Franklin Delano Roosevelt

Nathan Jefson March 28, 2012 A conservative is a man with two perfectly good legs who, however, has never learned how to walk forward. An interesting quote for someone who couldnt walk, as he was struck with polio towards the middle of his life. Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the 32nd president of the United States. He accomplished many things during his tenure as president, although he did some things that people hated on him for. Many of the services that he instituted during the depression are still around and function today including, Social Security, Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt grew up in an environment of privilege. He traveled a lot as a young boy, coincidently was conversational in German and French at a young age. His mother was the main influence in his life. His father gave him a sailboat and F.D.R named it the New Moon. He attended Groton boarding school for the first part of his schooling, for college he went to Harvard. After college he attended law school but dropped out after passing the New York State Bar exam. Franklin married Eleanor Roosevelt, and they had six children but only five lived to adulthood. But affairs and cheating tore their marriage apart, so much in fact that when he was old and his health was failing, he asked her to come back and live with him and she refused. He then got interested in politics against his mothers wishes devoted his life to it. In 1910 FDR decided to run for state senate, from the district near Hyde park in Duchess county, even though a democrat had not been elected from there since 1884. But the wealth and prestige associated with the Roosevelt name helped him get elected. He resigned from the senate in 1913, to take his place as Assistant U.S Secretary of the Navy. In 1914 he ran for state senate again, but this

time he lost by a margin of 3 to 1. From 1929 to 1932 he served as governor of New York. After this he set his sights on becoming President of the United States. He ran for president in 1932 and was elected carrying all but six states. He started off by trying to improve the economy by way of new deals. These new deals addressed things like, providing for retired workers, making new jobs, and helping people pay for insurance. Some of these deals are still around today, like, social security, The Exchange Commission, and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Franklin Delano Roosevelt helped our country in many ways. He restored the economy, created jobs, kept the war under control. The services he created are still around and function today. Even through all the troubles and trials. FDR is still one of the best known presidents today.
