Thank You Parents!

IA Easts parent volunteers have helped with numerous school activities. We would like to thank the parents who assisted with snacks, chaperoning, and set-up/clean-up for the Welcome Back Dance sponsored by the PTIA. We had close to 100 students attend and they had a wonderful time! We would also like to thank Mrs. Rosebrook, who has been working very hard to help clean up the school courtyard and make it an enjoyable place for students and staff.

Important Information for Seniors

Students are in the process of completing the Extended Essay which is the first of the Diploma Program Core requirements for graduation and this DP diploma. Seniors can look forward to the completion of the Creativity, Action and Service (CAS) hours by March 15 and the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) prescribed title by January. TOK and CAS are the last two parts of the Diploma Core. Seniors have also selected their IB exams for the May and will be reviewing the final selections by November 1. All seniors take at least six Diploma Exams and select to take them either at the higher level (HL) or the standard level (SL). Last year's IA average was 32 out of a possible 45 points for the exams and exceeded the world average of 29. On average, IA students received between 16 to 18 credits at Michigan and Michigan State based upon the scores on IB exams.

Sophomores
Currently in the MYP Product Team, sophomores are working on their Personal Projects. The Personal Project is the culminating activity for the MYP or Middle Years Program. Students choose a topic that interests them and that falls under one of the Areas of Interaction. The areas of interaction (AOI) act as a guide for students during the development of their project. The AOI's are health and social education, approaches to learning, human ingenuity, environments, community, and service. The students establish their goals and timelines and complete a process journal throughout the project. The final project is accompanied by a report that is graded on the process of completing the project and the personal growth of the student. While the Personal Project is an accomplishment in its own right, it also prepares students for the Extended Essay in the Diploma Program. Personal projects range from creating artwork and movies, to writing books, to fixing cars to producing fashion shows.

IB Visits Detroit!
The International Baccalaureate Organization is hosting a three-day IB Workshop in Detroit in October. This is the second time a workshop has been held in Detroit in the last year and reflects the growing number of schools in Michigan that offer one or more of the IB programs. Over 300 teachers and administrators are expected for this workshop. IA students are serving as the welcoming committee to IB practitioners from around the Americas.

Not only are our students stellar in academics, many also participate in varsity sports for Troy High School and Athens High school!

Upcoming Fall IA Paintball Outing

The Fall IA Paintball Outing took place on Sunday, October 2, from 1 pm - 6 pm at Hell Survivors in Pinckney (hellsurvivors.com). This was a fun experience for our whole IA community - students, parents, siblings, and extended family members are all welcome to join us next time. If you have never played paintball before, this is a great way to try it out. Hell Survivors is one of the premier paintball fields in the country and they have a longstanding reputation for making safety a top priority. If you havent come to one of our outings before, here is some additional information: dress warmly and wear clothes that you are willing to get dirty (the paint washes out, but the games are played in the woods and it can be muddy). The registration fee for the day is $15, marker rentals are available starting at $10, and paintballs are $18/500 rounds (this is a field paint only facility, so you have to buy your paint there). There is a release form that needs to be filled out in order to play (and parents need to sign it for minor children) that is downloadable at the Hell Survivors website (there are also copies at the field). The outing was a lot of fun and if you werent able to join us this time, look out for information on our next outing!
Please feel free to contact Mr. Majask (pmajask@bloomfield.org) or Mr. Lyons (dlyons@bloomfield.org) if you have any questions!

IA Easts Spanish Grad Teachers

IA East is blessed to not only have such wonderful teachers, but also an amazing group of graduate teachers. Between our two Spanish graduate teachers, eight languages are spoken!

Ms. Ranim Atassi: Born and raised in Barcelona, Spain, Mrs. Atassi has been exposed to diversity as a little girl. Fluent in 3 languages, Mrs. Atassi definitely understands the concept of multiculturalism. In fact, she is fascinated by the multitude of different cultures and enjoys being a diverse person. She always makes a note to expose her 9 and 6 year old to the different cultures by taking them on vacations often and opening their eyes to the different cultures and traditions. What are her thoughts about the schools overall environment and diversity? The answer is simple: she is amazed at the large number of different cultures that this relatively small school holds. Mrs. Atassi believes that the IA language program is very strong and highly skilled. Her word of wisdom is that multilingualism builds on the students own experiences. We are very glad to have you here at IAE. Thank you for all your time and effort!

Ms. Juliana Dergham: Every language you know is a new world you have access to, says IAE Teacher Grad, Mrs. Dergham. Initially from Brazil, Mrs. Dergham comes from a multicultural background: a Lebanese origin mixed with some Polish, British, and Portuguese. She is now fluent in 5 different languages, including Arabic, Spanish and Portuguese. In her free time, Mrs. Dergham enjoys working on mosaic art and playing the piano, although, she laughingly comments, she hasnt had much time lately. She passes on her multicultural traits to her son, who now knows three languages and is currently in the process of learning his fourth. As a mother, Mrs. Dergham shares her knowledge of diversity with her son by taking him on several trips and teaching him to take risks with his language speaking skills. In fact, she suggests the same for all the students at IA. Students should take risks. No matter what, they must think in that language! she says. Mrs. Dergham believes that the IA language program is very advanced, well organized, and skillfully taught. She is assured that students leaving the IA language program at such an advanced level are all set. Thank you Mrs. Dergham for all your hard work and we welcome you to our IAE community!

IA East Alumni
Last year, the class of 2012 graduated from IA, making them the first graduating class of IA East! The students below are all from the class of 2012 and are freshmen in college. They were asked about their experience at IA, and at college, along with any advice to current IA students.

Mehul Gaur
University of Michigan Ross School of Business
Q: What was your favorite class and why? A: My favorite class was physics because I really enjoyed the subject matter and Mr. Lyons is really funny. Q: What contributed to your success in high school? A: I think my success came from knowing the teachers and understanding what they wanted in their schoolwork. Q: If you could change one thing about high school or IA, what would it be and why? A: I would change the afterschool policy because I think hanging around afterschool is what promotes a community in our school and without it we lose a big opportunity to become good friends. Q: What advice would you give to a freshman at the IA? A: I would tell him that he should not procrastinate and get to know the teachers as well as possible.

Manasa Gummalla
Michigan State University Lyman Briggs College
Q: What are three adjectives that describe your overall IA experience? A: Beneficial, stressful, and important. Q: What was your most embarrassing memory at IAE? A: My most embarrassing IA memory was probably thinking that I lost my iPhone but it was actually in the paint box in the art room Q: When and why did you decide to be a doctor? A: I knew that I wanted to work with kids. I loved my pediatrician and after talking with her about her job, I knew for sure. It helped knowing that my doctor, who went to Michigan State for undergrad and then Wayne State, works at one of the best pediatrician firms in Michigan. Q: What advice would you give to a freshman at the IA? A: Find out what you like (sciences, economics, art) and get to know your teachers!
IA East Newsletter 10

Denny Zhang
University of Michigan College of Engineering
Q: When and why did you decide to go into engineering? A: Years ago, I realized that engineering was the thing for me. It just really fit my personality! I really liked building thingsand taking things apart. Q: What was your favorite memory at the IA? A: My favorite memory at IA was definitely running around celebrating after the senior year Olympics when we beat you guys (the class of 2013) for the third year in a row. Q: What was your favorite extracurricular activity and why? A: Science Olympiad because it was so much fun and science is the future! Q: Any advice to current IA Seniors? A: Do your homework. And find something you like doing. Remember that college isnt the end of the road and be balanced. Do something CRAZY!

Preethi Sriranga
Wayne State University
Q: What are you studying in college? A: Im doing pre-med in college and probably majoring in biology. Q: What is your favorite class in college and why? A: My favorite class I cellular biology because the content is interesting and my professor has a really cute Chinese accent! Q: What advice would you give to a current junior or senior at IA? A: Word hard. Get a lot of experience in doing different things and get involved in a lot of extracurricular activities.

Sanjana Kulkarni

Q: What is something interesting about college that you did not expect? A: Something I did not expect was college being as easy as it is because IA teachers prepared me so well. Q: What was your favorite class and why? A: My favorite teacher was Mr. Watson because he was very nice and he was a very good teacher. Q: What advice would you give someone who wanted to get into MedStart? A: Work hard, keep your grades and ACT scores up, and do a lot of extracurriculars.

Interview with Seora Gamero

Seora Gamero is the Director of the Student Leadership Product Team and has been teaching Spanish at the IA since 1996. Q: What was your motivation for taking on the role of Student Leadership Product Team Director? A: I truly enjoy working with Seniors and this afforded me the opportunity to once again work with this class. Last year Mrs. Mack and I worked with a great group of seniors and I was hoping to repeat the same type of experience. Class sponsor is certainly different from Student Leadership Adviser but I still have the perks of working with a motivated group of seniors. Q: How has the experience been so far? A: To date we have met 23 times. Rather than call them class we prefer to call them meetings. Students are benefiting and learning skills that will help them in college and later in the world of work.

Student Leadership

We work as a team andwe are able to work towards our various goals

Q: Has it been difficult to balance your teaching schedule for Spanish with the Product Team activities? A: At the beginning, I was unaware of the time needed to work with 29 active and enthusiastic seniors, but I have learned how to manage my time better. There are challenges when working with new goals but I look forward to the days I get together with the seniors. For the most part, the energy and positive outlook is motivating me to share new skills and approaches to communication. We work as a team and once the guidelines were set by the team and members realized they have a voice the doors of communication were opened and we are all able to work towards our various goals. Q: Are there any other things you would like to mention about the Product Team? A: Students are divided into multiple teams and the essence is generated by setting and meeting goals throughout the weeks. Students understand the end product better if they are able to start from the ground up. Our first step was to develop a business plan and to discuss, agree and settle our mission statement and goals. Students have been able to successfully find their voices and learn how to share their opinions. We all have the common goals of working towards school improvement and making a difference in their education and school community. Finally, it is thanks to our Newsletter Team that we now have the International Academy East Newsletter. I would like to thank each of the team members; I appreciate the work ethic, dedication, enthusiasm and organization towards making this a hugely successful Product Team. Please take a look at the Student Leadership Board located in the Student Lounge. This team makes my day! Thank you!

Give Us 10 Program
This school year, the PTIA of International Academy East, together with IA East teachers, are launching the Give Us 10 Program. In order to keep the clubs, events, and programs of IA East running, many parent volunteers are needed. Thus, to make things a little bit easier, the Give Us 10 Program would like to request that each family volunteer 10 of something: such as 10 hours of volunteer time, $10 for supplies, 10 donated items, etc. Any and all parent volunteers for events or projects taking place at East are very much appreciated, but its completely fine if any parent doesnt have the time to volunteer- you can donate 10 items for a project/event, which will go a long way in helping out at East. If you dont have the time to shop for these items, thats fine too! Monetary donations are great as well. Whatever works best for you will work for the program, so please just Give Us 10! All requests for volunteers and donations are being handled from one location: Volunteer Spot, which you can access online via: www.iatoday.org > IA East > PTIA East > Volunteer Spot. Alternatively, you can go to: http://iaeastptia.weebly.com/volunteer-sport.html. The PTIA would like to thank all of you in advance for your consideration and time to read through this information. More information will be sent out as additional PTIA East news/opportunities come up. To make sure you are always up to date, the best thing to do is to visit the PTIA East website- which is updated often. This can be accessed through: www.iatoday.org > IA East > PTIA East. IA East 2012 Olympics

Olympics is a week-long competition between the four grades culminating in competitive sports and activities on the Friday of that week. This years Olympics ended on October 12th and was one of the most exciting and spirit-filled IA has ever had. Each year, students compete in a variety of events including chalk mural, quiz bowl, chess, tennis, soccer, basketball, tug of war, hula hoop, and the Torpey 500 car race. This year, the theme of Olympics was the movie The Avengers and each class picked a super hero, wearing that heros colors on the day of Olympics. The senior class was represented by Iron Man (black and red), the juniors were the Hulk (gray and green), the sophomores were Thor (light blue), and the freshmen were Captain America (red and blue). The seniors, class of 2013, won by a 66 point margin; the juniors came in 2nd place, the sophomores came in 3rd, and the freshmen were 4th.
