WASHINGTON at ARIZONA ARIZONA STADIUM OCT. 20, 2012 7:00 P.M. PT (PAC-12 NETWORKS) THE HEAD COACH: In a frequently-told tale, Husky football coach Steve Sarkisian recalls his days as a young assistant traveling to face Washington at Husky Stadium. During the drive across Lake Washington, with the iconic home of the Dawgs towering ahead, Sarkisian marveled aloud at the city, the stadium and the atmosphere surrounding the UW program. A decade or so later, Sarkisian is in charge of the Washington football program he was admiring that day. And in just two years, he has re-established the kind of tough, exciting environment that was then, and is again now, so closely associated with the Husky football. The 2011 season, Sarkisians third as head coach, provided more highlights for his up-andcoming program. The Husky offense posted one of its most prolific seasons ever, scoring 434 points over the course of the season, the most by a UW squad since the 1991 national championship team and the second-most in school history. The Huskies scored nearly 12 more points per game than they did the previous year. They also had marked improvement in passing yards (65 more yards per game) and total offense (47 more yards per game), while the teams third-down percentage improved vastly over the previous season, from 32 to 46 percent. Sarkisian coached his team to a third straight win over Washington State in the annual Apple Cup to remain undefeated against the UWs in-state rival and to wrap up a 7-5 regular-season record and 5-4 mark in the Pac-12 North. The Huskies secured a berth in the Valero Alamo Bowl, the No. 2 game in the Pac-12 bowl lineup. In 2010, Sarkisians second season in Seattle, the Huskies made another clear step forward. The Dawgs went 7-6 overall and finished third in the Pac-10 Conference with a 5-4 record. Then, in the Holiday Bowl, Washington provided one of the bowl seasons top games, beating an 18th-ranked Nebraska squad, 19-7. The win over the Cornhuskers was the last of a series of exciting, gutsy victories in 2010. The season included three Husky wins decided on the very last play of the game (Oregon State, USC and Cal), plus another in which the winning score came inside the final minute (WSU). Sarkisian was introduced as the new head coach of the Washington football team on Dec. 8, 2008. From the start, Sarkisian made it clear that he didnt think it would take long to turn the program around and get it back to the high level of success that UW football has enjoyed throughout its history. In his first season, 2009, he seemed to prove that he was right. Washington, which posted a winless season for the first time in school history the year before Sarkisian signed on, surged to a 5-7 record in 2009, an improvement of five victories over the previous year. No BCS-conference school in the nation could boast such improvement in terms of wins in 2009. And, Sarkisians Husky squad pulled off that feat against a schedule that included 10 opponents who ended the season bowl-eligible. Sarkisian came to the UW with a wealth of experience as a quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator. His string of success is nearly unprecedented as, during his time at USC, he coached two Heisman Trophy winners and oversaw one of the nations most consistent and dominant offenses. Sarkisian spent 2007 and 2008 as the Trojans assistant head coach and offensive coordinator. He had also previously served as assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach (2005-06), quarterbacks coach (2002-03) and as an offensive assistant (2001) at USC, for a total of seven seasons there. During his seven seasons as a member of the Trojans staff, the team posted a combined 74-15 record. As offensive coordinator, his record was 22-3. Aside from his various roles at USC, Sarkisian also spent one season as quarterbacks coach for the Oakland Raiders in 2004 and as QBs coach at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif., in 2000, his first coaching job. Sarkisian starred at the quarterback position at the prep, collegiate and pro levels. After his standout career at Brigham Young University, he was played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League for three seasons (1997-99). He had a record-setting two-year (1995-96) career at BYU, playing under legendary coach Lavell Edwards. Sarkisian completed 549-of-824 passes (66.6 percent) for 7,755 yards and 55 touchdowns in his career. His 162.0 career passing efficiency rating ranked third on the all-time NCAA list. As a senior in 1996, he led the nation in passing efficiency (173.6, No. 7 all-time) as the Western Athletic Conference champion Cougars went 14-1 and won the 1997 Cotton Bowl. He was the WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 1996, and earned second-team All-America honors. Sarkisian transferred to BYU from El Camino Junior College, where he played two seasons (1993-94). He was a first-team Junior College AllAmerica selection as a sophomore and earned all-conference honors in 1993 as a Page 2

WASHINGTON at ARIZONA ARIZONA STADIUM OCT. 20, 2012 7:00 P.M. PT (PAC-12 NETWORKS) COACHING STAFF: Washingtons assistant coaching staff returns entirely includes five new members in 2012, meaning half of the 10 full-time coaches are in their first season at the UW. Nearly all of the nine fulltime assistant coaches have some sort of tie to the Northwest and many played for then-Pac-10 football programs. The offensive side of the ball is led by newcomer Eric Kiesau, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach who came to the UW from California. A former QB at Portland State, Kiesau spent the last decade at either Cal or Colorado. He joins three offensive coaches who have been at the UW since Steve Sarkisian was hired. Associate head coach - offense and running backs coach Joel Thomas, in his fourth year at UW, grew up in Port Angeles, Wash., and is a member of the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame. He is still the Vandals all-time leader in carries, rushing yards and rushing TDs. Fellow Idaho grad Dan Cozzetto is in his fourth season as the UWs run game coordinator and offensive line coach. Cozzetto grew up in Spokane, Wash., and was also the Washington line coach in 2003. He came to the UW from Arizona State. UW pass game coordinator and wide receivers coach Jimmie Daugherty played QB at Missouri and spent most of his coaching career prior to the UW at the University of San Diego. Assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and special teams coordinator Johnny Nansen is a fourth-year coach at the UW. He grew up in Long Beach, Calif., but played football at Washington State and spent the previous five years at Idaho before moving over to the UW. The four defensive coaches are all new to the UW this year. Coordinator Justin Wilcox grew up in Junction City, Ore., and spent four years as a defensive back at Oregon. He came to the UW from Tennessee and, prior to that, coached at Boise State, among others. His former college roommate, Peter Sirmon, oversees the UW linebackers. A four-year starter at Oregon and a native of Walla Walla, Wash., Sirmon played in the NFL for seven years before moving on to coaching. After stints at Central Washington and Oregon, he worked with Wilcox at Tennessee before coming to Seattle. The new defensive backs coach is Keith Heyward, a four-year letterman at Oregon State. An L.A.-area native, Heyward has coached at OSU six of the last seven seasons. Defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator Tosh Lupoi had spent his entire playing and coaching career at California before moving to the UW this past off-season. A former Cal defensive lineman, hed coached the line at his alma mater the last four years after two seasons as a GA. Washington also has two returning grad assistants and two new ones. Washingtons two returners are Jordan Paopao and Donte Williams. Paopao, who works with the tight ends, was a four-year starting center at the University of San Diego while Williams, who prepped at Culver City High in the Los Angeles area, was a defensive back at Syracuse. The newcomers are Eric Guttorp, a Seattle native who wrapped up his career as a UW kicker last season, and Andrew Rolin, who played and coached at USD alongside Paopao and Dougherty before heading north to Seattle this off-season. VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDELINE: While the Huskies full-time coaching staff doesnt include any UW graduates, nearly all of them have some tie to the state or to the Northwest and a surprising number have actually played for their alma mater against the Dawgs. Head man Steve Sarkisians only loss in a 14-1 season as a senior at BYU in 1996 came to the UW at Husky Stadium. New defensive coaches Justin Wilcox and Peter Sirmon both faced the Huskies during their playing careers at Oregon from 1996 to 1999. Former Washington State linebacker Johnny Nansen, now the Huskies recruiting coordinator and special teams coach, was on the opposite sideline for several Apple Cups in the early-to-mid 1990s and new defensive backs coach Keith Heyward played in a few barnburners vs. the UW for Oregon State from 1997 to 2000. More recently, defensive line coach Tosh Lupoi squared off with the Huskies during his time as a d-lineman at California at the start of the last decade. And while neither offensive line coach Dan Cozzetto nor running backs coach Joel Thomas ever faced Washington during their careers at Idaho, both grew up in the Evergreen State. Finally, new offensive coordinator Eric Kiesau has also never played against Washington, but did play his college football just across the border at Portland State. HUSKIES vs. WILDCATS HISTORY: Washington holds an 18-9-1 edge in the series against Arizona, with the Huskies taking 11 of the last 17. Last year, the UW beat Arizona, 42-31, as Chris Polk scored five TDs, rushed for 144 yards and caught four passes for 100 yards. In 2010 in Tucson, Wildcats backup QB Matt Scott led his team to a 44-14 win, completing 18-of-22 passes for 233 yards and two TDs. Three seasons ago in Seattle resulted in a stunning Husky win as linebacker Mason Foster intercepted a Nick Foles pass that deflected off the foot of an Arizona receiver and returend it 37 yards for a score with only 2:37 left. Washington won, 3633, as the Cats final drive was cut short by a Desmond Trufant interception. In 2008 in Tucson, Arizona TE Rob Gronkowski tied a school record with three touchdown receptions as the Wildcats won, 49-19. In 2007 in Seattle, the Wildcats, behind quarterback Willie Tuitama, completed an impressive comeback and beat the UW 48-41 despite Jake Locker rushing for 157 yards and passing for 336. In 2006 in Tucson, the Huskies took a 21-3 lead in the second quarter and won, 21-10. In 2005, also in Tucson, Isaiah Stanbacks dramatic, 69-yard bomb on the last play of the first half and 200 rushing yards from James Sims led the Huskies to a 38-14 win. In recent years, the series has been marked by very close games. In fact, the six UW-Arizona games prior to 2005 were decided by a total of 31 points, with the most lopsided result (a 31-21 Arizona win) coming in 2004. That year, the Wildcats overcame a 13-9 halftime deficit, out-scoring the Huskies, 14-0, in the second half for the win. In 2003, Arizona snapped a string of 13 straight home losses in conference play by pulling out a late, 27-22 victory. In 2002, it was the Huskies who rallied late when Reggie Williams scored on an 80-yard reception with only 2:03 remaining in the game. In 2001, Cody Pickett ran in from three yards out with 13 seconds left to cap an amazing day. Only two weeks after separating his right (throwing) vs. USC, Pickett broke the UW record with 455 passing yards as the Huskies won, 31-28. Also included in the close contests are Washingtons come-from-behind, 35-32 win in 2000 in Seattle (Marques Tuiasosopo scored with 1:10 left for the win a week after Curtis Williams was injured at Stanford), and the 1998 31-28 Cats win, which may be the most memorable game in the series history. Trailing 28-24 to Washington with under a minute to play, Arizona quarterback Ortege Jenkins flipped head over heels over three Husky defenders, landing on his feet in the end zone for the winning score. WASHINGTON-ARIZONA TIES: The Washington and Arizona coaching staffs share no direct ties in that none of the members of the two staffs have ever worked together. As for players, Washington linebacker Thomas Tutogi is the brother of Arizona fullback/d-lineman Taimi Tutogi. They both attended Chula Vista High School in California. Thomas also went to Southwestern JC with Arizonas Elliott Taylor. The UWs current roster includes just two players from Arizona: freshmen Ryan Masel (Desert Vista) and Kendyl Taylor (Hamilton). Arizonas Tevin Hood went to Hamilton and The Wildcats have only two players from the state of Washington on its roster: Sir Thomas Jackson (ODea) and Justin Samuels (Camas), as well as Vaughn Brinkman, who went to Gonzaga Prep, but lived in Idaho. Husky OT Ben Riva wen to ODea while UW TB Bishop Sankey went to Gonzaga Prep. Additionally, UWs Sean Parker and UAs Eric Bender-Ramsay were classmates at L.A.s Narbonne High while Husky Erik Kohler attended Oaks Christian HS in California, same as Arizonas Trace Biskin. UWs Colin Tanigawa and Arizonas Jared Baker both graduated from Loyola High in L.A.The UWs Ken Egu and UAs Kylan Butler were teammates at De La Salle HS in northern California while Arizonas Beau Boyster went to St. John Bosco, same as Huskies Keith Price and Will Shamburger. TEAM NOTES
THE PAC-12: Last season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in 1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools (Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other division each season. This year (and last), the Huskies will not face UCLA or Arizona State. Prior to last year, the last time that Washington didnt face UCLA in a season was in 1992 (when the Pac-10 schedule was eight games). The UW didnt face Arizona State in 2003 or 2004. CAPTAINS: At the Huskies annual Raise the Woof! preseason celebration, the captains for the 2012 season were unveiled. This season, thanks to a tie in the player voting, five captains were selected. On offense, junior quarterback Keith Price (Compton, Calif.) and senior center Drew Schaefer (Sammamish, Wash.) were honored. On defense, three players were selected: junior safety Sean Parker (Los Angeles), sophomore linebacker John Timu (Long Beach, Calif.) and senior cornerback Desmond Trufant (Tacoma). All five players are serving as UW captain for the first time as all four of the Huskies captains in 2011 have departed. DECADE AFTER DECADE: Washington has won a conference title and a trip to the Rose Bowl in each of the last nine decades, dating back to the 1920s when Washington won the berth in 1923 and 1925. In the 1930s, the Dawgs won the 36 title. In the 40s, Washington earned the trip in 1943 and then barely slipped in under the wire in the 1950s, winning the 1959 crown. The Huskies won two Rose Bowl berths in the 1960s -- 1960 and 1963 -- and one in the 1970s (1977). Titles in 1980 and 1982 did it for that decade and three straight trips to Pasadena to begin the 1990s covered that 10-year span. In the 2000s, UW was the first team to earn Rose Bowl berths in nine straight decades. USC joined the Dawgs in that distinction in 2004 after their New Years Day appearance in Pasadena. THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 181-57-3 (.757) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. Washington is 2-1 such games this season as Bishop Sankey hit the century mark in wins over Portland State and Stanford and the loss at Oregon. HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go handin-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game 79 times. The Huskies record stands at 65-13-1 (.829) in those contests. Since 1995, UW is 40-10-1 (.794) when rushing for 200 yards. PLAYING AT CENTURYLINK FIELD: Washington will play the entire 2012 home season at CenturyLink Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Sounders FC soccer. CenturyLink Field is located in the SoDo District of Seattle, just south of downtown (hence, SoDo). The stadium was opened in 2002 on the site of the old Kingdome. Washington has played two games there, prior to this season. In 2005, the UW opened the season with a road game vs. Air Force (the game was Air Forces home game, but moved to the neutral site), falling to the Falcons, 20-17. Last year, in a bid to give the Husky Stadium renovation project a head start, the Huskies played the annual Apple Cup game at CenturyLink Field, beating Washington State, 38-21, in front of 64,559 fans. The stadium, operated by First & Goal, Inc., has a FieldTurf playing surface and a football capacity of 67,000. HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium is currently undergoing a massive renovation which began last November following the Oregon game. The Seattle icon was first opened in 1920. Upper decks were added in the 1950s (south) and 1980s (north). Renovations will completely remake the lower bowl and the south deck. The stadium track will be removed and an operations center for the football team will be built into the west end. For much more information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com. HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that will be completed in time for the 2013 season. The 2011 season marked the 92nd season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus facility. Thanks to several major renovations, Husky Stadiums seating capacity increased to 72,500. UWs all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 357-169-21 (.673). Washington will re-open the stadium vs. Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. FAMILY TIES: As is the case with most seasons of Husky football, there are a number of players on the Washington football team related to either current or former Huskies. LB Jamaal Kearse is the younger brother of former WR Jermaine Kearse, who finished his career last season. RS-freshman safety Evan Zegers father, John, played safety at the UW, lettering in 1980 and 1981, while sophomore WR Kasen Williams dad, Aaron was a four-year letterman (1979-82) wide receiver for the Huskies. Freshman OL Shane Brostek is the son of Husky All-America center Bern Brostek (1986-89). Senior DL Talia Crichton, is a cousin of former DE Daniel Teo-Nesheim. Junior quarterback Keith Price is a cousin of former UW tailback Jelani Harrison. A little further afield, sophomore TE Michael Hartvigson is a cousin to former UW baseball pitchers Chad and Grant Hartvigson. Incidentally, at least three Huskies have close family ties to Washington State. LB Nate Fellner is the grandson of former WSU head coach Jim Sweeney. Cooper Pelluers father, Scott, played at WSU, as did Husky cornerback Desmond Trufants brother Marcus. Pelluers uncle Steve, however, was a UW QB and his father Scott was an assistant coach at UW. RANDOM NOTES: Washingtons roster includes player from eight different states (based on where the player completed high school): Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington ... Washington has a long tradition of great Polynesian players; this years roster includes 19 players of Samoan, Tongan or Hawaiian descent: James Atoe, Jonathan Amosa, Jesse Callier, Talia Crichton, Jarett Finau, Cory Fuavai, Princeton Fuimaono, Micah Hatchie, Hauoli Jamora, Lawrence Lagafuaina, Sione Potoae, Danny Shelton, John Timu, Semisi Tokolahi, Siosifa Tufunga, Taniela Tupou, Thomas Tutogi, Pio Vatuvei and Psalm Wooching.
