Tiling of balconies

Case
Balcony design
Balconies should be designed with a certain slope to allow drainage. Water should not be allowed to pool or stagnate. The structure must be strong enough to support the expected load including tiles, adhesive, grouts and a screed if needed without undue movement. In exterior applications such as balconies, the thermal and mechanical stresses are much higher than in interior applications.

Exposed to weathering conditions

Screed or adhesive that is constantly saturated with water will freeze and expand causing it to break up. There are other causes of deformation and stresses, such as temperature changes, creep and deection which act in conjunction rather than isolation. Direct sunlight onto tiles will cause them to warm up and expand causing stresses between the tile adhesive and screed.

Thermal movements
Dark colored tiles absorb more heat than light colored tiles and therefore experience greater thermal movement. Large size tiles create more stress than smaller ones.

Solutions
Substrate preparation
The substrate must be sound, clean and able to bear weight, free from dust, dirt, grease oil or any contaminating material before tiling to prevent adhesion failure. If the substrate is very porous, the temperature is high or the relative humidity is low, it is advisable to dampen the surface without leaving any standing water before starting application.

Method of application
Fixing tiles Polymer-modied adhesives and grouts offer better adhesion strength and reduced porosity. Therefore, they offer greater resistance to frost and thermally induced movements. Mix the tile adhesive with the correct amount of water, spread the adhesive onto the substrate with the help of a notched trowel. Apply the tiles and press them rmly, ensuring a good adhesion between the tiles and the substrate. For larger tiles bigger than 900 cm, it is recommended to use the back buttering method in order to ensure a better adhesion with the substrate.

Tiling of balconies
For Balconies the recommended products are: Carrocolle PLUS Carrocolle BOND - Carroex Grouting It is recommended to have a minimum joint width of 2 mm around the tiles. Grouting should be done at least after 24 hours of xing tiles, using Carrojoint products. Mix Carrojoint with the appropriate amount of water and apply it with a rubber trowel in a diagonal direction to completely ll the joint. Remove excess material from the surface with a damp sponge. When the grout is dry, clean it with a dry cloth.

Important Note
The existing design of a balcony should be of a rigid concrete construction, with a slope of 1.5 mm/m towards drainage point.
