Huron River Fest Craft Becoming Fall Tradition

Several hundred anglers will head out into the lake from the Huron River on Saturday, October 6, in search of the wily walleye that inhabit the waters offshore from the lake-front community. FishHuronOhio is sponsoring the 4rd annual Walleye Challenge and the Huron Chamber of Commerce is hosting its 2nd annual Huron River Craft Fest. We have several dozen of the leading artisans from around Ohio who will be offering their wares to the fishermens wives, as well as area residents this Saturday on a bluff above the boat basin, said Chamber president Bruce Miller. Fused glass art, many styles of custom-made jewelry, pottery and many items of Huron memorabilia are just a few of the unique items that will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Gourmet coffee, cider and doughnuts, along with perch sandwiches and hot dogs will be available throughout the day. This fast-growing fishing tourney draws 80 teams of anglers from around the Midwest. Its an awesome sight to see all these boats heading out into the lake as the sun is rising. And shoppers can go down along the river later in the afternoon and watch the weigh-in that will determine which fishermen will share the jackpot of more than $16,000.

Letter to the Editor

Huron School District Budget is Bleeding Huron homeowners, taxpayers, businesses and parents of students, you must take note and action to save our district and the economic viability of the community. Currently the School District is being led by a 3-2 Board into significant deficit spending at a record rate. On September 25, I attended a Huron School Board meeting and watched the Treasurer, Mike Weis, present the sobering FY 2013 Budget. He also went through a list of risks and opportunities. There are two charts in the presentation that tell the whole story. Total 2013 Revenues vs. Expenditures! At FY 2013 year-end, the District is forecast to have a net operating DEFICIT of $2.2 mil. The issue is that revenue is continuing to drop and expenses are increasing at a record pace. Expenditure growth for 2010, 2011 and 2012 has averaged a manageable level of 3.0%. However, expenditure growth for 2013 is projected to be at a record level of 6.4%, topping out at $16.6 mil. Cash balances are dropping from $7.8 mil in 2011 to $5.3 mil in 2013 and continuing down. Huron Schools Members of the Board for Huron Schools appear to be relying on liability insurance to mitigate their highly questionable actions & potential for lawsuits. There are two problems here: first, $5 million may not be enough; second, premiums paid for by the insured are a function of the insureds experience rating. The recent Board performance does not merit a passing grade. The problem areas include the lack of a professional approach in dealing with difficult circumstances; inability to communicate effectively as a board, with each other and with the public; and creating an overall appearance of questionable decision-making having substantial negative financial implications. It is not a report card that makes Huron proud. And the results of this performance include significant financial waste and a fractured administration, faculty and staff, students, and community in general. Our request is that all members of the current Huron Schools Board of Education recommit to the education system for which they have responsibility. This will take conciliation, listening and communicating constructively, and working effectively together to mitigate the potential for further financial damage. Equally important is to focus on rebuilding collective community support for Huron Schools. From concerned former members and presidents of the Board of Huron City Schools./ Sharon Barnes, Joseph R. Bransky, Dr. Richard Dolbeer, Hannah Lendrum, Dominic (Tike) Majoy Huron, OH Letter to the Editor The common thread that runs through all my experiences at libraries is that they have always been a source of learning and help; a central place of information where quality services were offered. Each segment of my life is filled with distinct memories of going to the library. As a child, I remember sitting for story time with my mom and being able to pick out the books that we would be taking home for the week. As an undergraduate student, I spent many hours in the library at John Carroll University, becoming quite acquainted with the staff and the wonderful services of Interlibrary Loan. The library became an even more important part of my daily life during my graduate studies and has subsequently remained an integral part of my adult life. A library is meant to be a community center; open and available for its citizens and offering the latest in technology and materials. With state funding uncertain, it is the responsibility of the community to support an organization that does so much for us. Anne Jones

The bleeding must stop. All school expense categories need to be studied carefully and addressed promptly. Drastic immediate smart cost reduction actions are needed. These should have been implemented early in the year. Instead Board members Sowecke, Hastings-Green and Slocum have only been focused on one thing getting rid of Mr. Fox and in that process continuing to add to the expenditure growth with unnecessary investigative actions and incremental legal expenses. Dont forget that they have also chased away our largest philanthropic supporter, Mr. Nelson from Kalahari. Go to the meetings and listen to the financial discussions. Im not sure these three even know what questions to ask. Fred Fox, along with the taxpayers that supported him, once led this District out of receivership and to solid academic and financial success. I am confident that his demonstrated leadership can get the District through these tough times again. We desperately need Mr. Fox back. Craig T. Bulea

Rev. Rogers Reflections

Rev. Rogers Rules of Parenting, born of almost 40 years of personal and professional experience, in conjunction with wife Joan, of course. Grateful for lessons taught to us by children Andrew and Kathryn, plus countless pastoral counseling sessions amid numerous congregations. Summary version free of charge for you today, not copyrighted (yet). Be their best parent, not their best buddy. Set boundaries, or be pushed off the cliff. Be consistent and on the same page, or be played against one another. Catch them being good, and quickly reward how you want them to grow. Pay attention to everything invest the time, its worth it all and only comes around once. Catch the wave of their interests and provide resources and reinforcement for the pursuits of their hearts. Learn to accept defeat gracefully, and move on. When you know youve made a mistake, apologize its good modeling behavior for their future relationships. Offer forgiveness frequently. Pray without ceasing, and always in every situation and circumstance, show them Christ in you. For after everyone forgets the cause of a fight, it is the feelings and words that linger in the air. But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace for those who make peace. James 3:17-18. Rev. Roger Skelley-Watts Pastor Huron United Methodist Church

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month

October is Dyslexia Awareness Month and it is important to identify this learning difference early in light of the 3rd grade reading guarantee. Dyslexia is a word of Greek origin, dys means problem, and lexia means language, so dyslexia simply means a problem with words. It falls under the umbrella of language disorders and research shows that language comprehension and expression problems in young children are often associated with later reading difficulty. It is a natural biological variation in the wiring of the brain in which language is processed differently, both written and oral, than in the general population. Basically the brain of a dyslexic person is not wired efficiently for language, but they may have strengths in other areas such as math, music, art, problem solving, or in fields that require visual/spatial ability such as design and architecture. Dyslexia is the most common learning disability affecting nearly 1 in 5 people to some degree, and it tends to run in families. Dyslexia is more common than autism, which affects roughly 1 in 88 people, and is also more common than ADD/ADHD, which affects roughly 1 in 14 people. Of those people with ADD/ADHD, nearly half will also be dyslexic. In a typical classroom of 20 students, as many as 5 of those students could be dyslexic. Dyslexia affects nearly 20% of the population, males and females equally, as well as people from different ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. Below is a list of warning signs and a dyslexic child will have at least several of these symptoms. Also, dyslexia tends to run in families, and if a close family member is dyslexic, chances are 50% that a child will be dyslexic as well. Preschool Age: Delayed speech Articulation problems Mispronunciation of words (bisghetti for spaghetti, aminal for animal, continents for consonant) Saying the wrong word or forgetting the word (expressive language) Difficulty rhyming words Difficulty manipulating the sounds of speech (what is the word if the /t/ sound in CAT is changed to an /n/ sound?) Difficulty remembering letter names and their speech sound(s) School Age: Difficulty learning sight words Difficulty spelling words, especially retaining the correct spelling after a test Misreading words Slow and choppy reading Problems with word recall Problems with rote memorization A child with an unidentified learning difference may experience frustration, anxiety, stress, and low self esteem. Research has shown that a childs reading ability at the end of kindergarten is highly predictive of where their skills will be in 3rd grade. A child that is a poor reader in 1st grade will continue to be a poor reader in 3rd grade unless they receive the appropriate intervention. Now that Ohio has passed into law the 3rd grade reading guarantee, it is important to identify the struggling readers so they will not be held back due to their learning difference. For more information, please refer to the International Dyslexia Associations frequently asked questions and fact sheets found under the Information tab at the top of the page at www.interdys.org and www.ldonline.org is also another good source of information. Dyslexia runs in my family and both of my boys are dyslexic so please feel free to contact me by email at literacy.matters.oh@gmail.com.

Sports
Pirates Punish Tigers
The Huron Tigers opened the season with a brutal schedule including the likes of Elyria Catholic and the Clyde Flyers and did well. The offense is loaded led by junior phenom Cody Thompson and a corp of strong receivers. Few foresaw the manner in which Perkins would come to dominate the spectacular Homecoming evening. These statistics tell the story: 25 first downs (19 rushing) to just 10 for Huron, and 218 rushing yards to barely over one hundred. The Pirates controlled the game with their punishing ground attack that ate up yards and the clock. When the Tigers went on the attack, the Perkins defense contained the receivers and kept Thompson in front of them when he was forced to run. In short, they shut down what Huron want counts on most to win...big plays and taking advantage of the oppositions mistakes.

Lady Tigers Diffuse Rockets 3-0

The Huron Tiger Varsity Volleyball squad is another game closer to at least a share of another SBC crown after their victory over the visiting Oak Harbor Rockets. Coach Woods squad simply dominated the evening with a 25-113, 25-11, & 25-9 match. Valuable playing time was given to younger players. Sophomores Hannah Cantrill and Hadley Sterett led the Tiger attack with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Senior Sydney Grendow had 36 assist on the evening, while Sydney Bragg and Grendow anchored the defense with 14 and 10 digs. Right Above: Sydney Grendow feeds Junior Megan McCarthy (9) for one of her six kills. Right Below: Leah Phipps grits her teeth and picks up one of her seven digs. Below: Sydney Grendow guided the Tiger offense with 36 assists in the win.

Zach is a Junior football player at Huron High school. Football Dads, Grandpas, brothers, uncles, etc past and present. Want to get involved with the H-Team and help out with Huron Tiger football?
