28TH Sunday of Ordinary Time VATICAN II AT 50: INSPIRED AWAKENING

October 14, 2012

Last Wednesday, we welcomed 40 participants to the first of our five-part adult education series on the reforms of the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and their significance for the life of the Church today. In his opening speech to the Council on October 11, 1962, Pope John XXIII reminded the church that although the substance of the ancient doctrine of the deposit of faith is one thing, the way in which it is presented is another. In so doing, he gave them permission to explore new and creative ways to communicate the Catholic faith in all its beauty and power. Two words came to describe this task: aggiornamento (updating) and ressourcement (return to sources). This meant that the Councils necessary reforms would be rooted in the wellsprings of Scripture and the witness of the early Church. Liturgy: This first area of Church life addressed at the Council was the one in which the reforms were most immediately and universally experienced. It is the wish of the Church that all the faithful should be led to a full, conscious, and active participation in the liturgy. All the reforms that followed in the Mass the use of modern languages, renewed focus on the Scriptures and homily, communion in the hand, sharing the Eucharistic cup, restoration of the prayers of the faithful and the sign of peace, emergence of new musical forms and cultural expressions reflect this fundamental thrust. Laity: Implicit in the liturgical reforms was the emergence of a renewed identity and mission of the laity. Moving beyond a passive, pay, pray, and obey model, Vatican II affirmed the secular character of the lay vocation to bear witness to Christ in the world, while stressing a healthy interdependence in which all the baptized lay, ordained, and consecrated share equally in dignity, holiness, discipleship, and responsibility for the Church. Ecumenism: In his announcing the Council at the end of the week of Prayer for Christian Unity in 1959, Pope John laid the foundation for Vatican IIs view of Orthodox, Anglican, and Protestant believers no longer as schismatics and heretics to be condemned and converted, but as separated brethren with whom we can and must enter into fruitful dialogue, so as to seek the path of reconciliation and unity together. Humble dialogue became the hallmark of a new way of being church: within the Catholic Church, with other Christian churches, with Judaism and Islam, with the great world religions, with nonbelievers, and with the secular world as a whole.
