1.0 INTRODUCTION According to Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, Afterlife means a life that some people believe exist after death. After a person dies, he or she will go to transitory place called Barzakh until the Resurrection Day. There will be punishments and torments of the grave to the non-believers. The Resurrection Day is the day which Allah will bring all the dead to life at the same time for Judgment Day when Angel Israfeel shall blow the horn for the second time. We do not know when is the Judgment Day. Even Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) didnt know when is the Judgement Day going to take place. On the Day of Resurrection, Allah will become the judge. Every person will be confronted with the good deed or evil things that he has done. Every Muslims must believe, without any doubt, in Judgement Day and the physical resurrection when the body will be recreated and the soul will reunited and gathered at Grand Assembly (Field of Mahsyar). The scales, The Mizaan, will be set up on the Judgement Day. Whatever we do in this world, whether it is good or bad, will be precisely recorded and these records will be shown to us the Day of Judgement. The Sirat Bridge, the bridge that crosses above Hellfire and reaches Paradise. The speed of passing the bridge depending on their deeds. Those who deemed to enter Hellfire, will fall off the bridge and go into the Hellfire. After passing the Sirat Bridge, people will go into either Paradise or Hellfire. Allah prepared Paradise for the righteous while Hellfire is for disbeliever and evildoers. Therefore, as a Muslim, we must strongly belief in the in the Last Day or the Day of Judgment. Allahs infinite justice is absolute and perfect. We does not enter Paradise because of our deeds alone, but by Allahs mercy. Allah knows best.

2.0 Barzakh 2.1 Bazarkh literally means Period or Veil, barrier or partition things. 2.2 Barzakh is a period after a persons death until his resurrection on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever dies as a Muslim, obeying Allah, will be in a blessed state and whoever dies as a kafir, disobeying Allah, he or she will be punished. (Shaykh Muhammad bin Soleh al-Munajjid) Questioning in the grave takes place 2.3 Two angels, Munkar and Nakir will come into the grave and ask or interrogate the recently deceased. If a soul fails to respond to their questions, they will subject the soul to the continuous punishment until the Day of Resurrection whereas, if a soul would answer their questions correctly, the soul will get comfort and mercy in the grave. Difference between life in Barzakh and Worldly life 2.4 The life in Barzakh is unseen or ghayb. Therefore, our knowledge about Barzakh is also limited. The rewards or punishments in the Barzakh are different from the Paradise and Hellfire. The reward and the punishment is for the Soul only. 2.5 The Barzakh is only a transitory place, while the Hereafter is for eternity. With the life in the grave, continuing on until the Day of Resurrection, then finally we can enter either Paradise or Hellfire. 2.6 The rewards and punishments we get depending on our deeds and beliefs in this world. After a person dies, there are 3 things will continue to benefit a person even after death, which are charity he had given, beneficial knowledge he left behind and supplications on his behalf by his righteous child. between two

3.0 Waiting in Realm (Barzakh) While in Barzakh, one could expect whether he will receive rewards or punishments in the hereafter. The matter was stated in a hadith narrated by Imam al-Tirmizi, Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him) once said meaning: Verily the grave is the first step in the stages of the Hereafter. If one finds salvation at this stage, the succeeding stages become easy for him. And if he does not find salvation at this stage, what follows this stage is very hard upon him. 3.1 For the true faithful, their lives in the barzakh are filled with pleasures and happiness by the mercy of Allah S.W.T. 3.2 As for the shirks, unbelievers and apostates, the torment and punishment they received in barzakh are indicators of the actual punishment they shall receive on the day of resurrection. 3.3 The reward or punishment of Barzakh is a matter that all of us must believe in as it will increase our faith and submission to Allah S.W.T. Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked us to pray for protection against the torment in the grave from Allah s.w.t. as he had told his companions to practice the following prayer:

Meaning: O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the affliction of the Fire and affliction of the grave.(Muslim) 3.4 We must seek protection from the affliction of the grave, since barzakh is the first stop before resurrection. If while in barzakh, one is blessed with pleasures, it is a sign he shall received reward and happiness in the hereafter. Instead, should the person experience punishment, it is an indication of the hardship the person shall face in the hereafter, as told by Rasulullah (peace and blessings be upon him):

Meaning: Verily the grave is the first step in the stages of the Hereafter. If one finds salvation at this stage, the succeeding stages become easy for him. And if he does not find salvation at this stage, what follows this stage is very hard upon him. (At-Tirmizi) 4

4.0 The Day of Judgement

4.1 Belief in Doomsday or Judgement day is one of the fundamentals and the pillars

of faith. It is the day when everyone is to get recompense and punishment for one's work and has to go to heaven or hell according to one's deeds. This is the reason each and every Prophet warned his people of the Day of Judgement.
4.2 As for the knowledge of the time of Qiyamah (End of the World) , it has not been

given to any angel or Prophet. Nobody besides Allah knows when the final hour is. The Quran states, O Prophet the infidels ask you about the time of Qiyamah. So tell them that its knowledge is with Allah only (Surah Luqman, 31 : 34) However certain events are going to take place prior to the coming of the final hour. These events are known as the Signs of Qiyamah. 5.0 Minor signs before the day of Judgement 1. Consumption of alcohol, 2. Lifting of knowledge 3. Prevalence of ignorance and immorality 4. Signs of this nature. 6.0 Major signs before the day of Judgement Major signs are events of an extraordinary nature prophesied by our Prophet to take place before Qiyamah like all the events mentioned in the following hadith narrated by Hudhaifa Ibn used that the Prophet said, 'The last hour will not arrive till you have seen ten signs: 1. The Mahdi: Abdullah-bin-Masood has reported that the Prophet said, "The world will not pass away before the Arabs are ruled by a man (referring to Mahdi) of my family whose name will be the same as mine." (Abu Daud) 2. Dajjal: The emergence of the Dajjal is the most important sign as his trial and Fitna will be the biggest ever seen on the Face of the earth and even those firm in faith will be shaken. 3. Return of prophet Isa (Jesus): Prophet Jesus will have three main tasks, when he descends on the Earth for the second time: 1) The first and most important will be that he will destroy the Dajjal. 5

2) Protect the Muslims from the barbarous tribes of Yajuj and Majuj by taking them to Mount Tur and then Praying for their (Yajuj and Majuj's) destruction. 3) Reign as a Khalifh according to the Quran and Sunnah and elevate Islam. 4. Ya'juj Ma'juj: Allah says in the Qur'an, "When Ya'juj and Ma'juj are let loose (from their Barrier) and they swiftly swarm from every mound" (Surah Al-Anbiya) 5. Landslides: There three landslides, one in the East, one in the West and one in the Arabian Peninsula. 6. The Smoke: ~Allah says, ''So thou wait for the day when the heaven shall bring a smoke manifest surrounding the people this is a painful Chastisement.'' ( Surah-Dhukan) ~ The smoke will affect both the believers and non-belivers alike remaining for a period of 40 days and night. The believers will be affected a little as if suffering from cold while the smoke will enter the brains of the non-belivers and make them unconscious. 7. Rising of the sun from the west 8. The Beast: Allah says in the Qur'an, "And when the word is fulfilled concerning them. We shall bring forth a Beast of the Earth to speak unto them because mankind had no faith in our revelation." (Surah An-Naml, 27:82) 9. Fire: A Fire would spread from Yemen and drive the people to their place of gathering. (Muslim)

7.0 The Day of Resurrection 7.1 Nearing the end of time, the trumpet (a horn of its kind) will be blown and creation will cease to exist. God, the Almighty, says: And the Trumpet will be blown, and all who are in the heavens and all who are on the earth will swoon away, except him whom God wills. (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:68) 7.2 It will be blown a second blowing, and all creation from the beginning of time till the end of time will be resurrected. God, the Exalted, tells us: And the Trumpet will be blown (i.e. The second blowing) and behold! From the graves they will come out quickly to their Lord. (Surah Yassin, 36:51) 7.3 People will be standing naked, barefooted and uncircumcised. The Prophet

described to us what will happen, he said: You will be gathered, barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised (as God says): As We began the first creation, We shall repeat it. (Surah Anbya 21:104)

8.0 Events after The Resurrection 8.1 The Grand Assembly (Field of Mahsyar) After the resurrection of the all dead, they will gathered at the one place called Field of Mahsyar, a place where the people waiting for their turn to be judge by Allah under a very hot sun. They will stand for a day, which is equal to fifty thousand years, neither eating or drinking. Each person will be judge alone. For those who hide other people disgrace in the world, will be a secret judgement for them. For those who non-believer or a sinner will be exposed their wrong doings in front of other people. The people will be divided into three groups on the day of Resurrection as Allah says in Surah Al-Waqiah; 7. And you (all) will be in three kinds (i.e. separate groups). 8. So those on the Right Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Records in their right hands), Who will be those on the Right Hand? (As a respect for them, because they will enter Paradise). 9. And those on the Left Hand (i.e. those who will be given their Record in their left hands), Who will be those on the Left Hand? (As a disgrace for them, because they will enter Hell). 10. And those foremost [(in Islamic Faith of Monotheism and in performing righteous deeds) in the life of this world on the very first call for to embrace Islam,] will be foremost (in Paradise). 11. These will be those nearest to Allah. Each person will be given the book that contains the record of all his deeds. The believer will be given his book by his right hand whereas the kafirs, munafiks, and non-believers will be given their books by the left hand, and from behind their backs.

8.2 The Scale (Mizaan) The Mizaan or scale is something Allah created for weighing our deeds on the Day of Judgment. It has two sides, one to place the good deeds, the other to place the bad deeds. When the deeds are weighed, there will be three groups of people: 1) Those whose good deeds weighed more than their bad deeds, and will be happy. This group has won and will enter paradise. 2) Those whose bad deeds weighed more than their good deeds, and will be sad. This group has lost, and if they were Muslims they will be punished for some time, and then be cleaned and enter paradise. Those who were not Muslim will be in Hell forever. 3) Those whose bad deeds equalled their good deeds, whose will be in a place between. They will look at those in paradise and then will see those in Hell and ask Allah not to send them to Hell. Than after some time Allah will tell them: Go enter paradise I have forgiven you your sins.

8.3 The Sirat Bridge The Sirat Bridge is the bridge that crosses above Hellfire and reaches Paradise. Its thinner than a hair and shaper than a sword. Altough the term Sirat Bridge hasnt been used in the Al-Quran, but it has been mentioned in hadiths. For example; Nabi Muhammad (PBUH) said : The Sirat Bridge will be set over Hellfire. The first prophet who will cross it his nation will be I. (Sahih Bukhari) All people must across this bridge in order to go into the Paradise. People will cross the bridge according to their deeds. Some cross the bridge as fast as blink of eyes, some will cross in flash of lightening, some will cross if wind, some will cross as a horse speed, some will cross as a camel rider. Besides, some will cross the bridge running, some walking and there will even people crawling. And there will be some people that fall off the bridge and enter the Hellfire. Therefore, Sirat bridge has been said as the reflection of our actions in this world. The more ibadah we do in this world, the more easier for us to cross the bridge. 9

8.4 The Heaven or Paradise Janna (Paradise, Heaven) is called by eight names in the Qur'an: Jannatu al-Khuld, Darul asSalam, Darul al-Qarar, Jannatu al-`Adn, Jannatu al-Ma`wa, Jannatu an-Na`im, `Illiyin, and Jannatu al-Firdaus. Janna is the Arabic word for "garden." They have been translated into English as: paradise, a garden on high, a home that will last, garden of eternity, garden of everlasting bliss, gardens of delight, home of peace, home of the righteous. Descriptions of Paradise in the Qur'an: Surah Al-Baqarah (2:82) : "But those who have faith and work righteousness, they are companions of the Garden: Therein shall they abide (For ever)." Surah Ali Imran (3:133) : "Be quick in the race for forgiveness from your Lord, and for a Garden whose width is that (of the whole) of the heavens and of the earth, prepared for the righteous." Surah Ali Imran (3:185) : "Every soul shall have a taste of death: And only on the Day of Judgment shall you be paid your full recompense. Only he who is saved far from the Fire and admitted to the Garden will have attained the object (of Life): For the life of this world is but goods and chattels of deception." Surah Al-Kahf (18:107) : "As to those who believe and work righteous deeds, they have, for their entertainment, the Gardens of Paradise. Levels of Heaven According to what Ibn Abbas narrates, Heaven is reported to consist of seven levels. 1. Heaven of Naim: And make me one of the inheritors of the Paradise of Delight. (Surah Ash-Shu`ara', 26:85) 2. Heaven of Adn: Their reward with their Lord is 'Adn (Eden) Paradise (Gardens of Eternity), underneath which rivers flow, They will abide therein forever, Allah will be pleased with them, and they with Him. That is for him who fears his Lord. (Surah Al-Bayyina, 98:8) 3. Heaven of Firdaws: "Verily! those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism) and do righteous deeds, shall have the Gardens of Al-Firdaws (the Paradise) for their entertainment. ( Al-Kahf, 18:107)

4. Heaven of Mawa: "For those who believe and do righteous deeds are Gardens of Mawa, for their (good) deeds. (Surah Al-Sajdah, 32:19) 5. Daar as-Salam: But God doth call to the Daar as-Salam (Home of Peace) and He doth guide whom He pleaseth to a way that is straight. (Surah Yunus, 10:25) 6. Dar al-Khuld: "Who has, out of His Bounty, settled us in a Home that will last (Surah Fatir, 35:35) Who is eligible for entry into Paradise? Entry to Paradise is limited to those who believe in God and his messengers, and who have led a good life on earth. In the Qur'an: 1. Surah Al-Baqarah (2:25) : "And give good news [O Muhammad] to those who believe and do good deeds, that they will have gardens [Paradise] in which rivers flow...." 2. Surah An-Nisa (4:57) : "But those who believe and do good deeds, We will admit them to gardens (Paradise) in which rivers flow, lasting in them forever...." 3. Surah Al-Hadid (57:21) : "Race one with another for forgiveness from your Lord and for Paradise, whose width is as the width of the heavens and the earth, which has been prepared for those who believe in God and His messengers....

8.5 The HellFire 1. Definition: Hell-Fire in Islam, described in the Quran as an afterlife of punishment and unhappiness. 2. Wrongdoers and disbelievers will be punished with eternal fire and pain. Jahannam comes from an Arabic word which has several meanings, including "a stern look," "darkness," and "storm cloud." Jahannam, therefore, is a place which is scary, dark, and unfriendly. The Levels of Hell There are variations in the degrees of heat in Hell, and in the levels of punishment which Allah (swt) has prepared for its inhabitants; there is not just one level. Allah says: "Verily the hypocrites will be in the lowest depths [grade] of the Fire" (Surah AnNisa 4:145) 'Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Zayd ibn Aslam said, "The levels of paradise go up and the levels of Hell go down" [Ibn Rajab, at-Takhweef min an-Naar, p.5]. 1) It was reported from some of the Salaf that the sinners amongst the monotheists who enter Hell would be in the first level, (Jahanam) 2) The Jews would be in the second level, (Ladhaa) 3) The Christians in the third level, (Al-Hutamah) 4) The Kafirs in the fourth level, (As-Sa'eer) 5) The Magians in the fifth level, (Saqar) 6) The polytheist Arabs in the sixth level, (al-Jaheem) 7) The hypocrites in the seventh level, (al-Hawiyah)

9.0 Conclusion Based on our observation, too many of us today have forgotten the true facts of life by failing to make preparations to face death and failing to realise that eventually we will all be inhabitants of the grave. We are carried away by the worldly affairs. Why does this happen? It is because our hearts are too fond and busy with worldly affairs to the extent that they have become hard and shielded from the light. Our deeds will be equated, whether they are good or bad, and it is all up to the scale of justice determined by Allah S.W.T. Our actions are observed by two angels - Raqib and Atid. Avoid falling into sins, including throwing slanderous accusations, having bad assumptions and telling lies. Allah knows best.
