Good evening, Im writing in connection with my recent stay at the Four Seasons in London. Unfortunately, I spent three miserable nights at your hotel from April 26 29, 2010. When I arrived in London, there was an unexpected snowstorm. Although the temperatures were really low, there was no heat in my room. Brazil considers bulletproofing schools

Authorities in Rio de Janeiro are under pressure to bulletproof schools in slum areas, after an 11-year-old boy was killed by a stray bullet during a maths lesson. According to local reports, city authorities are studying plans to introduce stronger walls and bulletproof windows in some schools. They want to protect an estimated 100,000 students and 5,000 teachers who study and work in at-risk areas. They follow the fatal shooting of Wesley Gilbert de Andrade, an 11-year-old student who was shot through the heart by a stray bullet while inside his primary school on Friday. The shooting happened during a police operation against drug gangs in slums near the school. Speaking to the O Dia newspaper, Rios education secretary, Claudia Costin, said authorities were considering a number of things to improve security, including bulletproofing. I will talk to the schools staff to see if this [bulletproofing] might be useful, Costin said. If they think it is a good idea, yes, we will do it. Although politicians have praised a new pacification plan, which has driven drug gangs from 11 shanty towns, most of Rios 1,000 slums are still controlled by armed gangs and vigilante groups. Edna Felix, a director of Rios teachers union, said many schools urgently needed bulletproofing and asked for the immediate end to police operations during school hours. When there is a confrontation, as soon as we hear the first shot, we have to leave the classroom, run to the corridor, duck, try and get the children out of the way, said Felix, a primary school teacher in the notorious Morro dos Macacos slum who has taught in some of Rio's most deprived areas in the last 30 years. The kids get very scared, they cry. Its not just the fear of what might happen to them inside the school but also because they have family members outside in the community. Many of the children have relatives who are involved in drug trafficking and get scared something will happen to them."

Fugitives Facebook Habit Leads To Arrest

Some people are good at being fugitives from the police. They stay at home, they go out in disguise or even create a new identity. Others are not so successful. Take the case of Maxi Sopo, a 26-year-old criminal who was in hiding in Mexico from the US police. He not only used his Facebook page to tell his friends about the fun he was having, but also made the error of adding a former justice department official to his list of friends. In status updates from Cancun, where he was on the run from charges of bank fraud, Sopo said he was living in paradise in Mexico and loving it. Sopo, who arrived in the US from Cameroon in 2003, made money by selling roses in Seattle nightclubs until, according to prosecutors, he moved on to bank fraud. But he soon learnt that police were investigating him and drove a rented car to Mexico in February. Investigators looked at social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace but they could find no sign of him at first and could not see his location in Mexico. Several months later, a secret service agent checked Facebook again and suddenly found Maxi Sopo. His photo showed him partying in front of a backdrop with BMW and Courvoisier cognac logos on it. Although Sopos profile was set to private, his list of friends was not. Assistant US Attorney, Michael Scoville, who helped to find Sopo, began to look through the list. He was surprised that one friend was linked to the Mexican justice department. Scoville immediately sent a message requesting a phone call. We figured this was a person we could probably trust to keep our inquire discreet, Scoville said. The official told Scoville he had met Sopo in Cancuns nightclubs a few times. He learned where Sopo was living and passed the information back to Scoville, who informed the Mexican police. They arrested Sopo last month. If convicted of fraud, Sopo could go to prison for up to 30 years. Plenty of time to update a Facebook page.
