The Abstract This lab experiment showed how to measure and analyze forces using vectors.

Using three strings with weights, we balanced the ring in the middle of a circular plate using weights. The string with weights produces a force which will cause the ring to move unless it becomes equilibrium, when the forces are equal to 0. If you look at my data, the weights were similar for two vectors and completely different for the other. Why is that? It is because of where the strings were placed. Since two strings were nearly parallel, it means that should have identical weights and since the third angle is perpendicular to the first and second force, much less mass is needed. Introduction The theory of balancing a ring in the middle of a plate is to align the forces so the ring is in equilibrium. Since the angles of the strings are not equal, the vectors forces in return are also not equal so different weights are needed to make equilibrium. Equilibrium is obtained when the ring is not accelerating in any direction and the vector force is at zero. Instructions 1. Form a group of three 2. Use three 30-35 cm strings and tie it to the ring and then attach to the weight hanger (Dont exceed 200g) 3. Place the first string at the 0 degree position, second string at the 90 degree position and the instructor will give you the third angle to place the string. 4. Your group goal is to balance the ring in the middle of the plate by placing weights on the hanger 5. Once you balance the ring in the middle, record the degrees that the strings were placed at, record the weights and see if the string is off 6. Once you record the data, calculate the uncertainty 7. Conclusion The principle we tested in this lab was how to balance three forces into equilibrium. We learned that the forces will not be the same unless the angles are the same, even a small difference will shift the balance of the equilibrium. Depending on where the strings are placed, different weights are needed to balance the forces.
