There is something about this community that may or may not be unique, but is defnitely distinctive. This distinctive form of volunteerism is the way we all come together as friends and neighbors to help those of us that are suffering or incapacitated in some way or another. September has been a diffcult month for far too many of our own. We all knew this would happen as we grow older, but when fate knocks on your door, there is nothing more reassuring than a sympathetic friend carrying dinner in their hands, knocking on their seemingly hopeless door. The stories are countless and varied; neighbors voluntarily getting together to clean a home when hospitalization kept the residents away for long periods of time; stocking a friends refrigerator with fresh and easy meals after a terrible accident temporarily left her debilitated and in pain; and sadly, when parents lose their child, everyone seems to come together to offer love, sympathy and support. This article is not meant to make us sad; just the opposite. We all should be proud of our strength and determination to help others in their time of need. In 2010 a Fl or e nc e C i t i z e n Survey was conducted and 92% of those responding asked the Town to start a Recycling Program for all Florence residents. In response to that request the Town staff prepared a detailed Request for Proposal (RFP) that included contracting the curbside collection of both trash and recycling by the private sector. This proposal went out to bid in early summer and the Town received 3 legitimate bids. All of the proposals would reduce the cost that residents currently pay for monthly trash pickup. Since there have been changes to the Town Council in the interim, the Council will again discuss this program before any contract can be negotiated. This discussion will take place at the Town Council meeting on October 1, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. at the Florence Town Hall. Curbside collection of recycling materials is very common in many communities throughout the USA and Canada. The Recycling Committee at Anthem supports this action to gain greater resident participation with more materials being recycled. > read more on the Recycling Committee efforts at www.oursuncityamr.net!
