THE YEAR OF FAITH

OCTOBER 2012 - NOVEMBER 2013

"They called the Church together and reported what God had done with them and how he had opened the door of faith..." (Acts 14:27).
In the Acts of the Apostles, we learn that God has opened the door of faith for the early Church. But did you know that God has opened the door of faith for each one us and he invites us to step through the threshold into a deeper relationship with him. The upcoming Year of Faith is an opportunity for every Catholic to turn towards Jesus Christ, encounter him in the Sacraments, especially the Eucharist and rediscover the Faith and Church. With his Apostolic Letter of October 11, 2011,Porta Fidei (Door of Faith) , Pope Benedict XVI declared that a "Year of Faith" which began on October 11, 2012 and will conclude on November 24, 2013. October 11, 2012, the first day of the Year of Faith, was the fiftieth anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council... (Vatican II) the feast of Blessed John XXIII who conceived and convened the Vatican II and also the twentieth anniversary of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. During the Year of Faith, Catholics are asked to study and reflect on the documents of Vatican II and the catechism so that they may deepen their knowledge of the faith. The upcoming Year of Faith is a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world (Porta Fidei 6). In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. The Door of Faith is opened at ones baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.

"The 'door of faith' (Acts14:27) is always open for us, ushering us into the life of communion with God and offering entry into his Church."
---Pope Benedict XVI, Apostolic Letter Porta Fidei for the Indiction of the Year of Faith.

What is the Year of Faith?

At certain times in the history of the Church, popes have called upon the faithful to dedicate themselves to deepening their understanding of a particular aspect of the faith. In 1967, Pope Paul VI announced a Year of Faith commemorating the 19th centenary of the martyrdom of Sts. Peter and Paul. The 1967 Year of Faith called upon the Church to recall the supreme act of witness by these two saints so that their martyrdom might inspire the present day Church to collectively and individually make a sincere profession of faith. The upcoming Year of Faith declared by Pope Benedict XVI is a summons to an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the One Savior of the world (Porta fidei 6). In other words, the Year of Faith is an opportunity for Catholics to experience a conversion to turn back to Jesus and enter into a deeper relationship with him. The pope has described this conversion as opening the door of faith (see Acts 14:27). The door of faith is opened at ones baptism, but during this year Catholics are called to open it again, walk through it and rediscover and renew their relationship with Christ and his Church.

The Year of Faith begins in October 2012 with a Synod on New Evangelization.

What is a synod?

A synod of bishops is a gathering of bishops, selected from different areas of the world, who meet with the pope to discuss questions pertaining to the activity of the Church in the world. This meeting of bishops helps to foster a closer unity between the bishops and the pope, and provides counsel to the pope. Pope Benedict XVI has situated the Synod on the New Evangelization (October 7-28) at the beginning of the Year of Faith (October 11).

How are Year of Faith and New Evangelization linked?

The New Evangelization is a call to each Catholic to deepen his or her own faith, have confidence in the Gospel, and possess a willingness to share the Gospel. The New Evangelization is first and foremost a personal encounter with Jesus Christ; it is an invitation to deepen ones relationship with Christ. It is also a call to each person to share his or her faith with others. The Year of Faith, just like the New Evangelization, calls Catholics to conversion in order to deepen their relationship with Christ and to share it with others.

Liturgy of the Word for Children, Gather the Children, 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass Were you curious about Gather the Children? Wondering what age group the liturgy is geared? Questioning whether you should you go with your child? Here are some answers! Children between the school ages of kindergarten and fifth grade are called forth by the presider at the beginning of Mass, then blessed. They follow the Minister of the Word to the chapel, where they sing and hear the reading in age appropriate language. The children return to the church for the beginning of the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Parents are always welcome, but do not have to go with their kindergartners through fifth graders. Preschoolers are welcome, too, but they must be accompanied by a parent. Questions? You can contact Kara Ladd, Director, Gather the Children, 630-876-4534 (call or text), kedrok99@att.net

Jesus showed through both his teachings and example that true greatness in Gods Kingdom comes through humbly serving the needs of others. Jesus demonstrated this clearly and definitely by freely offering his life for the sake of our salvation. As Good Stewards our lives are transformed. Let us follow our Lords example so that we might be found worthy of the Kingdom.

Thank you! The Council of Catholic Women would like to acknowledge all those who have baked, shopped, donated items and worked at our recent Holiday Fair. It was a great success and we appreciate the wonderful turn out after the Masses. Our parishioners helped CCW raise funds for charitable causes and supported parishioners businesses as well.

Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizens

The moral imperative to respond to the basic needs of our neighbors - such as food, shelter, health care, education, and meaningful work - is universally binding on our conscience - along with these imperatives to serve the poor and those in need is the call to respect all life, from the womb to the tomb. Abortion, euthanasia, death penalty, bigotry are all forms of violence against human life. Catholics should seek the best methods to respond to these needs. Those who support only some of these needs, yet at the same time gloss over their support of other actions give in to intrinsically evil actions and do not demonstrate a conscience well-formed by Catholic/Christian faith or human reason.

Whether you will be hospitalized for a few days or whether your surgery is same-day surgery, give one of our priests a call PRIOR to your surgery, so that anointing can be given at a time when you are less stressed. Ask one of the priests following Mass, or call the parish office at 630-668-0918, ext. 600, and set a time to come in BEFORE your surgery for anointing.

Our priests are always available to make hospital visits. However, you or a family member must notify the St. Johns parish office of the confinement in the hospital. Also, remind the hospital that the name of the patient must be shown on the visitation sheet which is given to the priest when he makes his calls. We want to make sure our parishioners needs and requests are met, so please remember this when entering the hospital.
