Care Your Way
Respite Care Benets Everyone
Respite is a break from the
ongoing demands of providing
care for a family member who
has a disability or chronic health
condition. Wesway offers short-
term care which gives family
caregivers some time to renew
their energy. Respite care is
a crucial part of the overall
support many people need when
caring for a family member
at home. Wesway strives for
fexibility in accommodating
the strengths, needs and
preferences of each family we
serve. Care can take place in
the familys own home, the
home of a volunteer or in one
of our Respite Homes. Respite
may also include support
for individuals to participate
more fully in the life of our
community.
Families
The responsibilities of
ongoing 24-hour care
can be stressful and
exhausting. Respite
provides a break for
family caregivers to
enjoy some personal
time or simply get much
needed rest. Periods
of respite help sustain
the strength of family
caregivers so they can
continue their vital role
of caring for their family
member at home.
Participants
Respite helps people
with a disability or
chronic health condition
to continue living
at home with their
families. For many
participants young
children, teens, adults
or seniors respite
offers opportunities
to socialize, pursue
interests, build
conhdence and
participate in community
activities.
Community
Respite helps caregivers
and their family
members contribute
to the life of the
community. A fexible
range of respite services
helps build a stronger
community with support
networks that are
inclusive and caring of
all citizens.
Who Is Eligible?
The geographical area
served by Wesway
includes the City of
Thunder Bay and
communities in the
Districts of Thunder
Bay, Kenora and Rainy
River. Eligible families
are responsible for the
ongoing care of a family
member who lives
with them. The family
member must have a
chronic health condition
or a disability, such as a
developmental
disability, autism
spectrum disorder, a
physical disability, a
frail condition related
to aging, Alzheimer
Disease or a related
dementia. Specihc
eligibility is determined
by factors dehned
by Wesways funding
sources and the age,
diagnosis, circumstances
and location of each
individual. For more

Wesways
Personalized
Focus
Service Planning
At Wesway, we listen. We tailor
our services to meet the distinctive
needs of each family we serve.
Were proud of our reputation for
fexibility, diversity and innovation.
Based on eligibility, funding and
other resources, we work in
partnership with families to create
personalized service plans built on
individual strengths, needs and
preferences. After service plans
are approved, family caregivers
are encouraged to arrange their
periods of respite directly with
their workers or volunteers. No one
can predict when an emergency
might occur a death, illness, or
other extraordinary situation. We
strive to support families through
some of lifes most difhcult respite
care challenges. There are no fees
for Wesways respite care services.
Host Families
After careful screening and
matching, volunteer Host
Families provide periods
of respite by welcoming
a child or adult with a
disability into their home.
The hosts include the
individual in their family
activities for a few hours,
or an occasional overnight
or a weekend.
In-Home Service
When the needs of
individuals are better met
at home, trained Respite
Workers carry out the
care routines usually
performed by the family
caregiver. This type of
service can occur regularly
or variably. During a period
of respite, our workers
may assist participants in
the enjoyment of various
activities with a focus on
their needs, interests and
personal safety. If a family
desires, periods of respite
may take place outside of
the home.
Community Friends
Individuals with a disability
are matched with carefully
screened volunteers who
share their time every
week or two or perhaps
monthly. Together they
enjoy a few hours of social
or recreational activities in
the community.
Respite Homes
A variety of respite services
are available in Wesways
comfortable home-like
settings. With the support
of trained Respite Workers,
small groups of participants
engage in daily life
routines and enjoy social
and recreational activities
tailored to their interests.
The Weekend Service offers
respite from Friday through
Sunday, and the Weekday
Service runs from Sunday
to Tuesday. Wesway
may offer other respite
opportunities during the
week, including overnights.
Family Directed
Respite Funding
Wesway administers this
type of respite for families
living in communities
throughout the District
of Thunder Bay. Families
decide how they would
like to receive their respite
service and Wesway pays
for the associated costs.
Detailed contracts are
developed with families
in accordance with clearly
dehned eligibility criteria
and available resources.
In limited circumstances,
families within the City
of Thunder Bay may be
eligible for Family-Directed
Respite Funding.
A Flexible Range of Respite Services

I am pleased and proud to serve
another year as President of
Wesways Board of Directors. My
comments will primarily recount
various service system issues and
priorities. However, what truly
matters is how our friends and
families in our own communities
are affected. Thats why Wesway
distributes this annual publication
to the public. We are particularly
grateful to Wesways families,
volunteers and staff for sharing
their personal stories, and allowing
us to raise awareness of what it
means to be a family caregiver.
Our Board will miss the valuable
contributions of retiring members
Jim McConnell and Nick
Melchiorre. However, we are
delighted to welcome Alison
Arthur, Margaret Boone and Sarah
Manilla as new members of the
Board and look forward to reaping
the benefits of their wide-ranging
expertise. On behalf of the Board,
I offer my thanks and very best
wishes to all of our friends and
colleagues throughout the North
West. I hope you enjoy reading
this Special Edition!
We are thrilled by the outstanding
success of our expanded respite
services for seniors throughout the
region, from Manitouwadge to the
Manitoba border. Wesways respite
features flexibility, a family-
centred approach and practical,
grassroots community
connections. Wesway serves many
seniors who would be eligible for
admission to long-term care. Often
their family caregivers are also in
poor health. Respite is one of the
critical supports necessary for
them to continue living with
dignity at home for as long as
possible. We are proud that our
services help reduce visits to
emergency departments, decrease
unnecessary admissions to
hospitals and long-term care
homes, and reduce alternate level
of care (ALC) pressures and length
of hospital stays.
Wesway is steadfast in our
commitment to help sustain our
health system for the future. We
applaud the North West LHIN for
its ongoing recognition of the vital
role played by family caregivers.
Wesway fully supports the LHINs
strategic directions, which align
closely with our own goals. We are
on board with the Home First
philosophy and other initiatives
which will advance the Senior Care
Strategy, an important component
of the new provincial Health
Action Plan. The growing demand
for respite services both in the
number of families and the
complexity of their needs -
exceeds the limits of our resources.
As a result we have waiting lists.
As the LHIN moves forward with
the implementation of their Health
Services Blueprint, we welcome
the opportunity to strengthen
alliances with our sister
organizations and maximize the
effective use of scarce resources.
We wish the new Developmental
Services Ontario (DSO)
organizations every success as
they employ the new application
process in their role as the single
point of access for the
developmental services system.
We commit to working in
partnership with the
DSONorthern Region to help
achieve the vision of system
transformation. The Wesway
Board continues to be extremely
concerned by the severe shortage
of resources available to serve
adults with a developmental
disability through the Ministry of
Community and Social Services.
When future elements are
implemented (e.g. the new
provincial prioritization process
and funding entities) we will count
on them to significantly benefit
individuals and their family
caregivers.
In closing, its an honour to extend
greetings to the citizens and
community partners of the vast
region we serve. Its extremely
gratifying to receive your

Call for Volunteers to Serve on Wesways Board of Directors
Collectively, the members of Wesways volunteer Board of Directors encompass a wide range of skills, knowl-
edge and life experiences. One third of the Board is comprised of families who are connected to our services,
which helps the organization remain strategically focused on the changing needs of the people we serve. The
remaining members represent the broader external environment, with representatives who have backgrounds in
business, finance, education and other key sectors. This blend of abilities strengthens our Boards capacity to

There appears to be a new boom
occurring among the Baby Boomers.
According to the details of the 2011
Census released by Statistics
Canada, the Chronicle Journal
reported that in the Thunder Bay
area, 17.2% of the population is 65
or over the only segment of the
population that is growing. In fact,
to break it down further the second
fastest growing group are people
living beyond 100. At the same time
there has been a decline in the
percentage of the populations of
both children and wage earners.
By most accounts, we are seeing
significant improvement in the
overall health of seniors. Baby
Boomers are finding that the years
are accumulating relentlessly as the
long summers of our youth become
quick flashes of our pre-retirement
experience. Generally speaking, we
seem to be moving into our autumn
years with a higher level of activity,
energy and enthusiasm than our
parents did.
There are varied beliefs about the
effects of aging boomers on society.
Will we remain politically active?
Will we continue to be a force for
change in policy decisions and the
services we receive? Will we march
into our senior years remaining
characteristically un-silent?
And yet tomorrow I may suffer a
stroke...or be diagnosed with
Alzheimer disease
Life can change in an instant.
Should I need help down the road,
who will care for me so I am able to
remain in the comfort and dignity of
my own home? Will it be my
spouse? Will it be my children? And
when they are stressed and
exhausted from helping me, who
will care for them?
Family caregivers are the bedrock of
the community care system. Respite
care can help support families and
help make a difference that enables
caregivers to continue their vital
role.

I initially signed up as a volunteer to help out but quickly gained a new friend. We both
have a ton of fun playing sports, hitting the gym, watching movies, trying new things and
being a part of the community.

My daughter Randi was born with Mosaic Down Syndrome, which is considered a rare form. Wesway
came into our lives when Randi was around 9 years old and now that she is almost 18 it has been a
great support. We will place Randi's name on the waiting list for adult support in the next few
months. Randi has made many friends during this time and she would have been lost without it. The
respite gives my entire family the chance to get things done without the worry about what Randi is
doing (as she is having fun). So when my employer Thunder Bay Insurance asked our staff what com-
munity program would benefit the most from a donation, I responded immediately for Wesway. It was
a great honour of mine to proudly represent Thunder Bay Insurance and provide a donation to
Wesway, the organization that cares!

Were honoured to support Wesway through the Bring Your Own Bag community sup-
port program. What a blessing it must be for caregivers to receive a much needed
rest. Our community should rally behind Wesway because they demonstrate compassion
and truly care about the quality of life in our city.

Life often comes around full circle
and George Walshs story surely
depicts this. If you could look back
twenty years, you would find George
and his sister Zoe living with their
elderly mom Norah in Thunder Bay.
George required full physical support
as the result of cerebral palsy and
Zoe needed constant care because of
her autism and health concerns.
Norah credited Wesway and other
support services with helping her
cope with her familys incredible care
needs. Her unwavering commitment
to her family, faith and community
was apparent to all.
Although Norahs values were very
traditional, she mapped out a family
journey that was much less
conventional. After a lifetime of
tirelessly caring for George and Zoe,
Norahs health began to decline
when she was in her late eighties.
Yet her determination to keep her
family together was unwavering.
When she reluctantly agreed to move
into long term care it was with one
condition Zoe, whose needs had
increased with age, must move with
her. The two moved into Rainycrest
Home for the Aged in their home
community of Fort Frances. Norahs
plan for George was everything she
envisioned when he moved in with
his best friend and brother Sandy in
their original family home in Fort
Frances. To make the picture more
complete, one only has to look next
door to find their sister Jane, who
spends time with George and Sandy
every day.
Together, George and Sandy have
continued to make their family proud
with their participation in fundraising
marathons, such as the Terry Fox
Run. They enjoy celebrity status as
they partner up George on his
pumped up wheels powered by
Sandy navigating behind him either
on foot or cycling covering as
much as 100 miles in a stint!
Although Norah and Zoe have since
passed on, Norah was able to see
that their family was fully re-united
in Fort Frances.
This reunion has since been
extended to include Wesway. As
Georges caregiver, Sandy is now
able to benefit from the help of
Wesways Family Directed Respite
Funding. Respite allows the two
brothers to enjoy a little time apart so
that they can continue to appreciate
each others company despite the
challenges involved in Georges daily
living routine. Everyone at Wesway
is thrilled to hear that we are once
again connected to George and his
family, as they live out their shared
family dream.
Around Again
Sandy and George are more than just brothers... they're best friends

It's a pleasure for Boston Pizza to be able to give back to our community by supporting
causes, charities and organizations, especially those like Wesway which has such a long
history of helping so many families in our community with respite care. Its such a valu-
able role that Wesway fills, and Boston Pizza is happy to help in our small way.
The Manor House Adult Day Program is a social and
recreational day program for older adults who have Alzheimers
Disease or a related dementia. The program helps participants
maintain an optimal level of independent functioning in the
community for as long as possible, while providing respite for
caregivers.
To cover costs of meals and special activities, a daily
fee of $22.00 is charged. Transportation service with
staff accompaniment is available through a joint
service with HAGI Transit. A fee does apply.

Our family has been involved with Wesway since the early 1980s, and I was a volunteer
as a Host Family for many years. Five years ago I got sick and lost my mobility. And now
my brother cares for me. I understand that respite is for the caregiver, but it really helps
me too. Wesway are my hands.
Our Thanks

and images in this publication. The truths expressed by these ordinary
people bring some decidedly extraordinary issues to life. The sharing of
these personal challenges, joys and tribulations is a compelling way to
increase knowledge and understanding in our community.

To say that Maria and Arthur
Ciddio have a home bustling with
activity is an understatement. With
two of their daughters, two
grandchildren and Arthurs mother
all living under the same roof,
theres never a dull moment.
What makes life even busier is that
Arthurs mother Michelina has the
early stages of dementia. She was
diagnosed shortly after her partner
passed away two years ago. Hed
mentioned that she would often
forget things, but we just chalked it
up to being part of who she is. We
didnt realize at the time that it was
the early symptoms, says Maria.
In addition to her short term
memory loss, she also tends to
dwell on news she receives,
sometimes repeating it many times
to people around her. Arthur has
tried to help her remember things
by using different mind exercises.
Initially Arthurs family would take
turns visiting Michelina, bringing
her food, taking care of chores and
helping out where they could. As
her symptoms progressed,
Michelina moved into long term
care. After only two months, her
family realized it was not a good fit
for her. Given her heritage and life
experiences, Michelina longed to
be closer to her family.
Arthur and Maria volunteered to
have her move in with them.
Michelina comes from a warm
and sometimes loud Italian family.
This is what she is used to, Maria
says. Arthur adds, We were raised
with the idea that wed help our
parents out when they needed it.
Shortly after Michelina moved in,
Maria and Arthur were able to
access Wesways respite service.
Initially they tried the in-home
service, but soon realized that less
frequent but longer periods of
respite worked much better for
them. Arthur and Maria now get
their respite time by having
Michelina stay at the Respite
Home a full weekend at a time.
Its great for all of us, as we get a
break to go to Duluth for a
vacation or Toronto to visit our
other daughter, or we can get
things done around the house.
Maria continues, Michelina loves
the Respite Home as she often
stays with some of the same
people each time. She has
developed friendships with several
of them. She really enjoys it, and it
is important that the elderly
socialize and keep active.
Maria praises the staff at the
Respite Home. Everyone there is
very flexible and accommodating
with us and especially with
Michelina. We know that shes
safe and well taken care of there.
Living at home with her family, it
seems that Michelinas dementia is
progressing more slowly. Maria
admits, Without Wesways respite
things would be much more
difficult for us. Its great to have
the added support.

Allan Hardy, known as Jiggs
around Nipigon, loves to hunt and
fish. For 27 years he has gone out
to his spot at Humbolt Bay on Lake
Nipigon to fish, enjoy the freedom,
but mostly to enjoy the outdoors.
Allan has never liked to stay inside;
he had to be doing something
outside. As a commercial fisherman
he would often be gone for days,
from sunrise to sunset, while his
wife Iris ran the household. He
never minded the hard work
because he was outdoors.
Time began to catch up. Both Iris
and Allan developed several
ailments like many people do with
age. Iris became increasingly
unsteady on her feet and eventually
needed a walker to help her get
around. A couple of years ago her
declining health forced Allan to give
up his time spent outdoors. Allans
life had changed. Recognizing that
Iris was not as capable as she once
was, Allan slowly but surely took
over the duties of managing their
home.
I might not be as tidy as she was,
but our place is always clean, he
says. Allan cooks, cleans, and does
the laundry and does so with a
smile. But he misses the outdoors.
I really dont like to be inside and
cooped up, he explains. I used to
just go outside whenever I wanted
to. But now Ive got to make sure
she is okay. I cant leave Iris
alone.
Allan runs errands when he can. He
tries to do most things when their
son or daughter can be around to
help Iris, but they have careers and
families of their own and their time
is limited. One day, when Allan
was downtown running a few
errands, he bumped into an old
friend and they started talking.
Since Allan only gets out every once
in a while, they took some time to
catch up. As it turns out, his friend
was in a similar situation with his
wife. His friend told Allan about
Wesways Family Directed Respite
Funding and how it helped pay for
someone to stay with his wife when
he needed a break.
Allan just started to receive
Wesways service this year and hes
already noticed the benefits. Hes
hoping to take some time to go
moose hunting in the fall. I
already took three days to go up to
my place on Lake Nipigon. I was
able to check the camp and fix up
the boat and do a few things around
there. So dont be surprised if next
week the sign on Allans front door
says: Gone Fishin.

Courtney Rogalla, Rachel Sutton and
Samantha Poulin joined Wesway to
complete their internships for the
Recreation Therapy Program at
Confederation College. These three
unique individuals all had one thing
in common their great desire to
make the world a better place while
helping others reach their full
potential.
What has surprised you the most
about your time with Wesway?
Courtney: Ive learned so much from
the relationships I developed with
participants and families.
Rachel: That the participants needed
to be patient with me. Getting to
know one another takes time and
learning to understand people who
dont use words to communicate can
be a challenge. I really appreciated
their patience.
Samantha: The most surprising
thing for me was the Respite Homes.
I expected them to be an
institutional setting but theyre not!
They are beautiful homes you feel
very comfortable in theyre
awesome!
What was your best moment with
Wesway?
Courtney: Seeing the smiles on the
faces of the participants after
spending time with them, doing
things that made them feel good
about themselves and their abilities.
Rachel: There are so many
highlights for me! From playing
guitar in the park with a teenager to
enjoying a leisurely walk with a
senior, I loved it all.
Samantha: First, the wonderful
relationships with participants.
Second, the great welcoming
atmosphere from Wesway staff.
They were so supportive with
everything and provided excellent
training.
What was the most important thing
you learned?
Courtney: The most important thing
I learned while at Wesway is to
listen not just with your ears but
your whole body! It is important to
be fully in tune with people.
Rachel: Participants as people first
and that everything else is
secondary. Every person deserves
respect, patience and to be treated
with dignity.
Samantha: Being reminded that life
is short. Live in the moment I
spent a lot of time with participants
who live that way every day. I want
to be more like that!

I am a secondary school teacher for
the Lakehead District School Board.
I have been working as a teacher for
the past three years and love my
job, getting to know my students
and co-workers alike. After some
unexpected changes at the
beginning of the school year, I
found myself out of work and
looking to use the extra time I had
to engage in something meaningful.
I didnt know exactly what I wanted
to do but I knew I wanted to meet
new people and be of help in some
way to someone.
I happened upon Wesway while
driving by. I sent an email and by
the next week I had decided to
become a Community Friend within
the volunteer program. I knew as
soon as I walked in the Wesway
doors that it was an amazing
organization. The people were
welcoming, friendly and most
importantly, happy! Everything
seemed to fall into place and I was
soon matched up with Zachary, one
of the most charismatic and
magnetic individuals I have ever
met.
Zach is, by far, the coolest person I
know. When I first started with
Wesway, I assumed that I would be
providing fun opportunities for
whoever I was matched up with.
When I hang out with Zach, he is
the entertainment - the fun is just
wherever he is. From spending the
afternoon playing arcade games to
water gun fights at the swimming
pool, I have had so much fun with
Zach and always look forward to
the opportunities that the next time
together will bring!
Although I havent been
volunteering long, I have already
learned so much from my time with
Zach. I have learned about real
challenges and true strength. He has
shown me that happy is something
we choose to be, regardless of our
challenges. Its a valuable lesson
you can only learn from someone
who truly lives with that outlook.
Becoming a Community Friend with
Wesway and spending time with
Zach has opened my mind to so
many new and positive ways of
thinking. I am truly grateful for the
experiences that I have had so far
and look forward to many more.

Wesway means a helping hand when one is needed. Our workers provide companionship and assistance for my
mother and respite for me. The respite hours that Wesway offers us gives me the freedom to spend time any way I
want. Our workers are attentive, kind and helpful. I dont worry about my mother while I am away. I know she is
in good hands.

portray the essence of Marlene
Schelhaas.
Marlene has been a Respite Worker
with Wesway for two years. She
provides care and support for
individuals while their family
caregivers take a much needed
break. Depending on the needs and
preferences of each family, she may
provide some very personal care or
she might help individuals
participate in various activities at
home or in the community. Marlene
shares, My own mom has
dementia, so I know what some of
the families are dealing with.
Marlene has followed a diverse
career path. Her husband is a self-
employed carpenter, and for years
Marlene was a stay-at-home mom
focusing her attention on their three
children. Over the years she drove a
school bus, worked in a variety
store, volunteered in a veterinary
clinic and even did some office work
for a while. With her kids grown,
Marlene decided to advance her
education by enrolling in the
Personal Support Worker (PSW)
program. After graduating with
honours, she credits her daughter-
in-law with the suggestion to apply
for a job at Wesway.
When I first came to Wesway, I
was nervous. Its a huge
responsibility to take care of
someones family member. When
you first meet a family, youre not
really sure how its going to go. But
the training provides lots of helpful
information and I cant say enough
about how supportive the
supervisors are, states Marlene.
Its nice to be matched with three
or four families on a regular basis. I
especially love working with seniors
theyre fantastic! Its like we
become really good friends, or part
of an extended family, says
Marlene. Together we try to figure
out activities that suit the persons
interests, and then help them
overcome whatever barriers there
might be. Sometimes we have to be
pretty creative. Its a lot of fun!
When families are in crisis, Marlene
is happy to step up and work
additional hours. Its all about
helping the families, and thats what
seals the deal for me! declares
Marlene. My job helps caregivers
keep their family members at home
for as long as possible. Yes thats
huge for me. Its what I would want
for myself!
Wesway is an awesome place to
work. Ive been matched with some
really amazing families. And yet my
work schedule is flexible enough to
meet my own needs for family
time, beams Marlene. Its
wonderful to be able to work at a
job I absolutely love. I feel like Ive
finally found my niche.

The Canadian Red Cross is committed to providing services that
aid the public in terms of Emergency Preparedness, First Aid & CPR,
Seniors Services, and Home Equipment Loans. Please take

Disaster Management
Provides Personal Preparedness workshops that cover the role
Red Cross plays in disaster response in Canada, how to prepare
emergency kits, ways to stay safe during specific types of disas-
ters and what to do before and after an emergency.
H.E.L.P (Health Equipment Loan Program)
The Red Cross makes equipment available such as wheelchairs,
commodes, walkers and crutches, to individuals recuperating in
their own homes. The equipment is provided with a healthcare
professionals recommendation for up to 3 months and can be
extended.
Home Maintenance Program
This program provides the following services: Grass Cutting,
Snow Removal (driveways and access to home), and light house
cleaning (floor washing, dusting, vacuuming etc.). Note that
cleaning is available either regularly up to 4 hours/month, occa-
sionally or one time only as required by the senior.
RespectED
RespectED educates people about emotional, physical and sex-
ual abuse, as well as neglect and relationship violence.
Programs are targeted at sports teams, coaches, school-aged
children, educators, and parents.
First Aid & CPR

Aid Services. Our courses are WSIB as well as OH&S

Sitting down with Kim Sjolund for
the first time is like catching up with
an old friend.
Kim recently received an Ontario
Volunteer Service award in
recognition of 15 years as a Wesway
Host Family. Of all the things to be
recognized for, giving of my time is
the best, says Kim. She is proud of
her time spent volunteering, but it is
pride in the relationships she has
built with families that shines
through. She says, Giving of your
time to be with a person is so easy!
She also identifies one of the great
aspects of being a Host Family you
dont need to take time away from
your own family, just welcome
someone to join you.
Reflecting on her years with
Wesway, Kim speaks about her own
children, now grown, and their love
for the individuals who came into
their lives through Wesway. They
always enjoyed the time they spent
as family volunteers. When Kims
daughter moved away, she chose to
become a volunteer as well, Its just
something we do. Her sons who
still live in Thunder Bay are also
building relationships in their own
neighbourhoods.
Kim is a great example of the joy
and benefits of volunteering for the
volunteer and for the participant.
Kim reflects, Last time Jasmine
visited us, we were just hanging out,
walking in the back yard. To me its
no big deal; it wouldnt be as much
fun without her. Having children in
your life just makes everything more
enjoyable.
What made Kim choose Wesway all
those years ago? Kim says, I
always loved working with children,
and I had one of those great meant
to be moments. The day Kim
stopped at the Wesway office, she
was greeted by a staffer who said,
Great! I have time to see you right
now and theres a training session
tonight! The rest is history. Kim
says that Wesway has always
ensured that she was well trained for
her role, and always felt completely
supported and appreciated. Kim talks
about the importance of the
matching process at Wesway to find
the best possible fit for volunteers
and families. She says, I wasnt
matched with some random person.
I had a choice! Wesway wants to
build long and successful
relationships.
As a parent Kim understands just
how demanding parenting can be
and the value of a break from those
responsibilities. Kim takes pictures
during their time together so that
Jasmine can share her experience
with her own family after she
returns home. Kim says, My
greatest motivation is knowing that
my time spent volunteering truly
helps families.

I was about to fall off a ledge. Bev
Banks explains of the early battles
with her husband Barries dementia.
Wesway was like a hand that
reached out and gently pulled me to
safety.
Bev and Barrie moved to Upsala
about twenty years ago. Barrie had
been working as a research
technologist with Atomic Energy of
Canada Limited in Pinawa,
Manitoba. An intelligent, outgoing
and independent man, Barrie loved
the outdoors and tinkering. Bev
explains, He once designed and
created a high tech heating system
for our trailer. He used to invent all
kinds of things.
It frightened Bev when Barrie first
began to show his symptoms.
Theres no history of dementia in
his family, and he always took care
of me. Bev continues, He was
suddenly getting easily agitated and
would get angry for no apparent
reason. Making decisions became
very difficult for him and even
routine ones were causing him a lot
of stress.
Four years ago, Bev persuaded
Barrie to move to Thunder Bay
where she might be able to access
more services to help them. After
the move the stresses continued to
mount and Bev was reaching a
breaking point. She was able to get
immediate crisis support from
Wesway, while waiting for ongoing
respite service. In addition, she was
able to join a support group through
the local Alzheimer Society and get
a morale boost through her friends
at her new church.
It wasnt easy for her to leave Barrie
with people she didnt know. I
didnt trust anyone but myself to
look after Barrie. But after meeting
our Facilitator and Respite Workers,
it put my mind at ease. Wesways
been so good to Barrie and me.
They make me feel like Im special.
We love the service and cant say
enough about it!
Bev raves about the Respite
Workers who have been matched
with Barrie. One of our workers is
like a granddaughter to Barrie.
Barrie still loves the outdoors, and
they go to Kakabeka Falls, Mission
Island, Centennial Park, raspberry
picking, and even clean fish
together. They are like two peas in a
pod. When Barrie isnt out enjoying
nature, he likes to play Crokinole, or
practice his putting in the back yard.
Bev uses her respite time to go to
the gym a couple days a week. I
think its important for a caregiver
to be healthy.
While she is thankful for the help,
Bev still recognizes the stress of
caring for someone with dementia.
Barrie is a totally different person
now. He is very submissive and
doesnt open up as much as he used
to. He was a very impassioned man,
but he is so mellow now. I have to
make all of the decisions at home.
Still, she says that she has a little
less stress in her life today. Now she
looks forward to having Barrie visit
the Respite Home, and is excited
that her grandson is moving to
Thunder Bay. As for the immediate
future, they plan to do some
dancing together. Barrie becomes
his old self on the dance floor, Bev
says. We still have a great time
together. Life hasnt passed us by.

A lot can change in just twelve
months! Last year, Wesway shared
a snapshot of its Respite Homes and
how out of home respite can be
crucial to some family caregivers
who need extra time to recharge
their batteries.
Wesway has been offering the
Respite Home model of service with
resounding success for decades.
Although the locations and capacity
of the homes have changed over the
years, the home away from home
idea still remains a popular option
with families.
Last years story described how
Wesway was in the midst of a
significant change that would allow
an expansion of this valuable
service. Fast forward one year!
With the opening of two new
Respite Homes on Jean Street,
Wesway has increased capacity to
provide respite home services for
families. While leaving Andras Court
after ten years was somewhat
bittersweet for the staff and families,
the opportunity to grow the service
was something that could not be
passed up.
Senior participants now call
Wesways Court Street location their
place to stay a while. With a bright
and spacious living area, modern
kitchen, and cozy bedrooms, this
fully accessible location offers a
warm and welcoming atmosphere
where caregivers feel confident in
the care provided for their family
members. Signs and guides
throughout the home help
participants to be as independent as
possible during their stay. The home
also features a private green space
with flower gardens and sitting
areas.
Adult participants now visit the
Jean Street Down location. The
participants love the residential
neighbourhood. Our place really has
an inviting home-like environment,
says Jean Lesyk, one of Wesways
two Respite Home Supervisors. Like
Court Street, Jean Street Down
contains an inviting private patio
space for participants to enjoy.
Children now stay on the upper
level of the Jean Street homes. Like
the adult home, Jean Street Up is
bright, roomy and attractive, and
has its own separate entrance. The
space is really phenomenal. It has
far more play area and room for
toys. Because it is dedicated to
children, the toys and games dont
have to be hidden away each time
the participants leave, says Jean
Lesyk. Jean Street Up is
completely accessible and has a
spacious yard for outdoor play.
A family caregiver recently shared,

Dear Friend of Wesway:
At six feet two inches and 225 pounds, my husband was Big Matt to his co-workers. We were married 46 years ago, and together we raised
hve children. For 25 years we also provided foster care for the Childrens Aid Society. As members of the Kakabeka Falls Legion, we went
dancing every chance we got. Matt worked in construction out of town. One summer he worked in Kenora, and on the last day of school I
had the Volkswagen camper all packed and ready to roll. Off I drove with the kids to join Matt. We swam at Rabbit Lake every day - it was
the best summer ever! That was our life!
Later, Matts 50 years of grueling work as a welder began taking its toll. He had both knees and a hip replaced, and he has Parkinsons
Disease. He worked so hard, and he just cant do it anymore. Oh, how things change! Who would ever believe wed be in this situation?
Matt says Im his wife, cook, nurse, chauffeur, gardener and caregiver. He needs help with buttons, zippers and all his personal care. He has
no strength in his hands and cant pick up anything. He uses a walker and a motorized wheelchair. He has fallen several times.
Sometimes I feel like a bombshell ready to explode. I go outside, work frantically in the garden and cry from built up stress. Caregiving is
24/7 - it doesnt go away. Laugh and the world laughs with you. Cry and you cry alone. So true!
Thank goodness my daughter Glenna contacted Wesway. Now Im able to get out Friday mornings to meet friends for coffee, go shopping or
attend doctors appointments, and I dont have to worry about leaving Matt alone. I also traveled to California to see my 93 year old aunt.
Our daughters took turns helping Matt, and Wesway hlled the gaps. Getting away for ten days was a huge relief - a real godsend.
The breaks I get from Wesway help me hnd the energy to still enjoy fun times with Matt. Ive been taking guitar lessons, and every week a
group of us get together to sing and play bluegrass and old time music at Spence Court and Castlegreen. I bring Matt, and he enjoys visiting
and listening. Its good for both of us.
I dont know how people like us would survive without Wesway. Thats why we do everything we can to make a donation to Wesway every
year. Believe me, their services are worthy of your support. Please be generous!
