From The Desk of Chairperson

In education, the component of literacy / academic subjects alone --- is harmful or useful or useless/ neutral? In Hind Swaraj, Mahatma Gandhi emphasized upon the need of character in education. He quotes Professor Huxley who has defined education as: That man I think has had a liberal education who has been so trained in youth that his body is the ready servant of his will and does with ease and pleasure all the work that as a mechanism it is capable of; whose intellect is a clear, cold, logic engine with all its parts of equal strength and in smooth working order...whose mind is stored with a knowledge of the fundamental truths of nature . . . whose passions are trained to come to heel by a vigorous will, the servant of a tender conscience . who has learnt Prof. B. K. Passi to hate all vileness and to respect others as himself. Such a one and no other, I conceive, has had a liberal education, for he is in harmony with nature. From the above definition we can infer that character development is the most important core components of education; literacy is a mere tool and by itself it is not important. Rather a part game of providing literacy in education is like taking a half-jump over the wide cliff? With this understanding in mind, we must answer the question whether literacy (bookish education) if given alone is useful or harmful or neutral? It is a difficult question. People have given many kinds of answers. Some people generally say that there is no harm in providing such a literacy as learning tools; and second set of people say that providing such kind of learning tools is harmful; particularly when provided without first ensuring about the development of character. They mean to say that 3Rs literacy not even neutral but rather it is harmful. It looks strange a simple mind! If truth is so, then let us look what is happening in the environment? We find that in some of our programs of school education we are not giving enough importance to character development. Inside ordinary schools many a parents are pushing their children and forcing the policies of solo development of learning of academic subjects. Teachers too are pushing their students for the development of book oriented examinations. School employers are promoting their teachers on the basis of pass/fail marks in a 3Rs of their students. We have seen that there is tremendous growth of coaching classes, those coaching classes are meant for the development of 3Rs (not character development classes). Our admissions criteria into higher education have enclosed themselves to academic subjects. The character development either is neglected or subdued or sidetracked? Some others may refute above allegations. We must find the truth in our educational environments. Prof. B. K. Passi Former UNESCO Chair 139 Indrapuri Colony, Indore-452001 INDIA
