Welcome to the first seminar of the year! For many of you this could be your first seminar ever, while for others it can be one of many that you have attended over the years. I willingly admit that I went to my first seminar solely for the food, which I hope all of you are now happily enjoying. I have since learned that SWE has much more to offer besides some pretty awesome free dinners, and I hope that you all take advantage of the many opportunities we have coming up this year. First off, for those of you who are new, welcome to SWE! This truly is an incredible organization and I am genuinely thrilled to have you here and hope you are as excited as I am for the year ahead. SWE is already in full swing, with several events on the calendar. We will be having our first Alumni Relations event of the year on Saturday at the Big House, where those who sign up will get a chance to go on a tour of the entire facility with SWE alums. We will also have our annual Professional Development Day, a day long series focusing on preparation for the career fair. From elevator speech workshops and resume critiquing, to networking sessions and mock interviews, PDD covers it all. Then Monday and Tuesday we will have our 28th Annual SWE/TBP Career Fair! It is SWEs largest event of the year, and brings nearly 300 companies to campus for a crazy two days of companies taking north campus. I highly encourage all of you to volunteer and attend- you will be a part of the largest north campus event this year and will get a pretty sweet free t-shirt. Lastly, as I dont want this letter to be a reiteration of the announcements, at the end of the month we will be pumpkin picking followed by a SWEventure to paint the rock, a perfect way to dive into fall. If the number of events we have coming up in the next week doesnt give you the idea, you should probably know that SWE has a TON of events! One of the great things about this organizatio is you can pick and choose which events you want to attend. This year you all will have opportunities to go to all sorts of events, from networking sessions with companies and plant tours, to school visits and a male beauty pageant (yeah, its actually a really big deal). Even for you returning SWE members, I can 100% guarantee you that we will have new events for you as well, which I truly hope you all enjoy. In closing, thank you all for coming to our first seminar. No matter the reason you came today (and never be afraid to admit that it was for the food!), I hope to see you all again at future SWE events. Get excited for the year, and hope you all have a SWEet night!

Kindly, Jenna Bertke SWE President 2012-2013

H ELPFUL C AREER F AIR TIPS

1. Make sure you research the companies attending the fair. Researching will help inform your strategy, demonstrate preparedness and ensure that you make a positive first impression. You do not want to spend your time walking up to every table saying, What does your company do? 2. Form your strategy based on those companies you really want to see. Make sure you start with the companies at the top of your list. 3. Recruiters are impressed with students who demonstrate familiarity with their organization, ask intelligent questions and explore fit. Use these guidelines to inform your strategy. 4. Having a well-written resume is critical for any career fair. Ensure that you have a concise and clear objective under the resume header so companies know what kind of opportunities you are looking for. 5. Planning on what to wear to the career fair is essential. We recommend professional attire. For men: Clean dress pants, button-down shirt, tie and suit jacket. For women: Clean dress pants/skirt, blouse and suit jacket. Remember to look polished! 6. When you introduce yourself to a recruiter, you will almost always start with a handshake. Practice your handshake with a friend. A firm (but not painful!) and relaxed shake is best. 7. Preparing and executing your pitch is vital to career fair success. For more information on perfecting your pitch, refer to our Elevator Pitch information. 8. Prepare questions to ask the recruiters. Asking good questions shows genuine interest. 9. When you are at the fair, do not monopolize a companys time. Not only will you frustrate your fellow students, but you will also damage your reputation with the employer. 10. Follow-up with a thank-you note via e-mail to the recruiters you conversed with. Reiterate your enthusiasm for specific positions or general interest in the company.

With the Schlumberger Pumpkin Picking event coming up, we need a perfect solution for those pumpkin insides for when we carve our pumpkins. So be sure to attend the event, have fun and make something yummy to enjoy for the better part of fall.

Ingredients: 3 cups of mashed pumpkin cup of concentrated apple juice cup of sugar 2 tablespoons of maple syrup 2 teaspoons of ground ginger 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon teaspoon of salt teaspoon of ground cloves teaspoon of nutmeg teaspoon of allspice Method: Add all the ingredients to a pot and bring up to a simmer. Cook the mix for about 20 minutes or until everything is nicely incorporated. Taste and adjust spices to your liking. Storage: Freeze the pumpkin butter and it will stay nice for a couple of months. Or, simply store the pumpkin butter in the fridge if you plan to eat your it within two weeks.

Pumpkin butter is perfect to make to utilize the meat of a pumpkin. Its sweet, spicy and so versatile! Spread it on breads or crackers, serve it next to a piece of meat, use it as a filling in cakes or cookies, or spread it on top of a plain cheese cake! Its so tasty as well as easy to make. Of course you could use pumpkin from a can, but why not take advantage of a fresh pumpkin. We have found that smaller pumpkins are much more flavorful, however if you use the meat from a large one you could add some more spices to make up for any lack of flavor

W RITE FOR THE SPECIALIST !

Hello There, Have you ever considered becoming an author? Sharing innovative ideas? Sharing a recipe? Talking about something completely random like the origin of the toaster? Submit an article to the Specialist! Submissions can be original or taken from somewhere else so long as you cite your sources. If you are unsure what to write about or submit, check out the past Specialists online in the archives or email me for ideas! I am open to all forms of creativity and everyones voice should always be heard. The Specialist is published every seminar, so there are many opportunities to be published. One of the best parts is that you can even earn SWE points from your submissions, ranging from .5 to 2 points (with a max of 3), depending on how long your article is. Please submit articles by the Monday night of any seminar week. If you have any questions regarding submissions or the Specialist in general, email Daisy Wang, Publications Officer, at daiswang@umich.edu.

ENGINEERING IN THE WORLD TODAY :

W ATER E NGINEERING

We are all always busy trying to find new ways to create bigger and better things. Sure that new iphone 659 is great and all, but we can always also remember to lend a helping hand to our neighbors and friends all over the world. One of the greatest challenges we can face as engineers and as people is helping to save our world. Since June 2009, Water Engineering has been recognized for its high quality of water, mechanical, civil engineering service and installation of Borehole Pumps, Electrical Pump Protection etc. Water Engineering Africa has extensive knowledge of the water industry and is able to offer equipment and services for the most modern and demanding of water installations. Our engineers and technical staff have 15 years of experience in the water and sewage industry. Water Engineering Africa is confident that a complete service to the water industry can be offered and that our work is carried out to the highest standard. With headquarters in Oshakati, Namibia, Water Engineering Africa provides superior services for managing water systems in the Northern Region of Namibia serving both the domestic and international sector. Water Engineering Africa brings a fresh and innovative approach to water engineering services, acting as liaison between the end user and water provider. Companies like WEA (Water Engineering Africa) are consistently trying out new and innovative ideas to install clean water and sewer systems to underprivileged regions. Consider volunteering or traveling abroad to gain insight into problems such as lack of clean water. The brilliant engineers of SWE can easily take on such a challenge. Be sure to try out Tech Team to bring your ideas to the table because every thought counts and each lending hand is priceless. -www.WEA.com.na

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTE:

Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning. Mahatma Gandhi
