Name: ___________________________ Debate: The Catcher in the Rye

In this debate, you will discuss and argue your answer to the following question: Is Holden Caulfield a phony? You and your team must establish, detail, and defend your argument on this subject. To do this, you will need to take the following steps: 1) Make a list of three major points that will best support your argument. 2) Find specific moments from the text to support each of these points (specific quotes, not just general ideas or summaries). 3) Explain how each quote proves what you say it proves.

You will also need to anticipate counter-arguments you may face. What moments from the book may the opposing team use to disprove your argument? How will you rebut their arguments? (Nuhuh is not a strong rebuttal strategy, and neither is ignoring the other teams arguments).

TEAM JOBS Each teammate will take on one of the following positions: 1) First Speaker (introduces your arguments and your three main points with quotations and explanations) 2) Primary Researcher(s) (responsible for finding the necessary and relevant quotations supporting your argument and making notes for the speaker) 3) Rebuttal Researcher(s) (responsible for anticipating the oppositions arguments and finding quotations to counter-act these points) 4) Second Speaker (rebuttal): addresses the oppositions arguments and discusses quotations and logic that rebut these arguments

DEBATE FORMAT (the debate will be held during your next English class) 1) First Speaker remarks (3 minutes each, order determined by coin flip). During this time, researchers must take notes for rebuttal preparation. 2) Break for rebuttal preparation (5 m) 3) Second Speaker rebuttal (3 minutes each, reversed order of First Speaker remarks) 4) Teachers Judgment, Handshakes, and Closure (2-4 m)
