Americas Involvement in WWII

SS5H6. The students will explain the reasons for Americas involvement in WWII. a. Students will describe Germanys aggression in Europe and Japans aggression in Asia. b. Students will describe major events in the war in both Europe and the Pacific; include Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, D-Day, VE and VJ Days, and the Holocaust. c. Students will discuss President Trumans decision to drop the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. d. Students will identify Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Hirohito, Truman, Mussolini, and Hitler. e. Students will describe the effects of rationing and the changing role of women and African Americans; include Rosie the Riveter and the Tuskegee Airmen. f. Students will explain the U.S. role in the formation of the United Nations. Understandings:

Germany and Japan were working together to try to take over the world. Japan bombed Pearl Harbor which led to the United States involvement in the war. The Holocaust was a result of prejudice against Jews and what went on during this time and in the concentration camps. President Trumans decision to drop the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Hirohito, President Truman, Mussolini, and Hitlers roles during this time. Rosie the Riveter was the symbol of the women in the workforce. The Tuskegee Airmen were an all African American aviation unit that completed heroic missions.

Related Misconceptions: President Franklin D. Roosevelt died in April 1945 and President Truman took over.

FRIT 7430: UbD Stage 3 Assignment Essential Questions: Overarching Questions: Why might other countries be concerned about the rise of dictators in the 1930s? Why might someone try to eliminate an entire religion, like the Jews? How does what happened then help to inform where we are today? Topical Questions: What effects did Japans attack on Pearl Harbor have on WWII? How did the roles of women change during WWII? Why? How might the Tuskegee Airmen have changed the way people viewed African Americans? In what ways are the effects of WWII and this era of our past still with us?

Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences


Week 1 1. Show students pictures of people from the Holocaust and ask the question, What was going on in the world during this time for people to let this happen or for people to be a part of this? H 2. Introduce the overarching essential questions. (Why might someone try to eliminate an entire religion, like the Jews? Why might other countries be concerned about the rise of dictators in the 1930s? How does what happened then help to inform where we are today?) W 3. Give students a pre-test to test their previous knowledge and understanding of the concepts that will be covered during this unit. 4. The students will create a scrapbook on WWII. The scrapbook will be used as a learning tool and a studying tool. Before we begin the unit, students will create a KWL chart in the front of their scrapbooks. The students will fill out what they know about WWII, and what they would like to know about the war. T, O, E 5. Read related text from Social Studies book on WWII, along with a slide show summarizing the information from the text with images of people and places involved. E 6. Students will start a portfolio or scrapbook of people and events involved in WWII. The scrapbook will be divided into two parts. One for people and one for events. The students will be shown an exemplar scrapbook to use as a reference, as well as a rubric for grading. W,E 7. The students will start their scrapbooks focusing on the people portion of their scrapbook. The students will create scrapbook pages for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Stalin, Churchill, Hirohito, President Truman, Mussolini, and Hitler. The students will also create a page for the changing role of women and African Americans during this time including Rosie the Riveter and the Tuskegee Airmen. Each page will include a picture of the person, their role during this time period, and why we remember them. E, E-2, R, T, O 8. Students will be working in groups of three to four students to research, but will be making their own scrapbook. The students will be using computers, books, social studies

The students will exchange scrapbooks for peer evaluations based on the rubric provided. The students can make revisions on their scrapbooks based on feedback. R, E-2 Week 2 1. Show the students a clip of the movie Pearl Harbor, where we are being bombed by Japan. Discuss the event of Pearl Harbor and what lead up to the bombing at Pearl Harbor. H 2. Introduce the essential questions (What effects did Japans attack on Pearl Harbor have on WWII? What other events affected the outcome of the WWII?) W 3. Continue to read related text from Social Studies book on WWII, along with a slide show summarizing the information from the text with images of places and events involved. E 4. The students will continue to work in their scrapbooks focusing on the events portion of their scrapbook. The events include Pearl Harbor, Iwo Jima, D-Day, VE and VJ Days, the Holocaust, and atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The page will include pictures of the event (if possible), where the event took place, who was involved in the event, how and why the event was started, what was the result of the event, and any key points of the event. E, T, O, E-2, R 5. Students will be working in groups of three to four students to research, but will be making their own scrapbook. The students will be using computers, books, social studies textbooks, and notes from our slideshows to gain information on these events. E 6. The students will exchange scrapbooks for peer evaluations based on the rubric provided. The students can make revisions on their scrapbooks based on feedback. R, E-2 Week 3 1. I will come into the classroom dressed like Hitler. I will make a speech about my intentions during this time period and why I choose to eliminate Jews from Germany. Then I will show clips of President Trumans speech. H, W 2. The students will create and present a speech to the class based on the role they select. The roles include a woman during WWII, a Tuskegee Airman, President Truman, a solider at Pearl Harbor at the time of the bombing, and a Jew at the Holocaust. In the speech the student will tell who they are, where they live, and what life is like for them during the war. The students will have a rubric to go by for their grading. W, E, E-2, T,O 3. The students will write the speech and exchange their speeches for peer evaluations based on the rubric provided. The students can make revisions on their speeches based on the feedback. R, E-2 4. The students will give their speeches and are allowed to dress as their role. T
