SPOON

Stanford Project On Hunger

Dear Kitchen Manager, Hello! First of all, THANKS for helping to coordinate food collection from your house this year. Although, your donations may seem small and difficult to put to use 5 pieces of teriyaki here, 8 pieces of BBQ there, and 3 pounds of mixed vegetables they really go a long way towards feeding hungry people in the local area. Everything you donate will be re-invented to make meals at Urban Ministries of Palo Alto. Stanford is the largest single consumer of food on the peninsula, and despite the hard effort of University cooking facilities to conserve food, there is inevitably some waste. Since 1987, SPOON has collected unused food from campus residences and dining halls food that otherwise would have been thrown away for distribution to local soup kitchens. Currently, over 12,000 pounds of food are donated every year through SPOON. Weve put together this packet to help you get SPOON started in your house. You will be provided with:

1. A starter pack of big and small metal trays w/ lids.

these trays are only used for SPOON!

Please monitor that

2. A starter pack of heavy plastic bags, twist ties, and labels.

For safety reasons, these are to be used for dry/precooled foods ONLY! ** When you run out of supplies, you can get more from the freezer sheds behind the Haas center or contact tmai@stanford.edu. 3. Several sheets of stickers which you and/or your chef can use to mark food for donation. 4. The freezer lock combinations: for both locks the combination number is 10-31-3. Please contact us if the supplies in the freezer sheds are running low or if you need to arrange a pickup. We also have some ideas to make your job easier: 1. How to work with your chef (if you have one): We understand that each chef has his or her own habits and preferences for keeping and reusing leftover food. In this packet, youll find several sheets of small, brightly colored stickers. Ask your chef to use these stickers to label food for donation. The stickers should adhere easily to saran wrap, foil, and plastic bags. A letter addressed to the chef can be found at hunger.stanford.edu 2. How to make SPOONing part of the normal hashing process: Organizing and cleaning out the fridges is a routine part of weekend and/or breakfast hashes. Have weekend and/or breakfast hashers bag and label

food items that have been stickered by you or the chef. Or create a separate SPOON hasher who does it once or two times a week. The bags should then be stored in the freezer in a space you designate. Hashing instructions are included at the end of this letter (and would be useful to post in the kitchen). 3. How to get food to the SPOON freezers: Once or twice a week, the bagged food from your house should be dropped off at one of the SPOON freezers, either in the shed behind Haas or in the Bridge. Each delivery should also be entered into our logbook (there is a scale and book at each freezer). It might be simplest to find a volunteer with a car; however, you can very easily work drop-offs into other routine tasks i.e. if you make regular Costco runs, drop off the food for SPOON on your way off campus; if your house orders take-out once a week that must be picked up, have the drivers who pick up your order drop off SPOON bags; if the RA or Social Manager buys snacks for house meeting, they can also stop at the SPOON freezers on their way to Safeway, etc. Please introduce the mission of SPOON and SPOONing procedures to your house at house meeting, through email, or by giving a short spiel during a meal whatever will reach the most people! Donations to SPOON consist primarily of leftovers; however, there may be times, such as at the end of the quarter, when your house may want to donate unprepared food. Such foods might include fresh fruits and vegetables, uncooked meats, dairy products, and eggs. Donations of dry goods such as flour and uncooked rice are also welcome. If your house would like to make a donation of any of these non-freezable foods please contact me. Thanks again for your help! Have a great day. If you have any questions or suggestions, dont hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Anne Mai (714) 478-8119 The freezer at Haas is located near the back patio across the parking lot from 557. Please email Anne if you any questions or concerns.

How To SPOON
Instructions for Hashers
Your chef and/or KM will label food for donation with stickers 1. Throw away any stickered food that cannot be frozen. The soup kitchen will not accept fresh fruits or vegetables, breads, or potatoes. 2. Place stickered food on special SPOON metal trays. Use plastic bags only for dry/precooled goods that cannot pose a safety risk. Double bag liquids like soups and sauces. 3. Secure with lids or tie bags tightly with twisties. 4. Use a tag to label each tray/bag. Write down the name of your house, the date, and what the food item is. 5. Store the bags in the freezer space designated by your chef or KM.

To drop off food: Once or twice a week, take bagged leftovers to the freezer in the shed behind Haas. The freezer shed at Haas is next to the back patio across the parking lot from 557. Ask your KM for the lock combination. When you drop off food, please weigh each bag, write the weight on the tag, and enter the total weight of donated
