Practice Problem Set 5

1. A three phase, 132kV line has constants A = 0.98/3o and B = 110/75o /phase. The receiving end load is
50MVA at 0.8 lagging power factor, operating at 132kV. Calculate the sending end voltage, current, and power factor, and the total vars absorbed by the line [Hint: This will be the difference of the sending end and receiving end vars.] [166kV, 254A, 0.894 lagging, 2.8Mvar]

2. A three phase line has constants A = 0.856/6.72o, and B = 101/81.46o /phase. Between each phase of the
receiving end and the load, we connect a series capacitor of 50/phase. If the load is delivered at 220kV, 150MW, 0.8 lagging power factor, calculate the sending end voltage. [236kV]

3. A three phase transmission line under test required 180/5o kV, 200/92oA phase-neutral at sending end in order
to maintain 200/0okV per-phase at the open circuited receiving end. Find parameters A-D for the line, and hence the sending end voltage, power, and power factor, required to deliver 200kV/phase, 40MW/phase, unity power factor at the receiving end. [0.9/5o, 248/53.2o, 1/92o m-mho, 0.9/5o. 216kV/phase, 48.5MW/phase, 0.808 leading]

4. The natural loading (or surge impedance loading) for a line is a condition, when the receiving end of a line is
terminated with an impedance strictly equal to Zc. If you combine the relation Vr = Zc.Ir with the line equations, then you will observe that such loading makes the magnitudes V(x) = Vr at any x ! A 50Hz, three phase, overhead transmission line that may be assumed to be lossless, is 100miles in length, and has distributed parameters l = 1.46mH/mile/phase and c = 0.02F/mile/phase. Calculate the natural loading for the line when energised with a 400kV source. A total balanced three phase load of 400kV, 1000MW, 0.95 lagging power factor is supplied at the receiving end, what is the phase angle between the sending and receiving end currents ? [592MW, the sending end current leads by 3.08 o]

5. Estimate the stable power limit for a 132kV three phase line, that has A = 0.98/3o, and B = 110/75o /phase,
when the line is maintained at rated symmetric conditions (that is, both ends maintained at the rated voltage magnitude) [110.4MW]

6. Two lines, connected in parallel between common sending and receiving end buses, have the following
parameters: Parameters A=D B C If the open circuit voltage at the receiving end end bus ? [Hint: Though the receiving end is zero ?] Line 1 Line 2 0.871/2.5o 0.816/4.35o 227.2/72.3o 196/73o 4 o 1.57x10 /91.4 m-mho 1.294x104/92.35o m-mho bus is 132kV, what is the corresponding voltage at the sending open circuited, will the receiving end current on either line be [111.8kV]
