Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth. Archimedes
We will be moving forward from the year of Massiveness to the movement of large masses. As an inspiration, have a look at these three categories of movement for large masses: Glacial: such as Erratic Blocks, as described by Sir Archibald Geikie as large masses of rock, often as big as a house, that have been transported by glacier-ice, and have been lodged in a prominent position in the glacier valleys or have been scattered over hills and plains. Archimedes Machines: such as the water screw, displacement volumes, levers, etc Give me a place to stand on, and I will move the Earth. Scaffolding & Trebuchet: secondary structures on which masses are hoisted or from which they are hurled. [see Domenico Fontanas Della Transportatione dellObelisco Vaticano of 1590] This year we will be working on one consistent topic in two projects. The second project will build on the design ideas and methods of the first. The first semester will be devoted to massing and exterior envelope and structure and the second semester will take this for granted and then focus on internal volumetric division. In both semesters we will look at vast volumes that are transformed by the movement of small building scale solids. Spatially these ideas will be used to: -open and close an indoor/outdoor space in Semester 1 -subdivide and activate a vast interior space in Semester 2 Animation tools will be very useful this year and should be explored as a design tool. More importantly, each design team will have to produce stop-motion model studies showing both design intent at the first stage of the semester as well as presentation quality stop-action movies of large models.
The task will be the design of a vast open long span sports enclosures that is capable of being opened and closed continuously throughout the day by the use of large moving chunks of the building. These chunks can be occupiable elements of the building or they can enclose mechanical systems that assist in the conditioning of the indoor/outdoor space. The studio is looking for alternatives to surface pattern and brisolei techniques and instead is looking at enormous moving openings and how this can change the interior as well as the faade and urbanism of the building. In order to ventilate and change the condition of the interior environment the design should have giant dynamic openings. The design of these massive urban openings should be informed by two concerns: their spatial and monumental impact on both the surrounding city and the interior environment an environmental systems concept at a vast spatial scale. By plugging and unplugging openings with giant cork like elements, the design should exploit: -Vertical interior/exterior temperature differentials -Changes in enclosure during the day and night -Prevailing winds -Movement of the sun The plan of the fields, pools, bleachers and practice fields will be given. The design of the enclosing envelope as well as the building elements will be determined by each design team.

TASK 2D DRAWING
Moving shape inside a static shape: Design an enclosing static envelope Design a single moving shape in three positions at the perimeter of the envelope Design the motion path between the three positions of the moving shape Take into consideration: The openings left by the moving shape when it is absent The path of moving shape and the volume between the path and the envelope The quantity and profile of the moving shape that extends beyond the envelope
