BRiaN KELLY

Brian Kelly, a veteran of 21 seasons as a collegiate head coach heads into his third season as the 29th head football coach at the University of Notre Dame. Currently the fifthwinningest active coach in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision, Kelly has guided Notre Dame to 16 wins over the last two seasons. His 110 victories as a head coach since 2001 are more than all but two active FBS head coaches Oklahomas Bob Stoops and Mack Brown of Texas. When Kelly was hired at Notre Dame he said two things he needed to accomplish early in his tenure were shoring up the defense and getting the players to be mentally and physically stronger so they could compete for all four quarters of all 12 games. Through his first two seasons, Kellys defense was one of 13 units in the FBS that allowed fewer than 21 points per game in both seasons. It was the first time an Irish defense accomplished that feat in a decade. The Irish were led on offense by wide receiver Michael Floyds school-record 100 receptions and the running back duo of Cierre Wood and Jonas Gray that combined for 1,893 yards and 21 touchdowns. Defensively, Notre Dame held 12 of 13 teams below their season scoring average and held 11 of 13 schools below their season rushing average. Kellys first Irish squad in 2010 came on strong to play perfectly in November. The Irish success down the stretch came mainly because of its defense, as Notre Dame went 13 consecutive periods over one late, four-game stretch without allowing an offensive touchdown (the best sequence in that category in 30 years).

A standout on Nebraskas 1970 and 1971 national championship teams, Larry Jacobson became Nebraskas first major award winner, capturing the Outland Trophy following his senior season. Jacobson became the first of seven Huskers to win eight Outland trophies, symbolic of the nations top interior lineman. Jacobsons No. 75 was retired along with Trev Alberts No. 34 and Will Shields No. 75 at the 1994 Spring Game, marking the only time in school history that three jerseys were retired at the same time. As a senior, Jacobson recorded 73 tackles, including 28 solos, and added 12 tackles for 73 yards lost and an interception en route to earning All-Big Eight and All-America honors. One of two All-Americans (along with Rich Glover) on the Husker defensive line in 1971, Jacobson helped the Blackshirts

He also was lauded for his efforts in the classroom, earning CoSIDA Academic All-America honors following his senior campaign. Jacobson broke onto the national scene during his junior season, helping the Huskers to their first national title. The 6-foot-6 inch, 250-pound, Sioux Falls, S.D., native finished with 49 tackles, including 33 solos, nine tackles for 61 yards lost and a team-best three fumble recoveries. One of three Huskers selected in the first round of the 1972 NFL Draft, Jacobson was a firstround selection (No. 24 overall) by the New York Giants. Bronko Nagurski was a consensus All-America Defensive Tackle in 1929, and also made All-America Teams that year as a fullback, the only player ever picked at two positions. Bronko went on to an outstanding career with the Chicago Bears (19301937, 43). He led the Bears to three NFL Championships. His name became synonymous with the raw, brute force of football. Even today, people can point to the brick wall he cracked when he ran into it carrying the ball for the Bears one afternoon at Wrigley Field. Created in 1993 by the Football Writers Association of America, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy is awarded to the best defensive player in college football and is presented by the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The Awards Banquet not only recognizes the best college defensive player, but also helps to raise money to recognize the recipients of regional high school and college scholarships. All proceeds benefit the Charlotte Touchdown Club Scholarship Fund. 1993 Rob Waldrop, Arizona 1994 Warren Sapp, Miami 1995 Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern 1996 Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern 1997 Charles Woodson, Michigan 1998 Champ Bailey, Georgia 1999 Corey Moore, Virginia Tech 2000 Dan Morgan, Miami 2001 Roy Williams, Oklahoma 2002 Terrell Suggs, Arizona State 2003 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 Derrick Strait, Oklahoma Derrick Johnson, Texas Elvis Dumervil, Louisville James Laurinaitis, Ohio State Glenn Dorsey, LSU Brian Orapko, Texas Ndamukong Suh, Nebraska DaQuan Bowers, Clemson Luke Kuechly, Boston College
