But best of all there are the days when the mango and the logwood blossom When bushes are full of the sound of bees and the scent of honey, When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest breath of air, When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow stars And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.

Was he going to raise my pay? He went on. You must realise that Im crazy about you, darling. He was calling me darling again. He was being serious. I have to say that at this point I was feeling very confused. Five minutes ago my boss didnt want to be seen with me. Now he was saying he was crazy about me! Such strange mistakes QWERTYUIOP, the top line of letters on a typewriter, repeated over and over again! Thank God there had been no one to notice. Theyd think she had gone mad. She must be more careful. Keep her mind on the job, not allow it to wander out of the window into the sunny shopping street below. Putting fresh paper into the typewriter, she began again. She was tempted to look at the keyboard . . . Dont look at the keys! Keep your eyes away! Mrs Price was always saying. No peeing. Youll never make a good typist if you cant do it by touch. YOURE DROWNING ME, it complained pathetically, and she swiped at the words with her brush. HELP! Another swipe. PLEASE! But Lucy showed no mercy. The large bottle was half-empty when she reached the end of the letter in triumph. Yours faithfully, George Ross, She typed, and sat back with a sigh of relief. The machine began to rattle. She was tired of being poor. She was fed up with macaroni cheese and baked beans. She was sick of second-hand clothes. We are jumble sailors on the rough sea of life, her mother would say. Practice 1 Through the novel The Curse, gender stereotyping is portrayed through how females should behave. This can be seen especially through Azreen. For example, Azreens school friends start to cast suspicious eyes towards her when she behaves unlady-like. She plays hockey with the boys and even laughs like a bunch of hyenas with them. To them, as a woman, Azreen is not expected to be tomboyish and hangs too closely with boys.

Practice 2 An interesting character in the novel- The Curse is the old lady. She is an educated woman as she has knowledge of herbal medicine to treat illnesses. Her house is always neat and situated by the hillside. She is a caring and concerned woman as she takes Azreen in and gives her food and shelter whenever she has fights and problems. She is also a resourceful person and she is a good cook and her recipes and secret ingredients are very much sought after.

Practice 3 The value in life that I have learnt in the novel- Catch us if you can is The Importance of Family. Sacrifices for family are honoured and explored, as are the family bonds that survive adversity. Family responsibility in the novel is best displayed by Rorys constant care of his grandfather. Very early in age, Rory has realised that there was only Granda and me to make up a family. Rory does not know any

other family love. His father had left them when he was very young. Granda had taken care of him all his life and now, as Granda is getting old and forgetful, and is never quite well, it is his turn to look after him.

Practice 4 The incident which is memorable in Catch us if you can is when Granda is sent to Rachnadar, Rory knows that he has to get him away from that place. Though torn with desperation at times ( Grandas carelessness with the chip pan had landed him in hospital and Rory at Castle Street), Rory plans the Great Escape and gets him away from the hospital where they put old people in.

Practice 5 In the novel Step by Wicked Step, Richard reveals the pain of the knowledge of his dying father and the intrusion of Mr. Coldstone into the family. Then Richards father dies. Mr Coldstone is very harsh towards Richard. Richard feels that his own happiness is not counted for. He wishes for his father to wake up from the grave and tell him that all things in the house have gone wrong since the fathers death. Richard had practically become a stranger in his own house. His house was like a tomb. Richard leaves the house. He feels that his presence is not wanted by his mother.

Practice 6 Claudia are the two characters I have chosen to compare and contrast. Although they are two differing characters, they also have some similarities. Both Colin and Claudia come from broken or separated families. They both have step parents. Colins mother has left his biological father and `took up with Jack. Jack is the only father figure Colin ever know. However, Colins mum leaves Jack after a while. This causes him to miss Jack so badly that it hurts. On the other hand, Claudias father has left her mother for another woman, Stella. She feels disloyal to her mum whenever she has a good time with her father and Stella. Both Colin and Claudia really want their parents to reconcile as they pine for how it used to be when they were happy.

About the Author

Catherine MacPhail was born on 25 January 1946 inGreenock,Scotland. She has an established reputation as a writer of gritty, urban stories that tackle emotional and contemporary issues that eventually work towards a positive solution.

Synopsis

It is story of a devoted grandson and loving grandfather. There is adventure and thrilling chase and escape which bring about many interesting moments for both Rory and grandfather. We feel as we read of a grandfather who is sent to the old peoples home and his grandson to the childrens home, a separation that is extremely difficult for both of them. Rory and his grandfather, Granda, have looked after each other since Rorys dad walked out on them. Granda is given to lapses in memory (putting Rorys homework down the rubbish chute and the rubbish in Rorys school bag) and completely irresponsible behaviour (setting fire to his coat at a Parents Evening), but he has a generous heart. Rory acts as his carer until there is a fire in the flat and the authorities decide to separate them. Rory comes

up with an escape plan. But their path of escape is not easy as their pictures are in the newspapers and on every television screen. Their journey is full of unexpected moments when it looks like they will be caught by the authorities.

His Granda however is very frail and needs a lot of medication. On the way they meet a lot of people who have recognised them from the news. These people have actually helped them in their venture. Rory and his Granda travelled by train, boat, caravan, cars and most of the time with their feet. In the end, sadly, Rory has to end the venture, but not by being caught, he actually had to go to the police to find help for his Granda, whose heart had stopped. Rory had been hoping that his father who had abandoned the family and whom he has no seen for the last ten years would reach out and help. The story ends on a happy note when Rorys dad gets in touch with him due to the publicity.

CHARACTERS

Major characters

Granda

Rorys grandfather. He is also known as Mister McIntosh. He is elderly and partially senile with a tendency to forget what he is doing (never puts off his pipe properly till it smoulders into flames). He loves his grandson dearly and cannot bear the thought of being separated from him. Although he is hurt by his sons departure from the family and after his daughter-in-laws death, is dedicated to taking care

of Rory. He is delightfully funny. He is often repeating phrases and is able to surprise the reader in some instances as for example the incidence when he hit the bully unconscious inPerthrailway station and stole a car.

Rory

He is a young boy, still in school who is dedicated to taking care of his aging grandfather. Shows determination and courage even in desperate situations (when the grandfather is admitted in Rachnadar). Mature, he understands why his grandfather refuses to meet his own father. He has a rich inner life and capable of growing and changing. He has managed by adapting to every new situation with hope and optimism.

Minor Characters

Val Jessup

She is a young and eager social worker who is responsible for Rorys well being. She is also very responsible, she is anxious that Granda receives his full pension benefits and arranges for Rory to stay at the childrens home inCastle Street.

Mrs Foley

She is Rorys teacher who is keenly aware of his inability to pass up his homework because of his duty to care for his grandfather. She is very concerned when Granda is admitted into the hospital and realises that Rory should not be in the childrens home.

Darren

Darren is Rorys best friend in school who helps him to stay in the mothers caravan when Granda is taken away from Rachnadar.

Jeff McIntosh He is Rorys father. He comes back home to be with his father and son when he sees them on television.

POINT OF VIEW

The novel is seen through the eyes of Rory. We as the readers get access to his young mind how he thinks, feels and reacts and at the same time we can appreciate Rorys growth and maturation because the first person narration has made it possible for an inside view of Rorys mind.

Symbolism

The journey and the escape -It symbolises the desired freedom and that both need to be together.

The caravan It gives the idea or feeling of safety, privacy and security; both feel very safe in the caravans until it is time to run again.

Movies and movie stars

They refer to Grandas constant memory of what he likes

and remembers best . Here they are always tending to verge on an element of fantasy.

THEMES:

Bridging the generation gap

There is a young boys love for his aging grandfather. The novel explores key issues that young boys of this age may confront as their characters are shaped by relationships around them. There are challenges of growing up and learning about responsibility shown in the life of Rory. Rory is eleven years old and he should be playing football and enjoying being a boy but he has the big responsibility of keeping Granda safe and away from Rachnadar. Granda looked after him in those days and now he knows it is his duty to look after him now. Rory accepts that responsibility with a great attitude and does not hesitate to do his duty. But from being just a student, Rory grows up within a short frame of time to make decisions and to act with great responsibility.

Family and relationships

There is a journey of love and protection between a grandfather and his grandson. Love, compression and family relationships are portrayed through their actions. Granda and Rory love each other and that guides all their actions. Granda loves his son, Jeff but feels let down by what happened years ago. He loves Rorys mother dearly too. Granda looked after Rory before and now Rory wants to look after his Granda. That is family love.

p Social and civic responsibilities

How society tries to intervene and help those who they think are unfairly treated or who they think deserve a better treatment. The novel emphasizes the importance of social responsibility. Doctor Nicol, the teacher, Mrs. Foley, Darrens mum and Val Jessup feel that Rory need help at home and that he should be enjoying his boyhood and not be burdened with the responsibility of looking after an ageing and ailing grandfather. The police officials and the nurses are seen as kind and compassionate. The inmates at the childrens home too care about what is happening to Rory and want to help him. Members of the public believe strongly that the two should not be separated and voice their opinion on television. The great escape would not be possible without the support and help of the public. Thus society has a great role to play in molding people to be what they are.

Social bias

How society is quick to decide what the aged and ailing as well as the young should be treated. The social welfare service sees to the very young and the very old. The decision of the authorities is not always right and should be questioned. Ruby the traveler complain that social workers check on Tyrone to see if he is getting his education and is not being abused in any way . The authorities can be nasty to the gypsies and people on the fringes of society. The police bring fear and anxiety but they are also seen as being compassionate in their dealings with Rory. The authorities chase after Rory and Granda but the public is mainly on their side and people help them all the way.

Moral Values:

Family relationships and bonds must be appreciated and maintained. There must be compassion and kindness.

Communication is an important feature among friends and family members. It results in the loving and caring attitude generally.

Trust is a vital component in bridging generations. We must not be judgmental as appearances may not be what they seem.

Discussion

The novel is a sort of love story, about the love between generations: it shows a young boy realising that someone he loves deeply may die. It also challenges assumptions and stereotypes: those we should trust sometimes let us down; those we might not trust sometimes prove to be our friends.

synopsis

Robbos parents broke off when he was

six. Whenever his dad visits them, the adults

end up in arguments. Finally, dad stopped his

visits. Robbo and Callie had to visit his house

which was cold and horrible.

Callie hated her stepfather Roy whom

she called the Beard. He started to interfere

with a lot of things. Both the children love

their half brother, Dumpa. Dumpa adores Roy.

One day, Roy left the house after a row with

Mum. Dumpa missed him a lot. The children

made a plan so that their Dad and Mum can

bump into each other at the arcade. Everything

worked out as planned but not for long. Soon

Mum and Dad had their usual argument. Both

kids were baffled with their attitudes.

The children did not give up hope.

Infact, they tried something else. This time their

plan worked. Mum and Dad had something to

hand over to each other. So, the children were

pretty sure that their parents would patch up. At

that time, Mum got cheesed off with Roy.

Unfortunately Dumpas the problem.

He is three years old.

One day Roy caught Callie pushing her bike

down the very narrow space between the bushes

and the car. Roy warned her but as she was in a

hurry, she took the short cut. In her anger, she

told Roy that he had no rights to tell her what to

as he was not her father. He caught her by the

wrist and swung her around. Then in a stern

voice, he told that it was his car. As the

argument was in progress, Mum intervened. Roy

was furious as to why he did not have the right

to correct her. All the while, he had been running

for the girl too.

All mums terms ended with Roy

insisting he had every right to make Callie to do

what he told her. Mum was worried that Callie

might start to hate him. As days went by, things

were getting worse and worse. Roy decided not

not to do anything to people who were not civil

to her. He refused to drive them to Hawksmoor

Hill with their toboggans. Callie was

disappointed. Roy was as stubborn as Callie.

Roy was busy clearing out the shed.

Dumpa was trailing in the snow. Mum called a

few times but Dumpa refused to come inside.

Even when Mum went to persuade Dumpa in,

the little one refused to come inside. Roy was

adamant and refused to help Mum get Dumpa

into the house.

Then, Robbo was sent to persuade Dumpa

to come inside. Robbo tried to trick Dumpa but

was unsuccessful. Next, he turned to Roy who

assured that Dumpa was wrapped up perfectly

warm. Roy too, refused to get into the house

which was icy cold towards him. As Robbo stood

there for long, Roy let Dumpa to get into the

house. Dumpa agreed with a price of a strawberry

rocket from the freezer. Dumpa was to get into the

house after he had finished it.

The ice lolly did not melt in the icy air.

So Mum decided to fetch Dumpa in but afraid of

triggering another argument with Roy. Roy told

the truth that Roy felt unwelcome in that house.

Mum was flabbergasted with such a remark.

Robbo persisted and finally Mum agreed with

her reasoning. Callie can never seem to get along

with Roy and Mum was stuck in the middle.

Despite all the persuasion, Callie never

wanted to compromise with Roy nor accept him

as part of the family. When Mum knew that

Callie should move in with her Dad. Before that

she went a dozen times to make sure Callies

favourites were in the house. Mum also read out

a list of duties for Dad. Robbo and Callie felt

their Mum needed a holiday after all the work

but again Dumpa was the problem. The children

volunteered to look after Dumpa with Dads

approval.

synopsis

Pixie stays at her fathers place during

weekends fortnightly. Her Stepmother is

Lucy she has two step sisters. They are Sophie

and Hetty. Dad promised her that she would

have a own room but Hetty and Sophie had a

terrible quarrel that it was decided that Hetty

moves out of her sisters room into Pixies

room.

Pixie hates Hettys habits. Hetty drives her

mad. She hates the way Hetty cocks her head on

one side and fiddles with her hair, the way Hetty

sniffs when she reads and roll the cat over the

carpet like a sausage. Most of all she hates the

way Hetty teases her name- Priscilla.

Hetty was good at Maths and has good

natural manners. She is also good with

animals. She gets Excellent written by her

teacher for her homework. Pixie thought of

ways to get her out of the room. Pixie

started to do things to show the room is haunted.

Pixie started to tell ghost stories about the room

but Hetty did not get scared. So Pixie tried to

disturb her by asking her maths questions. Hetty

went through each problem with Pixie- Pixie

wasnt even trying to listen but she must have

understood because on the next week she actually

got the comment as Well done! from her

teacher.

Next, Pixie tried the silent treatment to get

Hetty out of her room. Pixie had expected Hetty

to go back to Sophies room but Hetty went to

her mother and told her what was going on.

Lucy, her stepmother came to her room and

talked to her. They argued each one of them

poured their hearts out. In the end they cried

their eyes out and hugged each other.

Lucy moved Hettys bed back into Sophies

room. Pixie is happy now- at least she is not

pretending any more and everyone knows how

she feels. Hetty no longer calls her Pricilla.

Pixie comes down more often and when she

needs help with her homework, Hetty helps her.

Hetty can explain things well. Pixies teacher

even said that if she keeps on like that, she might

get promoted to the next level.

In return, Pixie tells Hetty ghost stories. Hetty

likes to listen to ghost stories. After listening

to the stories, she goes back to her room.

Sometimes, when Sophie goes to sleep over at

a friends house, Hetty will sleep in Pixies room.

They drag the Hettys mattress into Pixies room.

Dad hears them giggling and suggests that

they leave the mattress on Pixies floor, but

they just ignore him.

have accidentally stuck, because a week later, for the first time in my life, I found

a neat little Well done! on my maths test). But it was still pointless. Hetty didnt

even seem to notice me wasting hours of her time, let alone mind.

REVIEWING FORM ONE LITERATURE COMPONENT TITLES

The poems studied in Form One are: The River Valerie Bloom and Mr. Nobody Unknown author. There is only one short story to study and that is: Flipping Fantastic Jane Langford and apart from that you have to study a Novel. Lets review each one of them so that you will be prepared for your examination.

NOVELS

The following are the novels studied in the literature component in English Language

Black Beauty

Anna Sewell Jules Verne Arthur Conan Doyle

Journey to The Centre of the Earth TheBoscombeValley Mystery

SYNOPSIS OF THE NOVELS

Synopsis of Black Beauty

Black Beauty tells of the life of Black Beauty, a colt living inEngland. The story begins with Black Beauty having a happy childhood growing up in the peaceful countryside. In his later years, he encounters cruelty. Things go from bad to worse when Black Beautys new owners begin renting him out for profit. Black Beauty endures a life of mistreatment and disrespect in a world that shows little regard for the happiness of animals. However, the story ends on a happy note. Black Beauty spends the rest of his days treated well on a farm.

Synopsis of Boscombe Valley Mystery

A man named Charles McCarthy has been murdered. McCarthy was killed by a blow to the back of the head while standing next to Boscombe Pool. Witnesses saw McCarthy walking towards the pool, followed quickly by his son, James; they also saw the two of them fighting violently. James is found near the body of his father with blood on his hands. Inspector Lestrade, the Scotland Yard officer who loves giving Holmes a hard time, is sure that James is guilty. But Holmes keeps defending James: after all, he notes, Cooee is an Australian cry, and McCarthys last words werent a rat but Ballarat, an Australian city name. Fortunately, Jamess case is dismissed due to lack of evidence, James marries Miss Turner, and John Turner takes his secret to the grave seven months later.

Synopsis of Journey to the Centre of the Earth

A German scientist, Otto Lidenbrock, discovered the existence of a volcanic tube or tunnel that lead to the centre of the earth. His discovery was based on a cryptic note that was found in an old manuscript

he had bought. His nephew, Axel who helped him decipher the coded message and Hans, their guide, set off to explore the tunnel. They encountered astonishing sights of prehistoric animals, plants, natural disasters and unusual landscapes. The living creatures that they met represent the different era or time from the beginning of earth. The geological time is depicted in layers which are synonymous to the rock layers of the earth. The tunnel ended in Italy.

Sample Question 1:

Write about an incident that you think is important. Give reasons why you think the incident is important.

The most exciting part or important moment in the story is when Black Beauty gets injured while riding Mr. Reuben Smith one late night. Reuben Smith is the new stable boy. There is a loose nail in Beautys front shoe. While riding, Beauty feels his shoe slip off and the stones on the road split his shoeless hoof. Black Beauty stumbles and falls. Reuben falls and is hurt. When the riders come by at midnight, they find that Reuben is dead. Black Beauty is badly injured on his knees. He is brought back to the stable and is treated. However it takes a long time for him to heal and he ends up with scars on his knees. This is the turning point in Black Beautys life. Beauty is put up for sale after he is healed. Black Beauty cannot work as a carriage horse and is put up for sale. He becomes a job horse and is rented to different people. Some do not know how to ride him well and some mistreat him. He is also up for sale for a few times. Reubens negligence has caused Black Beauty to endure sufferings.

Sample Question 2:

Write about a character that you find most interesting. Support your answer with evidence from the novel.

The character in the Boscombe Valley Mystery I find the most interesting is definitely Dr. Watson. He is a loyal companion of detective Sherlock Holmes. He agreed to help Sherlock Holmes although he had a lot of patients to see. He is also very punctual. Although he had only half an hour to get ready, he was at the station on time. Apart from that he is very observant. He notices some unusual footprints at the pool. Watsons notes about the injury the murder victim had sustained which is a blow to the left side of the head actually prompted Holmes to realise that the killer was left-handed, which allowed him to narrow the list of suspects. He is also a concerned man. He asks Alice about her fathers condition. He is also helpful. He brings the pen and paper for John turner to write the confession.

Sample Question 3:

Write about a moral value you have learnt in the story. Support your answer with evidence from the novel.

The moral value that I have learnt from the novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth is never to give up. I admire Professor Otto Lidenbrock, Axel, and Hans who went to Sneffels where they were let down by cloudy skies. But on the last day the sun comes out and they enter the correct crater. Once in they face many mishaps like being in a chamber filled with combustible gas and face several prehistoric creatures. After the journey they return to Hamburg to great acclaimProfessor Lidenbrock is hailed as one of the greatest scientists of history.

Reviewing the short Story Flipping Fantastic

SYNOPSIS:

Flipping Fantastic is a story presented in the form of diary or journal entries. It conveys the thoughts of twin brothers, Tristan and James and their mother. The twin boys have always been together and for the first time they have to go to two different schools. Tristan who is a disabled, wheel-chair bound boy will be going to Chesterlea Grange, a residential school for special children. His brother James will be going to Highfields, a normal secondary school. Since James and Tristan have always been together, both James and their mother are worried about Tristans well being in the new school. Tristan on the other hand was experiencing mixed feelings about leaving the familiar Peter Hill Primary and starting at Chesterlea Grange. In the end, both Tristan and James decide that they would make it on their own if they set their mind to it.

James

I am so relieved! Tristan has just told Mum that he doesnt want to go to Chesterlea after all. That means he will be coming to Highfields with me. Thank goodness for that! SECTION C

Questions 27 32 are based on the following notice.

8 WAYS TO STRETCH YOUR MONEY

1. Take advantage of campus activities.

Student groups and organizations are a good place to start to look for a list of upcoming events. You might be surprised to find out how much you can save on the weekend by going to a few free things every once in a while.

2. Use student discounts.

This could be a cheaper ticket to the movies, a free drink with your meal or even a percentage off your purchase at your favorite retail clothing store.

3. Buy used.

You can also buy used products when it comes to books and other class requirements. And then at the end of the year, you can sell your books and furniture before leaving campus to make some extra cash.

4. Host group events.

Often times, buying and cooking for one can be tricky. Buying for a group can actually be more costeffective (food isnt going to waste) and cooking is easier (since most recipes are written for more than one serving). Rotate who cooks and who hosts, but every time divide the grocery bill amongst everyone that comes

5. Look for other alternatives.

Pack a lunch or a snack rather than going out to eat in between classes.

6. Watch sales.

Keep an eye out for sales on items you purchase regularly. Paying a sale price for the things you use on a daily basis will save you money in the long run.

7. Walk, bike, carpool, or ride the bus.

A monthly or semester bus pass could save you money on gas for those trips that are too far for your bike. If you have no alternative to driving yourself to class, find neighbours or classmates that want to carpool. Youll all save money on petrol and parking!

8. Cut back on utilities.

Try using natural light during the day and turning off all unnecessary lights. Taking timed showers and only doing full loads of laundry (whenever possible) can save money on the water bill. On top of saving money, you are also being more environmentally-friendly!

These eight ideas can help minimize a few of the most common financial burdens as a college student. This way, you can spend your time worrying about more important things.

27.

Why is car-pooling advisable?

A.

It reduces expenses*

B.

It reduces travelling

C.

Easier to for holidays

D.

Chance to get together.

28.

When we buy used books, it is advised here that we could also

A. throw them away

B. sell them and earn cash

C. give them away

D. keep them for reference

29.

Budget-conscious consumers should do all the following except

A. cook your own food

B. cut down on utilities

C. go for vacation abroad*

Section C : Summary

Read the passage and complete the following task.

By definition, open burning occurs when you burn anything outside. Depending on the circumstances, open burning may or may not be a violation.

Open burning produces smoke, which is made up of fine particles. When inhaled, fine particles can accumulate in the respiratory system causing various respiratory problems including persistent coughs, wheezing and physical discomfort.

Additionally, breathing these fine particles can increase susceptibility to respiratory infections and can aggravate existing respiratory diseases such as asthma and chronic bronchitis. Even short-term exposure to smoke can cause respiratory problems.

In the environment, chemicals contained in smoke, when mixed with rainwater, can speed in the deterioration of man-made materials such as concrete, metal products and paint.

Open Burning, even in the confines of a barrel, can easily get out of hand. The smoke is not the only thing that can cause damage to human and environmental health, when the flames get out of control nothing is safe.

Backyard burning is also frequently the cause of residential, brush, and forest fires, particularly during drought conditions. In some states up to 35 percent of wildfires were started by uncontrolled burning of garbage, brush, and grass. Often, fire hazards are caused by burn piles or barrels left unattended, which grow too large or are not fully extinguished.

What Happens to Bullies?

In the end, most bullies wind up in trouble. If they keep acting mean and hurtful, sooner or later they may have only a few friends left usually other kids who are just like them. The power they wanted slips away fast. Other kids move on and leave bullies behind.

Luis lived in fear of Brian every day he would give his lunch money to Brian but he still beat him up. He said that if Luis ever told anyone he would beat him up in front of all the other kids in his class. Luis even cried one day and another girl told everyone that he was a baby and had been crying. Luis was embarrassed and felt so bad about himself and about school. Finally, Brian got caught threatening Luis and they were both sent to the school counselor. Brian got in a lot of trouble at home. Over time, Brian learned how to make friends and ask his parents for lunch money. Luis never wanted to be friends with Brian but he did learn to act strong and more confident around him.

Some kids who bully blame others. But every kid has a choice about how to act. Some kids who bully realize that they dont get the respect they want by threatening others. They may have thought that bullying would make them popular, but they soon find out that other kids just think of them as troublemaking losers.

The good news is that kids who are bullies can learn to change their behavior. Teachers, counselors, and parents can help. So can watching kids who treat others fairly and with respect. Bullies can change if they learn to use their power in positive ways. In the end, whether bullies decide to change their ways is up to them. Some bullies turn into great kids. Some bullies never learn.

But no one needs to put up with a bullys behavior. If you or someone you know is bothered by a bully, talk to someone you trust. Everyone has the right to feel safe, and being bullied makes people feel unsafe. Tell someone about it and keep telling until something is done.

I took part in a gotong-royong at my school recently. Our parents were also roped in the project. Led by the schools senior assistant, Pn Jamiah, and Parent-Teacher Association head En Alias, many of us turned up as early as 7am and swung into action within minutes.

We were divided into groups and briefed on what to do by our teachers. We were then sent to different locations within the school premises with one aim to clean all the rubbish. Armed with brooms, dustpans and garbage bags, we went all over the place the schools Hall, the toilets, reflexology garden, the field and classrooms. A lorry from the Municipal Council was also brought in to remove the garbage.

The gotong-royong also helped enhance respect and teamwork among students of different races. State rural development, consumer affairs and public amenities committee chairman, who launched the event, commended us, the students and our parents for sacrificing their day off for the clean-up. He said, It is good to see the parents, teachers and students taking part in the activity. This effort should truly be praised. Such activities also helped strengthen the spirit of camaraderie among the students and their sense of belonging to the school.

We must love our school because it is here that we learn most things in life. We owe this much to our school. Such activities would also enhance the spirit of 1Malaysia as they allowed parents and students to take part in activities for common benefit.

Novel:

. I like the ending in the novel Black beauty. It ends on a happy note for Beauty as he spends the rest of his days in Farmer Thoroughgoods meadows. Here it shows that by being hardworking and responsible, one can achieve success in life. Beauty being an obedient horse reaps the benefits in his old age. The death of Ginger is also a good ending for the novel. Although I feel sad reading the death of Ginger, I empathise with her as there is an end to her suffering. Ginger now no longer needs to suffer at the hands of cruel masters and she finally finds peace in her death. Another ending which I like is when Joe Green recognises Black Beauty in Farmer Thoroughgoods farm and is overjoyed to see Beauty. This portrays the human touch in man and is heart-rending. Beauty is recognised for his good deeds and loyalty to his previous master Squire Gordon and this also shows that good manners come from good upbringing.

ANSWERS:

PRACTICE 1

A soldier

(a)The war fought for independence (b) He has been injured due to his involvement in the war for independence. Now he is old and disabled and cannot do much to free his country from new challenges. He still cares for the country but unable to fight as he used to do.

PRACTICE 2

Nature

The poet questions the purpose of a life which is so full of worry that it does not allow us any time to simply stand still and watch the world go by. We should take the time to recognize the world around us and see whats going on. One day we might have something or someone, and the next their gone. PRACTICE 3

In the Stanzas 1 and 2, the persona enhances the tone of frustration as he shares his disabilities and weariness of not being able to fight for the country anymore.

(a) He is old and disabled (b) He voices out the problem encountered by the younger generation nowadays. He implies how the modern generation deceives each other and how the deceit is being spread day by day and it obviously bothers him.

PRACTICE 4

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

(a) No time (b) The repetition is an indication of mankinds dilemma. We merely go on with our fast paced lives as though nature is nothing special, when in reality it is a magnificent creation like a work of art hanging in a museum.

PRACTICE 5

United population. In order to fight for our freedom, first we have to be united.

(a) younger generation (b) We must defend our independence after the hardships that our late warriors had been through as they sacrificed themselves to grant us the peace that we are able to enjoy now. With all of our efforts, we must work hard to retain it.

PRACTICE 6

Time spent enjoying simple beauties cherished and regarded as a forgotten pastime.

The fever and fret of worldly responsibilities deprives man of sweet moments of leisure and rest. If human life is nothing but painful cares and worries, then it is really poor and miserable. Man should give as much importance to pleasure and peace of mind as to the earning of money to raise his status.

The literature titles studied for poems are: In the Midst of Hardship- Latiff Mohidin and He had Such Quiet Eyes- Bibsy Soenharjo. There are also two short stories to be studied. Synopsis of the poem In the Midst of Hardship:

As the title suggest, this poem is trying to convey the hardship that a family in a village is facing after a big flood. In this poem, the poet tells of the situation of a farmer and his family. They only returned at dawn after being out in the floodwater for a day and night after tirelessly looking for their sons albino buffalo. They are all wet and hurt but they do not show any despair or of losing hope. Although they

have been born into a life of hardship, they have never complained. They spend time together, enjoying each others company. They are grateful for what they still have instead of what is lost. Now, they are in the kitchen and they joke and talk while preparing to relax with a smoke.

Synopsis for the poem He had Such Quiet Eyes:

This is a poem about the love of a man and how deceptive in can actually be. A man with seductive, powerful and alluring eyes sometimes melt the heart of a naive, innocent, foolish young lady, who will eventually give her everything to him, devote herself to satisfy his starving lust. In other words, it is a story of a girl who meets a boy and falls in love with him. The boy makes her believe that he loves her very much. The girl gives her everything to the boy and the girl loses everything. Finally the boy leaves

her. This poem brings out the concept of the power of the eyes and how, since ages and ages ago up till today, men all around the world are still using the same old trick and women, all over the world still fall for it. Young girls should be prepared to face the ugliness of the real world.

Nature by H.D Carberry

We have neither Summer nor Winter

Neither Autumn nor Spring.

We have instead the days

When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields-

Magnificently.

The days when the rain beats like bullet on the roofs

And there is no sound but thee swish of water in the gullies

And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds.

Also there are the days when leaves fade from off guango trees

And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun.

But best of all there are the days when the mango and the logwood blossom

When bushes are full of the sound of bees and the scent of honey,

When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest breath of air,

When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow stars

And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.

In the novel Catch us if you can, there two caravans. The first caravan is a fabulous charming home; a perfect place for a holiday both cosy and content. It is also deserted and is occupied when and if desired. It fulfils immediate needs and nothing more. The second caravan is more a home, one with minimum permanence but its warm colours and homely smells symbolise security and a peaceful domestic setting away from home. It offered security within a family unit and was able to take off at a moments notice to avoid being caught. While being private, it offered Rory and Granda a social setting in which they were most comfortable.

Practice 5

Based on the novel of your choice, discuss the problems faced by a character. How does he/she overcome the problems?

Practice 6

Compare two characters in the novel you have studied. How are they similar?

SUGGESTED ANSWERS-

Practice 1

Through the novel The Curse, gender stereotyping is portrayed through how females should behave.

Practice 2

An interesting character in the novel- The Curse is the old lady.

Practice 3

The value in life that I have learnt in the novel- Catch us if you can is The Importance of Family. Sacrifices for family are honoured and explored, as are the family bonds that survive adversity. Family responsibility in the novel is best displayed by Rorys constant care of his grandfather. Very early in age, Rory has realised that there was only Granda and me to make up a family. Rory does not know any other family love. His father had left them when he was very young. Granda had taken care of him all his life and now, as Granda is getting old and forgetful, and is never quite well, it is his turn to look after him.

Rhythm, its all rhythm. Play it to music in your head.

YOURE DROWNING ME, it complained pathetically, and she swiped at the words with her brush.

HELP!

Another swipe.

PLEASE!

But Lucy showed no mercy. The large bottle was half-empty when she reached the end of the letter in triumph.

Yours faithfully,

George Ross,

She typed, and sat back with a sigh of relief.

Lucy wanted a job. More than anyone, more than anything, she wanted a job. She was tired of being poor. She was fed up with macaroni cheese and baked beans. She was sick of second-hand clothes.

We are jumble sailors on the rough sea of life, her mother would say. Lucy loved her mother, but could not help wishing she would sometimes lose her temper. Shout. Scream. Throw saucepans at the spinning, grinning head of Uncle Bert.

FORM TWO SHORT STORY ONE IS ONE AND ALL ALONE

Practices 1-6 are based on extracts from the short story One Is One And All Alone.

Practice 1

Dear Diary,

I get so lonely, thats my trouble. I am the only child on this space ship. Everyone else is a grown up with things to do. Theyre all busy running the ship or checking their equipment. We will soon land on the planet Trion. Our mission is to find out more about this planet.

Yes, were heading for Trion. Now that might sound exciting, but its not. Its not exciting at all.

When we set out, I used to tick off the days on my calendar. We left Earth on 12 March 2045. So I ticked off March 12, 13,14,15then April, May , June. Then I gave up. We dont reach Trion until mid-January 2047. By then Ill be 13.

Dad does his best, hes always poking his head round my door, grinning at me.

He asks, Hi Trish. Hows things?

Everything all right? How do you fancy meeting me in the diner at 6 oclock for a chocolate milkshake?

I grin back and say, Yum, Yum! But even as I say it his face changes. The grin is still there but the busy look is back in his eyes.

What is Trion? a spaceship a ancient city a planet* a star The expected duration to reach Trion is within 1year 2 years* 15 years 47 years Trishs father is the only grown up in the ship the only child in the ship. always poking fun at Trish a very busy man* Practice 2

After all he is the ships captain.

And I suppose he misses mum as much as I do. Almost as much anyhow. She is on Trion helping set up the space station. Busy Dad, busy Mum.

Which leaves me all alone in front of my VoicePrinter, talking to it, talking and talking. Then I watch it print out what Ive been saying. Its my private diary. It corrects my spelling and punctuation. Its clever. It gives me school lessons, but it also plays game with me. My favourite game is Pop Star, where I can act out being a pop star on VPs enormous screen.

I can switch it from Diary to Dialogue too. I suppose its my best friend, really. Im going to switch from Diary to Dialogue now

The Voiceprinter is able to do all of the following except correct spelling and punctuation errors. read Trishs mind* print whatever Trish says play a game called Pop Star. Who is the captain of the ship? Trish Trishs Dad* Trishs Mum The VoicePrinter

Trishs best friend is her dad her mum her voiceprinter* no one. Practice 3

You mean. Its still done.

Certainly. Why to set up a clone laboratory, all that is required

VP went on and on describing cloning techniques so I decided to press save and listen to it all later. For now I have some serious thinking to do.

Ill tell you what I was thinking. The Biolab in this ship is very big. It has to be, because biology is what this trip is all about- the biology of Trion- what lives there now and what, and who, could live there in the future. At the moment the ships Biolab is deserted. It wont become busy until we reach Trion.

I need to use it.

I need it all to myself.

I will make a clone. It will be my perfect friend and companion. Perfect, because I am going to clone myself. Make another Me.

Trish has decided to visit the BioLab

make a clone of herself* help her father find Trion search for a good friend Why is the BioLab deserted? No one knows how to use it Only Trish knows how to use the Lab The ship has not reached Trion* The BioLab is not perfect. What was the VoicePrinter doing? describing cloning techniques* talking nonsense and irritating Trish playing games with trish printing all that Trish is saying. Practice 4

Dear Diary,

I havent spoken to you for ages because I have been busy with my new friend Clo.

Clo for Clone. Clo is me. I am Clo. We are identical twins. No, even closer than that. Clo is made of me, from me. We are one. Except that there are two of us- which is tricky. I mean, suppose Dad put his head round the door and saw Two Trishes instead of one!

But Ive solved that. My cabin door leads to an identical cabin next door. Clo can vanish through that door in a split second.

The next-door cabin is empty of course. All the cabins are. They wont be filled until the return trip from Trion. So, I sleep here. Clo sleeps there. Clothes, food, toothbrushes?

Well, yes. I now need two of everything- but the ship is loaded with stores. No one notices or cares about an extra toothbrush or an extra towel.

Who is Clo? Trishs friend from Earth Another name given to Trish Identical twin created by Trish* Trishs biological mother. Why are all the cabins used for? to store things from Trion* To hide Clo. To store all the toothbrushes and towels. They are actually bedrooms. Trish does not need to talk to VoicePrinter very often as she now hates it she has a new companion in Clo* she has found her mother is Trion she has found her twin sister. Practice 5

One of the features of this ship is its disposal system. There are five big hatches, each one marked DISPOSAL. You open the hatch, put the thing you want to get rid of into the hole, and whoosh its gone. Disposed of for ever in infinite space. One of the five hatches happen to be outside my cabin, in the corridor. Theres never anyone in the corridor at night.

There you are then. Tonights the night. Ill be disposing of something definitely. I am going to write a note to go with the item. The note will read, Goodbye, Clo. Have a good trip. Yours never, Trish.

Well, it wouldnt be murder, would it? How could it be? You cant be charged with murdering yourself, can you? You couldnt even be charged with suicide because there will still be one person left and that person will be alive- walking and talking, eating and sleeping.

So, its foolproof. Goodbye, Clo. Yours never Trish.

What is Trish planning? She wants to dispose Clo* She wants to dispose garbage She wants to kill herself She wants to tell her family the truth. The phrase one person refers to Trishs Dad Trishs Mum Clo Trish herself.* The words on the note, Yours never implies that Trish Loves Clo very much Hates Clo* Never wanted a friend Loves to be alone Practice 6

Over and done with. Finished and forgotten.

No, thats not true. Theres no question about forgetting. Just the opposite. Every minute of every hour. I mentally hug myself and give a silent shout. Of Whoopp! Yarroop! Hooray! Finally Free! Alone at last!

Even dad noticed a change in me. Youre looking wonderful today, he said.

Suddenly youre bright as a button.

I feel terrific! I said. Can I have a chocolate milkshake?

Have as many as you like.

Just one. I said. Only one. Ones enough isnt it? Who needs two? Theres only one Me. No longer do I have to remind another me to wipe chocolate from its greedy mouth. No longer do I have to listen to that other Mes corny Yum,yum! Noises whenever chocolate milkshakes are mentioned. From now on, theres only one me.

You have no idea how wonderful it feels, how bright the future looks.

Dad shows surprise at his daughters good mood because usually Trish hates chocolate milkshake Trish is usually moody* She likes to talk to the Voice Printer Trish is always hot tempered. What has happened to Clo? She is now dead

She is living the life of Trish* She is sleeping She left because she was unhappy. Clos feelings can be described as extremely happy* very sad disappointed very confused
