liaison with local fire departments. Mendoza will be taking on the duties of Peace Officer, ensuring bylaw compliance, traffic duties and dealing with animal control issues. He has a broad employment experience but his interest lies in criminal justice. Previously, he worked as a constable with the RCMP. I look forward to working with the community and establishing great relationships with the county residents, said Mendoza.

Grandparents often say it is easier looking after a grandchild because they can have all the fun without the responsibility. However, they soon come to understand some responsibilities and challenges go with the role of grandparent. The information that Celia Osenton gave in a workshop at the Seniors Expo was a great help to beginning grandparents. The Expo was held Sept 14, at the Hope Church and Osenton touched on the responsibilities and challenges grandparents face with their intergenerational connections. We are responsible for the relationship we have with the child and parent, said Osenton, encouraging grandparents to take ownership of how they interact and communicate with their families, without placing blame. She outlined the roles that grandparents take on. They nurture, care-give, become role models and are the historians of the family. In return, the grandchild gives love, laughter and a chance to experience things from a new perspective. She identified the importance of a good working relationship with the grandchilds parents, encouraging the grandparents to use methods consistent with the rules the parents set out. If you show respect for your childrens rules for the grandchild, it will cement the relationship, said Osenton, emphasizing that grandpar-

ents should not overstep boundaries in attempts to be helpful. In caregiving, there are often discipline issues. While many people use a Time Out method of getting the child to calm down and reflect on their behaviour, Osenton suggested also using the time In method. Time In is giving children examples of positive behaviour that can replace the negative act. Giving them positive choices allows them to feel empowered and eliminates power struggles. She noted the use of the word dont is not often heard by the child, but the rest of the sentence sticks in their brain. She encouraged seniors to familiarize themselves with literature on current child rearing methods, as they may be different from what they used as a parent. She also suggested familiarizing themselves and participating in things that interest the grandchildren, especially as the child gets older. She discussed strained family relationships that occurred prior to the birth of a grandchild. She encouraged grandparents to remedy the situation. To restore the relationship with the parent and child, take small measures toward re-establishing the relationship. Write a letter to their child expressing the desire to have a relationship with the grandchild and work out problems with their children, for the sake of the grandchild. Talk about healthy boundaries. Get a mediator or professional help if necessary.

Fire hits thirteen-mile corner

Manny EvErEtt Times Contributor In the early afternoon on Sept. 17, a fire broke out at the Auto Wreckers and Parts near Standard on the corner of Highway #1 and Hwy 561. RCMP officers that were deployed from Strathmore had the traffic stopped going both east and west. They directed traffic to secondary roads, to allow the various fire departments room to do their jobs. The big pumper could be seen on the township road closest to the fire, directing spray high into the air in a southerly direction. Luckily, the field directly to the north of the situation had already been harvested. With the area being so dry as of late, farmers have been trying to get the last of their crops off and taking extra precautions in blowing off their machines in order to prevent any sparks from igniting. Six fire departments responded to the call out. Standard, Rosebud, Strathmore Rural, Dalum, Strathmore Town and the Rockyford departments

The people effected by this do not have a voice, so you are the voices for them, said Tibeau. She encouraged people to direct their concerns directed to Linda Nelson at the Town, speak to their area councilors and the mayor. To say things wont change is not realistic. They will change. Make them accountable for your programs and the follow through, Tibeau said. It is up to the community to say we need these programs to continue. Dwight Stanford expressed regret that he could not attend, but indicated the Town would have more information after the new FCSS Coordinator was placed.

The traits of a leader

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Dr. Jim Frideres, Director of Research for the Banff Centre spoke to leaders gathered at the Civic Centre on Sept. 13, about the kind of leadership needed by collaborative agencies in dealing with Albertas employment and training initiatives. He said a new way of thinking is needed about where Alberta organizations are headed. When we look at the state of the world today we see a mixed venture, rapid innovation in a connected society is transforming the way we work and play, said Frideres. We find the challenges more urgent and interconnected. He encouraged leaders to cast aside cautious analytical hesitance, and take risks by collaborating with unlikely alliances, leading to decisive action regardless of the possibility of error Some would perceive this as reckless. Frideres said it was transcending barriers. If leaders want to leverage their impact and that of their community, then working in partnership is the most effective way to do it, said Frideres. He understood that the process wasnt easy because it involves the lack of control, setting aside private goals and removing the individual desire to implement those goals. He referenced the 2005 Government of Alberta document called A place to grow. It emphasizes a cross government approach to rural growth. It means that rural communities need to commence sustaining a network beyond their current network. It spreads risk, knowledge and makes an impact, Frideres said. He designated the rural community as stewards of the land, preserving community, provincial cohesion and creation of residence and work in a local area. Many people have a natural caution, making incremental change, looking to what seemed to work in the past and do more of it. History shows that the most significant cultural transformations occur when leaders try to make big changes, said Frideres. He recommended all leaders read Built to Last: Successful Habits of Visionary Companies by Jim Collins. The book outlines why incremental decision-making is not successful. For rural areas to flourish in a fast moving economy, he asked that leaders develop community based on local-global axis, harness their resources to identify how the future might unfold. Most choose their own preferred scenario or choose one scenario over another. He said look at the reality of the situation for unlikely developments and prepare for all contingencies. The future develops from action and inaction. It is a matter of players involved and the effect of outside influences on the outcome, said Frideres. Most people think it is taking due diligence to study a problem and look at all angles before taking Frideres action. maintains such action will leave leaders stuck in spiral of contemplation, where perpetual study replaces action. I call this paralysis of analysis, said Frideres. It doesnt mean assessment and review isnt needed, but waiting for expensive long term studies as the opportunities pass by. A true leader recognizes the fine line between the need for action or inaction. .To continue to respond creatively, leaders need to continue to experiment. Instead of getting comfortable when things are working, he suggests looking ahead for new tools and methods. So what if quick action fails? Faderis said history proves great leaders wear failures as a badge of honour. They knew that the response to that failure was what is important. Overcoming failures with learning make us stronger. Leaders have to take steps to bring leadership back. He suggests rural leaders need to take three steps: maintain collaborative conversation with the community, involve unlikely partners, and commit to overcoming inaction with experimentation, sharing, risk taking and learning from failures. Life is a risk, said Frideres.

Spartans big league experience

Mario Prusina Times Editor It was a day to remember for a pair Strathmore Spartans football teams when they hit the field at McMahon Stadium Sept. 15. The local peewee and bantam football teams enjoyed the big league experience in Week 2 of their respective seasons. The peewee Spartans earned a 32-6 victory over Innisfail, prior to the bantam team destroying Innisfail 68-0 in second game. We had a game (day) breakfast as a team and they really had the jitters (and) if you aint got the jitters, youre not ready for the game, said peewee head coach Chuck Holloway. The first play, they were a little tentative, (but) as the game went on, they relaxed. They got up pretty good (for this game) this is actually the first time they ever beat Innisfail. They were looking forward to this game because they got embarrassed last year in the stadium, so they were up for this game. Behind a solid running game, the Spartans exposed weaknesses in their opposition and built a huge lead going into halftime. According to Holloway, the Spartans will use the same approach going into the remainder of the season. Overall, I think were going to have a really good season, said Holloway. I feel that we have a lot of firepower on offence, but we make a lot of mistakes we still have a lot of learning to do as well. I want to win the provincial (championship) and graduate some of the guys to the bantam program. The Spartans, who improved to 2-0 on the season, will now host Sylvan Lake at 1 p.m. at the Strathmore High School football field on Sept. 22. Meanwhile, the bantam team was firing on all cylinders against Innisfail in the second game. The Spartans built a big lead early and never looked back. The kids were excited to be there for a lot of them, it was the first time ever (to have) experience of playing on the big field, said bantam head coach Doug Klauck. It was a big win it was the first win in a couple of years (for the program) and it sort of got the monkey off of their back. According to Klauck, the team brought the proper intensity and they were more prepared mentally than they were in Week 1. He believes that the team has a huge desire to win and be successful, and that has translated on to the field They really want to win, said Klauck. Some of them moved up from the peewee ranks and theyve had success. Theyve brought a positive energy to practice and the games. The bantam Spartans will look to improve on their 1-1 record when they travel to Red Deer on Sept. 22 to take on Hunting Hills. Meanwhile, the Strathmore Spartans high school football team will look to pick up their first win of the season when they travel to Medicine Hat on Sept. 21. The Spartans next home game is slated for Sept. 29, when they host McCoy at 2 p.m. at the high school football field.

The UFA Bisons hosted the Calgary Northstars on Sept. 14 during their annual exhibition tournament at the Strathmore Family Centre this past weekend. After playing five games in four days, the Bisons immediately finalized their roster for the season opener later this month.

Bisons pick their herd

Mario Prusina Times Editor Despite not winning one game in their exhibition tournament this past weekend, the UFA Bisons are confident in their future. That was the message Bisons head coach Jeremy Friesen conveyed after making the final cuts to his roster, immediately after the Sept. 13-16 tourney at the Strathmore Family Centre. Its not about winning and losing at this point, its about challenging certain individual players to do things certain ways and try and see if they are capable of playing the game we need them to play, said Friesen. A lot of the guys did that and some guys didnt, so that was the separation we were looking for. We definitely had some tough decisions to make and at the end of the day, thats all we could ask for. We challenged them to leave everything out on the ice and to make things as challenging for us as they could. We definitely thought they did that. The Bisons opened the tournament with a 2-1 loss to Red Deer on Sept. 13, before posting a 4-4 tie the following day versus the Calgary Northstars. The local triple-A midget team then suffered 7-4 loss on Saturday morning, before losing 4-0 to Red Deer in the semi-final later in the evening. The Bisons finished off the tournament with a tight 3-2 loss to the Northstars on Sept. 16. The work ethic was always there (but) its always challenging when you have kids who have never played together, come in and try and play the game the same way, said Friesen. A couple of things we really liked was our attention to detail to the minimal system stuff we had a chance to go over with. Every game we got better and more structured. The end result was obviously not where we needed it to be, but its just little adjustments we have to make in our game (to be successful). According to Friesen, the Bisons are very skilled on defence, with a nice blend of offence and players who can shut down the opposition. Up front, the Bisons have size and speed, which will enable them to bump and crash in the offensive zone. He believes there is a tremendous amount of depth up front. With the team now selected, the goal is to use the time away from the rink to form a bond among the players. The Bisons will play one more exhibition game against the Canadian Womens National Team on Sept. 26, before opening the season on the road. The team will begin the regular season against the Calgary Royals on Sept. 28 (8 p.m., Stu Peppard Arena), before tangling with the Calgary Northstars on Sept. 30 (2:30 p.m., Father David Bauer Arena). We are excited to get (the season) going, said Friesen. We cant wait.

September 21
The market and its vendors wish to thank their many customers for their support this year. Cake will be served. will be held September 29 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. A full turkey dinner will be served.

Mario Prusina Times Editor The Strathmore Spartans senior high school volleyball team gained momentum after disposing of Foothill Composite High School on Sept. 11. The Lady Spartans dropped Foothills 25-19 in the first frame, before earning a 25-21 win in the second frame and 25-16 in the third, to earn the win. Meanwhile, the junior team didnt have the same success against Foothills. The Jr Spartans lost the first frame 25-20, before taking the second frame 25-23. However, Foothills earned the win with a 25-9 and a 25-10 the next two frames to take the win.

Margaret Mowatt (Cormack)

Margaret passed away very peacefully, and unexpectedly, at the Strathmore Extended Care Unit on Thursday afternoon, September 13, 2012. (This was her mothers, brothers, and nephews birthdays.) She was predeceased by her husband Carl (October 27, 1987), parents Jane and Jim Cormack, sisters Marion, Ida,Catherine McCool and husband Pat, Jean Bremner and husband Charles; brothers William, James (Jim) Cormack his wife Faye and son James, mother and father-in-law Marie and Soren Sorensen, brother-in-law Bill Sorensen and his wife Dee, sister-in-law Elsie Bower and children Michael and Barbara, and brother-in-law James Miller. Margaret leaves to mourn her passing daughter Carleen; grandchildren Loni, Warren (Rhonda), Derek and Leanne Keall; great grandchildren Sean, Tanner, Britnie, Meghan, Ty and Lauren; greatgreat grandson Seth, sister Gladys Miller; and numerous nieces and nephews. Margaret was born and raised on a farm six miles east of Strathmore. She attended Aitkenstead School where she was the infamous back-catcher of the local girls baseball team. She was asked to play on the Strathmore Mens team as they were short a player and this is where she met her future husband Carl. They were married December 17, 1940 and farmsteaded the area that is now Brentwood, Maplewood, Strathaven, Green Meadows, Cambridge Glen, Thornbriar, Crystal Ridge, the Hospital, schools and Rodeo Grounds. Margaret was a member of the United Church Choir for more than 50 years, Order of the Eastern Star, Sam Blair Chapter (62 years), and the UCW. She always loved her gardens, flowers and manicured lawns, dancing the night away, playing cards with the group and hurried games of golf, because supper was always at 5:00. She was the Matriarch and we will miss her greatly. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Strathmore United Church at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Alzheimers Society of Calgary (201, 222 58 Ave SW, Calgary, AB, T2H 2S3) or to the Strathmore Extended Care Unit (200 Brent Blvd, Strathmore, AB, T1P 1J9).
