Counselors Corner...
In preparation for an upcoming mission trip, my husband and I have spent most of today taking a course on protection of children. Although I was already aware of many of the statements and statistics, I was impressed once more with the sad truth that sexual abuse of children is appallingly widespread in our country. We read that one in four girls and one in six boys are molested before their eighteenth birthday. Probably the rate is higher than that, because so many cases are never reported. Even sadder is the fact that most of this mistreatment is done by friends or family members, someone the child knows and should be able to trust. Abuse occurs at every level of society and in every institution which serves children --- schools, extra-curricular activities, churches. The course included interviews with adults who had spent years dealing with the effects of childhood abuse. They were all survivors, over-comers who were telling their stories in order to make the rest of us more aware of this too-often taboo subject. For years they had used alcohol, drugs, food, sex, or other methods to medicate their shame. Some had tried to tell, but they were not believed, or were told not to speak of it. Finally they found someone who would listen, believe, not judge and would help them on a path to healing. As I read the course material and heard the narrations, I became even more keenly aware than ever that all of us who are parents, grandparents, other family members, teachers, coaches --- all of us who deal with children in any way --- must heighten our vigilance, be more alert and more proactive in being sure the young ones are safe. We need to teach them about their bodies and about boundaries, about when and how to say no. We need to watch for signs that something may not be right. We must ask straightforward questions and listen carefully to the answers. One of the simplest strategies is to limit unsupervised one child/one adult interactions. We need to be sure that every institution where children are involved has in place a child protection policy, a channel for reporting suspicious behavior, and regular in-house training of all staff. We are responsible for the welfare of the children in our families and our communities. Remember that Jesus said, But whoever causes one of these little ones who
