Applied Numerical Methods Numerical Interpolation, Differentiation and Integration

Assignment #2

Instructions to the students (a) If method is not mentioned, you can choose the appropriate method for obtaining the solution. (b) Mention the formulas whenever necessary and write each and every step CLEARLY. (c) Use plain A4 sheets to answer the questions and mention your roll no, name and assignment details on the cover page. Also use proper margins. (d) Try all the problems on your own and dont copy from others. In case of any doubts, the student can approach the faculty for clarifications/hints. Answer All Questions 1. Stream cross sectional areas (A) are required for a number of tasks in water resources engineering, including flood forecasting and reservoir designing. Unless electronic sounding devices are available to obtain continuous profiles of the channel bottom, the engineer must rely on discrete depth measurements to compute A which is given by , where B is the total channel width (m), H is the depth (m), and y is the distance from the bank (m).

An example of typical stream cross section is shown in the above figure. The data points represent locations where a boat was anchored and depth readings taken. Use two trapezoidal rule applications (h=2 and 4 m) and Simpsons 1/3 rule (h=2 m) to obtain the cross sectional area from the figure data. 2. The work done on an object is equal to the force times the distance moved in the direction of the force. The velocity of an object in the direction of a force is given by 4 0 4 where v is in m/s. Employ a valid combination of 16 4 4 14

Simpsons 1/3 and 3/8 rules (by taking 14 subintervals) to determine the work if a constant force of 200 N is applied for all t. 3. Bessel functions often arise in advanced engineering analysis. Here are some selected values for the Bessel function of first kind: X 1.8 0.5815 2.1 0.5683 2.2 0.5560 2.5 0.4971 2.6 0.4708

Estimate J1(2.0) 4. Find the number of students from the following data who secured marks between 36 and 45: Year 30-40 40-50 50-60 60-70 70-80 Population in 35 48 70 40 22 Thousands 5. If p, q, r, s be the successive entries corresponding to equidistance arguments in a table, show that when third difference are taken into account, the entry corresponding to the argument half way between arguments of q and r is A
B

, where A is the arithmetic

mean of q and r and B is the arithmetic mean of 3q-2p-s and 3r-2s-p. 6. The following graph shows that the approximated polynomial of the actual function with the set of observations. Questions: (i) Prepare a table with and values for the chosen observations (ii) Mention the suitable method(s) to evaluate 0.12 , 0.01 , 0.1666 and 0.1666 (iii)Find the values 0.12 , 0.01 , 0.1666 , 0.1666 by the chosen methods (iv) Find 0.8 and 0.9 .

7. By means of Lagranges formula, prove that (i) 0.3 0.2 (ii) 8. Show that (i) (ii) (iii) 1
