Welcome!

This addendum is provided to communicate information not available in printed documentation, and also includes changes since the original release of MacWrite Pro 1.0. You can also find important tips in the MacWrite Pro Users Guide. CHANGES IN MACWRITE PRO VERSION 1.0v4 MacWrite Pro 1.0v4 corrects incompatibilities in previous versions of MacWrite Pro 1.0, and includes these changes: 1. Addition of the ClarisWorks 1.0 Mac Text Translator. 2. Improved handling of large files containing graphics, which have been heavily edited. 3. Improved handling of files with graphics in the header. 4. Compatibility with the MacODA XTND Translator, available from Apple Computer, Inc. 5. Improved compatibility when printing EPS graphics under non-US System Software. 6. Improved printing to QuickDraw printers. 7. Better performance when inserting a Table on a Classic running System 6.0. 8. Improved behavior with converted MacWrite II documents when no print driver is selected in the Chooser. In addition, MacWrite Pro 1.0v4 will now open MacWrite Pro documents that may not open correctly using the normal Open command. To use this feature: 1. Hold the Option key down while you select Open from the File menu 2. Select the Text format from the Show: popup menu at the bottom of the Open dialog 3. Select the document you want to open and click the Open button The progress dialog will appear briefly, then your document will open in a new window (note that all formatting and graphics are removed, and there may be extraneous characters interspersed with the text). The text is now available to be copied and pasted into a new document.

Four files have been changed: MacWrite Pro 1.0v4 TableEditor 1.0v2 (ADDit) Claris XTND Bridge 2.0v2 Read Me (these Release Notes, 1.0v4) One new file has been added: ClarisWorks 1.0 Text Translator Please follow the enclosed UpdateMaker Read Me 1.0v4 for updating your files. INSTALLATION NOTES The installation process will leave some temporary files on your hard disk. These files are automatically removed by your Macintosh when you restart the computer. MACWRITE II If you are a MacWrite II user, you can choose to keep your copy of MacWrite II or not. MacWrite Pro will both open and save MacWrite II documents. However, if you have MacWrite II documents that you wish to keep in MacWrite II format, you may find it easier to use MacWrite II for ongoing editing. If you remove MacWrite II, you may also remove the MacWrite II Help and the MacWrite II Hyphenation files from your Claris folder. Note that you cannot double-click on a MacWrite II document and automatically launch MacWrite Pro; you must open those documents from within MacWrite Pro. OVERFLOW ALERT This symbol ( ) indicates that a frame has overflowed. This indicates that there is too much text within the current frame (causing it to "overflow" the frame). An alert will appear the first time you have overflowed a frame; the overflow symbol will be in the lower right corner of the frame. To eliminate the overflow symbol, increase the size of the frame or decrease the amount of text in the frame. NOTE: The overflow alert will appear only once for each time you start MacWrite Pro. The second time a frame is overflowed, there will be no alert, but the overflow box will appear in the bottom right hand corner again. PAGE SETUP MacWrite Pro will rescale frames when you change your Page Setup (for example, Portrait to Landscape or when switching between different printer drivers). Therefore, it is important to create a document using the driver for the printer you intend to print to. Otherwise, when you change drivers, all frames will rescale and it will usually require modification to return the document to its previous look. PRINTING For best results when printing to high resolution printers (300 dpi or greater), make sure that Fractional Character Widths is checked in Preferences. NOTE: Fractional Character Widths overrides Font Substitution in Page Setup. If you are using a non page 2 of 4

LaserWriter font, and want that font to be substituted for a LaserWriter (higher resolution) font, turn off Fractional Character Widths. ENVELOPE SETTINGS The following table shows the correct margin settings for printing envelopes. For DeskWriters, be sure to select Envelope Media in the page set up dialog, and modify the document margins to the values shown in the table. Printer (Driver Version) DeskWriter (3.1) DeskWriter C (2.0) DeskWriter 550C (1.0) StyleWriter (7.1.2) StyleWriter II (1.0) Top Margin 0 .17 .13 .28 .28 Bottom Margin Left Margin .57 .25 .57 .25 .13 .75 .30 .68 .5 .75 Right Margin .25 .25 .31 .84 .75

After setting your document margins, use Text Frames to position your return and mailing addresses (for an example, see the Envelope document in the Samples folder). Personal LaserWriter NT and the LaserJet IIP 1. Choose US Letter paper size and landscape mode in Page Setup. 2. Set the following margins: Top: 6.5 inches Bottom: 0.5 inches Left 4.25 inches (not printing a return address) Right 0.5 inches When printing, select manual feed. Insert the envelope face down, with the top of the envelope facing to the left. You can save this out to a Stationery file so that you can use it as an envelope template. Refer to the MacWrite Pro User's Guide for more information on Stationery files. LaserWriter - Edge Feed 1. Choose Envelope - Edge Feed in Page Setup. The default margin settings will cause the application to return an incorrect margin message when attempting to print. 2. Set the following margins: Top: 4.42 inches Bottom: 0.25 inches Left: 0.43 inches Right: 1.46 inches
