Election Day occurs every November, and its the
duty of all eligible United States citizens to exercise
their right to vote. Doing so is the easiest way
Americans can actively participate in government.
Participating in federal, state and local government
can be done in many ways, but few are as easy and
important as voting. The following are a few voting
guidelines to consider as Election Day approaches.
Eligibility
Only United States citizens can vote in federal, state
and local elections. In many states, voters must be 18
years old to vote. However, some states do afford 17-
year-olds the right to vote.
Voter eligibility may also depend on the voters
residency. Each state has its own residency
requirements. To learn the requirements in your state,
visit the United States Election Assistance
Commission at www.eac.gov.
Voters may also be able to register to vote in person
at various public facilities. This varies from state to
state, but such facilities may include the nearest
Department of Motor Vehicles office, the local
election office, public assistance agencies, armed
services recruitment centers or any public facility that
has been designated as a voter registration agency by
the state.

While theres no way you can
fully protect yourself from
cancer, there are ways to
reduce your risk of develop-
ing cancer.
Some of the most effective
ways to lower your cancer

these choices will not only
reduce your risk of develop-
ing cancer but also improve
your overall quality of life.
Avoid tobacco. According to
the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, lung
cancer causes more deaths
than any other cancer. The
majority of lung cancer cases
are caused by cigarette smok-
ing, and male smokers are 23
times more likely to develop
lung cancer than men who
dont smoke. Women who
smoke are 13 times more like-
ly to develop lung cancer than
their nonsmoking counter-
parts. In addition, the United
States Department of Health
and Human Services notes
that smoking can also cause a
host of other cancers, includ-
ing cancer of the larynx,
mouth and throat, esophagus,
bladder, kidney, pancreas,
c e r v i x , a n d s t o ma c h .
Avoiding tobacco entirely can
drastically reduce your risk of
developing any of these can-
cers.
Dont allow others to smoke
around you. Even people
who dont smoke might be at
a significant risk of develop-
ing cancer if they allow others
to smoke around them. In a
2006 report titled The Health
Consequences of Involuntary
Ex p o s u r e t o To b a c c o
Smoke, HHS researchers
revealed that cancer-causing
and toxic chemicals are high-
er in secondhand smoke than
in the smoke inhaled by
smokers. Exposure to second-
hand smoke at home or at
work increases your risk by to
20 to 30 percent, so dont
allow others to smoke in your
presence.
Avoid heavy alcohol con-
sumption. The World Health
Organization notes that stud-
ies conducted around the
globe have found that regular
alcohol consumption increas-
es a persons risk of develop-
ing mouth, voice box and
throat cancers. In 2007, WHO
researchers published a study
that found daily consumption
of roughly 50 grams, or less
than two ounces, of alcohol
doubles or triples a persons
risk of the aforementioned
cancers compared with the
risk in nondrinkers.
Numerous studies have also
found that moderate alcohol
consumption can reduce risk
for other diseases, including
coronary artery disease. As a
resul t , men and women
should discuss alcohol con-
sumption with their physician
and, if they do consume alco-
hol, always do so in modera-
tion.

Pituitary tumors
more common than you might think
Though few pituitary tumors are cancerous,
the number of pituitary tumors diagnosed
each year may be far lower than their actual
number. According to the American Cancer
Society, roughly 7,000 pituitary tumors are
diagnosed each year, and nearly all of those
are benign, or non-cancerous. However, doc-
tors have discovered that pituitary tumors
are more common than once thought.
Doctors who examined the brains of people
who had died or people who have had imag-
ing tests like an MRI found that as many as
one in four people have a pituitary tumor
without even knowing it. These tumors can
occur in anyone, even children, and many
rarely cause symptoms or health problems.
However, pituitary tumors apparent preva-
lence makes it important that adults under-
stand pituitary tumors so theyre better
equipped should they receive a pituitary
tumor diagnosis.
What is the pituitary gland?
The pituitary gland is found just above the
nasal passages and is directly connected to
the hypothalamus, a region of the brain
responsible for a host of important func-
tions. The American Association of
Neurological Surgeons notes that the pitu-
itary gland is often referred to as the master
gland, as it constantly monitors body func-
tions, sending signals to remote organs and
glands to control their function. The pitu-
itary gland controls and coordinates growth
and development; the function of various
organs, including the kidneys; and the func-
tion of other glands, such as the thyroid and
adrenal glands.
What is a pituitary tumor?
Nearly all pituitary tumors are pituitary ade-
nomas, or benign tumors that do not spread
outside the skull. Adenomas are typically
confined to the tiny space where the pitu-
itary gland sits, though they can grow into
the surrounding blood vessels, nerves and
coverings of the brain. The fourth most com-
mon intercranial tumor, pituitary adenomas
are the most common disease affecting the
pituitary gland, and most often affect people
in their 30s or 40s, though they have been
found in children as well.
Apituitary tumor that is malignant is known
as a pituitary carcinoma, and, though its pos-
sible, it likely will not spread to other parts of
the body. Perhaps because pituitary carcino-
mas are so rare, it can be difficult for doctors
to distinguish them from an adenoma unless
the tumor starts to spread to another part of
the body.
Some additional types of tumors do not
develop from cells of the pituitary gland, but
they can grow into it and cause damage. Such
tumors are very rare, however.
Are there symptoms of pituitary tumors?
There are symptoms of pituitary tumors,
most of which result from dysfunction in the
glands that secrete hormones. Such dysfunc-
tion can cause overproduction of growth
hormones, leading to a condition such as
giantism, or underproduction of growth hor-
mones, which can lead to hypothyroidism,
which causes retardation of growth and
mental development.
The most common side effect of a pituitary
tumor is compression of the optic nerves,
which transmits impulses from the retina to
the brain. If compression of the optic nerve
occurs, a person will gradually lose his or
her vision, a loss that will first be noticed
with the deterioration of lateral peripheral
vision.
If three or more of the following symptoms
are present, doctors might suspect a pituitary
tumor:
Vision problems (blurred or double
vision, drooping eyelid)
Headaches in the forehead area
Nausea or vomiting
Impaired sense of smell
Sexual dysfunction
Depression
Fatigue
Infertility
Growth problems
Osteoporosis
Unexplained weight gain
Unexplained weight loss
Easy bruising
Aching joints
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Disrupted menses
Early menopause
Muscle weakness
How is a pituitary tumor diag-
nosed?
Doctors who suspect a pituitary tumor will
give patients a physical and test their vision
to see if patients have lost their peripheral
vision. Hormone testing of the blood and
urine and imaging tests, such as an MRI, are
used to confirm a diagnosis.
Can a pituitary tumor
be treated?
As with most health issues, the earlier a pitu-
itary tumor is detected the better a patients
chance at being cured. In addition, early
intervention increases the chances a doctor
can control the tumor and its side effects.
Doctors treating a pituitary tumor can do so
in three ways: surgical removal of the tumor;
radiation therapy to kill tumor cells; or med-
ication therapy to shrink or eradicate the
tumor.

gery generally at the forefront of their treat-

remove precancerous cells. They may be
implemented to stop symptoms of cancer, such

Furthermore, lasers can be used to seal lymph
vessels to prevent the spread of cancer to other
areas of the body.
Lasers are typically used in areas of the body
that are hard to reach or require the ultimate in
precision. Thats why, according to St.
Josephs Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia, laser
treatment can be so effective when treating
the vocal cords, skin, lungs, and genitals.
They are often used in surgery by way of an
endoscope, which is a small tube that allows
surgical tools access to the body. Lasers
actually can cut very minute areas, some
less than the width of thread, which mini-
mizes damage to surrounding tissue.
One of the other ways lasers are used in can-
cer treatment is through photodynamic ther-
apy. This is a method of destroying cancer
cells selectively while leaving healthy cells
unscathed. Patients are injected with a
chemical that reacts with argon light.

A more comfortable and less invasive screen-
ing method for colorectal cancer is helping to
reduce the rates of new cases and deaths as a
result of the disease, according to the
National Institutes of Health. Research spon-
sored by the National Cancer Institute
revealed that colorectal cancer mortality
(deaths) was reduced by 26 percent and inci-
dence (new cases) was reduced by 21 percent
as a result of screening with a sigmoidoscopy
over a colonoscopy.
What is a sigmoidoscopy?
Flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure used
to see inside of the sigmoid colon (the last
one-third of the colon) and rectum. This pro-
cedure is typically used to observe ulcers,
inflamed tissues, abnormal growths and early
signs of cancer. Sigmoidoscopy only enables
doctors to see the lower part of the colon,
which is generally why the procedure is less
invasive than colonoscopy.
Preparing for the test
Before getting a colonoscopy, an individual
must refrain from eating solids for several
hours to a day prior to testing and drink a
specialized laxative that will clear the entire
colon of waste. With a sigmoidoscopy, the
patient uses an enema about 2 hours before
the procedure to only remove solids from the
sigmoid colon. The enema may take the form
of flushing water, a mild soap solution or lax-
ative. In some cases, a more thorough colon
cleansing and a restricted diet may be neces-
sary.
Because a sigmoidoscopy doesnt typically
require an extensive amount of uncomfortable
prep work, more people are inclined to under-
go the procedure.
How the procedure works
A doctor will place you lying down on your
left side on the examination table. Then a
long, flexible, thin, lighted tube called a sig-
moidoscope is inserted in the anus and slowly
guided through the rectum and sigmoid colon.
The colon is inflated with air to give the doc-
tor a better view, and images are sent to a
computer screen.
Special instruments can be passed through the
scope to take tissue samples or remove
polyps. The entire examination takes about 20
minutes.

About colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause
of cancer-related deaths in the United States,
and it is the second most common cancer in
women and the third most common in men
across the globe. In the past fecal occult
blood testing, or FOHB, was the primary tool
for detection. However, now sigmoidoscopy
and colonoscopy are believed to be more sen-
sitive tests for detecting potential cancer-
causing polyps.
Among volunteers who underwent sigmoi-
doscopy procedures and follow-up over a
course of 12 years, those who had the sigmoi-
doscopy screening had a 21 percent lower
incidence of colorectal cancer overall and a
26 percent lower rate of colorectal cancer
mortality than participants in the usual care
group.
Who should get screened?
It is recommended that all individuals age 50
or older should opt for a sigmoidoscopy or
colonoscopy to detect for abnormalities in the
gastrointestinal tract. Individuals who are
experiencing symptoms like changes in bowel
movements, pain and bleeding, may want to
discuss the option of having a sigmoidoscopy
at an earlier age.

What parents should know
about childhood tumors
Cancer claims millions of lives across the globe each year. No one is immune from
cancer, though some people, either due to genetics or certain lifestyle choices, are at
greater risk than others.
Among those with a low risk of developing cancer are children. Childhood cancer
can occur, but it is generally rare. However, when cancer does strike in children, it
comes in one of the two most common forms of leukemia or lymphoma. Leukemia
begins in the blood-forming tissue and causes a large number of blood cells to be
produced and enter the bloodstream, and lymphoma. The disease lymphoma begins
in the cells of the immune system.
Brain and spinal cord tumors are the third most common type of childhood cancer.
Their cause is unknown, and the symptoms of childhood brain and spinal cord
tumors vary from child to child. That said, its important for parents to understand
brain and spinal cord tumors so they can be better prepared should their children
begin to exhibit any symptoms.
How does a brain or
spinal cord tumor form?
There are many types of brain and spinal cord
tumors. But each type forms when there is an
abnormal growth of cells. This abnormal
growth can begin in different areas of the brain
or spinal cord.
Are brain or spinal cord
tumors benign or malignant?
Atumor on the brain or spinal cord does not
always indicate cancer. According to the
National Cancer Institute, some such tumors are
benign. Benign tumors will grow and press on
nearby areas of the brain, but these tumors
rarely spread into other tissue.
Malignant brain tumors grow rapidly and
spread into other brain tissue. As a malignant
tumor grows into or presses on an area of the
brain, that part of the brain it is growing into or
pressing on may stop working as its supposed
to.
Whether a brain or spinal cord tumor is benign
or malignant, some symptoms, including ones
that are unpleasant, will occur, and the tumor
will require treatment.
What are the symptoms of child-
hood brain and
spinal cord tumors?
Atumor on the brain or spinal cord may cause
uncomfortable symptoms for a child. However,
the appearance of these symptoms does not
necessarily mean a child has a brain or spinal
cord tumor. The symptoms could be indicative
of another condition.
Symptoms will also vary depending on where
the tumor is. Symptoms of a childhood brain
tumor include:
- morning headache, or headaches that go
away after vomiting
- frequent nausea or vomiting
- vision, hearing and speech problems
- loss of balance and difficulty walking
- unusual sleepiness
- change in activity level
- unusual changes in personality
or behavior
- increase in head size (in infants)
- seizures
Symptoms of a childhood spinal
tumor include:
- back pain or pain that spreads from the
back toward the arms or legs
- difficulty urinating
- a change in bowel habits
- weakness in the legs
- trouble walking
Children suffering from brain or spinal cord
tumors may also be unable to reach certain
growth and development milestones. This
includes sitting up, walking and talking in sen-
tences.
How do doctors determine
if a child has a brain or
spinal cord tumor?
There are several tests and procedures a doctor
can employ to determine if a child has a brain
or spinal cord tumor.
Physical exam and history: A doctor may per-
form an exam of the body to check for signs of
disease, including lumps or anything out of the
ordinary. The doctor will also want to know the
childs medical history, include past illnesses
and treatments.
Neurological exam: Aneurological exam is a
series of questions and tests to check the brain,
spinal cord and nerve function. These tests will
measure a childs coordination, his or her abili-
ty to walk normally and his or her mental status
and will examine how well the muscles, senses
and reflexes are working.
Serum tumor marker test: During this proce-
dure, a doctor will take a blood sample to
measure the amounts of certain substances
released into the blood by organs, tissue or
tumor cells. Certain substances are linked to
certain types of cancer, so finding more of them
in the bloodstream can help the doctor make a
more accurate diagnosis.
MRI with gadolinium: This procedure will
make a series of detailed pictures of the brain
and spinal cord. The gadolinium is injected into
the childs vein and will collect around the can-
cer cells so they appear brighter in the picture.
CT scan: ACT scan, or CAT scan, is a proce-
dure that takes a series of pictures of areas
inside the body. These pictures are detailed and
taken from different angles.
Angiogram: This procedure focuses on the
blood vessels and the flow of blood in the
brain. A contrast dye is injected into the blood
vessel, and as that dye moves through the ves-
sel, pictures are taken to determine if there are
any blockages.
PET scan: This procedure is looking for malig-
nant tumor cells in the body. Some radioactive
glucose is injected into the body, and the PET
scanner rotates around the body, taking pictures
of where the glucose is being used. Malignant
tumors take up more glucose than normal cells,
so tumor cells will show up brighter in the pic-
ture because they are more active.
