he debates have begun,

the TV commercials are
in our faces, the media is
in its glory increasing ad revenue
after a lackluster year, the nation
is polarized and the people are
tuned-in, eager to see what hap-
pens!
What does this all mean to
you, a resident of North Jersey,
looking to grow and maintain
your net-worth and portfolio; to
preserve your standard of living
while increasing the quality of
life for yourself, your spouse and
your children? Can the election
of the President really influence
any of these factors? Does he or
will he affect the tone of the
Nation and the people who live
here? Does the winner have the
influence to really effect change?
Can the President motivate and
manipulate Congress to make
effective improvements that will
have both a short term and long-
term positive effect on your
finances and bottom line? Does
it really make a difference who
the victor is?
The answer to these ques-
tions in this authors opinion is a
resounding YES. All we need to
do is look back at the
Presidencies of Republican
Ronald Reagan and Democrat
Bill Clinton who left an indelible
impression. The country pros-
pered under their leadership and
these facts are undeniable. These
two leaders had a divergently dif-
ferent approach to governing and
leading, yet, both were successful
in their own right. In both cases,
their actions affected the peo-
ple long after their terms
expired, in some cases to this very
day. As an individual and a voter,
whether you voted for these men
or not there are some questions
you should ask yourself. Were you
proud of the job they performed
and the legacy they left behind?
Were you proud to be an
American while they held the
highest office in the land? Did
you personally prosper as a result
of their actions and choices? Did
the job market at the time bene-
fit your career? Did your portfolio
grow, was money more plentiful
then, and was the general atti-
tude and sentiment of the public,
better, under their leadership?
Were you a happier person during
the Reagan and Clinton years?
How did these leaders, in
your opinion handle foreign
affairs? What was the worlds
opinion of America and
Americans at the time as com-
pared to the last few years? Was
our country a safer place to live
and raise a family then, when
weighed against today? What
happened over the last 12 years
to change or diminish America as
we once knew her? In your opin-
ion, are prospects for the future
less or more opportunistic now, as
opposed to then?

he truly is an extraordi-
nary little girl. Caring,
thoughtful and most of
all, brave, Jenine Guerriero-
Ocasio said of her daughter
Abigail, who was recently
diagnosed with a rare form of
Lupus.
We were completely
blindsided by this, said Jenine.
It started out as what we
thought was a bug bite. And
that is what the doctors told us
at first. Never in my wildest
dreams would I have thought it
would have turned out like
this.
But it was true. After a
biopsy confirmed the diagno-
sis, the Guerriero-Ocasio fami-
ly went through a rollercoaster
of emotions. Lupus is a chronic
and incurable autoimmune dis-
ease. Abigail did not fit the
profile, yet it didnt make it
any less true.
Trying to find effective
treatments was also a challenge
as little Abigail fought the dis-
ease and the horrible side
effects of the medications.
She is a fighter in every
sense of the word, said Jenine.
And shes learned a lot
through this process. We want-
ed to turn a negative into a
positive for her. We created
Abigails Team of Love, which
walked for the Lupus
Foundation on October 14.
In order to raise money
for the cause, Abigail began
selling bracelets called
Abigails Loops of Love.
They have tiny little
charms on them that have a
little sparkle, just like her!
Jenine said.
I want to help everyone
who has this illness, said
Abigail. If we all raise money
we can find a cure together.
The entire family helped
sell the bracelets. Tantrum
Salon & Boutique in Totowa,
owned by Jenine and her sister
Francine, kept them at the
front counter for patrons to
pick up on their way out.
Brother Chris had them at his
deli, Il Classico in Fairfield.
Cousin Annamaria offered
them at the pediatricians
office where she works. And
friends and family handed
them out to everyone they
knew.
At $5 each, Abigail's
family found that most every-
one was willing to donate to
the cause.
It really has made a big
difference to her, Jenine said.
She is so happy and proud to
have done this. Abigail also
sold the bracelets during
Lincoln Park Day and her
classmates at St. Pius School
in Montville joined in the
effort, as well.
We are so grateful to
have all this help, love and
support, said Jenine. At the
end of the day, I want Abigail
to always know that we did
absolutely everything we could
to fight this illness with and for
her. She will always remember
that.
For more information or
to make a donation please feel
free to contact Jenine at 973-
356-5381 or the Lupus
Foundation of America direct-
ly at www.lupus.org.

T
he 2010 Healthcare
Act included several
significant tax changes
scheduled to take effect next
year. Listed below is informa-
tion on two provisions that
could impact numerous taxpay-
ers, and what you can do before
year-end to minimize the nega-
tive impact of these provisions.
Cap on healthcare flexible
spending account (FSA) con-
tributions
Before the Healthcare
Act, there was no tax-law limit
on the amount you could con-
tribute each year to your
employer's healthcare FSA
plan. That said, many plans
have always imposed their own
annual limits. Amounts you
contribute to the FSA plan are
subtracted from your taxable
salary. Then, you can use the
FSA funds to reimburse your-
self tax-free to cover qualified
medical expenses. Good deal!
Starting in 2013, however, the
maximum annual FSA contri-
bution for each employee will
be capped at $2,500. An
employee employed by two or
more unrelated employers may
elect up to $2,500 under each
employer's health FSA.
Tax planning implica-
tions: If you have an FSA plan,
your employer will ask you near
the end of the year to decide
how much you want to con-
tribute to your healthcare FSA
for 2013. At that point, the
new $2,500 contribution limit
may affect you. Other than
that, just make sure you use up
your 2012 contribution before
the deadline for doing so.
Higher threshold for itemized
medical expense deductions
Before the Healthcare
Act, the allowable itemized
deduction for unreimbursed
medical expenses paid for you,
your spouse and your depend-
ents equaled the excess of your
qualified medical expenses over
7.5 percent of your adjusted
gross income (AGI). Starting
in 2013, the deduction thresh-
old will be raised to 10 percent
of AGI for most individuals.
However, if either you or your
spouse reach age 65 by Dec. 31,
2013, the new 10 percent
threshold will not take effect
until 2017. (In other words, the
long-standing 7.5 percent
threshold will continue to
apply to those taxpayers for
20132016.) Also, if you or
your spouse turn 65 between
20142016, the long-standing
7.5 percent threshold will apply
for that year through 2016.
Starting in 2017, the 10 per-
cent threshold will apply to
everyone.
Tax planning implica-
tions: If you will be affected by
the new 10 percent threshold
next year, consider accelerating
elective qualifying unreim-
bursed medical expenses into
2012 so that your allowable
medical expense deduction for
this year will be based on the
more taxpayer-friendly 7.5 per-
cent threshold.
College loan repayment plan
application is simplified
Federal college loan bor-
rowers have several repayment
plan options. One option
income-based repayment
(IBR) is about to get sim-
pler. Under IBR, required
monthly payments are capped
based on income and family

ooth sensitivity can be
caused by a problem
with the tooths nerve
and blood supply (pulp), or by
exposure of dentin, resulting in
dentin hypersensitivity.
Dentin is a sponge-like,
hard layer underneath enamel
(the outer white, hardest
layer of a tooth) that contains
small channels that connect
the pulp to the outside of the
dentin. When dentin is
exposed, there can be hyper-
sensitivity.
Dentin hypersensitivity is
a short, sharp pain not caused
by tooth decay. It can affect up
to one in every two people at
sometime in their lives. This
condition is estimated to affect
40 million people in the U.S.
Hypersensitivity mostly
affects people in their 20s and
30s. Age changes dentin and
decreases tooth sensitivity. Age
increases gum recession (expos-
ing dentin), enamel erosion,
and tooth structure loss.
Enamels hard texture pro-
tects the pulp and dentin.
When it is lost, hypersensitivi-
ty occurs. The most common
complaints are caused by cold
and sweets.The pain from
enamel loss is caused by:
1.Acidic foods and drinks
(sodas,sports drinks,fruits,etc.)
2.Vigorous over-brushing, re-
moving the enamel
3.Abrasive toothpastes
4.Using a medium or hard
toothbrush (not American
Dental Association approved)
5.Gum recession
6.Use or overuse of tooth
whitening products
7.Clenching or grinding your
teeth (bruxism)
Part 2 discusses the actual
reason hypersensivity hurts,
damaged to the pulp (nerve),
and available treatments.

W
hat are you do-
ing on Tuesday,
November 6? Are
you one of the millions of
Americans who will choose
not to vote? If so, how come?
If the answer is because
youre too busy, youre defi-
nitely not alone. The
California Voter Foundation
found that 28 percent of
infrequent voters (and 23
percent of unregistered vot-
ers) said they were just too
busy to vote. Yet a whopping
91 percent of infrequent vot-
ers said that voting is an
important part of being a
good citizen!
So whether you are too
busy with work or simply
dont want to waste time
waiting in line at the polls,
there is a simple solution
fill out an absentee ballot!
Anyone registered to
vote can now do so by absen-
tee ballot. You do not need to
provide a reason! This way
you can cast your vote easily
from wherever you are and on
your own time. To get your
ballot, go to this website:
www.state.nj.us/state/elec-
tions/voting-information-
vote-by-mail.html. Your bal-
lot must be received by the
county clerk seven days prior
to the election.
In addition to being too
busy to vote, there are other
excuses people provide every
year. However, the answers to
these excuses may not be
quite as simple as obtaining
an absentee ballot.
Many voters believe
their vote doesnt truly mat-
ter. Although the way the
Electoral College system
works might make an individ-
ual vote seem insignificant,
its not. Each state is deciding
which candidate its electoral
votes will go toward. If your
vote did not count, there
wouldnt even need to be an
election to begin with. You
have a voice and you have
the right to be heard.

Allegiance to my clients, con-

great financial advisor will
have a game plan and an opin-

money regardless of the politi-

If you have lost faith in your

you that the Federal deficit
exceeds $16 Trillion. This
inconceivable number will
permeate our lives until long

take action implementing a

My advice is to vote for
astute financial advice, guid-

whichever way the political

didates. That doesnt mean
you shouldnt vote; take the
lesser-of-two-evils approach.
Whom would you definitely
NOT want to have in office?
Maybe youre dissatisfied
with President Obamas past
term in office. If thats the
case, vote for Romney! Do
you know for sure that you
dont want Romney in office?
Then secure President
Obamas position for a second
term! The winner of the 2012
Presidential Election is going
to be leading our country for
the next four years. Even if
you absolutely hate the can-
didates, you should choose
the one whom youd rather
have lead the country.
Then again, maybe you
just dont care. Americans
have a bad reputation for
being apathetic and voting is
one of those areas where this
apathetic attitude really
stands out. Many are disinter-
ested in politics and would
much rather hear none of it.
However, people who claim
not to care about what goes
on in our government are
often the first ones to com-
plain when things dont go
their way. If youre upset with
the state of the country, but
take no interest in it and
refuse to participate in elec-
tions, you really have no right
to complain. Dont stay home
and be disinterested what-
ever the results of Tuesday,
November 6 hold, they will
have an impact on your life
for at least the next four
years.
Voting is one of the
many rights that had to be
fought for so we could enjoy
the freedom of choosing our
future leaders. At the birth of
our country, only white men
who owned their own proper-
ty were allowed to vote;
minorities and women,
although citizens, were
denied participation in elec-
tions. It took years of protest-
ing to extend this right to all
U.S. citizens. If we refuse to
exercise our rights, we put
ourselves in danger of forfeit-
ing them. So on Election
Day, go out and be heard. (Or
stay in and mail your absen-
tee ballot!)
If you are not yet regis-
tered, its simple and takes
about five minutes. Go to
www.registertovote.org.

H
alloween is a fun-
filled holiday for
children, as well as
adults. However, for your pet,
Halloween can be a stressful,
frightening and even danger-
ous holiday. Your pet depends
on you to protect it, so please
take a few extra precautions to
help keep your pet safe during
this Halloween season.
Your companion animals
may look very cute in a cos-
tume, but make sure that it is
not annoying or unsafe for
them. It should not obstruct
your pets vision, or constrict
movement, hearing, or its
ability to breathe or bark.
Also, check for small, dan-
gling or easily chewed-off
pieces on the costume that
your pets could choke on, or
that may cause harm to them,
such as elastic, rubber bands
or buttons. When buying a
Halloween costume for your
pets, its very important to
select the appropriate size.
Do not leave your pets
outside on Halloween.
Instead, keep your pets safely
inside, away from trick-or-
treaters and other Halloween
activities. Your pets will be
less frightened and will not
feel threatened by noisy, cos-
tumed children. Plus, these
ghouls and goblins can scare
pets, causing them to escape
from the yard. It is a good idea
to keep your outdoor cat
inside several days before and
after Halloween. Black cats in
particular may be at risk from
children's pranks.
Its best not to bring the
family dog along trick-or-
treating. Although it is nice
for them to get out and trick-
or-treat with the family, dogs
may become difficult to han-
dle during the noise and con-
fusion of the festivities. Some
children you meet may be
afraid of dogs, especially in the
dark. Also, take your dog on
its walk before the Halloween
festivities begin. This will
help keep your dog safe and
calm.
Even the most social
dogs and cats should be kept
in a separate room, away from
the front door, during trick-or-
treat visiting hours. Too many
strangers can be overwhelm-
ing for a dog or cat, and some
children may be afraid of ani-
mals. Also, you open the door
many times during the
evening for trick-or-treaters,
so be very careful your dog or
cat does not dart outside.
Make sure your cat or
dog wears a current animal
license tag or ID tag on its col-
lar or is micro-chipped. If, for
any reason, a pet does escape
or become lost, you increase
the chances that your pet will
be returned to you if he is
wearing a collar with an ID
tag.
Dont share any
candy with pets, espe-
cially chocolate. Tell
your children not to
share their candy
with the family pet
and make sure that
candy is put out of
reach after children
return from their trick-or-
treating adventures. Candy
can be harmful and chocolate
is toxic for animals, causing
vomiting, restlessness, heart
disturbances and even death.
If you suspect your pet has
eaten chocolate or other
candy that causes discomfort,
consult your veterinarian
immediately. Throw your
candy wrappers away, too.
Wrappers and lollipop sticks
can be dangerous if your pet
swallows them.
Keep your pet away from
potentially hazardous decora-
tions. Flames from jack-o-
lanterns and candles could
singe or burn your pet. Keep
small Halloween decorations
away from your pet, since they
could cause choking.
Use these tips to have a
festive and safe Halloween. For
more information and tips
about holiday safety for pets,
call or visit your family veteri-
narian. Remember, your veteri-
narian is your very best source
for advice on keeping your pet
safe, healthy and happy!

icasso once said, Art
washes from the soul the
dust of everyday life.
Art therapy is based on the
idea that art can be healing
and taps wordlessly into the
very core of our inner lives. It
is an established mental health
profession that uses the cre-
ative process of art-making to
improve and enhance the
physical, mental and emotion-
al well-being of individuals of
all ages. In art therapy, people
are encouraged to express
what they cannot say in words
through a variety of art forms,
including painting, collage,
drawing and sculpture.
The Riverdale Art
Center (RAC) and Healing
Arts Family Connection, two
non-profits dedicated to bring-
ing the healing aspects of art
to all, have combined efforts
to offer a unique workshop:
Family Open Studio for
Children with Autism.
Children and their families
will have the opportunity to
create art together and be able
to connect with other families.
Art projects will be varied and
adapted to all abilities, and no
prior artistic training or ability
is required to attend. The
workshop will encourage self-
expression and provide the
opportunity to share artwork
with the group. Most impor-
tantly, there will be opportuni-
ties for children to work on
building their social skills.

R
aking leaves is an
annual event for peo-
ple in many parts of
the country. Some people
enjoy getting out in the crisp,
autumn air and spending a day
cleaning up the yard. Others
do not relish the idea of hours
upon hours of leaf removal
from their lawns. Making the
process easier and more enjoy-
able benefits all involved.
The majority of home-
owners realize that in order to
keep their lawn pristine, leaves
and debris must be routinely
removed from the yard. Raking
leaves is an activity that takes
time and energy. It also can be
strenuous work. However, by
employing a few techniques,
the work doesn't have to be
that difficult and it might even
be fun.
Invest in a quality rake, par-
ticularly one that bends a bit
with each stroke. This will
help maximize the number of
leaves that will be collected
with each pass.
If raking routinely causes
aches and pains in your arms,
shoulders and wrists, look for
ergonomic rakes that are the
proper height for your body.
Move your legs when you are
raking instead of remaining
stationary and just using your
arms. This will help reduce
your risk of back pain.
Use smaller passes of the rake
to collect leaves. This method
is more efficient and less taxing
on your muscles.
* Turn on music while you are
raking. Sing along to the tunes
or move with the beat, and it
just may take your mind off of
the task at hand.
Be sure to rake downwind;
otherwise every pile of leaves
you collect may end up blow-
ing around and giving you
more work.
Rake leaves in groups. Enlist
the help of all family members
so that it will take much less
time. Plus, everyone gets to
spend time working together.
Talking and joking around will
certainly pass the time more
quickly.
Use a leaf blower sparingly. It
may seem advantageous to
simply blow the leaves to the
curb, but this can take more
time and leaf blowers are much
noisier. Use the blower to dis-
lodge leaves from hard-to-
reach areas, like behind bushes
or under decks. Then rake the
leaves into manageable piles.
Wait until after the peak time
for leaves to be falling before
you do the majority of raking.
Otherwise, you could spend
just about every Saturday and
Sunday cleaning up leaves.
Create family-centered
games while raking. Have con-
tests to see who can rake the
largest pile in the shortest
amount of time. Take breaks so
that everyone can enjoy jump-
ing in a giant leaf pile or hors-
ing around.
Host a leaf-raking party with
friends and family members.
Tie it into a day when there is
a football game on television,
or toss around the old pigskin
after the job is done.
* Use two garbage pail lids to
pick up leaves and put them
into disposal bags. You'll grab
more leaves in each pass.
There are some leaf blowers
that can vacuum up leaves and
mulch them at the same time.
Put a portion of this leaf mulch
into a compost pile or in your

then crumbling it up into a bowl. Then a con-
tainer of cake frosting is added, making the
mixture moldable. The mixture is then
formed into balls, which are put on lollipop
sticks and dipped into melted chocolate. The
second cake pop method is to purchase pans
or special waffle-iron-type devices that turn
batter into balls while cooking. Then the
cake balls are put on sticks and covered in
frosting or chocolate.
Candied fruit: Caramel-covered apples are
an autumn tradition, but you also can dip
bananas into chocolate or pieces of pineapple
for a pseudo-healthy treat.
Chocolate bark: Create a healthy and deli-
cious mixture of ingredients by melting dark
chocolate and adding in nuts, dried cranber-
ries, raisins, sunflower seeds, or anything else
you can think off. Pour the mixture on a piece
of waxed paper and allow to harden in the
refrigerator. Then cut into chunks and enjoy.

come, especially those that involve communi-
cation and socialization. It can be hard for par-
ents to find appropriate activities for their
autistic children to experience joy and self-
esteem because of behavioral challenges.
However, children with autism can be
extremely creative if directed and guided in a
nurturing way that encourages them to relate
and respond. For individuals with autism, Art
therapy can be beneficial due to their intense
sensory needs; they generally benefit from
more visual, auditory, kinesthetic, concrete
and hands-on therapies. A trained art thera-
pist will be able to understand children with
autism through art media and the creative
process, and help them with their behavioral
issues.
Pamela Ullmann, a licensed and trained
art therapist with 15 years of experience, joins
the RAC as the Director of Art Therapy. She
currently serves as the president-elect of the
New Jersey Art Therapy Association and has
worked with children and families in a variety
of community and healthcare settings. Pamela
will be leading this workshop and developing
more unique programs for the RAC in the
coming year. To find out more about Pamela
and art therapy, visit her website at www.col-
orsofplay.com.
The workshop is scheduled on
Wednesdays from 4:155:30pm at the RAC,
starting Nov. 7 and running through Dec. 12.
The RAC is located at 5 Mathews Ave. in
Riverdale. For more information on this event
or to register, please call the RAC
at 973-513-9250 or go online to
www.riverdaleartcenter.org. The workshop fee
is $20 per session for an entire family and
includes all art materials.
