Tommie Varekamp Reflection on Clinics & Workshops

Introduction: In this short text I will reflect on the two workshop by describing what happened, how I experienced the workshop and what findings I used or can use from this workshop in my project. Workshop Interaction Vision: During the workshop about the forming of an interaction vision we formed an interaction vision in groups of four. As guidelines there were shown different ways to make an interaction vision and also the role of an interaction vision in the design process was presented by Mark van Huystee. The different ways of making an interaction vision were almost all known to me, but it was goof to see them next to each other. What I found most useful was the explanation that an interaction vision gives a direction in all possible solutions to your design goal. A part I also liked was the way Mark van Huystee looked at and deconstructed the presentations of the interaction visions. In this way he looked for characteristics that could be important for the (to be made) concepts. By knowing the role of an interaction vision in the design process I can judge if a certain interaction vision is useful for me in the design process or that I need to rephrase it into something that gives me a direction. The deconstruction of presentation and the interaction vision showed me that not only the literal sentence of an interaction vision is important, but also the (kind of) presentation. Workshop Design Interventions: This workshop focused on the role of developing first ideas early in the design process. After a short introduction we all had time to test some first ideas with fellow students. I find the role of developing early ideas very useful, but the timing of the workshop was not optimal in my planning. This was because we started after that day with visiting patients and one week later I would have more insights to create ideas from. What I missed were examples and presentation of idea tests to each other, like in the first workshop. This made the end and progress of the workshop vague. I am now at a idea generation phase. The early ideas that I have written down earlier in my workbook I will put next to these. Together they will be used to look at what aspects I want to do more research. But this is something I had planned already and I am doubting if the workshop made really an impact on my planning. I think that for next time it is a good idea to gather some examples of earlier years and present the results of the workshop to each other. I think that will increase the insights students get from the workshop.
