2. DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS
All ORBINOX bonneted gate valves are designed for the specific service conditions of each particular case. The structural evaluation is performed using the finite elements method and CAD modelling systems. The standards used in the evaluations are: DIN 19704: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Criteria for Design and Calculation. DIN 19705: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Recommendation for Design, Construction and Erection. Standards and design criteria of the Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) for sliding gates. The body of the valve is designed as a self-resistant recipient which resistant to the design pressure without the assistance of the concrete. The recess along which the gate moves is designed so that no downstream depression zones are created. The upper and side body faces downstream are appropriately bevelled for this purpose (fig.2).

1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Bonneted gate valves are designed and manufactured in accordance with Bureau of Reclamation standards, always with a rectangular geometry, which is generally located on bottom or mid-bottom water outlet conduits, embedded in concrete with the exception of the actuator (fig.1). Its normal configuration includes a service Valve (downstream) and a safety valve (upstream) for maintenance purposes. It is an fabricated and specially robust construction, the flush bottom design of which avoids the accumulation of solids, and the absence of rubber seals avoids potential leakage over the long term due to the rapid deterioration of this kind of material.

Fig. 2

The gates are normally raised to a height where, in the maximum open position, the lower edge of the gate is slightly above the upper body face (fig.3) so that in cases of small leaks in the cylinder, the position indicators together with the hydraulic units have sufficient margin to carry out a hydraulic reset to return the gate to its maximum opening position.

3. MANUFACTURING CHARACTERISTICS
A gate valve has the following elements: Gate Body and bonnet Actuation cylinder By-pass device Venting systeme Gate:
Fig. 3

The gate is a robust part, made from either thick steel plate sheets or from an fabricated structure, with a skin plate located on the upstream position. The gate has seats on the sides, upper and lower faces. All of said seats are bronze, with the exception of the bottom one which is made of stainless steel. Bronze sliders are located on the front face of the gate which fit with the counter guides. Similarly, sliders are located for guiding the gate at the side. Wedges are also arranged on the front face in order to guarantee closure with little water pressure. The gate has a 45 bevel and has the side and top horizontal seat facing in bronze, which are correctly adjusted and machined in order to achieve the required tightness required. The lower edge of the panel is machined austenitic stainless steel and sits upon a piece of the same material located on the bottom of the valve.

The gate can be raised above the open position to the upper packing change position when required (fig.4). The sealing system in this position guarantees the water tightness of the shaft and allows the packing to be changed whilst the valve is loaded.

Body and bonnet: The body of the valve is designed as two fabricated sub units and are joined together along its vertical length using flat screwed flanges. The front body is formed by a short armoured section joined to the upstream part of the valve recess and its corresponding bonnet section (or housing chamber). It includes the stainless steel counter guides and has a series of horizontal stiffeners. The fixture of this body to the conduit armouring is done using a flat flange. The rear body includes the downstream part of the valve recess and bonnet and includes the sill, side and lintel seals along with the side guides, all of which are stainless steel, it also includes the venting inlet. Stiffening and joining to the rear armour of the conduit is done using a flat flange. The side seat facings, counter guides on the upstream faces and side guides at the bottom of the recess are made of stainless steel and designed to go along the height of the body and bonnet.

Fig. 4

Maximum admissable leakage for this type of valve is 0.08 litres per second and linear meter of joint. The aeration conduits are dimensioned is such a way that maximum depression does not exceed 2 mwc, for which air speed is limited (max. 90 m/s) with the aim of avoiding excessive load losses and air swirls in the conduits which could cause vibrations in the valve.

5. SERVICE AND LOAD CONDITIONS
The "Bureau" type sliding gate valve is designed to support water loads of up to 150 mwc and speeds in excess of 25m/s. The nominal forces for opening and closing the valve at the specified speed will be determined as the algebraic sum of the components of the forces applied, corrected by the applicable safety factors in each case.

On the upper area, the bodies end in a robust flat flange for connection with the bonnet cover. On each valve there is a position indicator be means of a stainless steel rod and an indication needle which signals the opening position of the panel on an indication strip fixed to the cylinder. The bonnet cover closes both bodies and supports the cylinder. It is designed as a robust fabricated structure, formed by a thick plate with external ribs which support the coupling flange with the cylinder support flange. The necessary parts for the compression gland of the cylinder shaft and the gate position indicator are located on it, along with a threaded outlet for the purge tap. Actuation cylinder: The actuation cylinder of the sliding valves is a double acting cylinder. It incorporates a position indicator which consists of a frame with an aluminium graduated strip and an indication needle moved by a stainless steel shaft, fixed to the panel and which moves vertically along the outside through the bonnet cover by means of a compression gland. There are three position indications on the indicator (open, closed and packing change). By-pass device: The by-pass device is comprised of a steel pipe, two gate valves and a disassembly joint.

DIN 19705: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Recommendation for Design, Construction and Erection. The valve has a high rate of discharge making it ideal for managing large water flows (fig.2).

1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Valve normally used for closing and regulating bottom and intermediate water outlets of dams and reservoirs as well as a turbine bypass valve in hydroelectric power stations. The fixed cone valve (fig. 1) discharges directly into the open air as an extension of the bottom drainage conduit which is embedded in the concrete body of the dam. This valve releases a hollow cone shaped jet (fan or spray type jet). Upon contact with the air, the energy is dissipated by pulverisation and mixing with the air. The water is normally collected downstream in a stilling pool. Cone valves are excellent regulation devices, since they can operate at any partially open position and they have practically no design load limitations. The most common use for these valves is free discharge into the atmosphere, but they can also be adapted for submerged discharges through the downstream wall of the dam. The advantages of the hollow jet valves compared with other types of valves which have the same functions are notable: they are light, simple, they have no cavitation or vibration problems, and are very easy to operate and maintain.

Fig. 2 Rate of discharge Cd.

The amplitude of the jet constitutes a certain disadvantage, in special cases, above all in channel discharges, or discharges in regions with cold winter temperatures where the areas surrounding the valve are exposed to frost and the fine dew sprayed out by the valve turns to ice. For this type of case the extension of the jet is limited using a tube with a larger diameter (hood fig.3), or by installing the valve inside a load rupture chamber which flows into a drainage channel. The use of hoods decreases the discharge rate by approximately 10%.

Fig. 3

Fixed cone valve with concentrator.

The water jet from the valve, due to its intense mix with the air, drags large volumes of air along with it. This must be closely considered when placing a hood as the jet must be sufficiently aerated through different openings on the hood.

The body incorporates a position indicator which is comprised of a frame with a graded aluminium strip. The indicator needle moves with the sleeve. There are two indication positions on the indicator (open and closed). There is an option for installing a internal position transducer (4-20mA) for remote valve regulation.

3. MANUFACTURING CHARACTERISTICS
A valve for regulation and discharge to the exterior, formed by a fixed cylindrical body upon which a cylindrical sleeve will slide concentrically to the body and lengthways. A fixed cone valve has the following elements: Body Sleeve or shutter Drive cylinders Body: The body of the valve is formed by a stainless steel shell which is machined on the outer side, with internal radial carbon steel ribs welded on the shaft of the valve to a pipe which extends downstream where it is welded with the dispersion cone vertex. The visible parts of the radial ribs are covered in bronze applied by welding and subsequent machining, and are flush with the external diameter of the tube which forms the body. The valve has a drilled flange in accordance with standards DIN (PN 10, PN16) and AWWA C207 Class "D" at the upstream end. Around the base of the dispersion cone is the housing for the EPDM seat which is fixed to the body by a steel ring and stainless steel screws. The outer edges of the sleeve will sit on this joint in the fully closed position. Sleeve: The sleeve consists of a steel cylinder which has internal stainless steel rings that act as rollers and slide over the uncovered part of the ribs on the main body, in such a way that the sliding action is always between stainless steel and bronze. On the upstream part of the sleeve there is a watertight compression gland which slides on the machined stainless steel body of the valve. The contact surface with the watertight joint is made from stainless steel. The ends of the cylinder shafts are joined to the sleeve. If the valve has a fixed hood (for submerged discharge), the sleeve is manufactured in stainless steel and is machined on the outside. The fixed hood, normally positioned in concrete, has a system of watertight joints against which the machined outer part of the sleeve will slide. Drive Cylinders: The standard valve actuation is obtained from two parallel hydraulic cylinders, mounted horizontally. They are double acting cylinders, with stainless steel shafts, treated with hard chrome. The normal operation pressure is between 60 and 120 Bar.

4. ACTUATORS
This gate can be actuated manually, electrically and hydraulically (fig.4), although the application usually recommended is the hydraulic actuator due to simplicity and high stresses required.

Fig. 4 Actuators.

The hydraulic unit will normally be equipped with a double motor pump and an emergency manual pump. Nitrogen accumulators can be used for emergency purposes. The electrical cabinet has a PLC for programming the opening and closing maneouvres along with further maneouvres specific to each case.

this can be clearly noticed as it produces intense sounds and pipes will vibrate. For this reason, the butterfly valves must not be used for partial aperture in a permanent manner.

1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Butterfly valves constitute one of the most simple, robust and economical ways of managing flows in inlet and outlet conduits (fig.1). Butterfly valves are used for emergency functions, and although in some exceptions, mainly with small diameter valves, they have been used to regulate flow, this operation method is not recommended due to the high levels of turbulence, vibration and possible cavitations which may occur on the valve or downstream pipes. The main use for these valves is in pressurized conduits at hydro-power plants electrical plants, inlets and outlets, and for closures in the event of emergency. In the majority of cases, butterfly valves are comprised of a steel box, which is a cylindrical pipe with the same internal diameter as the conduit on which it is installed. The advantages are mainly a result of the bi-eccentric closure geometry, which largely eliminates joint-seat friction, and makes the water flow seal the valve. It provides a continuous seal around the complete circumference and its robust design allows opening and closure in high heads.

Fig. 1

The butterfly seals against the seat in the body with a rubber strip that is placed around the perimeter of the disc. The rotation shafts (bi-eccentric) remain outside of the central plane of the disc (fig.2), in order to prevent interference with the rubber seals in these zones.

2. DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS
All ORBINOX butterfly valves are designed for the specific service conditions of each particular case. The structural evaluation is performed using the finite elements method and CAD modelling systems. Standards and criteria used for design and testing: DIN 19704: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Criteria for Design and Calculation. DIN 19705: Hydraulic Steel Structures. Recommendation for Design, Construction and Erection. AWWA C-504-80. AWWA M49 Butterfly valves: Torque Head Loss and Cavitation Analysis. The closure mechanism is a circular body, with a hydrodynamic lengthway section to create minimum flow disturbance and pressure drop. The butterfly valve is not very hydrodynamic in form when operating at partial aperture. Downstream, a separation zone is formed where vibrations, swirls and cavitation may occur,
Fig. 2

The rotation tendency is to close after a certain deviation of the open position, due to the distribution of pressures caused by the flow together with the bi-eccentricity of the shaft (fig.3). This means that valves of this type can be closed even without the assistance of servo-motors, or in cases of power supply failure, by manual operation, which is extremely advantageous as these valves are used as closure mechanisms in emergency situations.

produced by the distribution of hydrodynamic pressures in the butterfly (dynamic torque). This torque is magnified if the valve is larger, and if the fluid speed is higher. For this reason, on valves of a large size, a technical viability study is required. See the figure where the required correction of valve robustness for the increase in speed. (Fig. 3)

Fig. 3

The actuation method which is usually used to operate these valves is an oil servo motor and counterweight system. This system uses the force of gravity of a weight outside the valve, joined to the rotation shaft of the disc by a mechanical arm. The arm is also joined to the oil servomotor which allows the valve to be opened, this in turn hydraulically or mechanically locks into the completely open position, which is the highest counterweight position. The valve closure process begins by freeing the counterweight. The closure time can be adjusted at will by regulating the oil flow of the servomotor cylinder, preventing water hammer in the pipe. It is also possible to operate the valve with an electromechanical actuator. Manual actuation may also be carried out in cases of power failure. When designing the operating mechanism of the valves, the following two scenarios must be considered: 1. Intake conduits with relatively low speeds (< 5m/s) and high pressures: This is the case with pressurized conduits in turbines, where these valves are mainly applied as emergency devices, the resulting torque on the disc shaft will be the main force needed to overcome the friction forces on the shafts and seals; in this case, the torque from the distribution of hydrodynamic pressure on the disc will be minimal. 2. Bottom and general discharges in high speed conduits in which the valves must be manoeuvred with flow, under free discharge conditions: The torque needed to overcome the forces of friction on the shafts and seals is small in comparison with the torque

Fig. 4 Speed - pressure curves.

3. MANUFACTURING CHARACTERISTICS
A butterfly valve has the following elements: Body Disc Shaft Actuation cylinder By-pass device Venting system Body: The body is formed by a shell with two flanges on the ends. The outer part is reinforced with ribs welded both to the shell and the flanges. The complete unit is normally manufactured in carbon steel S275JR. The closure seat is comprised of a stainless steel ring in AISI304 welded to the inside of the shell. The shaft housings are manufactured by welding highly resistant parts to the shell which then transfer radial loads to the rest of the body. After the welding process, the stabilisation process takes places along with the subsequent final machining.

Venting system: The air adduction system normally consists of one or various dual function air relief valves, protected by their respective gate valves, joined to the main pipe downstream of the butterfly. For large and/or high pressure valves, the main disc is reinforced with another parallel plate joined by ribs running lengthways in the direction of the water, forming a "biplane" type structure which is both very robust and hydrodynamic. The main deep disc is machined at the end in order to house the special profile of the EPDM watertight seal. This seal is held by a ring secured with a stainless steel screw.

4. ACTUATORS
This valve can be actuated manually (fig.6), electrically (fig.7) and hydraulically (fig.8), although the application usually selected is the hydraulic actuator due to the high stresses required. The hydraulic actuator may be self-contained (fig. 8) or with the cylinder to the floor for increased forces (fig.1). The butterfly is opened by introducing pressurised oil in one of the chambers of the hydraulic cylinder. The closure occurs by action of the counterweight, which is joined to the shaft by a lever. On releasing oil from the cylinder, the counterweight lowers closing the disc. The cylinder acts as a hydraulic absorber because when it controls the flow of released oil, the closure speed is controlled thus fast at most of its stroke to avoid water hammer and slow at the end to avoid final slam in the pipe. The unit is dimensioned in order to be able to open and close in high head waters. By-pass device: The by-pass device is comprised of a steel pipe, and two gate valves with external spindel in stainless steel and a disassembly carriage. Thus allowing pressures upstream and downstream of the butterfly to be balanced.

The electrical cabinet has a PLC for programming the opening, closing and emergency closing manoeuvres along with further manoeuvres specific to each case.

1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Tainter type radial gates are gates with a pivoting section which be located in channels and dam spillways either as control elements for water levels or as regulation and discharge elements in deepwater outlets of dams. It is a unit formed by a mechanically welded curved sector shaped gate which closes with elastomer profiles attached to the gate with fixed parts embedded in the concrete. The cylindrical surface or gate is concentrical to the support shafts, so that the thrust produced by the water will pass through them; this method therefore only needs a small amount of movement to raise or lower the gate. The loads to be moved include the weight of the gate, the friction resistance between the side closures, the piers and the shaft friction resistance. Its main advantages are: Lifting force is considerably less Regulation capacity Safe and simple operation and rapid lifting

Consult our technicians about special overspills and/or higher water heads.

The gate is guided at the side by a system of rollers which are supported along their route on the fixed side parts. Arms: The arms joined to the gate are formed by mechanically welded structures and transmit the stresses to the concrete through maintenance free spherical bearings. The bearings have large-sized bolts through which the thrust is transmitted to the base plate on the concrete. Base plates are sized in order to uniformly distribute pressure to the concrete, without said pressures resulting excessive. Fixed parts: Water tightness on three sides (sides and bottom) is achieved with special profiles of EPDM elastomer (Ethylene-propylene) located on the gate. These profiles are secured using small metal plates and stainless steel screws. Both the side and lower closure surfaces are embedded in the concrete and are made of stainless steel AISI 304.

1. GENERAL DESCRIPTION
Slide roller gates (fig. 1 and 2) are normally used to shut of large openings and high water loads. They are commonly used as protection mechanisms at hydraulic power stations where they can also be used as a regulation mechanism for the turbine coupling with the network (fig.2). It is a gate formed by a strong reinforced fabricated structure, for which the guiding system works using a side roller system which reduces the gate's operation loads.

Gate: Flat fabricated structure covered on its high pressure side by a skin plate adequately reinforced with beams. Normally both the skin plate and the beams will be made of carbon steel. At the side of the gate a roller system is installed on stainless steel shafts which enable the gate to be guided throughout its manoeuvres thus reducing operational loads. The number of rollers will depend on the dimensions of the gate and the loads to be supported. It also has a side guiding system which may have sliding or auxiliary rollers. At the top of the panel is the large-sized shaft tie. The design of the gate is calculated for correct operation under extreme service conditions.

The bed is also placed on a concrete profile with a stainless steel surface for the lower seal. All steel surfaces of the gate have adequate anti-corrosion protection for the service conditions. By-pass: Although the roller gates are dimensioned to operate under the most unfavourable of conditions, there is the option of installing a by-pass incorporated in the gate panel which will act with the main actuator and which will enable the gate to be opened with balanced loads.

The gate water tightness is obtained through contact of elastomer profile seals with the seat. The seals are secured to the gate with stainless steel plates and screws and the seat, also made of stainless steel, is embedded in the concrete. All steel gates surfaces have an appropriate anti-corrosion protection for the service conditions.

Fixed parts: The fixed parts are formed by two side profiles of laminate steel embedded in the concrete which form vertical supports serving as a guide for the rollers and which extend to the operation floor level. These supports house the front and side pressure runways and the counter pressure runways and are appropriately reinforced in order to transmit loads to the concrete. The seal side and at the bottom of these profiles have stainless steel plates on the sides to serve as a contact surface with the elastomer in the seal position. These side plates will be placed right up to the maximum opening position of the gate in order for the watertight seals to slide along them. In civil works a profile with a stainless steel plate will be concreted and will form the top seating face of the gate to provide water tightness for the upper seal.

The actuator operations are usually carried out by a double acting hydraulic cylinder with stainless steel chrome plated shaft. In the case of roller gates for protection purposes at hydraulic power stations, the actuator is commonly a single acting hydraulic cylinder with shock absorption on the final section where the gate is designed to close by force of gravity, adding ballast if necessary against passage flow. In both cases it has a mechanical position indicator device. In cases where there is a large distance between the operation floor and the gates, a mechanical link system is used to join the two. The hydraulic operation unit has an oil tank with a double motor pump (one for emergency purposes) and a manual emergency pump. The system is equipped with the necessary safety devices to prevent gate position losses. The electrical operation cabinet is equipped with a PLC for programming opening and closure manoeuvres. It has the necessary buttons and indicators for controlling the gate operations.
