Suggested Reading: Francis Preve, Remixer's Bible Build Better Beats. Backbeat Books (2006) Sound on Sound magazine Future Music Learning Outcomes Demonstrate the skills to create remixes of a given song using audio production processes and evaluate the results and your own skill development.

Scenario Motown records have heard some of your music productions and have asked you to provide 2 remixes of Stevie Wonders Superstition to mark the 40th anniversary of its release. The first remix will be to a brief from the record company. The second can be a style of your choice but should be contrasting to the first.

REMIX BRIEF We need a dubstep style remix for airplay on radio stations like Radio 1. Ideally the track should contain elements of the vocal (possibly the chorus) and retain elements of the theme of the original track. We really like the sounds of Chase & Status, Benga and Skrillex so perhaps reference some of their material.

Assignment You must produce 2 contrasting remixes of a given piece of music to a set deadline, one of which is to a client brief. This work must meet the following requirements: 1. exploration of mix types: e.g. dub/house /extended/drum and bass/instrumental etc with selection and justification of a preferred option(s); 2. assessment of the key areas of the given piece in relation to the chosen mix types. i time signature; ii key signature; iii BPM; 3. the remixes must complement and retain aspects of original song; 4. the remixes are a convincing example of the chosen remix style; 5. there is creative use of audio editing and effects to include timestretch audio, pitch shifting, tempo changes and audio processing; 6. the creation of two mix-downs reflective of the remix styles. You will also need to assess the legal implications of producing your remixes, focusing on: 1. an analysis of copyright ownership of original recording and the remixes; 2. an evaluation of potential payment methods from remixing, including gratis (free service), one-off payments and points structure Finally evaluate how well the remixes created in 1.1 meet the specified criteria, using feedback from the client (where applicable), and assess strengths and areas for development.
