27th September, 2012

On Thursday 20th September our MIS Kapa Haka Group (Kia U Ki Te Pai) travelled to Tahuna School to take part in the annual Piako Cultural Festival. This was a special occasion as it was the 10th anniversary of the festival and was hosted by Tahuna School who first came up with the idea to hold a cultural festival in our community 10 years ago. The first school to compete was Tahuna, their performance included Kapa Haka as well as dances from Cook Islands and Ireland which was really fun to watch. This was followed by a Tautoko Haka performed by Morrinsville College. Thirteen schools, kindies and day care centres also performed throughout the day. MIS Kapa Haka performed straight after lunch and we were all buzzing with excitement. It was a special occasion for us as it was the first time performing in our new Piu Piu. We sang eight beautiful songs and performed two Haka; it was great to perform in front of so many people. The last roopu to perform was Morrinsville College and this was a really nice way to finish off an exciting day. Everyone enjoyed a day of cultural entertainment from students of all ages from the Piako area. We would like to thank Whaea Te Wiata, Aunty Tarn, Uncle Ed, Mrs Taylor and Mrs Marshall for making this day possible. Report by Te Kawhi King-Tamihana-Toby.

Kapa Haka - Visits to Kindy

This week Kapa Haka has been lucky enough to be able to share their knowledge with children from Ezekiel Kindy. The Kapa Haka split into 6 groups and visited on different days. Two groups taught a song called Ko Matou. The other four groups showed the children how to do poi. We were all surprised how fast the kindy children learnt the songs and actions and we were glad that we got the opportunity to teach them something new. The best part was seeing all the smiles appearing on their faces while we played with them. Report by Kate Manunui.

Summer Uniform Sandals

All MIS students will be required to wear summer uniform sandals from the start of term four. A reminder that all MIS students (boys and girls) are required to wear traditional, regulation black roman sandals during the summer terms. These roman sandals can be purchased for around $40.00. Please be aware of cheap imitations as they tend to break easily which costs more in the long run. Parents are encouraged to use the upcoming school holidays as an opportunity to make sure all uniform items are in good condition for the last term of the year including skirt lengths. Thank you.

In addition to buying a $4 Bandanna to support Canteen students can also donate a gold coin towards four teachers having their hair shaved off! If we collect over $300 Mr Higgins will lose his hair, over $400 and Mr Palfrey will also lose his hair. If over $600 is raised Mr Casey is losing his hair as well AND Mrs Taylor has very bravely volunteered to have her hair cut off too. Students who make a donation get to watch the teachers get their hair cut off. Plus, the student who donates the most money gets to cut off the teachers hair!!

Inter-Intermediate Table Tennis

After much practice at school and at home the M.I.S. Although it was a very tough tournament, following the school motto, the students competed well and played their best. Both teams were placed 4 th after the games were played for singles and doubles. We would like to thank Chrissie Hamilton and Debbie Hicks for their support of the students and for providing transport and encouragement. Report by: Jack Devane and Sophie Hamilton
