Giving thanks.

For many, just the word November conjures up thoughts of Thanksgiving Day. One of the best things about this holiday, besides the family togetherness, is that it forces us to take a day to stop and think about all of the good in our lives. The commercialism isnt too overwhelming, theres no pressure to buy gifts to show our gratitude and, if youre not the one cooking for a houseful, it can be a restful, peaceful day in an otherwise hectic world. We all have many things to be thankful for, though some of us are much better at acknowledging and expressing that gratitude. One thing I think many of us who enjoy good health often overlook is just that, our health. Unless weve had a medical issue of our own or in our family, it can be easy to take our health for granted. Over the years, Ive had the privilege of reading many articles from business owners who have devoted their lives to sharing with others services or products that cured them of their ills. Now they know how to show their gratitude! Lets consider showing our appreciation for good health by lending our attention to this months national awareness conditions, including: Alzheimers disease, epilepsy and stomach cancer. Its an opportunity to take action by becoming an advocate or volunteer, making a donation or maybe just being more supportive of those not as fortunate with their health. I am happy to share some wonderful articles with you this month. Tina Bensman shares her ideas for making the holidays more pleasant if you have some uncomfortable family get-togethers ahead. Cecilia Farran educates us about the workings of the Mayan calendar and some energetic electromagnetic shifts that are taking place in our world. Doug Brown tells us why Tai Chi might be right for us and about the many benefits enjoyed by the millions who practice it. And, theres much more, so please read on!

Best wishes to all of you and your families as you continue to make healthy choices in your lives. Please take some time to express your gratitude for at least one good thing this Thanksgiving. I appreciate all of you who read and contribute to this bountiful publication! In health and happiness,

Do you have a comment or question about something you read in Nature's Pathways? Is there a story you'd like to read? How about something you didn't like as much? Whatever your opinion, we want to know! Please e-mail Jackie at jpeters@naturespathways.com or info@naturespathways.com. Thanks for reading!

our heating and cooling system keeps you comfortable by pushing heated or cooled air through your air ducts and into your home. Over time, air ducts get dirty and contribute to poor indoor air quality. According to the EPA, the air you breathe in your home may

be 2-5 times more polluted, or even 100 times more polluted, than the air outside.1 If you live in a major metropolitan area, this is quite a statement. Dust, pet dander, smoke, molds, fungi and bacteria circulate through the homes heating and cooling system and accumulate on the interior surfaces of our ducts. The American Lung Association indicates that poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to the development of infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases like asthma. In addition, it can cause headaches, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea and fatigue. People who already have lung disease are at greater risk.2 Children are particularly susceptible to poor indoor air quality; the American Lung Association recommends annual professional duct cleaning for asthmatic children.3 Professionally cleaning your ducts removes these contaminants from your airstream to help you breathe better. Contaminants building up in your heating and cooling system can reduce its efficiency by as much as 21%. Most of your energy bills probably go toward heating and cooling your home, so this waste of energy can have a very real

impact on your utility bills. Save money every month and help conserve the Earths resources by keeping your heating and cooling system clean. Just like your car, your heating and cooling system needs periodic maintenance so that it can keep taking care of you. In 9 out of 10 cases, failures in these systems are caused by the accumulation of dust and dirt. Neglecting your system can prematurely age your furnace, air conditioner and other components. Repairs for poorly maintained systems typically average around $500, with replacements costing $3,000 or more. Save money and help your system keep you comfortable by keeping it clean!

patent. This not only changes its structure, but also its effect on the body. In some cases, they do not respond to the enzymes that render them inactive after they complete their goal and they continue to function even when unwanted. This can lead to more complicated problems related to a hormonal imbalance estrogen dominance. In contrast, natural hormones are identical to those produced by the body. All the necessary enzymes and cofactors that are available in the human body make the natural hormones work safely and efficiently. Most women are led to believe that the options regarding their sexual health are limited and in too many cases, conventional medicine doctors are unaware or not willing to inform them of options outside conventional approaches. Today, synthetic estrogen is the primary hormone used to treat PMS and menopausal complaints and many symptoms can actually be exacerbated by this approach. Depression, blood sugar imbalances, water retention, weight problems, headaches, loss of libido, breast tenderness, skin problems, insomnia, liver weaknesses, fibroids, osteoporosis, and even digestive problems can all be side

effects of estrogen replacement. Many women have chosen to circumvent much of the medical experimentation they have encountered and avoid the side effects by turning to the alternatives of natural progesterone cream. When used properly, these products can be extremely beneficial. Progesterone is a structural hormone that can change its form to become other hormones. Because of this unique quality, it can be converted and utilized by the body to the point of depletion. Often this is primarily due to stress: physical, mental or emotional. One of progesterones major capabilities is to convert to the adrenal stress hormone called cortisol. When progesterone converts to cortisol, it depletes overall progesterone levels causing a multitude of health problems. Progesterone is unique in that it acts as a precursor to most steroid functions, which help regulate blood sugar, proper nerve conduction and, most importantly, works in ratio to estrogen. The proper ratio in relation to estrogen is key to hormonal health. The amount of progesterone present in creams, as well as other active ingredients, delivery methods and cost, varies from brand to brand. These factors are important because without proper cofactors, the cream will be of little value to the user. Most of the progesterone creams available today use an inexpensive oil (fat-soluble) cosmetic base, rather than the more effective liposome compound. This can cause problems, since the oil-based compounds have a tendency to stay in the skin, releasing their payload for an extended and unpredictable period of time. Due to this ongoing release into the bloodstream, the levels can remain high, causing additional imbalances. Studies have shown the most effective type of delivery for progesterone cream is known as a Transdermal Liposome Delivery System (TLDS). Liposomes are microscopic lipid (water-insoluble fat) globules

that are made of a natural material similar to that of the cell membrane. This allows them to easily pass into the target cell and deposit their payload. When applied to the skin, they penetrate quickly through the tissue, are picked up by the capillaries and transported through the bloodstream. The major advantage to this form of delivery is that its predictable. The time it takes to pass into the cells and be utilized is easily calculated and has a relatively short clearance time. The use of natural progesterone or any type of hormone therapy should always be under the guidance of a qualified health professional. Although no side effects or toxicity have ever been reported from high doses, it is possible to upset the proper ratios necessary for progesterone and its related hormones to function properly. Progesterone may not be the answer for everyone, but it is certainly something to consider. If you feel you have a hormonal imbalance, contact an experienced health care professional that can educate you on your best options.

The hidden danger of NSAiDS: joint damage! ..................................................................

by Dr. reek
ave you ever wondered why so many people are getting joint replacements? Is it lack of exercise, too much exercise, weight gain or poor nutrition? Maybe not. The real answer may be easier to understand: In countries where people dont take NSAIDS (non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs) such as Aleve, Advil and aspirin the occurrence of joint deterioration and replacement is almost nonexistent. Research now shows that NSAIDS triple the amount of joint deterioration a 300% increase!1 And just two years of NSAIDS use will increase your chances of hip replacement by 50%.2 The LINK study in England was so conclusive about NSAIDS causing accelerated joint damage, they stopped the study early. They had to save participants unneeded joint damage, and ultimately replacement. By the third year, the study actually showed a doubling of joint replacements for participants on NSAIDS.3 There are literally hundreds of research reports on this topic. As a major health concern for the public, why isnt this type of information big news? Unfortunately, the same media that receives huge advertising accounts from the big pharmaceutical companies is responsible for bringing out the truth about the very drugs they promote. As a business, they weigh their options of lost revenue vs. full disclosure. Caveat emptor; let the buyer beware rules the day, and many suffer as a result.

in countries where people dont take NSAiDS such as Aleve, Advil and aspirin the occurrence of joint deterioration and replacement is almost nonexistent.

Unfortunately, most doctors rely on information that the drug companies provide, including when it is conventional medicine. However, on closer look, many of the drugs coming into our system were not approved or designed for the prescribed conditions. They become catch-all cross-over medication powered by the profit motives of the major pharmaceutical companies. This problem often leads to another complication that is then to be remedied by another drug. This endless cycle leaves us at the mercy of Big Pharma, a notorious industry that weighs profit vs. risk, wrought with deception and over-reaching on drug benefits and uses.4 Medical doctors are very well educated in disease care, and their main mode of treatment for this is prescription pharmaceutical drugs. A reasonable option to consider when it comes to treating, or, better yet, preventing, long-term or degenerative conditions, is to seek the advice and treatment from holistic health care practitioners. Holistic care is the education and treatment of disorders that have not reached disease status. A disease in most cases does not simply develop in one day. Disease comes about by a progression of dysfunction in the bodys innate abilities to correct itself, a term we know as homeostasis. Almost all textbooks written on biology start with a discussion of the life forms innate ability to balance, heal and grow. This is where holistic care takes its cues; if the body cannot maintain
www.naturespathways.com

balance (homeostasis) by itself, then it is in need of care. That care starts by identifying a weakness in the system and then treating the patient by strengthening the system or removing the obstacle or burden that prevents internal homeostasis. For example: A patient comes into a doctors office and says he has joint pain due to an accident some time ago. After ruling out emergency concerns, like a fracture, and if the healing time has been longer than what is expected, the doctor might order an x-ray or MRI. In either case, an NSAID is the likely prescription. We now know that although this may provide some short-term pain reduction, the long-term effects negatively outweigh the benefits of short-term pain relief. Holistic doctors look at this differently. They determine what system is the cause of the longer-term joint pain. Is the musculoskeletal system responsible (scar tissue, joint or muscle dysfunction)? If yes, the better option is physiotherapy to help the tissues recover through targeted therapy and not a broad-based drug that negatively affects the entire bodies cells, putting un-needed strain on healthy cells. If we find out that the endocrine system is the reason for the joint pain not abating, we look at the gland responsible for correcting this system. The adrenal gland is the endocrine gland that is responsible for repair, recovery and producing cortisol, a powerful anti-inflammatory. Often the adrenal glands are working overtime to combat the inflammation, and the protracted stress causes adrenal gland fatigue and a failure for the body to recover and maintain adequate levels of cortisol. As a clinic supporting natural health methods, we routinely use simple blood or saliva tests that are sent out for sophisticated lab analysis. In the example above, the test ordered may center on the cortisol hormone levels in your body at different times of the day. Without adequate cortisol, the bodys joint inflammation rises and degeneration will follow. The correction would then center on the bodys adrenal function. The adrenal glands are the main response to chronic stress, actively helping with repair and recovery of every organ and cell in the body. So the natural choice would be to strengthen and support the adrenals. This can effectively be done with herbs called adaptogens and glandulars, and certainly lifestyle changes, to effectively rebuild the strength and function of these vital glands.

Movement therapy for pets with anxiety ......................................................................

by sabrina bodden, lmT, CyI
ust like humans, pets can experience an array of emotions. We can easily see when our pets feel joy and happiness, and can all too easily tell when theyre unhappy. Another common emotion that pets experience is anxiety, especially when away from their owners or when trying new experiences. Anything from riding in a car, to walking on linoleum, can cause a pet to go into what we know as fight or flight mode. This state is experienced in the body when the sympathetic nervous system is in control. Through certain movement exercises, we can teach a pets nervous system to respond more calmly and go into the more relaxed state of the parasympathetic nervous system. I call this pet yoga. Pet yoga offers a solution for our furry friends who suffer from symptoms of fear, restlessness and nervousness. The name itself gives some humans anxiety about what I intend to do with their animal. Some people imagine a room full of dogs, rolled out on their backs, each on individual sticky mats, being instructed in Sanskrit how to live peacefully. Pet yoga is nothing like that! Of course, our pets cant be taught in the same way as most humans can be. Thats what makes the tools learned in a pet yoga session so valuable. Theyre designed for anyone who cannot understand verbal commands. So instead of trying to teach your

dog how to take full and complete inhales and exhales, we can move their body in a way that allows for it to occur naturally. The tools taught in a pet yoga session can be taught to pet owners so that the movements can be done regularly. For some pets, we

Spectrum Yoga Therapy came out of the teachings of Alignment Yoga, which was created locally and is taught in Madison at the Mound Street Yoga Center, and in Blue Mounds at the Blue Mounds Dharma Center. I took what I learned in my time in the 200-hour Alignment Yoga Advanced Training and from participating in the Spectrum Yoga Therapy classes, and have learned that the same principles apply to anyone with a nervous system that is up-regulated. That includes people dealing with chronic pain, anyone living with a lot of stress, and of course, our anxiety-ridden pets! I currently teach the pet-specific Spectrum Yoga at Tabby & Jacks Holistic Pet Supplies, Grooming and Doggie Daycare in Fitchburg, Wis.

expert answers to your health and wellness questions

Natural food, fast food and calorie burn from muscle ....................................................................
by karmen nenahlo

Question: People keep telling me that if a food is natural, it must be good for me. Is this really true? Answer: In a word, no. It sounds pretty good though, doesnt it? In actuality, all foods are made up of the same basic elements, so whether nature organized those elements into a convenient little package or man did the job in a factory doesnt really matter all that much. Though there are numerous overly processed foods that meet my criteria for being unhealthy, there are plenty of man-made products that are considered healthy. And think about some of the berries and mushrooms that grow in the wild. Many of them are poisonous and can make you downright sick, or possibly even kill you, if you ingest them. But theyre natural, all right! The idea that all foods grown naturally were put here specifically for our benefit is silly. In my opinion, being skeptical about such blanket statements is wise, since these issues are never simply black and white. Question: I love fast food, but I also realize the importance of improving my health and losing weight. Therefore, I have to ask is it ok to eat fast food while on a diet program? Answer: Yes, but as always, there are a few important points to keep in mind. We all know that fast food isnt necessarily the healthiest meal in town, but we also know that being realistic is an important component of any successful weight-loss program. Therefore, it doesnt make sense to completely deprive yourself of fast food, especially if its appropriate for your specific situation. In other words, if youre crunched for time, fast food may be the only reasonable option. That said, if an occasional trip turns into four or five weekly trips, your weight loss efforts and health goals will likely suffer as a result. The key is to become a savvy shopper and watch out for calorie-laden foods with added sugars, sodium and fat. Look for the Nutrition Facts pamphlets in your local
14
Natures Pathways | november 2012

restaurants and educate yourself on the menus. If you make the effort, youll be able to find a sensible meal no matter where you go. Remember, balance, variety and moderation are the words to live by when it comes to food. If you apply these principles regularly, you wont have to sacrifice your health and wellness goals when eating out. Question: My trainer recently told me the more muscle I have, the more calories Ill burn throughout the day. True or false? Answer: This is true, but theres a caveat here. Resting muscle tissue burns about 6 kcals/lb./day at rest, so yes, the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn. However, if the muscle is continually at rest, you can see that you arent going to burn THAT many more calories. For example, if you added 10 lbs. of muscle to your frame (which is admittedly quite difficult), your resting metabolic rate would only increase by about 60 calories per day. However, if you commit to moving that newfound muscle consistently via exercise, then you can increase its calorie-burning potential exponentially. This is obviously true of the muscle mass you already have as well. So its not just accruing new muscle thats important, its making that new muscle work. And just for comparison, note that fat tissue burns about 2 kcals/lb./day, the brain and liver burn close to100 kcals/lb./day, and the heart and kidneys burn close to 200 kcals/lb./day. Its clear that organ tissue burns a ridiculous number of calories, but keep in mind, it makes up a relatively small percentage of your total body mass. On the contrary, though muscle tissue doesnt burn as many calories per pound compared to organ tissue, it makes up about 40% of your total body mass.

Tips from Tony

Take control of your health by reducing sugar in your diet ................................................
by Tony bednarowski

id you know you can completely control your diabetes and weight if you know what to eat? In both of these situations, as with many other chronic health-related issues, it comes down to one common factor: controlling your blood sugar level. With type 2 diabetes, your body is either resistant to the effects of insulin or doesnt produce enough insulin to maintain a normal glucose level. If left untreated, the consequences of type 2 diabetes can be life-threatening. With weight control, if you are having a hard time losing weight or you seem to be continually gaining weight no matter what type of diet or exercise program you try, it all boils down to the fact that you are simply consuming too much sugar. Now, before you disagree, let me define just what a sugar really is. This may actually shock you! Any food that is not an animal product, fat, oil, nut or butter, has to be considered some form of sugar. Its the same sugar thats in your favorite candy bar and its called glucose. In other words, every carbohydrate you eat will be broken down into a form of sugar that breaks down into glucose. The great news is, I have a very simple and inexpensive way to help you control both your weight and your diabetes: Reduce the amount of sugar in your diet! You can check the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood with a simple tool called a blood glucose monitor, which can be purchased online or at your local Shopko, Wal-Mart or Walgreens. So here is how it works: Using your glucose monitor, find your blood sugar level (normal range resides between 70 to 100 milligrams per deciliter). If your blood sugar isnt within normal range when you test it, you need to reduce the amount of carbohydrates youre consuming. Its just that simple. If youre only trying to control your type 2 diabetes, test your levels

three times per day, morning, afternoon and night. Keep your level as close to 80 throughout the day as possible. If you want to lose weight as well, again test yourself three times per day, but in this case you will want to keep your level as close to 70throughout the day as possible, until youve lost your desired amount of weight. At that point, you can go back to 80. In both instances, if you find your blood sugar level rising above 90, eliminate your carb intake until you are back down within range. If you find your blood sugar levels drifting below 60, you will want to eat some carbohydrates, preferably some form ofhealthy starch like potatoes, beans, pasta, rice or grains to get yourself back up into range. Following the advice I outlined here will not only help get you to your desired weight, but also may prevent your need for medication and could prevent many other chronic health-related issues as well.

Are school lunches becoming healthier? ...................................................

rilled cheese on a pretzel bun; maple burst pancakes; cold nachos; breaded chicken nuggets these are some of the lunch options in school cafeterias across the country. Following streamlined government regulations aimed to make school lunches healthier, some parents are left scratching their heads wondering if anything has changed. In January 2012, First Lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack unveiled new standards for school meals that will result in healthier meals for kids across the nation. The new meal requirements will raise standards for the first time in more than 15 years and are expected to improve the health and nutrition of nearly 32 million kids that participate in school meal programs every school day. The healthier meal requirements are a key component of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, which was championed by the First Lady as part of her Lets Move! campaign and signed into law by President Obama. The new standards align school meals with the latest nutrition science and the real-world circumstances of Americas schools, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. The USDA indicates that there are a few main components of the new lunch and breakfast standards: Offer students both fruits and vegetables every day of the week. Substantially increase offerings of whole grain-rich foods. Offer only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties. Limit calories based on the age of the children being served to ensure proper portion size. Increase the focus on reducing the amounts of saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.

These changes are not perfect, but many believe they are a step in the right direction. Some parents, however, feel the new stipulations are not stringent enough, particularly when it comes to work-arounds for some of the new policies. For example, syrupy canned fruit cocktails that are high in sugar count toward the fruit requirement in many schools.

Sodium content is another bone of contention. Research indicates that lowering sodium levels can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and hypertension. To adhere to the new lunch program, schools will have to cut sodium in lunches by more than 50 percent within 10 years. Currently, elementary school lunches contain roughly 1,300 mg of sodium. The goal is to lower that to 1,230 mg by the 2014/2015 school year, gradually dropping to 935 mg by 2017. Many parents and health experts feel sodium levels are not going down fast enough. The new plan will also extend nutrition standards outside of the cafeteria. Foods and beverages sold in vending machines and through other venues on campus must also be modified to adhere to a healthy diet. Canadians may learn from the trials in the United States should they develop their own school lunch programs. Canada remains the only westernized nation without a federally funded school food program. The reason Canada has not developed a national school food strategy (or even a coordinated provincial and territorial program) is that no single ministry takes responsibility for food. Students can bring their own lunches or choose among fast food in cafeterias or snacks from vending machines. One company taking advantage of the United States new school lunch standards is Dominos Pizza. It has developed its Smart Slice school lunch program, which meets the revised standards set by the USDA. Freshly baked and delivered to schools, Smart Slice features multiple nutritious ingredients like whole-grain crust, light mozzarella cheese and reduced sodium sauce. Reduced sodium pepperoni is also available. More than 3,000 schools in 37 states participate in this food program. Although many changes have been put in place to make school lunches healthier, not all parents think these changes are sufficient. Parents who have concerns about school lunches can prepare lunches for their children that meet their personal standards.

Alpaca lifestyle a natural stress reliever ......................................................................

by sally schmidt

veryone experiences pressures in life, but the stress level of the average American appears to be on the rise. The American Psychological Association revealed that 66% of adults suffer from stress-induced chronic health conditions. (brighthub. com 3/12) In todays busy and demanding world, its important to find a way to stay grounded. Many people credit their animals as great stress-busters. Dogs, cats and even horses have been successfully utilized in animal-assisted therapy. Now there is a newcomer to the animal therapy scene the alpaca! Alpacas are a member of the Camelid family, along with camels, llamas, vicunas and guanacos. Starting in 1983, alpacas were imported to North America from South America. The North American herd is now over 100,000 strong (AOBA). They are prized for their luxurious fiber and gentle personalities. Those personalities make them a naturally therapeutic animal to work with. Alpacas are very sensitive and mirror the energy of people around them. A person interacting with alpacas must be calm and relaxed or the animals will simply run away. When you raise alpacas, it doesnt matter what has happened in your daily life, when you go to the barn to work with the animals, you have to just take a deep breath and let it all go. Learning to leave a bad attitude behind is only one of the benefits from working with alpacas. These intelligent animals develop strong bonds with their caretakers, often coming to the fence when their humans arrive to feed them or clean up the communal poop pile. The alpacas dont seem to mind their somewhat strange two-legged companions, as long as they stay calm and co-exist with the herd. Nationally-known animal communicator and counseling specialist Dana Miller Coburn lends insight into why alpacas bring us a sense of calm. In communicating with alpacas and llamas, both of them say they enjoy a simple life. As herd animals, they see life as simple because it is easy to know what to do within their group. The alpacas goals are more to feel secure and to always have
www.naturespathways.com

enough food to eat. (American Livestock Magazine & Publishing, Summer 2012) One way they achieve security is by having clearly defined roles within the herd. Once established, they dont challenge each other; they live in harmony. Perhaps human stress levels would be reduced if we exercised the same respect for each other. Additionally, alpacas possess an uncanny intuition for the emotional needs of humans. People experiencing mental illness, chronic health issues or developmental disabilities are often readily accepted as part of the herd. Children, too, enjoy special privileges with alpacas. Alpacas are naturally inquisitive, and respond positively to the openness and non-threatening energy they sense from the young.

lessons we can learn from alpacas:

Stick together. Check your attitude at the door. Avoid people with negative energy. Enjoy the simple life. Accept others into your herd.

People who own alpacas experience these stress-reducing lessons as daily reminders simply by working with these gentle animals.

A monthly advice column for your energy system ......................................................................

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, With the holidays rapidly approaching, I am already feeling panicked about family get-togethers. I dont get along with my family and feel like they dont understand me. I need help knowing how to handle being with people that bring out the bad side of me. Black Sheep Dear Black Sheep, Family is interesting whether biological, in-laws or caretakers in general. There are three main areas that you can work on to make the holidays at least bearable if not pleasant. The first and main area to work with is your boundaries. Boundaries can be light or extremely strong depending on the situation. The most important thing to remember is that an energetic boundary is not meant to keep others out and yourself in. Instead a boundary is meant to define where your energy ends and another energy begins. Before meeting with family, take a few moments or more to check in with your boundaries. Imagine a color, substance or light is surrounding you. Practice feeling, seeing and listening to where your energy starts and stops. This definition works suprisingly well in keeping yourself strong and open at the same

time. When you define what and where you are, you will feel more confident and less defensive. Grounding is always my favorite energy technique. When it comes to being in difficult company, it is crucial to help you release energy that doesnt feel right to you. It is very easy to get triggered by family and when you get triggered, old energy resurfaces and sometimes takes over who you are now. Making sure you are grounded will insure you are constantly releasing these triggers. Grounding also lets you release energy that you may absorb from those around you. Whether people realize it or not, we are constantly absorbing energy from people around us, and family is usually where those relationships begin. The 10th chakra is another place to check out. This chakra sits below your feet and deals with many areas in our lives, including family heritage and ancestory. If you notice a lot of repeated family patterns that go from generation to generation, it is possible that your 10th chakra is unbalanced and taking on energy from relatives you may not even know. Whatever you discover, remember and be confident with who you are, maintain your state of being regardless of what triggers you, and take moments before and after the visit to insure that you are in the best energetic space you can be.
Tina, a Madison-based intuitive counselor and energy healer, is a lifelong student of the paranormal. She had her first clairvoyant vision at a young age and continues to see and hear energy. Tina is trained in clairvoyant reading and many modalities of energy healing, but through professional training she was disappointed in the methods many schools used to devalue everyones natural gifts. Tina started The Chakra House to teach how natural and easy it is to work with energy. She believes that everyone has natural psychic gifts and can access their abilities if they realized their potential.

where have all the cowboys gone?

Perspective of mature male masculinity ........................................................
by Dakota Windancer

he title of this article suggests, through metaphor, the question many women are asking of the men in their relationships and of men in general. If I inserted the noun king for cowboy, it may reveal the question that women really want to have the answer to: Where has mature masculinity gone? Where is it hiding?

As a man among men, who continues his daily struggle to live in beauty and balance in proper relationship to all living things, I can say that for myself, and for many men, the way we love our women, the way we view women and the choices we make to prove our devotion often are reflected by the shadow wounds we carry from our fathers, and their fathers before

them. I am not projecting blame, I am only suggesting that perhaps a mature modeling of masculine energy was not and is not available to many men, past or present, as integration for living. When a man stays late at the office night after night, he does so out of love, unaware that what his wife really desires is authentic connection with him. Material rewards are appreciated, along with other comforts he may be providing through long hours away, but his expression of love has a sideways interpretation in regard to her satisfaction of their relationship. Providing distraction and temporary relief from boredom are no replacement for the depths of intimacy only authentic communication and time spent together can bring. Most men are hard wired with an abundance of warrior energy. After all, since primitive times, men have been the hunters and women the gatherers. Working together, they co-create community life, the men utilizing aggression and strength to hunt, the women utilizing the qualities of nurturing, fostering and affection for child raising, and home stabilization. Modern living and the complexities of Western society have all but eliminated the ritual eldership needed for boys to transition from the immature boy masculinity, to the mature masculinity required for

constellating world building and blessing energies. Fragmentation of the family unit has left boys to figure out for themselves, unguided, what masculinity means! There exists in many cases no role model to exhibit the proper integration of warrior energy in its fullness. Live-in boyfriends or step-dads, who model abuse and dysfunction, further confuse young minds as to appropriate warrior behaviors. This immature modeling provides the fertile ground for this young man to grow up aggressive and angry, learning that bullying provides a tool for getting what he wants. Never does it occur to this same man that the qualities of compassion, kindness and gentleness could produce the same result with blessing to each, rather than the carnage of mistrust and fear. Patriarchy is born out of immature masculinity, causing deeper fragmentation and rifts between the genders. This is only one example and the damage it can cause. What is needed is balance and understanding to occur in how men view women, and how women view men, based on the Project5_Layout 1 10/15/12 3:28 PM Page the shadows we carry toward one another, and1 personal shadows

we carry as a human being. When a man or woman makes the statement, I have fallen in love, they may not realize that they have projected a shadow, as that statement serves to objectify the man or woman identified as golden god or golden goddess, an image that neither could live up to for the other! Perhaps its time for all men and women to put down the shields and swords of defensiveness and aggression, and together create some authentic transparency concerning the feelings and perceptions we have toward one another. In my tenure of living, I have lived long enough to know that the relative truth for me in my relationship to women is that when I am living in mature masculinity, I am able to love all women through my wife. For me, that means sometimes my true power and strength are shown through the qualities of yielding in my listening to her and my releasing through sharing my truth so she knows how I feel. I rely on her feedback so she knows I can trust her truth to be also her honesty. That for me is the definition of strength through gentleness...

Tabby & Jacks Pet supplies, grooming and doggie daycare

Helping you make good choices with holistic pet products and services
by Jackie Peters
rowing up, michelle Lonergan was always surrounded by animals. during that time, her parents not only fostered a wide variety of animals (dogs, cats, birds, raccoons and more), but also were instrumental in founding noahs ark animal sanctuary in rockford, Ill. In addition, her mother was self-employed as a holistic dog groomer; a skill michelle learned at the age of 12 and a business she took over at the age of 15! the animal-loving familys involvement with animals also led them to start a natural pet food distributorship, which they named Charjans distributors. Her parents love and compassion for animals definitely rubbed off on michelle. and despite leaving for college at the age of 22 and then working as a banker for 15 years thereafter, the yearning to help and work with animals never left her. as michelle would read over business plans from aspiring entrepreneurs as part of her job, the idea to open her own pet nutrition business started to develop in the back of her mind. Five years ago, michelle and her husband, Ken, took the leap of faith and opened tabby & Jacks pet supplies and grooming. at that time, the cozy store offered an array of premium, holistic pet foods and supplements that safely completed the nutritional needs of dogs and cats, along with holistic grooming. since then, michelle and Ken have opened a second location and, most recently, expanded their original store to 3700 sq. ft. With the grand re-opening in October, tabby & Jacks Fitchburg introduced its holistic doggie daycare, which occupies 1100 sq. ft. of the new space. michelle is also excited about a much larger gift section just in time for the holidays. despite the rapid growth theyve experienced, michelle and Ken have stayed focused on the reason they opened in the first place: to provide healthy and safe food, quality accessories and holistic services (now grooming and doggie daycare) at a fair price with your pets best interest at heart. although now they need a few more team members to maintain their optimal level of customer service.

michelle is quick to point out the efforts of her store manager, mandy penisten. With many years of experience in the pet industry, mandy played a key role in the expansion, in opening the doggie daycare and in obedience certification, explains michelle. Her true love and passion for animals can be seen in her everyday attitude and smiley demeanor. mandy has two rescues, sally and shayna, that accompany her to work at both locations.

Tabby & Jacks offerings include:

PeT suPPlIes
at tabby & Jacks, youll find a wide variety (1500 sq. ft.) of healthy dog and cat foods, treats and supplements, along with gifts of all kinds pet clothing, toys and accessories. pet nutrition is really at the forefront here, emphasizes michelle. I love the reaction people have after we provide advice and/or research for their pets and make educated recommendations on their nutritional needs, she adds. Customers like Karen Christianson appreciate the time and expertise team members share with them.
www.naturespathways.com

When one of Christiansons three dogs, gucci, was diagnosed with a nose tumor and given only 90 days to live, she was desperate for help. the 13-yearold bichon was suffering with the side effects of the chemo and radiation from the clinical trial she was a part of. they were so helpful at tabby & Jacks! When guccis throat was burned from treatment, they recommended a refrigerated food that was soft and good for chemo/radiation dogs. during another bout, they shared information about an enzyme that was shown to be effective for that issue as well. every time I go there, they have good recommendations, Christianson reflects. Happily, gucci is still with us and her vet cannot believe she is still alive.

HolIsTIc groomINg servIces

tabby & Jacks provides an expansive menu of grooming services, some of which include: shampoo and conditioning, drying, brushing, trimming, ear cleaning, teeth brushing, teeth scaling, nail trimming and checking anal glands, to name a few. What makes the services holistic, according to michelle, We use only the most gentle, chemical-free products, eliminate stressful practices, like cage dryers, and really strive for a calming environment, so there are never overbookings. While the upgraded Fitchburg store includes two additional rooms, both locations offer the same relaxing, high-quality service. guila parker brings her three dogs to tabby & Jacks for grooming on a regular basis since moving to madison two years ago. they really know what theyre doing and take great care, she says. If there are issues, the groomer takes the time to educate me on possible causes and the best ways to remedy the situations naturally. they are very generous with their time and knowledge that way, she continues. parker also brings her foster dogs to tabby & Jacks and continues to be impressed by their handling of the special needs that arise like skin infections, allergies, shyness, etc. If a team member doesnt have the answer, they will do the research and get it.

Dog TraININg & PlaygrouPs

What you feed your pet is so important. When choosing holistic food, which is made with high-quality, easily digested and natural ingredients, customers are able to have a positive effect on the overall well-being of their pets, explains michelle. Unfortunately, there are few regulations about what manufacturers label as natural and holistic, so she recommends that every pet parent consult a nutritionist to ensure pets are being fed for optimal health and longevity. tabby & Jacks training focuses on positive reinforcement techniques that are tailored to each dogs unique personality, needs and behaviors. We like to help our customers to better understand their pooches and why they exhibit certain behaviors so we can set them up for success in the class, home and beyond, explains michelle. the 6-week sessions offer small class sizes for a great teacher to pet ratio, never to exceed 3:1. playgroups are so important for your dogs socialization. tabby & Jacks offers this valuable experience on tuesdays at 6:30 for puppies; thursdays at 6:30 for all dogs; and saturdays at 9:00 for small dogs and 10:30 for large dogs. despite the fact that she doubled her hours (compared to the banking job), michelle hardly notices, as shes doing what she loves. even her time away from work is shared with two dogs, Bella and Lucy, and two cats, Lilly and simba. michelle is just grateful to be making a living doing something she is so passionate about. From teenage dog groomer to Cpa/business banker to full-time pet nurturer, michelle has really come full circle!

Memories of a sweep ...................................................

by Ernest bingham

kay, children, the time is cool, the suns dropping faster in the sky, nows the time for tales to tell. An old chimney man myself, Ill tell you a tale of sweeping a chimney in old Edinburgh. Being that Im a master, I tend to only work with masters. On this particular day, I was working with a master chimney sweep, third generation Abetta chimney sweeps of Edinburgh, Scotland. Paul is his name. Paul is a wonderful, wiry man in his midforties, of good nature and humor. If youve had your chimney swept in America, youll see that its a bit different in Scotland. Paul, Alphe and I arrived in the front of the house in Pauls small euro van. Alphe is Pauls apprentice, six years now, and ready to go on his own. The house before us was in Old Town, five stories of stone, tall and narrow with a slate roof. It had a 16/12 pitch, which means its a steep roof. The chimney rose from the lowest edge of the roof, 13 feet straight up and over the cobblestone pathway nearly 60 feet below. We would be cleaning fireplaces on the top three floors this day. The simple equipment Paul carried in the van was a few chimney sweep brushes, some ropes and weights, a black bag and yesterdays Edinburgh News. Thats it; no vacuums, no scanners, no highfalutin equipment to impress a customer. Just the actual equipment needed to do a job. The lady of the house greeted Paul in a manner of long familiarity. She showed us our rooms and left us to our work. The pink room was at the top of the stairs and so would be the first to be cleaned. It was a large room all in pink with a grand piano set between the fireplace and windows that looked down on Old Town. In front of the fireplace, Alphe laid down a few sheets of the newspaper hed brought up from the van.

An old chimney man myself, ill tell you a tale of sweeping a chimney in old edinburgh.
Up you go now lads, its time to get to work. Paul and I climbed the attic stairs up to the window bay under the roof. He wriggled through the window and disappeared up the roof. I heard him pass over my head, the brushes and weights scraping along the morning slate. I was a bit slower as the window was a good bit tighter on me. Once on the roof, I made my way over to a valley in the roof and worked my way up to the ridgecap. That would be the top peak of the roof. I turned to see Paul climbing the sweeps ladder up the side of the chimney. Hurry it up now, Ernest, the mornings a wastin. Aye, Paul, Im on the way! Scrabbling along the ridge cap about twenty-five feet, I came in alignment with the chimney down the roof. It was now a slide of fifteen feet down the dew-covered slate to the cricket at the base of the chimney. If I miss the chimney, Im off into space. Once at the base of the chimney, I began to climb the sweeps ladder. The sweeps ladder isnt a ladder in the traditional sense; in this case it was just L-shaped shelf brackets nailed on to the brick up the 13 feet of rise to the top of the chimney, with the brackets spaced about two feet apart. At two hundred and forty pounds, I was a good eighty pounds heavier than Paul, so each bracket I clung to bent down as I made my way up. Finally at the top, I grabbed a tall chimney pot to pull myself the last few inches up and it leaned in my direction.
www.naturespathways.com

You might want to watch those pots, Ernest, theyre all loose, Paul said as he smiled an amused smile. Aye, Paul, its good you told me afterwards so I wouldnt be confused. The top of the chimney was 18 inches wide and 7 feet long, with four tall pots resting atop its rounded surface. My feet were slightly hanging over the edges of the chimney, but snug against the loose pot as I surveyed the city. The roof below me to one side, the cobbles far below on the other, Edinburgh was layed out before me in the morning air. Away in the distance the mists were rising at the foot of Calton Hill, smoke was drifting atop the chimneys around us and the fine smell of burning peat was in the air. A simple slip and Id not survive the fall, but what finer job could there be, to see what so few see, the chimney folk such as we. Paul was on the other end of the chimney smiling back at me; Tis a lovely thing we have before us, Ernest. This is my town and I love it. There atop the tall stone chimney with wobbly tiles and all, we two shared a moment that I will long recall. Brief and broken by Alphes sooty call: Alright ya buggers! Sweeps down and enough of this moonin! Drop the damn brush will ya! Sweeps up! Here she comes, Paul yelled, and down the flue the weighted brush went, its sound diminishing as it descended into the dark. It seemed a long time before we heard the clunk of the brush hitting the smoke chamber floor of the fireplace. Sweeps down! Pull er up! came Alphes call. Paul pulled the rope up quickly producing volumes of soot that filled the air around and about the top of the chimney. The brush burst free with a whoosh, and a plume of soot shot ten feet above us. Sweeps up! Here she comes! And down the flue it went again. Six times down, six times up. And that flues done and its time for the next. We traded the brush and rope duties back and forth, Paul and I, as Alphe set up each flue for sweeping. All to the echo of, Sweeps up! and Sweeps down! above the streets of Edinburgh. With all the flues swept, its down the ladder I go. As I descend, I bend each bracket back up to horizontal so Paul wont notice my bit of weight. Im not overly fat, Im just big for a sweep, and Ive often carried a woodstove by myself. Its scrabble up the slippery slate again to the rooftop and back down again to the window. Sooty prints on the sill and wall as I roll in onto the floor. The pink room isnt pink anymore, all the keys on the piano are black now. Theres Alphe in the fireplace brushing a bit of soot onto the scraps of newspaper and folding it carefully into an envelope. Into the black bag the soot envelope goes, and its on to the next room to finish up there. I look back as I leave to observe a lone pink square of carpet amongst the sooty remains of a sweeping well done. Were leaving the house when Paul mentions the bit of soot left behind. No, dont trouble your mind on it, Paul! Ive the cleaning lady just behind you to make it all good again. Be off on your rounds and have a good day. Well see you in a few months. These are my memories as a sweep in Edinburgh. With memories yet to come, Ernest.

Chamomile
(Matricaria recutita, Chamomilla recutita) .........................................................

here are two types of chamomile used for health conditions: German chamomile and Roman chamomile. While the two kinds are thought to have similar effects on the body, the German variety is more commonly used in the United States and is the focus of this article.

what the science says

what chamomile is used for

Chamomile has been widely used in children and adults for thousands of years for a variety of health conditions. Today, chamomile is used as a folk or traditional remedy for sleeplessness, anxiety and gastrointestinal conditions such as upset stomach, gas and diarrhea. It is also used topically for skin conditions and for mouth ulcers resulting from cancer treatment.

Chamomile has not been well studied in people so there is little evidence to support its use for any condition. Some early studies point to chamomiles possible benefits for certain skin conditions and for mouth ulcers caused by chemotherapy or radiation. In combination with other herbs, chamomile may be of some benefit for upset stomach, for diarrhea in children and for infants with colic. NCCAM-funded research includes studies of chamomile for generalized anxiety disorder and abdominal pain caused by childrens bowel disorders.

how chamomile is used

Side effects and cautions

The flowering tops of the chamomile plant are used to make teas, liquid extracts, capsules or tablets. The herb can also be applied to the skin as a cream or an ointment, or used as a mouth rinse.

There are reports of allergic reactions in people who have eaten or come into contact with chamomile products. Reactions can include skin rashes, throat swelling, shortness of breath and anaphylaxis (a life-threatening allergic reaction). People are more likely to experience allergic reactions to chamomile if they are allergic to related plants in the daisy family, which includes ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds and daisies. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help to ensure coordinated and safe care.

flower power! ....................................................................

by Jack A. Erb

ts common in todays fast-paced society to be under a lot of stress. We see it every day in the papers: shootings, violence, divorce and what I notice most people who have gotten their fourth DWI (Driving While Intoxicated), sometimes resulting in injury or worse. We all have different ways of dealing with stress: smoking, drinking, drugs and prescription drugs, which can become addictive. There are also other ways that we deal with stress. Feeling angry, sad or even depressed is a sign of the pain of being under stress! One of the most difficult jobs of a natural healer is to get people to understand that natural healing is not about treating symptoms. Natural healing is about getting to the cause of the health problem and dealing with that cause. It may be a combination of nutritional deficiencies, drinking more water (alkaline water if you can get it), getting more sleep or exercise, or dealing with emotional stress. This brings us to the power of the flower. I have neither the space nor the time here to tell you how powerful flower essences are. So, I will start by saying that if you get the body, mind and spirit concept of wellness, then you are on the right track. Dr. Edward Bach, an English doctor and homeopath, discovered how to use flowers for emotional healing and created the first 38 flower remedies, known as Bach Flower Essences. Frustrated by the symptomatic approach to modern medicine, Dr. Bach felt that medical doctors focused too much on pathology (the disease symptoms) and not enough on the patient. I recently attended a flower essence seminar put on by Steven Horne, a registered herbalist with the American Herbalist Guild. Steven has developed the flower essences for Natures Sunshine that I use and recommend. Steven not only is a talented herbalist, but his life experiences also add to his credibility. He has counseled many, many people who have suffered from grief, abuse, anger or other deep-seated emotional problems that no other remedies seemed to help. I saw him in action and participated in the group sessions and on that one Saturday in Green Bay, Wis., my life and emotional well-being were changed forever. Thank you, Steven Horne! What a remarkable human being. I encourage anyone with deep-seated emotional problems to attend one of Steven Hornes
www.naturespathways.com

seminars. He resides in Arizona, but does these seminars all over the country for Natures Sunshine. Lets talk now about todays flower essence. Its called Distress Remedy. Distress Remedy is a blend of seven flower essences used to restore a sense of presence and awareness during shock or trauma. This flower essence can calm you and help you not dissociate during a crisis situation. A sudden death in the family, an accident, becoming the victim of a crime or whatever trauma you may suffer; when bad things happen, it helps to be able to focus on what needs to be done at the time. If you know of someone who has experienced a trauma and never quite got over the incident, then Distress Remedy is a place to start. We all have emotional baggage that builds up over a lifetime. Sure, diet, exercise and talking with a loved one, a support group or your pastor may help, but many people today hold onto emotional baggage and that is a mistake. That can ruin relationships; your mental well-being and your health can all be attributed to suppressed feelings not dealt with. Learning to use flower essences individually takes many years of study and practice, which I do not have. However, just reading Steve Hornes book, The Hearts Key to Health, Happiness & Success, can go a long way in understanding how emotions affect not only our physical health but also our emotional health. Healing with flowers is a very powerful natural health protocol that should not be over looked.

why Tai Chi? .................................................................

by Doug brown

ou probably know someone who practices Tai Chi. Youve seen it in the park. You may even have tried a class once or twice. Tai Chi seems to be everywhere these days, and most people have at least heard of this centuries-old practice from China. But even so, unless youre more deeply involved, youre likely not sure what exactly Tai Chi is. Why do millions of people not only learn Tai Chi, but also continue to practice it throughout their lives? How did this martial art from a little village in China grow to become known around the world as one of the most powerful health practices? And why might Tai Chi be right for you? The answer is simple: You have a body. You have a mind. Tai Chi is a practice that helps your mind-body function optimally! This may sound a little like some vague new-age practice, but hundreds of years ago in China thats not what Tai Chis creators had in mind. They were concerned with survival, and self-defense training was necessary to deal with very real, violent threats to their personal and communal safety. To cope with those threats they realized it wasnt enough just to be strong. They also needed to be sensitively aware and responsive in order to align themselves effectively with the ever-changing forces that confronted them. So they learned to train mind and body together. They trained slowly and patiently, focusing on correct internal practice rather than fixating on external results. They learned that attention and relaxation, sensitivity and power, responsiveness and precision are all related, and that in refining any of these skills the mind gathers the information from the bodys senses, then uses that information to direct the body. The body responds, all the while reporting more information about the changing circumstance to the attentive mind. From this endless mind-body feedback loop and the wisdom gathered through millennia of explorations in philosophy and medicine, they created the world renowned martial art that many know today as Tai Chi. Amazingly, the very same techniques they developed then are proving to be effective in addressing very different threats to our well-being in the 21st century! Today, the biggest threats most people face are not violence, but rather health, societal and environmental problems that are the result of our own lifestyle choices. For us to make the best choices moment by moment, just like the Chinese villagers of centuries

past, we need to be not only strong and healthy, but also centered, highly aware and flexible in our responses. To attain this, our bodies and minds need to work together. But often, when we become narrowly focused on some task, we just want to get it done and dont pay attention to how we do it. So we engage in physical activities mindlessly, pushing our bodies to injury, while our minds are bored or distracted, or we push our minds while neglecting or even abusing our bodies, ignoring how physical vitality helps keep minds sharp! Tai Chi helps us keep the mind-body in balance. By practicing moving with detailed awareness and mental and physical precision, Tai Chi players engage the whole and strengthen the integration of the various parts. Tai Chi practice fine tunes the mindbody mechanisms, both lubricating the machinery and adjusting the control systems! Because the purpose of Tai Chi is to optimize the mind-body, Tai Chi players arent distracted by trying to win or set some record. Practice isnt aimed at collecting awards or certificates, or celebrating vanquishing an opponent. The benefits of Tai Chi practice are internal. The victories are in knowing oneself; the rewards are feeling better. And the celebration? The celebration is every moment of living well!
Doug Brown is the director of the Tai Chi Center of Madison. The center, founded in 1974 by Tricia Yu, is one of the oldest Tai Chi Schools in the United States, and teaches Tai Chi for health to adults of all ages. For more information, visit www. taichicenterofmadison.com.

ranching. In 2006, the couple purchased their current property in De Pere, Wisconsin a 19th century farmhouse and barn sitting on 12 acres, which is located between the Fox Cities and Green Bay. After a year of remodeling and updating, the farm was ready to house both humans and alpacas. Finishing touches on the fence were being done as the alpacas arrived at their new home. An alpaca is a domesticated South American animal, renowned for its docile temperament and beautiful functional fiber. Sally says that even though their original business venture focused on breeding and showing alpacas, she has since fallen in love with the fiber. Its softer than cashmere and will keep you warmer than wool. It regulates your body temperature, she says. Unlike sheeps wool, alpaca fiber does not contain lanolin, which makes it an ideal choice for allergy sufferers. The wonderful qualities of alpaca fiber led them to expand their business by adding a retail store on the farm where they sell alpaca clothing. From fun and funky to timeless classic designs, Sabambas apparel store provides something for every style. The animals and clothing alone would keep anyone busy, but Tom and Sally also run a bed & breakfast from their farmhouse. Guests can choose from two rooms, each with a private bathroom and shower. Guests at the bed & breakfast can participate in farm life if they choose, and some have even witnessed alpaca births. A trip to Sabamba Alpaca Ranch and Bed & Breakfast provides a truly unique vacation experience.

hen Tom and Sally Schmidt finished raising their seven children, they werent ready to be empty-nesters. Instead, they made an unusual choice alpaca

Tom and Sally are not finished growing their business. They are passionate about helping the alpaca industry grow. For years, raising alpacas was a very elite and expensive endeavor. With recent economic changes, alpaca ranching has become much more affordable. We are seeing younger people interested in alpacas, says Sally. Thats very exciting because these new breeders will re-energize the industry. They just need to have a source for trustworthy information and ongoing support. Thats where Tom and Sallys next focus lies mentoring newcomers to the alpaca industry. They already offer seminars throughout the year to educate prospective breeders and buyers about alpaca farming, and they provide boarding options for those who are just starting out. The Schmidts hope to inspire new breeders to raise larger herds of alpacas that can be used for their fiber. Tom and Sally are a winning combination. Hes the expert when it comes to hay, fencing, manure and pasture management, while Sally enjoys cooking, fiber, clothing and customer service. They both love being educators and working with the alpacas! What some might consider as a hobby, Tom and Sally Schmidt have built into a thriving, diverse business that keeps them busy doing the things they love.

energy, eastern style .............................................................

by leora Weitzman
astern and Western medicine rest on very different philosophies. The industrialized West studies and treats bodies as machines made of parts, such as organs, blood vessels, etc. The more fluid, holistic Eastern view charts dynamic paths of energy through the body that link and govern a range of physical and emotional functions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the energy, or life force, coursing through the body is called Qi the same word as in Tai Chi or Reiki. The most well-known pathways of this energy are the 12 Organ Meridians, capitalized to reflect the inclusion of more than just the physical organ. Six Organ Meridians are yin, and six are yang. Each yin Organ Meridian is associated with particular emotional and spiritual functions as well as physical ones. TCM makes no distinction between body and psyche, regarding states of mind as a subtle manifestation of the same energy patterns that eventually show up as physical states. For example, the Lung meridian regulates the taking in and letting go not only of air, but also of more abstract things, such as support or relationships. When Lung is in balance, were able to take things in and let them go in a healthy way. Healthy grief is a function of the Lung meridian. When Lung is out of balance, grief may morph into selfpity, jealousy or greed. From the non-dual Daoist perspective of TCM, all emotions are appropriate at times. Treatment simply enhances freedom
www.naturespathways.com

to move on from an emotion when its no longer appropriate. Early treatment can also keep an energetic imbalance from reaching the point of producing in the case of Lung meridian, for instance actual respiratory symptoms. The energy in the Organ Meridians is called Ying Qi or nourishing energy. It is this energy that fuels metabolic and emotional/ spiritual functions. Itself nourished by food and breath, it can be treated with dietary changes, herbs, meditation and Qi-related exercises (Qi Gong) as well as acupuncture or the needle-free option of acupressure. Whereas acupuncturists place multiple needles in patients simultaneously and then leave the room while the needles work, an acupressurist holds a few points manually, then moves on to hold others in a sequence that can adapt to the receivers responses. An advantage of acupressure is its ability to vary the amount of pressure so as to address two layers of Qi few Westerners have heard of. The Organ Meridians are actually sandwiched between a deeper layer and a more superficial one. The deepest layer of Qi is Yuan Qi, or prenatal energy. It is inherited from our parents and connected with our essence and destiny. It can be treated by holding more deeply certain points along the 8 Extraordinary Vessels. The most superficial layer, called Wei Qi or protective energy, moves in the Tendino-Muscle Meridians just under the skin. It responds to extremely light touch

and movement on or above the skin. This level affords safe treatment for rapid-onset conditions such as colds and flus. Acupressure addressing any or all of these energy layers can be easily folded into a Western-style massage. It contributes greatly to relieving muscle tension, as our muscles tend to express the state of our energy.

Jane gives permanent make-up a try ....................................................................

n a beautiful fall day with color at peak, I made a trip to one of my favorite getaways. New Glarus is an historic town rich in Swiss heritage located 30 miles southwest of Madison. As I walked around, I ventured into Art & Soul Tattoo and Gallery, which is owned by Renee May. This unique little shop is filled with art created by local artists that are one-of-a-kind. The art was great, but I wanted to learn more about the permanent makeup part of Art & Soul. Like many women, saving ten minutes a day in my routine is huge. I will admit that I am that person who puts makeup on to go to the gym, so I am doing it twice a day. When I talked with my workout buddy (who always looks great) about this, she said, Why dont you do what I did? I have permanent eyeliner. I never have to put on eyeliner, and most days dont even wear mascara! So, she is rolling out of bed like this? I had to learn more! As I have gotten older, my eyes seem to have disappeared; makeup is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. So after talking with Renee, I scheduled my appointment. She told me to book about 90 minutes and that Jessica Kilian would be the artist working with me. Jessica has been doing permanent makeup for two years now. She told me that she decided to go into the business after she had her own eyes done. Jessica is a Navy veteran who has served three tours in Afghanistan and saw tattooing as a way to keep helping others. More on that later. After I filled out the paperwork and talked about the look I wanted, we were ready to roll. Jessica explained to me what to expect, and that I should let her know if I was uncomfortable at any time during the procedure. She numbed my eyelids and went to work. I selected black for my color and only wanted my upper lids done. I wanted a natural look, not too dramatic. I am not going to lie to you, it was a little uncomfortable, but bearable. It felt like I was getting my eyebrows plucked. After about 45 minutes, Jessica was done. When I looked in the mirror, I saw that my eyes
32
Natures Pathways | november 2012

just popped. I loved it! Jessica gave me the information on my aftercare and I was good to go. So who is a candidate for permanent makeup? Both Renee and Jessica shared with me that their client base is diverse. Many clients are like me: they are busy and active, have families to take care of and dont always allow time for themselves. Most are over the age of 35 because as we age, eyelashes and eyebrows tend to thin (thus my disappearing eyes). I wanted a polished look, but I didnt always have the time or energy. I am sure many women can relate. So why did Jessica see permanent makeup as a way to continue helping others? Many clients who come in are going through chemotherapy and radiation. They lose their eyebrows and, in some cases, their eyelashes. With the tattooing of liner and eyebrows, they can feel pretty again. Like wearing a wig, the permanent makeup is a way to help improve the appearance and the self- esteem of those who are undergoing treatment. At Art & Soul, there are many options for permanent makeup available. They include: eyebrows, eyeliner, lip liner and lip color. As a specialty, Art & Soul offers areola repigmentation for both men and women who have undergone breast reconstruction. This provides the finishing touch after breast surgery. Renee and Jessica truly are helping people with the services that they provide. As for me, I love my new look and must admit that I am hooked! I, too, am rolling out of bed looking good! Another road trip is planned for shopping at Art & Soul, and I am going for my eyebrows next. So if you are looking for a great experience, hop in the car and travel to New Glarus to meet Renee and Jessica at Art & Soul.

The importance of your kidneys ......................................................................

by marcia k. simler, CnhP

o you know how important your kidneys are? Your kidneys are the filtering system of the body and have up to 72 functions. It is your left kidney that fails first, due to the toxins that can overflow from your liver. The right kidney usually has a problem due to inherited conditions. Your kidneys filter approximately 8.1 liters of blood every minute, or 4,000 gallons a day! You must drink at least half your body weight in ounces of water a day (e.g., a 150-pound person needs at least 75 oz. of fresh clean water a day). This helps filter out and dilute the toxins, which then pass through the kidneys and out the bladder. One important symptom of kidney problems is edema. Edema results when the kidneys produce less urine because they are unable to properly excrete salt and other wastes, and fluid builds up in the body. Ankles and hands may swell, and the person becomes short of breath. Toxic wastes may accumulate in the bloodstream due to kidney malfunction. Symptoms of kidney problems include abdominal pain, appetite loss, back pain, chills, fever, fluid retention (bloating), nausea, urinary urgency and vomiting. The urine may be cloudy or bloody. Back pain may be sudden and intense, occurring just above the waist and running down the groin. The Chinese do not separate calcium and kidney, so sufficient calcium is critical to kidney function. If you have insufficient calcium, you may also experience knee pain. Buchtu from the Peruvian rain forest supports kidney function and can be taken by capsule or as a tea. Celery and parsley seeds are a natural diuretic and help reduce high levels of uric acid. Cranberries contain

substances that acidify the urine, destroy bacteria build-up and promote healing of the bladder. Drink throughout the day, but make sure it is pure unsweetened cranberry juice, not commercial cranberry juice sweetened with high fructose corn syrup or sugar. The herb hydrangea and Uva-ursi are excellent natural diuretics. Uva-ursi is slightly germicidal, so if there are any bacteria present, they will likely be destroyed by it. Marshmallow root and cornsilk soothes the kidney tract and helps heal, along with red clover, nettle, goldenrod and watermelon seed tea. Consume a diet composed of 75% raw foods. Eat asparagus, bananas, celery, cucumbers, garlic, parsley, and watercress. Avoid all dairy products except for those that are soured, such as low fat yogurt or buttermilk. Try raw goats milk for a few weeks, and put one tablespoon of black strap molasses in a quart of goats milk and drink. Reduce your intake of animal protein, but you may use beans, lentils, millet or peas, instead. Take care of your kidneys and they will take of you. If you wish to test how well your kidneys are functioning, stop by Natural Health Works and see what we could recommend for you personally.

The green Owl Caf ...................................................

egetarian, vegan or gluten-free food isnt what I would normally think about when lunching out, but my experience at The Green Owl Caf changed that. As you enter the caf, you cannot help but notice the collection of vintage owls. The restaurant, which opened in December 2009, is a local favorite and very warm and inviting. I enjoyed talking with the proprietor and chef, Jennie, about what makes dishes vegetarian, vegan or gluten-free, and I learned a lot! As I peered through the lunch menu, there was a great selection of vegetarian and vegan options. Just to name a few, it included vegan crabby cakes, vegetarian Italian beef and vegetarian meatballs in marinara. There are also great dinner choices, including vegan schnitzel, stuffed red peppers, un-chicken parmesan and vegetarian jambalaya. For my lunch, I chose their TLT with avocado sandwich. This was smoky baked tempeh, lettuce, tomato and avocado served on Madison Sourdough (a favorite local Madison bakery), with a vegan aioli. This take on the traditional BLT sandwich was excellent! I had never tried tempeh before, and it was a really tasty bacon replacement. I also enjoyed perfectly baked kale chips. Now, when I try to make these at home, they usually burn, but at The Green Owl Caf, they toss the kale with olive oil and a blend of spices and then bake it to a crispy perfection.

I also tried a beverage that was new to me called Kombucha. This is a fermented tea made with organic and fair trade ingredients. I tried the cherry berry flavor, which is brewed at The Green Owl Caf. They also brew a lemon basil flavor. The teas are light and refreshing, and filled with antioxidants. Ill blame my sweet tooth, but I couldnt leave The Green Owl Caf without trying one of their desserts. They have a pastry chef on site, and the daily special board contained a variety of great desserts. I chose the coconut cream pie, which was vegan, gluten-free and soy-free. The pie was extremely creamy, with toasted coconut on top, and just the right amount of sweetness. At long last, I felt like I was actually being more health conscious by eating a dessert! The Green Owl Caf also has brunch on Sunday, a kids menu, a full bar, and an appetizer menu. It lives up to its slogan, Vegetarian and vegan cuisine for people who love food. I highly recommend checking them out!

2012: navigating the Mayan calendar and the shift of time .....................................................................
by Cecilia Farran
ell, the possibility of a great cataclysmic disaster occurring on December 21, 2012, the supposed end date of the Mayan calendar, seems to have abated in the minds of humanity as we go on putting one foot in front of the other, although I just read that FEMA has been instructed by our government to prepare for mass fatality planning. (Their words, not mine.) Words of this sort cause one to become uneasy, but more on that later. For now, lets focus on what the Mayan calendar really seems to be saying. The Mayans charted cycles of time and energy. That energy part is very important for it is what separates the Mayans cycles of time from our own. We tend to think of time as something linear and we have invented calendars and clocks to organize time rather than to understand it. This is the huge fundamental difference between how we relate to time and how the Mayans do. The Mayans consider time/energy as cyclical, more like a spiral than a line. Imagine a series of concentric gears, each a different energy, one within the other, each turning at different speeds as they travel different distances of time. Consider that this encompasses time/energy on both a micro (subatomic) and macro (galactic) scale and you have begun to get into the deep and profound concept of time/energy that quantum physics grapples with today, but which the Mayans so eloquently addressed.

It tracks our planet, Earth, as it rotates in the galaxy, coming half way round every 13,000 years to enter the photon belt of supercharged light particles that surround the black hole at the center of our cosmos. Earth spends several thousand years within its influence and we are now within it.1 Now if you are feeling that time is speeding up, that the world is a basket case of confusion, war, anger and cross purposes, and if you feel you are losing a grip on what you once took as inviolate truth, understand that you are feeling the effects of these energetic electromagnetic shifts. This cycle is raising our vibrational level to see, and to feel more clearly, to become truly human and humane, to cease conflict and to open to the flow of oneness. In short: to drop the illusion of

Choosing the right gym membership ...................................................................

by laura schuch, ACsm-CPT

ow that its November and the weather is about to turn chilly for good, you might be wondering how youre going to start or maintain an exercise habit when the snow and ice hit (unless youre a Wisconsin outdoors diehard, that is!). This article covers some of the most common options and their pros and cons.

The big, full-service gym

The home gym

If you have the space and the money, having a workout room or area in your home is always a wonderful option. Obviously, the biggest advantage is that you never have to leave the house to get your workout in. Thats also a disadvantage if you tend to get distracted by kids, laundry or other urgent matters at your house. Creating a workout space in your home can be pricey if you have the money to spend on top-ofthe-line equipment and construction of a special room, but it doesnt have to break the bank. Cardio equipment, both used and new, can be found on Craigslist or on sale at the many local stores that carry it. Do your research before you buy to find out which equipment gets the best ratings and figure out what you want and what you have room for. Also, plan for regular tuneups for your equipment and factor that into your budget. Strength training equipment can be big, bulky and expensive (e.g., home gyms with weight benches, weight stacks, etc.). It doesnt have to be, however. You can easily get fantastic strength workouts using little more than a stability ball, resistance bands, a few dumbbells and your own body weight. This is the least expensive and most space-efficient.
www.naturespathways.com

If youd rather get out of the house, then one of your options is a full-service gym. These can be great places! They often have everything from all the cardio equipment you could ever want, to a plethora of strength training equipment, to group exercise classes, to swimming pools and they often come with added perks like childcare (not always free, though!), big locker rooms and personal trainers (also not free!). If you enjoy being in an environment where other people are also working out, and find this motivating, big, full-service gyms are a good option. Its also a great choice if you thrive on using the pools and group exercise, especially if they are included in your membership. A pitfall of large gyms with all of these wonderful extras is that often after the honeymoon period is over, many members find themselves too busy to take full advantage of those extras so they end up locked into a contract and paying for things they never use.

quickly. But you generally get value and convenience for the money, and with many chains, your membership lets you into any of their clubs, anywhere. Have no fear even with our unpredictable Wisconsin winter weather, you can still get your workouts in!

The 24-hour, small club

In recent years, thousands of small (think 2,500 4,000 square feet), 24-hour keycard access clubs have sprung up all over the country. Membership rates are typically quite a bit less than the big clubs, and the clubs themselves are physically much smaller and offer fewer extras which members generally end up paying for but not using. These clubs are placed in strategic areas of neighborhoods, making them easy to access. They have a nice variety of cardio and strength training equipment. Many also have personal trainers available for a fee. One downside is that in these smaller spaces, it can get crowded

Thursdays 6-7 p.m. Yamuna Body Rolling for Beginners with Laura Flanagan Yamuna Body rolling is a revolutionary approach to health and fitness using balls designed exclusively for this practice. It consists of a series of routines using 6 to 10-inch balls. Unlike other ball exercises, YBr goes far beyond random movement and stretch. It allows you to work specific muscles in detail, to create suppleness in tight areas and optimize range of motion. Yamuna Body rolling reeducates muscles and stimulates bone, creating positive, permanent changes in the body. the ball moves along muscles to stretch them, dislodge tension and discomfort, increase blood flow and promote healing. Lying over the ball, you literally roll your body out almost like dough, stretching and elongating your muscles. the YBr routines follow specific sequences that match the bodys own logic and order. starting where each muscle begins, at its origin, you roll toward where it attaches to the point called its insertion. Whether youre young or old, a fitness buff or a couch potato, rolling with a YBr ball can help you feel better, more vibrant, more alive! Youll have a ball toning, strengthening and realigning your body. You can start this class anytime. the information repeats every eight weeks. at that point, you can stay in the beginner class or move up to the advanced class on Wednesday nights. the Chakra House, 330 W.
