October 13th and14th Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost Lectionary 28 Holy Communion Now the Feast

INTRODUCTION The rich man who comes to ask Jesus what he should do to inherit eternal life is a good man, sincere in his asking. Mark's gospel is alone in saying that Jesus looked on him and loved him. Out of love, not as judgment, Jesus offers him an open door to life: sell all you own and give it to the poor. Our culture bombards us with the message that we will find life by consuming. Our assemblies counter this message with the invitation to find life by divesting for the sake of the other. CHILDREN are always welcome to our Worship Service. Rainbow bags and a cry room are available. A staffed nursery is also available if needed. An usher will gladly provide you with assistance. As a worship courtesy, we ask that you please turn off or set to vibrate all cellular telephones and pagers during the worship service. We ask that all present today please fill out the Attendance and Communion registration card found in your bulletin and place it in the offering plate so that we may record your presence with us. PRAYER UPON ENTERING THE PEW God of abundance, you have poured out a large measure of earthly blessings: our table is richly furnished, our cup overflows, and we live in safety and security. Teach us to set our hearts on you and not these material blessings. Keep us from becoming captivated by prosperity, and grant us in wisdom to use your blessings to your glory and to the service of humankind; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

THE ORDER OF WORSHIP PRELUDE Vesper Hymn Bortnianski

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. Blessed be the Holy Trinity, Father, +Son, and Holy Spirit, one God, whose name is majestic in all the earth, who rescues and heals in every time of trouble, who does all things well. Amen. Let us come before God, seeking forgiveness and life. You are invited to kneel or be seated as you are able Silence is kept for reflection and self-examination. Steadfast and saving God, have mercy on us. In so many ways we cause or suffer brokenness: envy, ambition, conflict, boasting, hard hearts, lashing tongues, dishonor for the poor. In your compassion, forgive our sins and heal our hurts. Bring forth from us a harvest of righteousness, the fruits of gentleness and peacemaking, the sheaves of wisdom and justice; through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. God the Father sent Jesus, the Son of God, so that you could receive mercy and find grace in your time of need. Continue to pray for one another; care for those who are wandering; and seek the good, that you may live. Hear this word from Christ himself, in the power of the Holy Spirit: God's love is healing balm for your wounds. Your transgressions are forgiven, in the name of the Father, and of the +Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. You are invited to please stand as we sing: GATHERING SONG: Blessing and Honor (ELW 854)

GREETING The grace given to us in Christ Jesus, the power of God who calls us with a holy calling, and the help of the Holy Spirit living in us be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE Kyrie (ELW 157)

HYMN OF PRAISE: Now the Feast and Celebration

11

Therefore because you trample on the poor and take from them levies of grain, you have built houses of hewn stone, but you shall not live in them; you have planted pleasant vineyards, but you shall not drink their wine. 12 For I know how many are your transgressions, and how great are your sins you who afflict the righteous, who take a bribe, and push aside the needy in the gate. 13 Therefore the prudent will keep silent in such a time; for it is an evil time. 14 Seek good and not evil, that you may live; and so the LORD, the God of hosts, will be with you, just as you have said. 15 Hate evil and love good, and establish justice in the gate; it may be that the LORD, the God of hosts, will be gracious to the remnant of Joseph.\ The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. PSALM: Refrain: Psalm 90:1217

PRAYER OF THE DAY Almighty and ever-living God, increase in us your gift of faith, that, forsaking what lies behind and reaching out to what lies ahead, we may follow the way of your commandments and receive the crown of everlasting joy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Please be seated CHILDRENS MESSAGE FIRST READING: Amos 5:67, 1015

Seek the LORD and live, or he will break out against the house of Joseph like fire, and it will devour Bethel, with no one to quench it. 7 Ah, you that turn justice to wormwood, and bring righteousness to the ground! 10 They hate the one who reproves in the gate, and they abhor the one who speaks the truth.

Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13And before him no creature is hidden, but all are naked and laid bare to the eyes of the one to whom we must render an account. 14 Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. 15For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. 16Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. We invite you to please stand

GOSPEL: Mark 10:1731 The holy gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord.
17

As he was setting out on a journey, a man ran up and knelt before him, and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 18 Jesus said to him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. 19You know the commandments: 'You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; You shall not defraud; Honor your father and mother.'" 20He said to him, "Teacher, I have kept all these since my youth." 21Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me." 22When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions. 23 Then Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, "How hard it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!" 24And the disciples were perplexed at these words. But Jesus said to them again, "Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God." 26They were greatly astounded and said to one another, "Then who can be saved?" 27Jesus looked at them and said, "For mortals it is impossible, but not for God; for God all things are possible." 28 Peter began to say to him, "Look, we have left everything and followed you." 29Jesus said, "Truly I tell you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields, for my

sake and for the sake of the good news, 30who will not receive a hundredfold now in this age houses, brothers and sisters, mothers and children, and fields, with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life. 31But many who are first will be last, and the last will be first." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated SERMON Pastor Charles Peterson Please stand as we confess our faith APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, Gods only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Please remain standing CONSECRATION OF ESTIMATES OF GIVING Brothers and sisters in Christ: Today we seek Gods blessing as with thankfulness we prepare and consecrate our estimates of giving to the glory of God for the work of Christ. We read from Malachi: Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing. (Malachi 3:10)

We read in Second Corinthians: Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:7-8) In the Gospel of Luke Jesus said, Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. (Luke 12:32-34) The congregation may remain standing for the hymn HYMN OF THE DAY: We Give Thee but Thine Own (ELW 686) All your works praise you, O Lord. and your faithful servants bless you. Blessed are you, O Lord our God, ruler of the universe. You made the whole earth for your glory; all creation praises you. We lift our voices to join the songs of heaven and earth, of things seen and unseen. You stretched out the heavens like a curtain; you divided the day from the night; you appointed times and seasons for work and rest, for tearing down and building up. You blessed your people through all generations and guided them in life and death: Abraham and Sarah; Moses and Miriam; Isaiah and all the prophets; Mary, mother of our Lord; Peter, James, John, and all the apostles; and all the saints and witnesses in your Church of ages past, in whom your Spirit moved and spoke. Be with us now and bless us as we prepare and consecrate these estimates of giving to your glory and praise. Grant us faith to know your gracious purpose in all things, give us joy in returning to you a portion of what you have given us, and inspire us to build up your kingdom; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Let us complete and collect our estimates of giving. The organist will play as the congregation is seated to complete their estimates of giving. After a few moments the ushers will collect the estimates. Once all estimates have been collected the congregation will be invited to kneel for prayer. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION The congregation is invited to remain kneeling As disciples of Christ Jesus called to love and serve all people, let us pray for the church, those in need, and all of God's creation. Each petition ends with: Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer. Hear our prayers, faithful God, and renew us by your Spirit, that we may joyfully love and serve you and one another, through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. Please stand as we greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ PEACE The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. Please be seated ANNOUNCEMENTS OFFERING We invite you to please stand

OFFERTORY HYMN: As the Grains of Wheat (ELW 465)

OFFERING PRAYER God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

DIALOGUE

EUCHARISTIC PRAYER Holy, mighty, and merciful Lord, heaven and earth are full of your glory Pour out upon us the Spirit of your love, O Lord, and unite the wills of all who share this heavenly food, the body and blood of Jesus Christ, our Lord; to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. LORD'S PRAYER Make us bold, O merciful God, to address you as Abba as we pray: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. FRACTURE AND INVITATION TO COMMUNION

PREFACE by the pastor HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

God gives food to those who hunger. Come, be fed, be healed. Lutherans believe the true body and blood of Christ are really present in the Supper of our Lord under the form of bread and wine and are there distributed and received. All baptized persons are welcomed to Communion when they are visiting this congregation. If you wish to commune, please come forward to receive the body of our Lord Jesus Christ with your hands cupped. If you cannot or do not wish to commune you may come forward with your hands crossed over your chest for a blessing.

LAMB OF GOD Please sing all invocations.

The flowers on the altar are given to the Glory of God. Presented by David Huskey

Ignatius is known to us from his letters, which encouraged Christians to live in love, yet stand firm in true doctrine. Thursday, October 18 Luke, Evangelist Identified as the author of both Luke and Acts, Luke was careful to place the events of Jesus' life in their social and religious contexts. His gospel gives us some of the most beloved parables, as well as the songs of Zechariah, Mary, the angels, and Simeon.
