DURING AN ANCIENT SITE SURVEY ON CATALINA ISLAND LUXURY LODGING AT USCs WRIGLEY MARINE SCIENCE CENTER

Explore and uncover unknown Native American sites on Catalina Island! Experience the intersection of ancient history and technology during this unique field experience. No previous experience required.

USC undergraduates are invited to apply for funded positions as team members in USCs archaeology research experience: Catalina Island Archaeology Survey
WHEN? Friday through Sunday, October 26-28, 2012 WHERE? USC Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island, 22 miles off the coast from Los Angeles WHAT? You will discover and document unrecorded ancient Native American sites created by the original inhabitants of the island: the Tongva tribe. You will learn how to use one of the most transformational technologies to impact archaeology - global positioning systems (GPS) - and its use in geographic information systems (GIS). You will also learn about land and sea resources and Native American traditions. You will be an explorer, a scientist, an archaeologist. WHY? As an archaeologist at USC, you can make a difference in a research project while learning skills that future archaeologists wont be able to live without: global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS). The tools and methods you gain here can be applied anywhere in the world. SCHEDULE: Mondays and Wednesdays throughout October (times TBA) a series of lectures by leading archaeologist, historians, and technology experts (live lectures for students who can attend; videotaped for students who cannot attend) Friday Oct 26 morning travel to Catalina Island on USCs boat morning boat to Catalina with orientation from archaeologists; arrive at USC Wrigley Marine Science Center, where we will have our meals and lodging; hike around Catalina with lectures on history and the natural environment Saturday Oct 27 all day on Catalina Island archaeological survey in coastal areas near USC Wrigley Marine Science Center, followed by group event in the evening Sunday Oct 28 all day on Catalina Island with return to Los Angeles in late afternoon ancient site visits; debrief, return to Los Angeles on chartered boat HOW TO SECURE YOUR SPOT ON THIS RESEARCH TEAM: Space is limited and funding for this program is competitive.
