Activity Go over homework 1. While I grade their homework, have them do the exploratory activity (exercise 1) on graphing polynomial functions 2. When Im done with grading and theyre done with the activity, discuss the homework . 3. Then move on and discuss the warm-up activity Instruction 1. Discuss the patterns they observed through the warm up. Specifically note the following a. The degree determines the maximum number of turns. A polynomial of degree can have at most turns. b. End behavior discussioni. if the degree is odd and the leading coefficient is positive- it drops left, rises right ii. If the degree is odd and the leading coefficient is negative- it rises left, drops right iii. If the degree is even and the leading coefficient is positive- it rises left, rises right iv. If the degree is even and the leading coefficient is negative- it drops left, drops right. 2. Codify this into the leading coefficient test. Do sketches for each part with them 3. Then say that though this helps us figure out end behavior, its not so helpful in figuring out what goes on in the middle. There are several other tools we can use to sketch a graph. a. Tool 1: Leading coefficient test b. Tool 2: y-intercept c. Tool 3: Find roots through factoring if possible, with the root feature of a calculator if not possible d. Tool 4: Find relative maximums and minimums with calculator. e. Tool 5: Test a point or two if theres still an area youre not sure about. 4. Do the 2 example problems with them ( ) a. b. 5. Roots are VERY powerful and were going to devote the next few days to studying them. a. Go through the quadratic example with them- talk about going backwards from roots to factored form b. Then do the same procedure to find the equations for the examples

Exercise 2: a. What is the relationship between the degree and the number of turns?
b. Consider the functions with even degree vs. the functions with odd degree. What patterns did you observe in the end behavior of the two?
c. Without your calculator, give a guess sketch for what the graph of the function ( ) might look like based on the patterns you noticed above. Then check with a calculator. Guess

Exercise 3: The Leading Coefficient Test is a powerful tool that helps us graph polynomials. Let Leading Coefficient Test be a polynomial function of the form ( ) is odd and then: (3) When is even and then:

(2) When
is odd and
then:
(4) When
is even and

Exercise 4: So to sketch polynomial functions, the leading coefficient test is useful, but it doesnt help us figure out the middle bits. There are other tools that can help you figure out whats going on in the middle. Tools #3 and #4 require graphing calculators. Lets list everything we can think of to help us graph polynomials. a. Tool #1:___________________________________________________________________ b. Tool #2:_____________________________________________________________ c. Tool #3:_____________________________________________________________ Use the space below to list the steps showing how to do this with your calculator.
d. Tool #4:_____________________________________________________________ Use the space below to list the steps showing how to do this with your calculator.

Exercise 6: Roots are VERY powerful and were going to devote the next few days to studying them. First, consider the quadratic ( ) . a. Factor the quadratic above. c. If you knew that a quadratic had zeros of and , go backwards to find the factored form of the quadratic
b. Use the zero product law to determine the zeros of the quadratic.
Exercise 7: We can use this idea to find the equation of a function that has given roots. a. Find a polynomial with the following zeros:
