One step
greener cities
better business
for a better world
All over the world urban areas are growing and an increasing number of people are dependent on efficient daily transportation. Impact on the environment becomes increasingly important and the automotive industry has a significant role to play. Environmental performance is no longer considered a soft issue. For public transport operators it is a means of competition. Governments, cities and authorities are becoming increasingly clear in their requirements for sustainable city traffic, and those operators who can respond to this definitely gain the upper hand in their business process. At Volvo we took on this challenge many years ago. We are able to act and improve in many areas. Hybrid technology constitutes a major step towards reducing the use of fossil fuels, and we can present a solid track record from years of commercial operation. Volvo strives for thorough long-term sustainability. We are convinced that buses are the best way to offer efficient public transport. Thats why we constantly seek ways and means of enhancement. Volvo Buses. Driving quality of life.

A Volvo is reliable Our quality reputation is solid and our new body concept is another step towards perfection. The principle of best-choice materials means that we use both steel and aluminium in the structure. Aluminium is corrosion-resistant, which is an important factor for the expected service life of the bus. There is also an environmental upside since as much as 90% of the aluminium structure can be recycled. World-class drivers compartment The drivers environment is one of the best available. Clear and logical layout of instruments and controls, superb visibility and a seat with very generous adjustment range all contribute to the world-class ergonomics. Its easy to find the ideal driving position, regardless of the drivers height, build or personal preferences.
same amount. And when it comes to nitrogen oxides and particles the reduction is even greater; up to 50% compared to the average Euro 5 diesel bus. The reason why Volvo can present better figures than others is no secret. The solution itself, the parallel hybrid, is highly efficient, the I-Shift gearbox provides optimised conditions, and we keep the batteries in the best possible condition by providing both cooling and heating.
Silent boarding and take-off Your passengers will benefit from hybrid technology as well. Especially when waiting at the bus stop. The Volvo 7900 Hybrid can take off silently with the diesel engine switched off, thanks to electrically powered auxiliaries. And no idling means zero tailpipe emissions.
Intelligent energy recovery Volvo has a unique principle for recovery of braking energy, using the intelligent functions of the Volvo I-SAM. Through close monitoring and a specially developed algorithm these currents can be controlled and optimised to extend battery life.
Electrical auxiliaries Many systems in a bus require continuous power supply. Normally this comes from the engine via mechanical drive. In the Volvo 7900 Hybrid these systems are electrically powered, which means that the bus is fully operational even when the diesel engine is switched off.
New body concept The new body concept is shared with the rest of the Volvo 7900 range and with the Volvo 8900. This means that your entire fleet can benefit from 70% parts commonality. Add to that the extended warranties and simplified repair methods; much of the minor damage that frequently occurs in city traffic can be repaired without welding.
reliability
Some say that hybrid technology is a solution for the future. True, but not the whole truth. Volvo hybrids roam the streets of many cities the world over. Our solution presents the best results over a wide range of applications from extreme high-density city centres to traffic in smaller cities and suburbs. The Volvo hybrid system is unique in many ways; technically and in terms of performance and reliability.
Parallel hybrid The solution means that the diesel engine and I-SAM electric motor work together under optimised conditions. The power management system decides which power source should be engaged, and to what extent, at every given moment. And, as opposed to many other solutions, should a failure disable the electrical propulsion system, the bus can still run on the diesel engine alone.

figures
Drivers compartment The drivers environment is spacious, effectively sound-insulated and presents world-class ergonomics. It features easy-to-view instruments and an adjustable steering wheel with attached control satellites. Structure Volvos new body concept is built on the principle of best choice materials. The use of aluminium and our patented jointing method helps create a strong, corrosion-resistant and easy-to-maintain bus with low weight and a long service life. Passenger environment and climate control Spacious, comfortable and safe passenger environment with a controlled climate and a low noise level. A range of options is available, including a fully automatic and powerful ventilation system with separate climate controls for the driver. Engine Volvo D5F215 (161 kW/800 Nm) + electric motor (120 kW/800 Nm). The diesel engine meets Euro 5 and EEV standards using SCR technology. Also available with DPF as option. Transmission Volvo I-Shift 12-speed automated gearshift system. Rear axle Portal, double reduction rear axle with optimised ratios for best performance within each application area. Suspension Low floor, front suspension with beam axle. Electronically controlled air suspension with kneeling function available. Brakes Volvo electronically controlled disc brakes (EBS). Brake Blending function (all). The electric motor functions as a retarder and recovers braking energy. Doors Double doors at all positions. Layouts 2+2+0 or 2+2+2. Gross weight Max gross weight 19.029.6 tonnes.

The diesel engine starts when the electric motor has brought the bus up to speed. The two power sources then work in tandem, with the electric motors impressive low-rev properties adding to the diesel engines superior pulling power at higher revs.
Customer Testimonials
Comments about our previous model, the Volvo 7700 Hybrid. Already from the start we could see savings of 35 % in city traffic, and close to 25 % in intercity traffic, compared to our estimate of 20 %. Dominik Steiner, owner of Steinerbus AG, sub-contractor of PostAuto. Most hybrid buses run in city traffic. But we wanted to find a solution also for intercity operations. Volvos parallel hybrid seemed to be the right choice. Werner Blatter, member of the management team of PostAuto, Switzerlands leading bus operator. Its an image matter for the the company but its not a choice by chance, its by calculation. We wanted to make a good investment and do something good for the planet. Marc Sales, Owner, Sales-Lentz, Luxemburg. I love this bus. Tanja Reed, bus driver, Nettbuss, Trondheim Norway. Operators tell us that the hybrid bus presents a higher uptime and is even more reliable than the corresponding diesel bus. Edward Jobson, Prof. Environmental director, Volvo Bus Corporation.
