1. What do you understand by the term heat,Explain various modes of heat transfer. 2. Explain the word thermal conductivity of materials with unit. Explain how the thermal conductivity varies with variation in temperature in case of (a)solids, (b)liquids & (c)gases. 3. What do you understand by thermal resistance (Rth). 4. What do you understand by the Analogous System. Compare electrical circuit (analogy) with thermal circuit (analogy). 5. Derive the general differential heat conduction equation in (a)Cartesian (or rectangular) co-ordinates. (b) Cylinderical co-ordinates. (c)Spherical co-ordinates. 6. Derive the heat flow conduction equation in case of (a)plane wall & composite wall (b)cylinder & composite cylinder (c) sphere & composite sphere 7. What do you understand by Overall heat transfer coefficient. Derive the same for a composite system in case of (a)plane wall (b)cylinder & (c) sphere. 8. Calculate the heat transfer (Q) for the block as shown in figure: Where k1= 8 W/mK k2= 6 W/mK k3= 4 W/mK k4=2 W/Mk & k5= k4

10.What do you mean by critical thickness (or critical radius) of insulation? Derive the same {critical thickness (or critical radius)} in case of (a)cylinder & (b) sphere. 11. Derive the heat flow conduction equation in case of cylinder without internal heat generation. 12.A cold storage room has wall made of 220 mm brick on the outside,90mm of plastic foam & finally16 mm of wood on the inside .The outside & inside air temperature are 25 C & -3 C respectively. If the inside & outside heat transfer coefficient are 30W/ m 2 C & 11 W/m 2 C respectively & the thermal conductivity of brick, foam& wood are 0.99, 0.022 & 0.17W/ m C. Determine: a) Rate of heat removal by refrigeration if the total wall area is 85m2. b) Interface temp. of the wall. 13.An exterior wall of a house may be approximated by a 0.1 m layer of common brick (k = 0.7W/m0C) followed by a 0.04 m layer of gypsum plaster (k = 0.48W/m0C). What thickness of loosely packed rock wool insulation (k = 0.065W/m0C) should be added to reduce the heat loss ( or gain) through the wall by 80 %. 14.Determine the rate of heat flow through a spherical boiler wall which is 2 m in dia & 2 cm thick steel (k = 58W/mK) .The outside surface of boiler wall is covered with asbestos (k = 0.116 W/mK) 5mm thick. The temperature of outer surface & the heat of fluid inside are 50 C & 300 C resp. Take inner film resistance as 0.0023 K/W .
