A new element called Dikomium (symbol Dk) being isolated. It is a reactive poisonous gas at room temperature. It is slightly soluble in water forming an acidic solution. Dikonium reacts violently with sodium to form a white solid. Dikonium is a poor conductor of heat and electricity.

SECTION C (15 marks) Answer ALL the questions. Write your answers on the spaces provided on this question paper. C1 Acids by nature are corrosive substances. They also possess many other physical and chemical properties. (a) Name two other physical properties of acids. 1) Acids taste sour. 2) Acids turn blue litmus paper red. [2]

(b) State the name of the gas produced and how do you detect the presence of the gas when the following substances react with acids: (i) Zinc Hydrogen gas. The presence of hydrogen gas extinguishes a lighted splint with a pop sound. [4]

(ii) Calcium carbonate Carbon dioxide gas. The presence of carbon dioxide gas will form a white ppt when bubbled into limewater. It wil turn lime water chalky. (c) When an acid reacts with a base, what would you expect to feel when you touch the test tube with both substances added inside? The test tube will feel warm/hot due to the reaction. C2 An atom of oxygen contains 8 electrons. It can form both ionic and covalent bonds depending on the atoms of the elements that it bonds with. (a) Draw a diagram to show how the electrons in an oxygen atom are arranged. [1] [1]

(c) Oxygen can also react with magnesium to form the compound, magnesium oxide. (i) State what type of bonding is present in magnesium oxide. [1]
