Beaver Chapel Church had
a beautiful fall day to celebrate
their 125th Anniversary Sunday
September 29. After three days
of celebration they closed with a
rededication of the church bell.
The bell was removed from the
bell tower in 1985 when the church
added a pastors study. The bell
was in the garage of the parsonage
until this year when the church
decided to renovate it for their 125
anniversary. Many local businesses
and members of the church helped
with the project. The bell has now
been placed at the corner of the
parsonage yard. The parsonage
is occupied by the present pastor
Rev. Tom Christen and wife. The
church invites anyone who does not
have a home church to join them
on Sunday mornings. Former bell
r8ingers on hand to help with the
celebration and to ring the bell for
old time sake were Mick, Monte
and sister Candy Heiby children of
Gaileen and Marilyn Heiby.

Carter Kanney is the
3 year old son of Dan &
Natalie. This summer he
was diagnosed with Hunter
Syndrome, MPSII. It is a
rare, incurable disease that
primarily affects the way
cells and organs of the body
function. Carter is required to
travel to Dayton Childrens
Hospital one day each week
for enzyme infusions, which
he will need for the rest of
his life.
Dan & Natalie and their
2 boys, Carter & Quinn, live
in Coldwater. Dan is a high
school Chemistry & Biology
teacher at New Bremen, as
well as a volunteer football
coach for Coldwater. Natalie
is the Coldwater High School
guidance counselor and
7th grade girls basketball
coach.
Friends & family want
to help defray all costs
associated with the medical
expenses the Kanneys will
be facing for years to come.
To help raise money and
awareness, a fundraising
event will be held during the
Coldwater vs. Marion Local
football game at Cavalier
Stadium in Coldwater,
on October 12, 2012. All
proceeds will go directly to
the Kanneys.
As part of the fundraising
effort, donations can be
made through pledges based
on that nights football
game. Pledges can be made
for Cadences (songs played
by the Cavalier band),
Cartwheels (performed by
the Cavalier cheerleaders)
or Catches (completions by
the Cavalier football team).
If you choose to make a
pledge, you will be notified
within one week following
the game with the amount of
your donation.
Pledge cards are available
at the following businesses in
Coldwater: Shell, Marathon,
Schwietermans Pharmacy,
Bens, Chief Supermarket
and both Peoples Bank
locations.

Celina Couple Receives Albert Heckler
Award from Cheryl Ann Programs
Louis and Dorothy Hoyng never imagined that theyd be-
come involved with Cheryl Ann Programs.
They were raising three happy, healthy boys in their Celina
home. Louie operated his custom upholstery shop next door,
and Dorothy worked in the high school cafeteria. They were a
typical family.
Then a very atypical thing happened. Their middle son,
Brian, was struck by lightning in 1981 when he was 16. With
that bolt out of the blue, the Hoyngs lives changed forever.
The odds of being struck by lightning are one in 280,000,
but the Hoyngs couldnt afford to spend much time thinking
about their terrible luck. They had a son who needed them
more than he ever had. The first years after Brians accident,
which left him with severe disabilities, were very difficult,
they said, as they searched for someone who could help them
help Brian.
Their school district helped as much as it could. Finally, then-
Superintendent Ralph Stelzer recommended a place the Hoyngs
knew about but had never visited as parents: Cheryl Ann.
Cheryl Ann was the best thing that ever happened to us,
Louie Hoyng said. It gave Brian his life back.
The people of Cheryl Ann helped Brian with his everyday
life. They gave him a place to go and jobs to do. He made new
friends, and enjoyed everything about his experiences there,
up to and including the bus ride out to Mud Pike.
When he would see Sam Morden (his bus aide) he would
just smile, and the people in Adult Day Services really knew
how to make him laugh, Dorothy Hoyng said.
It wasnt long before the Hoyngs were finding ways to re-
pay Cheryl Ann for its help. They were regular volunteers.
Louie Hoyng completed upholstery jobs for the unique
equipment used at Cheryl Ann, and often, said Superintendent
Mike Overman, Louie would forget to send us a bill. He
also served a term on the county MRDD board and was the
board president.
For all that, and for their tireless advocacy on behalf of
their son, the Hoyngs received the Albert Heckler Award at
the staff appreciation banquet in March. The award is given
each year to a Cheryl Ann family that exemplifies service and
advocacy.
The Hoyngs both served as good examples of first-rate
advocates for their son, Overman said. They rarely ever
missed a day spending time with him, and they always spoke
up to be sure his needs were being met. They were really spe-
cial parents for Brian, and really good supporters of our pro-
gram.
Brian Hoyng died in February 2008 at the age of 43. In the
years after the lightning strike he taught his family a lot about
patience, hope, endurance and acceptance. He introduced the
Hoyngs to a world they had only seen from the outsidebut it
was a world where they found welcome and acceptance.
We met some wonderful people during our years at Cheryl
Ann, Dorothy Hoyng said. They worked their hearts out
helping us with Brian.

Stateline Writers Meet
At the April meeting of the Stateline Writers Club, members read
profiles they had written about someone, living or dead or make-
believe, and member Eileen Whitsetts special activity of having mem-
bers combine pictures of particular scenes with a person or people
assigned to them to put into that scene brought interesting results.
Sue Miller and Gretchen Bollenbachers proposal for a special
meeting designed to attract new members was described and approved.
Members will be hosted by the Coldwater Public Library in June for
a reading of their best work.
At the next meeting, which will be on Saturday, May 16, mem-
bers will rehearse for their special program in June.
Stateline club members meet the 3rd Saturday of each month at
10 a.m. at the Celina Mercer County Library. Anyone interested in
coming to a meeting or becoming a member is cordially invited to
attend.
Celina Rotary Dog Park Dedicated
BY: BETTY LOU DENNEY/HALL
Opening day at the Celina Rotary Dog Park received
rave revues from the dogs. As the gates opened for the first
time on Tuesday May 12, dogs of all sizes were seen mak-
ing their way to the park to get a chance to run in over 3
acres of wide open spaces of the chain-linked fenced in
area. Small dogs area is an acre and the large dogs have
over 2 acres. The new park, which is one of newest and
biggest things happening in the State Parks around the coun-
try, was made possible due to the efforts of Deborha Borns,
Rotary Club President. Her friend, Darlene Lynskey, is also
working on getting a State Dog Park in her home town of
St. Marys. The two dog lovers along with many volunteers
worked many hours with the help of the State and Craig
Morton, who is the regional manager of Grand Lake St.
Marys. Together they cleared away debris from the previ-
ously unused land. The Park is located at the end of West
Bank Road
Deb Borns saw her idea come to life with the help of the
Celina Rotary Clubs major donation and businesses as well
as individuals who helped with labor and monetary dona-
tions. The idea came to her after visiting another dog park.
At the dedication ceremony Deb thanked many of the
people who made the park possible. Jeff Larmore, Past
Rotary President and Celina City Council Member spoke
as his 150 pound Newfoundland, Bentley checked out the
park. Jeff is also a large contributor to the park in honor of
the recovery of Bentley after he had been lost for several
days. Craig Morton, Regional Manager of State Park Gand
Lake St. Marys and John Hunter, Assistant Chief of the
Division of Parks and Recreation also spoke at the dedica-
tion ceremony. Deb concluded her speech with some wise
lessons that she has learned from her own dogs. A few of
which were: Never leave home without your leach and
your ID. If you stare at someone long enough, you will get
what you want. Last, if it is not wet and sloppy it is not a
real kiss.
One of the many visitors enjoying running free on dedi-
cation day was a lab /poodle mix owned by Dave Hochstien,
professor at Wright State University. He has other dogs at
home but decided to only bring one at a time. He com-
mented that this was the first time his dog had this much
exercise since he got him a year ago.
There are a few small problems to work out with the
park, such as the water faucet would not shut off and there
was a small hole under the fence in the small dog side of
the park, which of course was found by one of the little
furry visitors on dedication day. These problems will be
easily fixed. Memberships ($10) to Fur Ever Friends are
being sold to help with the upkeep of the park. The use of
the park is free to the public. One of the additions they
would like to have is benches added to the park for the
comfort of the owners.
The green stations placed around the fence for the dog
wastes were given at a discount by Florida based company
named DogiPot. Gary Brown, Assistant Operations Man-
ger, heard about the plans for the park and wanted to help
by giving discounts on the pots. The company has all Oxi-
biodegradable bags inside the pots for your dog waste. Gary
flew in from Florida to be a part of the ribbon cutting and
opening of the park. More of their products can be found
by going to: www.propet.org.
If visiting the park remember to follow the rules that are
posted at the entrance. Common sense is your guide such
as:
Dogs should have their current shots
The park has little dog and big dog sections, keep
dogs in their own spaces.
Dont leave dog unattended
Do not bring a dog that shows aggressive behavior
Keep small children under close supervision
Clean up after your own dog
Never bring a dog to the park that has an illness.
These are just a few precautions to remember. Check
the rules before entering the park and you and your dog
will have a great time The Park is open daylight to dark
everyday.
Deb Borns prepares to cut the ribbon at the Dedication of the Celina Rotary Club Dog Park. Helping to hold the ribbon
is Darlene Lynskey and John Hunter, assistant chief of the Ohios Division of Parks and Recreation. On left is Craig
Morton, Regional Manager of Grand Lake St. Marys. Right: Jeff Larmore and Bentley. Photo by Roy Hall.

White -New Idea an-
nounced that new jobs will
be created in Coldwater
because the White parts
warehouse will be closed
in South Bend, Indiana, and
moved to Coldwater.
How do you think
your boss would feel if
you were to take off the
last few days of your
job each year say around
the 1st of October? And
what if you were making
around $147,000 for that
years work and there was
an important job coming
up that needed all your
attention for the months
that you are taking off?
Does this sound far
fetched to you? Well, it
shouldnt.
you see that is exactly
what Congress has done
these past few days. The
salary of $147,000 per
year is the going rate for
Congressional pay. And
they have the audacity
to completely ignore the
wishes of the vast majority
of their constituents.
Their reason for the
adjournment of Congress
before completing the
year is to be able to go
back Home and get
some serious campaigning
done. you see it is an
election year for most
of those in Congress
and if I were in their
shoes I would be worried
also. They are a little
concerned because most
of them stand a pretty good
chance of not being re-
elected come November
2012. And after the jobs
they have been doing
as representatives of
their local districts this
past year I think they
do have plenty to worry
about. Now lets all get
out and vote and take
a friend along also and
show just how much you
are concerned about the
condition of this nation.
Thats My Opinion.........
Whats yours?
AN ATHLETE
Kelsey Koesters, a junior
at Coldwater High School, is
an athlete. She may have to
stand on her toes to measure
fve foot in height and would
need extra weight to show 100
pounds on the scale. Kelsey is
a member of the bowling team
in the winter, the softball team
in the spring, and the golf team
in the fall. In the discussion
of athletics, some folks, espe-
cially those who have never
tried it, do not rank golf as an
athletic activity the equal of
volleyball, track, or softball.
It may be true golfers are not
seen running and jumping,
but it may be one of the most
diffcult of all sports. In most
games an athlete basically re-
acts to the ball or the move-
ments of the competitor, with
thinking and strategy confned
to practice. Golf may be one
of the most diffcult sports to
play consistently well. The
techniques required in the golf
swing are demanding, but the
problem often is the time the
golfer has to wait and think of
bad things. During a round of
golf, at the high school or PGA
level, there are not timeouts
or substitutions when things
go awry. Kelsey can play
the game of golf. In 2011 she
was the girls MAC Player of
the year as a sophomore. This
year she repeated the feat by
posting the best score in each
of her teams league matches
and the best in the Conference
Tournament, a 78 at the Foxs
Den in Celina. Last years
golf season unfortunately
ended with negative memo-
ries. She qualifed for district
play at Findlay and an oppor-
tunity to advance to the State
Tournament at the Ohio State
Scarlet and Gray course in
Columbus. But as golfers like
to say, Kelsey started leaking
oil, and then the wheels came
off her golf game. She played
her worst round of the year at
probably the worst time. This
year, three days after her frst
place fnish in the Conference
Tournament, she played in the
local sectional and needed a
third place fnish among indi-
vidual qualifers to advance to
another District Tournament.
Her frst nine score was an
uncharacteristically high 45.
The expected cold rain started
on her last nine of play and
scoring conditions got worse.
But she responded with an
excellent 40 and punched
her ticket for district play. I
asked after her round if any
negative memories from last
years tournament were now
dispelled. The young lady
uses words sparingly, and
said, Well see. Kelsey was
introduced to the game when
she was just eight years old. by
her father, Jeff, and grandfa-
ther, George. Both gentlemen
were outstanding athletes and
provided the young lady with
a strong pedigree. When asked
if she liked golf at an early
age, she chose a one word re-
sponse, Frustrating. Perhaps
her competitive nature caused
her to stay with the challenge
and frustration of golf. In the
fall of her freshman year, she
chose it over volleyball which
she played in junior high.
Kelsey displays an instinctive
swing and athletic balance that
has been refned by the Elks
pro, Kirk (Kirby) Stucke, and
Observations..... by John Bruns

Question: With winter just around the corner, what can I do to prepare my pet for
the cold weather?
Answer: Cold weather is tough on pets. To help improve your pets quality of
life over the winter months, here are some tips from various resources for cold weather
preparation:
* Be sure your pet is up-to-date on all their vaccinations. The increased stress of
cold weather lowers the resistance to disease. Your pet needs more than just a rabies
vaccination. For adequate protection in our area, your pet should be vaccinated against
Distemper, Parvovirus, Coronavirus, and Bordetella.
* It is now recommended to give your heartworm preventative year round. The
medication kills certain immature stages of the heartworm during its travel through your
pets bloodstream until it reaches the heart. The heartworms are killed when they reach
the stage of susceptibility to the medication.
* Be sure to have a fecal smear done to ensure your pet is worm free.
* To increase your pets resistance to the effects of cold weather, it is sometimes
recommended to give them vitamin supplements to provide nutritional elements that
often deteriorate once a bag of food is opened. Be sure to ask your veterinarians advice
on what type of vitamin supplements would be best for your pet.
* Be sure to keep antifreeze out of the reach of your pet. It is very sweet tasting
to your pet but also very lethal. If you suspect that your pet has encountered tasting
antifreeze, contact your veterinarian immediately.
* Provide adequate shelter for outdoor pets to seek refuge. Winter is not the time to
BEGIN keeping your pet outdoors all the time. Your pet needs gradual exposure to the
outside so that they develop an adequate coat to protect them. Be sure to give them extra
bedding and blankets to help provide warmth.
* Feed high quality food and be sure there is fresh unfrozen water available at least
twice daily. Avoid metal bowls; porcelain bowls prevent the tongue from being frozen to
it.
* Use pet friendly salt to put on the walks. Rock salt can irritate the paws.
* With dry winter air, your pets coat may develop dandruff. Brush your pet frequently
to help remedy this.
* Cats like to curl up under the car hood because of the warm engine block. Make
sure you always know the location of your cat before starting your engine. Honking your
horn is one way to scare away critters hibernating under the hood.
If you have any question or concerns about preparing your pet for the winter weather,
please consult with your veterinarian. They can give you the best advice because they
are familiar with your pets overall health.

The Great Escape
By Susan Elizabeth Phillips
Reviewed by
Skeet Wolters
Library Assistant

The Great Escape is
fiction at its best, meaning
so unbelievable, and yet so
entertaining. I enjoyed this
book in the audio edition as it
pleasantly past away my hours
exercising and gardening.
Author, Susan Elizabeth
Phillips, created several
memorable characters that
cheered my heart. Lucy Jorik
is the adopted daughter of
the first lady President of our
country and as she prepares
to marry, she leaves her
future husband at the alter and
literally bolts from the church
in a choir robe. Her best friend
encourages her, agreeing that
the intended groom is not
the person for her. The only
reason given through the book
is that he is just too perfect.
Well, turns out she hops on
a motor bike with one of the
guests she remembers seeing
at the rehearsal dinner and after
she bribes him with money, he
bikes her to a cheap
hotel and protects her
from the paparazzi
and media. Panda
is of rough character
and plays the tough
roll to encourage
her top escape him
by returning to her
parents, but she rejects
all of this, and even
enjoys his coarse mannerisms.
After a few days they sleep
together, have a falling out,
and he insists she call her
parents and he makes plans
for her return. Turns out he
is working for the president
as a bodyguard for Lucy. Not
to spoil the story I will leave
some for the booklover to lean
while reading.
Lucy feels affection for
Panda, learns he has a home
in Michigan and she travels
there and turns squatter in his
cottage while he is away. She
meets interesting neighbors,
including a young
teen and beekeeper,
where we learn about
bees, honey making
and how to survive
disaster. The local
residents make her
acquaintance and add
to the story. Panda
returns to his home
and she learns of
his past and why he cannot
make a commitment, etc, etc.
Maybe predictable, but again,
it was very entertaining. Being
a champion of women, I liked
the idea of a first lady president
and that got me hooked right
away. The library has The
Great Escape in regular and
large print along with the audio
version. Happy reading.Skeet

This photograph of the
Liberty Band came from Dick
Schleucker. His grandfather
Charles Weitz Sr. is in the
fifth position of the back row
of the band. Dick and Jackie
Schleucker donated the horn,
which Charles Weitz, Sr. is
hold in the photograph, to
the Mercer County Historical
Society. This horn will be on
exhibit at the Mercer County
Historical Museum, at the
October 28, Military Exhibit,
and at the November 11, Post
Card Exhibit.
The Schleucker family also
donated another photograph,
dated 1935, of the Liberty
League Orchestra. The
Orchestra Members included
August Weitz, Marcella
Weinman, Fred Weitz,
Lawrence Maury, Walter
Maurer, Edward Maurer,
Rudolph Kable and Jacob
Kable. Both photographs will
be on exhibit with Weitzs horn
at the Museum. If you know
the names of the rest of the
Members of the Liberty Band,
please let me know.
September 20, I wrote the
article about the Ku Klux Klan
at the 1923 Dedication of the
current Courthouse. I told
about how Winifred Maurer
remembered standing in front
of the new Courthouse that
day. She saw a man standing
on the old Courthouse Steps,
preaching for KKK. Charlie
Ayers called me this week, and
shared the story his father had
told: When the County build
the new Courthouse in 1923,
the County Commissioners
sold a contract to G. W.
Jackson to raze the 1867
Courthouse building. (Jackson
used the brick and timbers and
windows to erect a building
at the southeast corner of East
Anthony and Cherry Streets.)
At the 1923 Dedication, the
KKK wanted to use the old
Courthouse building for their
public meetings, as they
considered the old Courthouse
to be a public building, The
Sheriff asked the KKK to leave
because the old Courthouse
was no longer a public
building because Gus Jackson,
a private citizen, owned the
building. Ayers is the author
of Memories are made of
This.
Charles Tate called from
Oklahoma, as he is doing
research on the Chickasaw
Indian Tribe. He told me that
he called the Mercer County
Courthouse, and Darlene at
the Clerk of Courts Office
told him to call Joyce Alig.
Tate believes there may be
a connection between the
Chickasaw Tribe at Oklahoma
and the Village of Chickasaws
original name. This spring
an Ohio State Professor was
doing research on early crime
in Mercer County at the
Courthouse, and the Courthouse
Staff told him to Call Joyce
Alig. I am always glad when
the Courthouse recognizes
the importance of the Mercer
County Historical Society.
Clarence Hamrick called
that his old barn went down in
the June 29 storm. The barn
frame was from Captain James
Rileys original Grist Mill at
Willshire. Hamricks son is
planning to make a coffee
table out of the old wood
pulley from that Mill. The
Hamrick barn is in the book
on Mercer Countys Big Barns
in Blackcreek Township. This
month, a television crew from
New york City called about
doing a story about Captain
Riley and the Mercer County
Historical Society.
Thus, this week, the Mercer
County Historical Society had
its 15 minutes of fame, from
the Mercer County Courthouse
at Celina, to Chattanooga,
to Chickasaw, to Oklahoma,
to Ohio State university at
Columbus, to Willshire, and
back to the Mercer County
Historical Museum. And this
does not begin to cover all of
the phone calls which I receive,
from people seeking the history
of Mercer County.

Historical Society President

Congratulations Brad
2011 Finalist & 2012 Winner
of the UNOH Automotive
Troubleshooting contest.
If you are having trouble with your car, come see us at
many attributes required of an
individual to play the game at a high
level. It was just after dawn on the
frst Friday of golf season in early
August, and all the local girls teams
had played in several all-day tourna-
ments the prior week. They certainly
did deserve the opportunity to sleep
in, but the lone player on the prac-
tice area at the Elks was the small
girl golfer from Coldwater. She was
in the bunker practicing, and in the
process getting gritty sand on herself
and making the best better.
Kelsey shot an 80 at the District
Golf Tournament on Monday, plac-
ing her second best of three indi-
vidual qualifers for the State Tour-
nament. She will play at the Ohio
State golf course in Columbus next
Friday and Saturday.

Fall Car Care
Routine Auto
Service Never
More Important
(MS) -- Given the turbu-
lent economic news, consum-
ers are tightening their belts
and cutting back on spending.
Delaying or ignoring routine
automotive service is no ex-
ception, but a bad decision,
according to the experts at the
non-profit National Institute
for Automotive Service Ex-
cellence (ASE).
Car care extends the life
of your vehicle and can pre-
vent minor problems from
growing into much more ex-
pensive issues. Worn brake
pads, if ignored, can escalate
into more costly rotor repairs.
A check-engine light may
signal something as minor as
the need to replace an inex-
pensive oxygen sensor. But if
ignored, costly damage to the
catalytic converter can ensue.
