CHESS ATTACK PROJECT I. II. III. IV. V.

Purpose Components Instructions Grading Appendix Purpose To examine the Middle Ages throughout the world, and understand the concept of national identity, through the use of chess (the smaller version of chess known as Chess Attack). Components Students will complete the following parts of this project: 1. Identification of 16 chess pieces, with a report consisting of brief histories for each as well as summaries of the history and geography of the nation itself. 2. Construction and proper labeling/decoration of 10 chess pieces, using the template provided. 3. Design and illustration of a map of their heros kingdom, superimposed on a 3 x 5 grid. 4. A brief description and analysis of the sources used to complete the assignment. Instructions 1. Identity selection: students should carefully choose to construct their project around a national hero, taken from the rough timeframe of the years 500-1500. Using ones own heritage as a basis for this project is recommended, but not required. 2. After choosing the initial identity, students will complete an organizational chart which outlines how they have chosen to select the identities of all 16 pieces, using the chart listed as a separate page (appendix A). Students should be sure that all additional identities appropriately relate to their initial choice, and are from the same time period. Depending on their choice of national hero, students should use the following categories for their pieces: King Queen Bishop Knight Castle Pawn Ruling monarch during the lifetime of your hero Queen or royal consort of the chosen king Important religious officials or figures (popes, bishops, saints, imams, etc.) Knights, military leaders, generals, military advisors, famous warriors, successors, etc. The most important or influential castles during the lifetime of your hero The 8 most important cities or towns in your heros nation; regions may be used instead

3. Students will then construct a map, using the template (appendix B), of their nation, which will be superimposed over a 3 x 5 grid. Students should include the following on their map, handdrawn neatly in ink: - Capital city - Selected castles - Selected cities/towns/regions - Neighboring kingdoms/nations - Important bodies of water or other geographical features

IMPORTANT NOTICE: BEFORE THE NEXT STEP (SHADING OF SQUARES), MAKE SEVERAL COPIES OF YOUR MAP, AND KEEP YOUR MASTER COPY WITHOUT SHADING! After the map has been copied, students should then shade in their chessboard parts using the two different alternating patterns of white (white) and black (national color). Two boards need to be made so that all students can link up their Chess Attack boards with any other student from the cluster. 4. Students are required to provide written material to supplement their choices, in the form of a brief report. An outline of the report is given below: I. II. III. IV. National Hero (one paragraph) History of Nation (one paragraph) Geography of Nation (one paragraph) Historical Description/Reason for Choice of Pieces (bulleted) A. King D. Knights B. Queen E. Castles C. Bishops F. Pawns Source Analysis (students will write a one paragraph description of their research, including how they found their information, and what their most useful sources were)

5. Game Pieces: Students will use a template/handout to construct their game pieces out of paper. Pieces need to be customized and labeled to reflect both their identities and nationalities, including names, pictures, and national color/colors.
