MINUTES APPROVED Bowmore Parent Council Meeting Thursday, September 29, 2011

Welcome to Parents - Rebecca Call for volunteers Introduction of the new council: Spring Election Co-Chair: Rebecca Collier Doyle Secretary: Orla Kipling QSP Chair: Nancy Botelho Treasurer: Ryan Doyle Fall Election Green Team Head: Jennifer Jones Green Team Assistant: Lesley Griffin Communications: Kathleen Sandusky Ward 16 Rep: Ellen Braganca Co-Chair: Debora Morran Member at Large: Stephanie Simmons Fundraising Head: Lori Malik Principals update - Lilian Great to see such an amazing turn out to the council meeting Her fifth year loves working with the school, happy to be back, level of support from parents is phenomenal Thanks to the election committee, both the May and September committee for working to have a good cross representative of parents and for their hard work to pull council together. Introduction to the admin team that will help through the year with parent council Stevan Ivancevic, and Peppi Kondilis-Minos, and two teacher reps - Marlene Calligan with Leah Jarvis assisting Starting the year with exciting news pool was closed at the end of last year for repairs, pool has been upgraded to very high standards, put extra drains around the edge of the pool, the markers are now at 100% of the new code, emergency button on the wall at the side of the pool, repainted change rooms. Randy our head caretaker should be thanked for his hard work in getting a lot of work completed so well and on time for the start of school. Thank you to the dedicated parents working with the community to advocate for the Bowmore pool and trying to keeping the City of Toronto funding for the recreation activities that share the cost of running the pool. Exciting news enrolment was an issue, grade 4 and 5 classes had high numbers. There were classes of 40 for some junior grades. Recommended average for grade 4 to 8 is 25, but there is no maximum. For Primary there is a max of 20. On

Friday the school was given FTE teacher to be assigned to work with the grade 4 and 5 classes to work-share. teacher will be teaching the grade 4 math program. The rest of the afternoon the teacher will be supporting Mr C and Ms Scott in their classroom there are no caps for senior school. Directors visit honour for the Director to visit, superintendent chooses which school for the Director to visit. He had a lot of positive comments, met with different classes and clubs at Bowmore, talked to students and admin. Very positive visit. Good and the bad with the high numbers issues with transportation, lots of kids apply for extra spots for bussing. This year 2 grade 4 children have applied, and 14 grade 6s have applied Lilian is asking for input to be forwarded to her ASAP on how to manage the draw for the extra spots.

Financial Report Ryan Started this year with $14,860, committed $6,000 already, $3,000 to scientists in the school and $3,000 to prologue theatre this does not include the $2000 thats typically allocated per division (Primary, Junior and Senior) Full year budget to be proposed at the October 20th meeting Will post a copy of the funding questionnaire online asking for responses back by Oct 5 so they can be discussed at the next parent council meeting Advice about the Fundraising Plan - Rebecca When is the fundraising plan in soon the TDSB has a date for when its due. Have to provide a plan to the board by mid October Need the fundraising ideas ASAP to vote on at the next meeting Hope that parents that submitting requests for a fundraising event will lead the event Seena former Norway parents, kids in senior school. Quebec school trip - $430 per student is quite expensive. Would like to have a senior school fundraiser specific for the school trip Grade 7/8 parents brought forward a plan for a Breakfast with Santa to be sponsored by the Grade 7 and 8 students and their parents, to support the grade 8 Quebec trip. The council has asked the group thats organizing to come back to the October 20th meeting with a proposal, including facilities, eco impact and how much funding is being requested. Target date is Saturday December 3rd. Also was suggested to speak with the Kindergarten teachers about the kindergartens Breakfast for Santa held during school hours to make sure theres no overlap.

Call for Volunteers Need lice checkers January 11th, Nancy and Michelle Ostafin have volunteered to be trained and work on the program with Sandi Prosser Eco School Jennifer Jones Gold Level this year

Litter-less lunch program would like to continue encourage more involvement in this program In October the garbages will be removed from the junior lunch room as a pilot program Continuing with the Eco Hero program this year each month a child can be nominated by a parent, teacher or the admin. Each child that wins gets a Eco Hero t-shirt and their name in the newsletter and on the front board Wednesday will be walking Wednesdays thinking about the shoe award Participated in the Great Canadian Shoreline clean up in the ravine at Upper Gerrard was a great success Hope to have the Eco Picnic again this year will need volunteers

QSP Nancy In the past few years the school population has gone from 800 to 600 but we still have about $9000 in profit each year Targeting $9000 +++ this year as well Lots of advertising Would like to explore how to better engage the senior school students in the QSP program ideas welcome Go QSP, buy magazines!!! Grants Orla Though employee volunteerism on the council and at council events, RBC has donated $1500 over the last few years to Bowmore. Many companies have Employee Volunteer Grant Programs wed like to help Bowmore parents take advantage of these grant programs if you or your partner have an employee volunteer grant program the Parent Council would be happy to work with you to get your required volunteer hours. Please contact the council through Facebook or at bowmoresc@gmail.com for more information. Movie Nights - Orla Purpose of the movie nights is a community event, with a side-order of fundraising. The food served at the movie night meets the new nutritional guidelines of the school board exemptions are not required for movie nights! Looking for a volunteer to train, Orla only has a few more years at the school and would like to ensure the tradition of the movie nights continues if youre interested in being trained (its super easy) please contact us through Facebook or at bowmoresc@gmail.com for more information. Also always looking for movie suggestions

Pizza Lunches Joanne is leading pizza lunches

Everything meets the new nutritional guidelines Was asked to switch from apples to bananas but the increase in cost doesnt look like this is the best option Have the first four dates Oct 28, Nov 25, Dec 16, Jan 25 Envelopes will be sent out shortly Ms Jarvis will be the teacher coordinator Need volunteers from 11:20 to noon on each pizza date - please contact us through Facebook or at bowmoresc@gmail.com for more information

Request from Lilian - For fundraising events she would appreciate details on what facilities are needed, and how the event plans to meet with the eco schools guidelines Curriculum night Pizza sales need volunteers VOTE HELD on selling baked goods (using an exception) or not selling baked goods (not needing to use one of 10 school exemptions) VOTE PASSES unanimously no baked goods for curriculum night Need to think about how we can have bake sales and meet with the requirements of the school boards new nutritional guidelines Next meeting is October 20th 6pm in the staff room, babysitting and pizza provided
